Fire training takes flight

DAYS OF REMEMBRANCE H HH H H H The Schriever Air Force Base Days of Remembrance, honoring all genocide victims, will be held Aug. 9 at noon. at the fitness center. Holocaust survivor, Oscar Sladek, will share his story and perform a symbolic balloon release to honor the lives of all genocide victims. Volunteers are needed for set-up and tear-down. SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Schriever Fire Department firefighters had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with a new air evacuation helicopter during an annual fire training with UCHealth and Rocky Mountain Mobile Medical at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, July 30. Schriever firefighters were refreshed on

shutdown procedures, landing zone procedures, expectations and communication plans. Matthew Bergland, flight paramedic with UCHealth, explained the proper landing zone perimeters, both day and night, obstructions and possible obstacles. Bergland stressed the importance of identifying obstacles for the pilot and crew members in order to ensure a safe landing.

“We’re happy to hear you tell us those obstacles,” he said. “It’s an important step when we are preparing to land. We really appreciate you informing us.” Other flight crew members then simulated loading procedures of a patient onto the aircraft. “We need to know what they expect of us See Training page 7

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Airman and Family Readiness Center hosted a back to school event at the event center at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, July 25, 2018. Parents had the opportunity to register their children for school as well as learn about on and off base educational resources. Children received hands-on bus safety training, petted live falcons and watched a military working dog demonstration during the action-packed day. “This is an annual event to assist military kids and their parents to get ready and excited for the upcoming school year,” said Ruth Moore, community readiness consultant with the 50th Force Support Squadron. “The purpose is to provide programs and resources to address the unique educational challenges that face military-connected children.” Representatives from Ellicott School District, A&FRC, Military OneSource, Family Advocacy Program, Ellicott Parent Volunteers, Pikes Peak Library, School Age Care program, and the youth Military and Family Life Counselor, were on hand to answer questions and assist families.
