The Schriever Air Force Base to Peterson Air Force Base shuttle service will end Sept. 29. Airmen concerned about transportation between Peterson and Schriever are advised to coordinate with Airmen at the dorms with vehicles for rides or consult their supervisor and leadership to resolve the issue.

The Schriever - Peterson shuttle service will end transportation services effective Sept. 29.

After this date, Airmen unable to drive to Schriever from Peterson or vice versa will need to coordinate with those who have vehicles or inform their leadership to get assistance.

“Airmen should be working with other Airmen to see if they can get a ride; if they are unable to do that, elevate the issue to lead-

ership,” said David Collins, 50th Logistics Readiness Flight director. “I would recommend new Airmen make leadership aware of transportation issues as soon as possible.”

While the service ending can cause problems for Airmen living in the dorms, leadership can help remedy the issue — as long as they are aware of it.

“Supervisors are there to help,” said Senior Master Sgt. Allen Le Vie, 50th Operations Group first sergeant. “Whether it is transportation, finances, relationships, or personal

problems, you need to let supervisors know what’s going on in your life, so they can be a better advocate for you.”

He went on to detail how he would help an Airman if he/she approached him with concerns about getting to and from Schriever.

“The first thing I would do is ask what their budget looks like, what their limitations are, if they have a driver’s license,” Le Vie said.

As summer draws to a close, backto-school season is in full effect.

Remember to safely share the roads with school buses, pedestrians and bicyclists. Also, provide children with the necessary knowledge to stay safe at school. Whether children walk, ride their bicycle or take the bus to school, it is extremely important they and the motorists around them take proper safety precautions.

As of late, and with good reason, the topic of feedback has gained considerable attention throughout the Air Force. Senior Air Force leaders recognize effective feedback as an essential tool, and understand the significant CSMNG CSMNG value and benefit feedback sessions offer to entire organizations as well as individual recipients.

Although feedback is accepted as an effective way to support and enable future leaders, the idea of real, honest feedback is still a sensitive subject.

Feedback will undoubtedly continue to grow as a popular subject in discussions concerning leadership and professional development, but its proper application and significance will not be fully understood unless honest feedback becomes the standard.

In an attempt to conduct effective feedback sessions, I find it best to rely on the essential 3 B’s: Be honest, Be open and Be specific (Not to be confused with my 5 B’s of running a staff meeting: Be Brief Brother Be Brief.)

Be Honest. Unfortunately, much of the current emphasis placed on feedback stems from the fact that its completion is a motivation takes away from the considerable importance of honest feedback in shaping and guiding future leaders. It should be noted honest feedback is not necessarily synonymous with brutally honest feedback. It shouldn’t be a one-way supervisor-to-subordinate criticism session but it shouldn’t be a “You’re sooo the One” scene of Morpheus praising Neo in the Matrix during their initial feedback session either. (Spoiler alert: I know, Neo was awesome and would go on to single-handedly save the human race, but have some respect for yourself, Morpheus.) need to identify who needs feedback the most and then engage. More engagements provide more in-depth looks at the environment and present opportunities to positively affect it.

Once involvement occurs, the environment will change, for better or worse, and more feedback is needed.

Be Open. One of the problems with feedback is it is thought of as top down, but it should also be bottom up. This two-way relationship is necessary to ensure main efforts, intent and purposes are fully understood.

Most often, leaders provide an initial vision but they never get past the transmitting portion of effective communication. This is where feedback is most valuable. Feedback minimizes the mix match between what leaders think they expressed and what subordinates think they heard. No matter how

much leaders prepare or how hard they try, these mix matches are inevitable. Having an appreciation for the uniqueness of how individuals think and receive information is a step towards effective communication and feedback. In this way, feedback provides an opportunity to overcome barriers, encourage open communication, foster change and ultimately reach better decisions.

Be Specific. Feedback overcomes confusion and inflated ideas. During honest feedback sessions, leaders should present straightforward assessments and provide realistic expectations. It is an opportunity to clearly and directly lay out leadership’s vision, reemphasize the organization’s mission, discuss areas of strength or areas that can be improved upon and explain (or re-explain) intent. Just remember, not everyone can ascend to the Iron Throne and unite the seven kingdoms.

