Fourth of July: Stay safe, have fun By Marcus Hill 50th Space Wing Public Affairs

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — While Airmen at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, have the Fourth of July weekend to travel, leadership is reminding Airmen to remain knowledgeable of guidelines. Previously, Airmen had to stay within a 250-mile radius from Schriever for travel, but Master Sgt. Benjamin Davis, 50th Mission Support Group Wing Staff Agency first sergeant, said the limitation is lifted. “Airmen are now allowed to travel as they would have pre-COVID,” Davis said. “Any leave travel can be approved by your squadron commander. [Those guidelines] are for 50th Space Wing personnel, outside of the 50th Space Wing, members need to touch base with their individual leadership teams to make sure they’re getting their commander’s consent.” The Secretary of Defense sent out a memorandum June 29 requiring leave outside of the Airman’s local area to be approved by the unit commander or equivalent. The memorandum said commanders and supervisors will conduct risk assessments of the Airman’s health and travel plans, if they request leave. Davis said after multiple months of COVID-19, Airmen should understand how guidelines and expectations regarding the pandemic affect their travel. “The bottom line is just be safe and be cognizant of your surroundings,” he said. “It’s a great chance to travel right now. I know it’s been a while since people have had that opportunity, so it’s a great resource right before the holiday to do that. When you’re in an environment where you may need to wear a mask, please do so. But like any other holiday, plan ahead and be safe about your travel and enjoy yourself.” Those who plan to travel can visit 50th Force Support Squadron’s Outdoor Recreation, to get information and recommendations on locations to travel to during the weekend. Thomas Appleman, 50th FSS Outdoor Recreation

assistant manager, said Colorado Springs has a myriad of options for Airmen who remain in town. “We have Garden of the Gods, Red Rock Open Space and North Cheyenne Canyon,” Appleman said. “Garden of the Gods gets crowded around the more popular holidays, but Red Rock Open Space and North Cheyenne Canyon typically see a little less traffic. Appleman also recommended Eleven-Mile Canyon, which is about one hour, 15 minutes from Colorado Springs and near Lake George. “[Eleven-Mile Canyon] is a fantastic area for mountain biking, hiking, climbing, fly fishing, picnicking and camping,” he said. “It’s a phenomenal spot and probably one of the most aesthetically pleasing spots to view. If they have questions about where to go and what activities are available in each area, we definitely have some folks available who can tell them what’s going on.” Appleman also highlighted the importance of understanding the guidelines and restrictions of the counties they travel to this weekend. “They have to make sure the county they’re in does not have a fire ban so they can know if it’s okay to have an open flame,” Appleman said. “I know Teller County has a Stage 1 fire ban; that means no fire, no fireworks. That puts a damper on things, but the Pikes Peak Region will have fireworks on the Fourth of July.” For county guidelines regarding fire restrictions, visit https://colorado.gov/pacific/dfpc/ fire-restriction-information. To rent equipment, learn more about locations, contact Appleman at 719-567-4131 or by email, thomas. appleman@us.af.mil. Though some restrictions have been lifted, Airmen must remain cognizant of physical distancing guidelines during the Fourth of July weekend. Airmen should use the Air Force Instruction to refresh themselves of their requirements and view county websites to adhere to specific rules.

“The bottom line is just be safe and be cognizant of your surroundings.”

CHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — While the Airman’s Creed holds a special place in our Air Force heritage, the second verse holds a very special place in my heart: “I am faithful to a proud heritage, a tradition of honor, and a legacy of valor.” In my office, I have a picture my grandfather gave to me many years ago before he passed away. The picture

was taken at Fort Lewis, Washington in 1942 before his unit in the 33rd Infantry Division was sent to fight in the Pacific during World War II. The 151 soldiers in the photo are of various ranks and ages and came to the 33rd ID from all across the United States. They came from all different walks of life and backgrounds, but were united in the common cause of defending our nation and our freedoms. I have this photo in my office to remind me of the long line of Americans who came before us and wore the uni-

form to defend our nation and our way of life. While the urgent tasks and the events of each day come and go, I try to make a point to take a few brief moments of each day to look at that photo and reflect on the sacrifice these Soldiers made when our nation needed them most. Some voluntarily enlisted and others were drafted, but all of them left the lives they were living, put on continued page 10 | LEADERSHIP

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Falcon Top 3, a professional organization led by four senior noncommissioned officers at Schriever, holds monthly meetings open to all Schriever SNCOs to nominate Airmen for the Top 3 Performer of the Month award. Master Sgt. Jeremy Campbell, 50th Civil Engineer Squadron superintendent of infrastructure and Falcon Top 3 president, said the award can be given to any Airman on the installation ranking from E-2 to E-6 who shows excellence in job performance. Nominations are submitted at the Falcon Top 3 meetings by SNCOs who can submit an Airman for the award, even if they’re not in the same unit, squadron or work center. “At the meeting, I’ll ask everyone in the crowd if they have any nominations for the Performer of the Month,” Campbell said. “I’ll take the nominee’s name and a brief summary of what they did, then after all the nominations are done, I’ll recap, and then we’ll do an in-person vote.” Campbell said the award is based solely on work performance and there isn’t a specific formula they use to choose the recipient. The award winner receives a certificate, a coin and gets recognized in front of their co-workers by the Falcon Top 3 council. “What I like about the award is, picture a senior airman or a staff sergeant, and the entire senior enlisted community on that base comes over and recognizes them for a job well done,” said Master Sgt. Schriever gains

