PSYCHIATRY PERSONAL STATEMENT EXAMPLE

When the patient came to us, she was already in unfortunate shape. She had been through several different clinics already, each of which had performed their tests and come up with no results. When she finally landed in the Psychiatry clinic, she was already delirious, her mental illness exacerbated by the constant movement and perturbation. Working with her, I realized that there was still much to be overcome in terms of barriers to treatment for mental illness, even in a clinical setting. This experience is what inspired me to specialize in Psychiatry and apply to this Psychiatry Residency program.

I have worked to improve treatment for people with mental illness since I was in middle school. From raising awareness through community teaching to working as a counselor, I have been working with neighborhoods and patients in order to improve the quality of life for those suffering from metal illnesses. Throughout my time in medical school, I gained more understanding of the clinical manifestations of disease and their treatment, as well as their physiological manifestations. I hope to utilize the culmination of my knowledge and experience in order to further treatment in the field.

Medical Psychiatry is still a relatively new field compared to others in the clinic, and still has room to grow in terms of translational research. This residency program in Psychiatry will not only enhance my knowledge of how to treat and comfort patients dealing with psychological pathologies, but will also enable me to better understand the underlying biological mechanisms behind their condition through thorough scientific research. I believe that the skills and experience I will gain from this mentored residency program in Psychiatry will greatly benefit my future career, and allow me to further the understanding of the field in order to develop better diagnostic and treatment tools.