In truth, some of us with the best intentions won’t even survive season one.

Go out and practice honest feedback. Start outside of work. Tell your online gamer friend while you appreciate his attempt to help during Call of Duty, every time he picks up a controller, the whole team suffers. Tell your spouse their new haircut could easily win the grand prize on America’s Funniest Home Videos and by all means look Frank and Claire right in the eyes and tell the Underwoods they don’t deserve to be in the White House. But don’t forget positive feedback is also perfectly acceptable. So flag down the driver in front of you and let her know her superb signaling and turning is your new reference of perfection.

Once you have mastered honest feedback at home, bring it into work. Sit down across the desk from someone and begin, “To be honest, your overall effort this past quarter has been … ”

Following disasters, witnesses often report numerous victim deaths and injuries that could have been avoided if the victims had utilized reasonable escape options. In most cases, these victims freeze, preventing them from taking appropriate actions in the pivotal moments during an emergency.

The Air Force Tactics, Techniques and Procedures explains this phenomenon as a cognitive limitation a person experiences when they try to reason through their options under intense pressure. This mental lapse causes victims to lose valuable time to get to safety. The use of disaster or survival training provides people with a set plan, so if the time comes they are more likely to act quickly and appropriately.

Every month, the 50th Inspector General office facilitates active shooter drills, called “short sprints,” to evaluate the wing’s preparedness in the case of an active shooter situation.

Short sprints are conducted in randomly selected buildings throughout the base. The purpose of these drills is not only to evaluate readiness, but also give individuals on Schriever an opportunity to practice their training in a more realistic setting.

When these exercises are conducted, it is expected they are treated realistically to make the training worthwhile. In the exercise, gun shots are simulated by a whistle accompanied by IG personnel yelling “exercise, exercise, exercise, active shooter.” This is the cue for personnel in the vicinity to evaluate their options accordingly, using the Escape, Barricade, Fight Method and commit to the option they deem necessary to survive.

When you hear simulated gun shots in the distance, escape is the best option. Try to find the nearest exit and distance yourself from the sound of the shots. If you cannot escape, it is appropriate to lock doors, barricade entrances, close blinds and turn off lights. If face to face with the shooter and the only option is fight, then make your intentions clear to exercise instructors, who will be wearing black vests.

To avoid injuries, fighting should only be explained or simulated without making contact with the shooter.

base landline (prefaced with exercise, exercise, exercise) if in a position to do so safely. Placing a 911 call from the base landline allows the base to test communication between responding agencies, and ensures processes are set up to successfully deal with emergency situations.

Death at the Derby SUNDAY, AUGUST 27th

It is important to note safety is the top priority during any exercise conducted on base. Carry out every action as if the scenario is real. However, at no point should anyone’s safety be threatened, and no contact should be made with the shooter with the exception of emergency responders.

Team Schriever recognizes Days of Remembrance

The Schriever community had the opportunity to take part in Days of Remembrance events Aug. 7- 10.

While Days of Remembrance honors all genocide victims, this year, Schriever highlighted the Rwandan genocide, the Maori genocide and the Holocaust.

“The overall objective is to bring people’s stories to light and also show it hasn’t been eradicated,” said Tech. Sgt. Salvator Catanese, 3rd Space Experimentation Squadron Weapons and Tactics flight chief and point of contact for the event. “In today’s world, it’s easy to forget what the cost of freedom is and that not everybody has it. The way to progress forward is by remembering and learning from the past.”

Leading up to the main event, organizers shared posters and a Holocaust shoe display in the Building 210 atrium, a chalk footprint exhibit at the North Portals and a display of biographies from the Rwandan genocide in the Satellite DISH Dining Facility. The main event took place Aug. 10 in the base fitness center.

During the main event, Schriever members listened to Oscar Sladek, a Holocaust survivor, who spoke of what he and his family endured during those times.