FIRST Let Freedom Ring

U.S. Space Force member

By Marcus Hill 50th Space Wing Public Affairs

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Second Lt. Zach Warlick became the first United States Space Force service member assigned to Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, following his in-processing June 22, 2020. Warlick, who commissioned from the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado on April 18, will work with the 50th Space Communications Squadron as a Senior Watch Officer. “[The] 50th SCS and the [50th Network Operations Group] are excited about having Lieutenant Warlick join our team and we will leverage his abilities and talents heavily as we transition to the Space Force,” said Lt. Col. Shane Warren, 50th SCS commander. Warlick said his journey to the USSF “was a speedy process” that occurred before graduation from USAFA. Warlick said his USAFA commander, Lt. Col. Jordan Filer, suggested those interested in joining the USSF sign up. “They told us not to get our hopes up because there were only four slots,” Warlick said. “Being one of the four selected was a cool experience and I’m honored to say I was chosen. I think one thing that helped me was having prior experience in space communications as an enlisted member.” Prior to USAFA, Warlick worked cyber security at Fairchild AFB, Washington, and noted his work schedule helped him improve his work. “[Cyber security is] heavily tasked and [leadership tries] to put more on your plate than you can handle to give you that stressful environment to prepare you for things in the future,” Warlick said. “It was a strenuous period, but I enjoyed it and learned a lot.” Warlick’s sponsor, First Lt. Tony Shea, 50th SCS Cyber Defense Correlation Cell for Space, training officer-in-charge plans to expand Warlick’s knowledge of cyber defense during his time at Schriever. Shea said Warlick’s skills training will last around six months before Warlick heads to Keesler AFB,

Mississippi, in 2021 for additional cyber training. “We’re definitely going to get him through initial skills training as fast as possible,” Shea said. “We’ll get [Warlick] hands-on training on the floor after he does initial training [at Schriever]. Then, we’ll walk him through the processes just like we would any officer. We expect the same performance from each officer that fits in the senior watch officer billet.” While at Schriever, Warlick’s duties will include handling cyber incidents that occur within the 50th SCS’s pro-

Warlick said he’s grateful to be in this position. “One of the things I’m going to strive to do is to give everything I have to this job and learn as fast as I can,” Warlick said. “Hitting the ground running and getting as proficient as I can as fast as I can will be beneficial for the people who come in later who are also Space Force. I’ll be able to mentor and guide them to be successful.” Shea said he believes incorporating Warlick with 50th SCS and 50th NOG will build continuity for future USSF service members assigned to Schriever. “I’m honored to be a part of history bringing in the first Space Force senior watch officer of the CDCC,” Shea said. “I’m humbled by that and I feel honored to do it.” Warlick also said he’s grateful to be the first USSF member at Schriever and is prepared to lay a strong foundation. “I’m very excited and eager to learn something new,” Warlick said. “My degree was in biology from the [U.S.] Air Force Academy. Getting back into the technical side of cyber defense is intriguing. I’m excited to get in and hit the ground running.”

50th FSS working to save intramural softball season By Marcus Hill 50th Space Wing Public Affairs

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Force Support Squadron fitness staff continue to develop ways to resume its intramural season after COVID-19 forced a stoppage in play. Shortly after volleyball season began in March, the pandemic required Airmen to cancel their remaining games. Now, Charles Thornton, 50th FSS recreation assistant, said they’re working to ensure the same doesn’t happen with softball and future intramural activities. “Social distancing is definitely one of the key factors we want to still use with a lot of units still coming back and a lot of buildings still coming back to 100 percent manning,” Thornton said. “We’re trying to look at that and Col. Smith, [50th Space Wing commander’s], email about outdoor activities. We’re trying to get people together and figure out how this can be the best.” Thornton noted the importance of the four pillar — mental, social, physical and spiritual — and how intramurals play a role to help Airmen throughout the year. “We want to provide for [Airmen] so they have an outlet to get out of the office and get some group morale and continue with their day afterward,” Thornton said. “If they have a great game, they’ll talk about it for the rest of the day. They’ll talk about how someone had a great hit or a great catch or the winning hit. Within that, we hope people are

safe, but we’re obviously in a tough time.” Thornton said fitness center staff understands with sports, Airmen will be closer to one another. It’s a topic they’re configuring prior to a potential start for softball, which normally begins around Memorial Day and now will likely begin early July. To combat potential spread of COVID-19, Thornton said they’re working with Rocky Mountain Sports Officials, who provide

officiating crews for Schriever games, for guidance on a potential softball season. Thornton said RMSO recommended various precautions to limit contact and ensure player safety including sterilizing baseball bats, limiting players in the dugout and more. “They’re using a lot more softballs per game than what they typically did in the past because people are going to be more

