Danielle Lisboa conductor
Brazilian-born Danielle Lisboa leads an active career as an orchestral conductor, music educator and scholar, regularly conducting community and professional ensembles. Lisboa holds a doctorate in orchestral conducting from the Eastman School of Music University of Rochester, NY. On arriving in Canada in 2008, she became Orchestra Toronto’s first apprentice conductor, was named assistant conductor two months later and shortly after was appointed the orchestra’s music director and conductor. During her tenure, Lisboa became known for her cutting-edge programming and public engagement. Her vision and dynamic leadership took Orchestra Toronto into new paths for outreach and youth initiatives, including the Marta Hidy Concerto Competition and the popular annual children’s concerts. Two years later she led Bellus Barbari, the Toronto Women’s Symphony Orchestra, in its inaugural Ontario tour.
Lisboa currently serves as Associate Professor of Music at Concordia University of Edmonton in the areas of conducting and music theory. Lisboa is former music director and co-founder of the Edmonton Metropolitan Orchestra and continues to mAaintain an active presence in the community with the Edmonton Philharmonic Orchestra in outreach concerts to local continuing care hospitals and schools.
operatic project, developed a summer string camp for youth, and a provincial concerto competition. Most recently, she led the Orchestral Training and Leadership workshop to mentor young conductors and orchestral players into leadership roles.
Upcoming speaking engagements include a presentation on the status of the Maestra in today’s podium at the International Conductors Guild Conference in Valencia, Spain in January 2023.
CARLOS CARDOZO cavaquinho
Brazilian multi-instrumentalist/singer, composer Carlos Cardozo delivers a strong overview on Brazilian Samba, Bossa Nova, Forró, Funk adding jazz and folkloric fundamentals with a hint of Brazilian northeastern rhythms.
Cardozo’s highly fine and assured vocals glows with his expressive compositions and the rich arrangements added by collaborators, producers André Valério and Sammy Barros.
Also an exceptional cavaquinho player, Cardozo has changed the scene of Brazilian Samba music in Canada through a diverse amount of projects, featuring his abilities and skillfulness as bandleader and instrumentalist.
MARIO SILVA 7-strings guitar/bandolim
Mario Silva began to study music when he was 8 years old at the Music Conservatory of Butantan, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. His first instruments were piano and acoustic guitar and later on he became interested in electric guitar and decide to study jazz guitar at Capilano University in Vancouver, Canada. He contributes to local musicians in Vancouver in bands such as: Brejera, Forro do Cana, Ache Brasil, Brazilian Flavours, Hot Water Ensemble and The Creole jazz band. Mario performs as singer, guitarist, mandolinist, bassist and jazz-banjo playing a variety of styles such as jazz, latin and pop.
GIOVANA BERVIAN guitar & vocal
A Brazilian-Canadian singer and instrumentalist, with classical and popular training. She began studying music very young, and later studied classical guitar at Palestrina College, in Porto Alegre, Brazil. As a longtime choral singer in Brazil and in Canada, she had the opportunity to study voice with sopranos Rosana Lofrano and Janet Smith, as well as soprano Gabriella di Laccio, baritone David Wilson and singer Anna Beaumont. Mixing her formal education in classical and pop music, Giovana started her solo career as a singer in 2011, combining a repertoire composed of world music, bossa-nova and instrumental music. Along the recent years, Giovana has been collaborating with Julio Munhoz, whose music compositions met her style – their work resulted in the recording of their album “A Cor Dar”, available on main music platforms. Giovana composed and performed two music scores for the documentary film “Portuguese Cultures in Edmonton” (OPTIK TV; Porto Alegre International Book Fair; Faro International Short-Film Festival), and presently has been collaborating on the original score for the film “We Survive: From Our Fields to Your Tables” to be launched in 2023. Recently Giovana has received a grant from the Edmonton Arts Council to study and research sounds produced by natural elements in nature.
VLADIMIR RUFINO violin
Brazilian-Canadian violinist Vladimir Rufino has brought his love of music to stages in South America and Europe as well as Canada and the United States. He holds a Doctor of Music degree from the University of Alberta (Canada), a Master of Music degree and Artist Certificate from Azusa Pacific University (USA), and a Bachelor of Music degree from the Universidade Federal da Paraíba (Brazil). He has studied with Yerko Pinto Tabilo and Charles Stegeman. He has participated in music festivals and symposia in Brazil, Canada, and the United States including the Starling-Delay Symposium on Violin Studies at The Juilliard School.
Vladimir has performed with orchestras in Brazil, the United States, and Canada, on many occasions serving as concertmaster or assistant concertmaster. His chamber music experience includes numerous international performances as part of the Quartet Quarta Dimensão, the Camerata Brasílica, the Villa-Lobos String Quartet, and the Vaughan String Quartet.
Besides performing the standard classical repertoire, Vladimir has performed and recorded a number of works by Brazilian composers. Vladimir currently performs regularly with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Edmonton, Okanagan Symphony Orchestra and as first violin of the Vaughan String Quartet. In addition to his performance schedule, Vladimir adjudicates for festivals and competitions in Alberta and teaches at the MacEwan University Conservatory of Music.
JOHN FEDOR
Born in Edmonton, John Fedor began his cello studies at the age of ten with Josephine van Lier. He received his Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of Alberta in 2010, under the direction of cellist Tanya Prochazka. From 2009-10, John performed as a member of the Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific, studying under Katinka Kleijn of the Chicago Symphony, and Ariel Barnes, principle cello of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra. John also completed the Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific conductors program in 2010 and 2011 under the direction of Arthur Arnold of the Netherlands. John is also a current member of the Wild Rose String Quartet, established in 2008.
From 2008-12, he worked with the Edmonton Public School Board Music Enrichment Program as an instructor and conductor. John also spent 9 years as director and conductor for the St. Martin Children’s String Society in Edmonton. In 2014, John received his Bachelor of Education Degree from the University of Alberta. Since then, he is currently employed with the
FRANK HO violin
Violinist Frank Ho enjoys a multi-faceted career as a chamber musician, soloist, and pedagogue. His early training was at the Alberta College (now MacEwan University) Conservatory of Music. Further studies with Sidney Harth and Erick Friedman (Yale School of Music) and Yfrah Neaman (Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, England) led to performance opportunities on three continents . Highlights include concerts at venues such the Royal Festival Hall and the Purcell Room in London; Weill Recital Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and Merkin Hall in New York City; and numerous campuses and concert series in western Canada. Many of his concerts have been featured on the CBC.
He is currently a faculty member of the MacEwan University Conservatory of Music, and sessional violin instructor at King’s University and Concordia University of Edmonton. Frank is an active adjudicator nationally and internationally–most recently as a member of the international jury panel for the 2019 Hong Kong Music Schools Festival–as well as a member of the College of Examiners for the Royal Conservatory of Music. He is currently the concertmaster of the Concordia Symphony Orchestra. A sought-after private teacher, many of his students are previous prizewinners of local, provincial, and national competitions; in 2017, two of his students were chosen to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City through the American Protégé International Competition. Since November 2019, he has been the president of the Alberta String Association.