Sladek’s story began in Czechoslovakia; he was born in 1935 and raised in a traditional Jewish home. After the beginning of World War II, Slovakia declared itself an independent state and they allied themselves with Nazi Germany. Sladek and his family were mandated to wear the yellow Star of David and he was prohibited from attending school. Shortly after, they were forced from their home and Christian friends of the family secretly housed them

to allow them more time to plan their next move. At the age of eight, his parents decided to smuggle him out of Slovakia to live with family in Hungary.

“I spent one year in Kassa, Hungary with my aunt and cousins,” Sladek said.

“The Nazi military occupied Hungary March 19, 1944. I witnessed the troops entering the town. After that, I told my family I couldn’t stay because I knew what was going to happen. I decided I wanted to go back to my parents who were still successfully hiding in Slovakia.”

Once he decided to reunite with his parents, his family knew they could not stay there for much longer. They made their way to the Tatra Mountains to hide with barely any food or supplies.

“We lived there for four months,” he said. “That was a very hard time for us.

We were like fugitives in our own country; we were always going from one place to the other to survive. From a child’s perspective, I had moments where I was just pretending this was all a fantasy, but at the same time, I learned how to survive.”

Sladek added there were partisans, who were freedom fighters, living near them in the mountains. They kept them updated about the war and also protected them and other families hiding there.

“Going to the mountains nowadays is a pleasure,” he said. “We do it because it’s a feeling of freedom; however, hiding in the mountains during WWII was a different story. Years later, I read that it was the worst winter Europe ever had. It’s a miracle we survived. We were religious people and I always say ‘God helped us.’

I have no other explanation.”

In March 1945, they were liberated, and with help of the partisans, the families

made their way back home.

After spending a few years in Slovakia, Sladek and his family decided to move to Israel.

“Starting a new life wasn’t easy,” Sladek said. “Europe was in disarray and there were no real laws. It was difficult to live in a country where people still hated you because you were a Jew. In 1949, I convinced my parents to move with me to Israel, since it was established as a Jewish country. I figured I was better off living in a country where I was totally free, and able to practice my traditions. After I moved there, my dignity was restored.”

Sladek made his way to Venezuela and then the United States after his time in Israel. He currently lives in Denver, Colorado, with his wife, Selma.

He said he is among the youngest of survivors who continue to tell their stories, which places even more importance to speak to younger generations.

A number of volunteers from the local and base community supported the event and several provided contextual period textiles, artifacts and memorabilia.

Col. Jennifer Grant, 50th Space Wing commander, furthered the message of the event’s importance for the Schriever community.

“On behalf of the 50th Space Wing, I would like thank Mr. Sladek for taking the time and being so candid, as well as all of you for being here,” Grant said. “May we never forget what the human spirit and resiliency looks like in the face of adversity.”

While the subject matter was solemn, the uplifting message of hope, freedom and gratitude was consistently relayed throughout the event.

Fifteen couples attended the “Laugh, Learn, and Love on your spouse” family retreat, hosted by the 50th Space Wing and 310th Space Wing Chaplain’s Office at the Embassy Suites at Stapleton in Denver, Colorado, Aug. 11-13.

Chaplain (Capt.) Portmann Werner, 50 SW chaplain, explained this was the first time using the “Laugh Your Way to a Better Marriage” curriculum and the first time they provided a Team 360 (50th Space Wing and 310th Space Wing) retreat, with chaplains from both wings leading the event.

“I thought that this was a great retreat,” Portmann said.

“While we did not have full child care, the parents were very understanding and appreciative of the volunteers who kept the kids entertained.”

events such as two hours unlimited play at an arcade, a free trip to a movie theatre for a movie of their choice, a visit to a wildlife refuge and a family movie night showing the movie “Inside Out” with some discussion afterwards.

The retreat also included an informational session led by Chaplain (Capt.) Jessica Werner, 310th Space Wing, which discussed how men and women’s brains process information differently, how men and women have different ways of showing affection and personalized data showing each spouse’s goals and attitudes toward life.

“All the couples agreed with everything she said,” added Portmann. “It also helped that the two chaplains happened to be married to each other.”