conscious of touching the ball,” Thornton said. “They’re trying to keep the ball clean and wipe it down and add more [balls] in each game so there might be in excess of 12 balls.” With these precautions and guidelines in place, Thornton said they hope to have a full season but have shorter breaks between sports. Normally, teams have two to three weeks between each sport to prepare for the upcoming season. “We’re going to see how everything goes when the teams put their letters of intent in and when we have the coaches meeting,” Thornton said. “Safety is the number one concern, group morale is number two and enjoying getting out of the office and playing. And of course, three is getting competition back.” Seth Cannello, 50th FSS fitness center director, said if enough teams submit letters of intent today, they’ll hold a coaches meeting June 29. “This meeting, assuming we have a season, will be particularly important because we are going to have to enforce special rules to ensure physical distancing and to keep everyone as safe as possible,” Cannello said. However, if fewer than five teams sign up, they’ll forego a normal season and have a round-robin style tournament. If fewer than five sign up, the fitness center will focus on restarting football in August. For additional information regarding softball or intramurals, contact Thornton at 719-567-6628.

Grilling

Safety

There’s nothing like outdoor grilling. It’s one of the most popular ways to cook food. But, a grill placed too close to anything that can burn is a fire hazard. They can be very hot, causing burn injuries. Follow these simple tips and you will be on the way to safe grilling. SAFETY TIPS

KKK Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.

Propane Grills

KKK The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. KKK Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area.

KKK Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill. KKK Never leave your grill unattended.

KKK Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.

CHARCOAL GRILLS

KKK There are several ways to get the charcoal ready to use. Charcoal chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel. KKK If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire.

KKK Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources. KKK There are also electric charcoal starters, which do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use.

KKK When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container. NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION The leading information and knowledge resource on fire, electrical and related hazards

Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year. Apply a light soap and water solution to the hose. A propane leak will release bubbles. If your grill has a gas leak, by smell or the soapy bubble test, and there is no flame, turn off both the gas tank and the grill. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again. If the leak does not stop, call the fire department. If you smell gas while cooking, immediately get away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill. If the flame goes out, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least 5 minutes before re-lighting it.

FACTS July is the peak month for grill fires. Roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns.

The USSF field organization will consist of three echelons of command, where the Air Force currently is organized into five echelons. USSF’s organizational structure will initially consolidate and align all organize, train and equip mission execution from former Air Force space-related units. “This is the most significant restructuring of space units undertaken by the United States since the establishment of Air Force Space Command in 1982,” said Secretary of the Air Force Barbara Barrett. “Innovation and efficiency are driving our mission as we position the Space Force to respond with agility to protect our nation’s space capabilities and the American way of life.” In order of hierarchy, the USSF field echelons are named field commands, deltas and squadrons. our nation’s uniforms and defended the freedoms we enjoy today without knowing if they would ever come back home. Looking into their eyes, I see a rugged determination and a steadfastness that is hard to put into words, but I’m sure drove fear into the hearts of their enemies. Their resolute and determined look represents to me the proud

heritage, tradition of honor and legacy of valor that we profess in the Airman’s Creed. I don’t know how many of the Soldiers in that photo returned home after the war, nor do I know how many of them are buried on the Pacific islands they fought so hard to wrestle away from the enemy, but I know all of them sacrificed greatly in order to defend the freedoms we enjoy as Americans today. As I reflect on their photo and think about my role as a leader in the U.S.

Air Force and soon to be the U.S. Space Force, I hope I can be the leader that my people, my mission and my nation need. I hope the effort I give each and every day is worthy of the sacrifices they made on foreign battlefields far from home. If you ever find yourself near 3rd SES and have a few minutes to spare, feel free to stop by my office and take a look at the picture for yourself. I’d love to introduce you to a few of the brave Americans who came before us to defend our nation and

our freedoms many years ago. After you take a step back in time and gaze into their eyes, if you are anything like me, I think you will walk a little bit prouder and stand a little bit taller after you meet them. They represent those who came before us to answer our nation’s call. They didn’t falter and they did not fail. It is through their selfless example we carry on their legacy of valor and their tradition of honor. It is to their heritage we continue to remain ever faithful.

“I know all of them sacrificed greatly in order to defend the freedoms we enjoy as Americans today.”

Fireworks are often used to mark special events and holidays. The only safe way to view fireworks is to attend a professional show. with many professional firework shows being canceled this year, it is important to know that fireworks are not safe in the hands of consumers. Fireworks cause thousands of injuries each year. A few ideas to get into the patriotic spirit, without fireworks: 1. Use glow sticks, they glow in the dark and are a safe alternative to a sparkler. Fun for all ages. 2. Loud and proud. Noise makers are sure to make a statement. They can be found at local party supply stores or make your own. 3. Outdoor movie night. Set up a screen and projector. Don’t forget the bugspray! ! More than 19,500 reported fires 4. Red, white and blue silly string…fun for all ages. are started by fireworks annually. 5. Make a patriotic craft with the family. !