“We had a wide range of rank, including airmen first class, senior master sergeant, captain, to include civilians and the reservists, and we had two people that had just returned

from deployment a week prior,” he said. “They wanted to ensure they would have the tools to help their marriage during their reintegration.”

Capt. Robert Molineros, 50th Space Communications Squadron flight commander, thought the retreat was informative and helpful.

“I thought the family retreat was an outstanding experience to reconnect with my spouse on certain aspects of our relationship that we needed to reaffirm,” he said. “The video that was shared during the sessions was very informative, fun and easy to follow. My spouse and I were able to discuss a few topics out of that video about our relationship with the guidance and mentorship of (the Werners).”

Molineros added the retreat helped him and his family relax and they were able to spend quality time with each other.

“This family retreat was definitely worth our time,” he said.

Schriever’s first ever “Sing it Loud” karaoke competition kicked off Friday, Aug. 11, 2017 with a dynamic trio telling Schriever “what they really really want,” with a rendition of the Spice Girls classic, “Wannabe.”

The ensemble’s prize-winning performance set the tone of the night, with the whole of the competition’s performances being a combination of modern and classic hits.

Ultimately, the winners of the prizes for Best Ensemble, Best Solo Artist, Best Kid Performer and Most Entertaining were a mix of the two: Best Ensemble: “Wannabe” by Staff Sgt. Joe Coram, 50th Mission Support Group self-assessment program manager, Staff Sgt. Brandon Council, 50th Contracting Squadron contract specialist and 1st Lt. Craig Miles, 50th Contracting Squadron contracting specialist.

Best Solo Artist: “End of the Road” by Melvin Peppers, 50th Civil Engineering Squadron engineering technician.

Best Kid Performer: “I Will Survive” by Mariah Mobley, 10.

Most Entertaining: “Billionaire” by Catherine Sanford, Dunkin’ Donuts general manager.

The winning members of the competition appeared to have fun doing so, with wigs, dances and audience participation being steps to their success.

“That was the first Schriever outing I’ve ever been to,” Sanford said. “I was worried, thinking ‘I see these people every day for coffee, if I make a fool of myself this will be awful,’ but overall it was fun, I had a blast!”

However, before the winners had been announced, there were several performances to rival the winners’.

Renditions of classics like “Hopelessly Devoted to You” and “My Heart Will Go On” provided the judges with more to think about in terms of the rankings.

“We loved the energy that our performers had, it was a great combination of active duty, civilians, spouses and children that participated, and we appreciated having a well-rounded group of participants. It was clear that competitors put a lot of thought into their song choices, and some even went above and beyond with their creativity. Our goal is to boost morale and encourage comradery, and this event definitely did that,” said Jennifer Revell, 50th Force Support Squadron commercial sponsorship coordinator.

Ultimately the night had 10 performances for the panel of judges to mull over, and 50 FSS would like to see growth in participation in the future, as would the other participants.

“I would come back if they had another one, but I would probably bring a lot more people with me,” said Sanford.

However, 50 FSS is happy with the turnout, and has high hopes for the events to come.

“We do hope to hold a similar event in the future.

We’re going to start with a movie premier on Sept. 15, where we’ll be playing “Cars 3” and serving snacks again, similarly to the second portion of last week’s event. This event will start at 3 p.m. and is open to all.

“As far as the karaoke piece, we’re definitely looking into how we can re-create a similar event in the future,” she continued. “With perhaps more open-mic singing. We hope that will take a little bit of the edge off of performing.”

AFSPC initiative destroys barriers to bolster Airmen innovation

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — In a move to encourage Airmen to come forward with innovative thinking, a new decision panel will allow Airmen at all levels within Air Force Space Command to present ideas that could enhance the mission, save time, increase customer satisfaction, save the Air Force money, or anything that can improve the way things are done within the Air Force.

The new AFSPC Shark Tank-like panel is a rapid process method used to review ideas from Airmen at command staff and wing levels.

“Our Airmen are the experts; this gives us an opportunity to hear directly from them,” said Gen. Jay Raymond, AFSPC commander.

Any Airman wishing to present an idea should prepare a simple bullet background paper that includes the proposal title, summary of improvements and an actionable decision for AFSPC leadership to review. When the proposal receives a wing commander or equivalent endorsement, AFSPC will

This Airman at Patrick AFB, Florida, has already shown how beneficial speaking directly with leadership can be.

Capt. Jessica Jenkins, 45th Space Wing Military Personnel Flight commander, and her team saw a problem and realized there was a solution.

Patrick AFB had a long wait time, averaging 38 days, for getting appointments to receive their dependent identification cards. On the day of the appointment, people found themselves spending an entire day, if not more, waiting on their IDs. Missing or incorrect paperwork was often the culprit for the long waits.

Her team came up with the idea to develop an online renewal application process for dependent IDs that would ensure all the necessary paperwork was completed. After completing the paperwork, the system would generate an appointment to pick up the ID cards.

“We try to cover all the different areas involved in the car buying process,” said Liz Archuleta, Schriever community readiness consultant, who advises on budgeting and large financial purchases for Airmen throughout the base. “I start with the budget, and then make decisions on how much they can afford, assess an insurance estimate and discuss the pros and cons of dealerships and more.”

Since being implemented at Patrick AFB, the renewal process now has gone down to a one day wait time for appointments and the entire process the day of the appointment now takes less than an hour.

When Jenkins presented the idea directly to Raymond, he invited her to go to the District of Columbia with him to present her idea and its potential for implementation Air Force-wide to Lt. Gen. Gina Grosso, Chief of Staff for Manpower, Personnel and Services. In addition, representatives from sister services and DoD agencies will meet later this fall to discuss broader implementations.

“The most important lesson from this experience is knowing we all have the potential to change the Air Force, no matter who you are, what you do, or what rank you hold,” Jenkins said.

Any Airman wishing to present to the next round of the AFSPC rapid-process review panel, should have their ideas endorsed and sent to the AFSPC improvements office no later than Aug. 21, 2017. “I would tell you if we come across an issue like that (hailstorm) again we will work with someone to get support for transportation,” Collins said.

The hail damaged many Airman’s cars, including Airman 1st Class Esmeralda Garcia’s, who rode the shuttle and hitched rides with other Airmen for a duration afterwards until her car was fixed.

“It was helpful at the time because I didn’t have a vehicle,” she said. “The situation put an emphasis on how important it is to have a vehicle out here. There were a lot of people who live on Peterson and work on Schriever, so it was easy to get

rides with friends.”

According to Collins, low ridership and high cost were the primary factors for the service’s cancellation.

“The cost of the contract was in the neighborhood of $287,000 dollars a year,” Collins said. “Calculating the number of individuals riding, it was running anywhere from $260 to $280 per ride, per person.”

HPP bod pod functioning again

The bod pod located in the Schriever Health Promotions Program in Building 500 is fully functional again. The bod pod is a computerized, egg-shaped chamber that measures a person’s mass and volume, from which their whole-body density is determined. Using this data, body fat and lean muscle mass can then be calculated. To set up your appointment, and/or arrange restricted area access, call 567-4292.

HPP hosts classes

Health Promotions is now offering the following classes in Building 500: “Healthy Sleep Tips” every second and fourth Monday of the month at 1 p.m.

AF Military Treatment Facilities pilot medical readiness

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — Air Force Medicine has a non-stop global readiness mission. Medical Airmen must be prepared to deploy on short notice to provide life-saving and performance-enhancing healthcare in diverse, austere, and isolated locations, and all Airmen must be medically ready to deploy. To achieve this readiness mission, the Air Force Medical Service operates 76 military treatment facilities around the world, which serve as the primary readiness and training vehicles.

The 12 hospitals and 64 clinics within the AFMS serve as dual readiness platforms, ensuring that all Airmen meet medical readiness standards to deploy, and that all medical Airmen have the training and skills necessary for deployment. The MTFs are the foundation of our expeditionary medical capabilities, providing a population of patients that drives the workload, case diversity and acuity necessary to maintain clinical currency that is essential for readiness.

Every Air Force MTF is aligned with an operational Wing to enhance the medical readiness of warfighters and their families.

Medical group commanders tailor the care and training offered at their MTF, ensuring the medical readiness of the operational wing they support. No two air bases have exactly the same mission portfolio, so each has unique medical support requirements.

An excellent example of how MTFs support the installation’s operational mission is the 19th Medical Group at Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas. The 19th Aerospace Medicine Squadron High Altitude Airdrop Mission Support Center is housed at Little Rock, so medics from the 19 MDG are experts in the care of high-altitude operators.

This includes unique oxygen monitoring and physiologic performance requirements for these Airmen. This type of expertise, like others organic to Air Force Medicine, isn’t required at every installation, nor would it be

efficient to deploy it at all 76 AFMS facilities.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities gained at these fixed facilities translate into outstanding care in a deployed environment. A valuable tool for the AFMS to extend this care downrange is our Expeditionary Medical Support Health Response Teams (EMEDSHRT). EMEDS-HRT allows medical Airmen to rapidly deploy a mobile tent hospital that can provide emergency care within an hour of arrival on the scene of a disaster or other casualty situation. This gives us the capability to deliver surgery and critical care within six hours, and full hospital capability within 12 hours of arrival.

Properly training medical Airmen to deploy and operate EMEDS-HRT requires a specialized MTF readiness platform. Four Air Force MTFs are presently staffed to deploy and train EMEDS personnel, including the 633rd Medical Group at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, devoting time and resources to a critical deployment platform that other MTFs are not resourced to deliver.

At the 633 MG, the Global Response Force coordinates with Air Combat Command to

run annual training exercises on EMEDSHRT. Medics from the 633 MG practice rapid deployment and simulated casualty care with a wide assortment of patient scenarios. These well-trained Airmen from the 633rd deploy in support of a variety of mission types around the world, from combat operations support to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.

Once fully operational, EMEDS-HRT can provide surgical and trauma care, prevention, acute intervention, primary care and dental service to a population of more than 3,000.

Our expert teams continue to find innovative ways to decrease the size and weight, while increasing the speed of deploying these mobile hospitals. They can also be tailored to a specific mission, adding specialty care such as obstetrics/gynecology and pediatrics for humanitarian assistance, disaster relief or other missions involving populations with special healthcare needs.

Medics at most MTFs rotate through EMEDS training, but may not receive the in-depth training available to Airmen at Joint Base Langley-Eustis. This tailored mission

support is critical to building and sustaining an agile and flexible force, capable of completing a myriad of health-related missions around the globe at once.

MTFs also serve as platforms to evolve and implement new ways of caring for patients.

Most patients interact most often with their health teams in primary care clinics, so these are a key area for readiness and innovation.

Air Force MTFs utilize the Air Force Medical Home model, a team-based approach to care that embeds specialty providers into primary care clinics. This removes barriers to care and drives efficiency. Mental health providers, physical therapists, clinical pharmacists, social workers, and others augment or deliver primary care appointments in close coordination with the primary provider and other members of the team.

Our Behavioral Health Optimization Program, which embeds mental health providers in primary care clinics, has been particularly beneficial. Building a mentally resilient force is a key to readiness, but stigma can sometimes create a serious hurdle to seeking mental health care. BHOP is an effective way to initiate mental health care, starting informal conversations with mental health professionals. Brief meetings in the context of a primary care appointment can lead to earlier treatment of a mental health condition, preventing a more serious problem.

The AFMH model also incorporates the Base Operational Medicine Clinic, an occupational medicine, flight medicine and deployment health focused clinic. BOMC is separate from primary and family care clinics at MTFs, focusing resources on the readiness mission. Previously, flight and occupational medicine clinics required patients to visit different departments to get their preplacement exams and exposure assessments.

BOMC, centralizes all exam components in one clinic, and use standardized procedures.

The rare phenomenon when the sun, moon and Earth perfectly align is predicted to be the most viewed eclipse ever. As of this writing, the best viewing spots for base residents may be south toward Santa Barbara.

The 30th Medical Group provided some background information and safety tips for Team V members. Here are five things for Airmen and families to know for a safe viewing experience: The path of “totality” — when the moon entirely blocks the sun’s face — will stretch from Salem, Oregon, starting at 10:16 a.m. and reach Charleston, South Carolina, at 2:48 p.m. This means Mountain Home, F.E. Warren, Offutt, Scott, Arnold, Shaw, and Charleston Air Force Bases will briefly experience a near 100 percent eclipse, while the rest of the United States will see at least 70 to 90 percent to include Vandenberg. The start of the eclipse for this area will begin at 9:03 a.m., with maximum obstruction at 10:17 a.m., and ending at 11:39 a.m.

Looking directly at the solar eclipse without proper eye protection is unsafe and can cause serious, permanent eye damage. The lone exception is during the brief total phase of the eclipse, which will last under three minutes and only within the 70-mile wide band of totality. Outside of that window, there will be harmful rays for the duration of the celestial event.

Homemade filters and standard sunglasses — even dark or polarized ones — are not sufficient to prevent eye damage. This also goes for unfiltered cameras, telescopes, binoculars, and other optical devices. The only safe way to directly view the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters (“eclipse glasses” or handheld solar viewers) that are “CE” certified and meet the ISO 12312-2 international standard. StarNet Libraries has distributed more than two million “eclipse glasses” to more than 4,800 library locations across the U.S. According to Tech. Sgt. Brittney Vaughn, 30 MDG Optometry Services NCOIC, if Team V members are willing to make a drive, the Atascadero Library has glasses to give out free of charge. Indirect viewing techniques are a safe and fun alternative. Pinhole projectors using your hands, cereal boxes, or other projection techniques are popular ways to safely observe a solar eclipse. Look online for instructions on how to make a simple projector. For the safest viewing experience, NASA will host a livestream “Eclipse Megacast” with exclusive multi-platform coverage across the path of totality.

AETC reimagines The Continuum of Learning

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas — Air Education and Training Command is re-imagining how Airmen are developed through a paradigm shift in education, training and capitalization of experiences in a new concept: The Continuum of Learning.

The effort officially kicked off with a leadership summit last week, in which AETC senior leaders, wing commanders, command chiefs and superintendents conducted a deep dive into the CoL redesign.

The CoL initiative is a shift to better focus how Airmen learn by integrating education, training and experience in ways that allow them to learn anytime, anywhere throughout their careers. The end goal is to create a culture of lifelong learning.

“What the new Continuum of Learning does is transform our industrial-age pipeline production system into a more modern-age, learner-centric model,” said Lt. Gen. Darryl Roberson, the commander of Air Education and Training Command. “We’ve done really well at the training and edu-

“The Continuum of Learning is a lifelong learning model that will capture the education, experience and training all together and will be something our Airmen haven’t experienced previously,” Gudgel said. “As Air Education and Training Command, we are going to have to change our thinking and our culture to understand the different learning styles of our Airmen. We are going to dig deep into [competency-based] learning, basing it more on performance instead of the industrial, schoolhouse model we have been using for so many years.”

Key concepts included in this learning paradigm shift are modularized learning, blended learning, on-command and on-demand learning, competency-based learning and the Airman’s learning record.

While senior leaders will introduce these CoL concepts in the coming weeks and months, the redesigned learning

and resolution of issues related to space, communications infrastructure, cyber defense infrastructure, capabilities and ground assets that impact space-related missions. The shift is currently underway as courses at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi, and Maxwell AFB, Alabama, have changed how material is presented and how instructors approach the learning environment. Currently the cyber transport course, science on a sphere and squadron officer school are training under reimagined curricula.

Gudgel said although this is a new process, the redesigned CoL will benefit all Airmen.

“I believe Airmen will be impacted in a positive way,” Gudgel said. “Airmen won’t be stove piped. They will have opportunity to make choices. I am a tactile learner and relate to all those Airmen who can’t just sit and go through a PowerPoint brief. Our Airmen are going to get the best of multiple learning environments. They are going to be more productive in their jobs and happier overall.”
