And while backyard trampolines are an investment, letting kids hop and bop around is a simple, excellent way to get them up and moving. At Sky Zone, folks of all ages can get their bounce game on with a variety of trampolines, foam pits and other attractions and events. But they have something special for parents of younger kids: Every Wednesday and Friday from 10 to 11 a.m., Sky Zone offers toddler time, a designated play time for kids 5 and under to play without the bigger kids around.

eeping kids active and entertained during the winter can be a challenge, especially if they’re younger. But kids who aren’t old enough to enjoy winter sports can still be entertained. Below, we’ve selected seven local options to help young kids and their families enjoy themselves this winter.

and more — think of a playground, but indoors.

There’s also a separate play area for toddlers aged 3 years and younger so they can have fun separate from the bigger kids. Plus, admission costs less for toddlers and for young’uns who can barely crawl. It’s also free for parents and infants, and parents can purchase coffee and other beverages while they supervise and socialize. Plus, every Wednesday and Friday night, parents can let their kids play for discounted rates and take advantage of $1.50-a-slice pizza.

Of note, it’s smart to call ahead to make sure the spot hasn’t been booked for one of their popular birthday parties. Military discounts are available for open play admissions and party packages as well.

Located in the building which served as the El Paso County Courthouse from 1903 to 1973, the Pioneers Museum offers a glimpse of what the Southwest used to be like — everything from early photographs of the city, 19th century artifacts, Native American art and objects, and more, with a variety of interactive exhibits. Guests ages 2 to 10 in particular can explore the Children’s Gallery exhibit, which is currently “Beads, Blankets and Buffalo: Trade at Bent’s Fort.” It gives kids a look at what everyday life was like at Bent’s Fort, once a major outpost on the Santa Fe Trail and located northeast of modern-day La Junta, Colorado. Families can also learn more about the Springs area with “The Story of Us: The Pikes Peak Region from A — Z,” an alphabetical guide to how Colorado Springs came to be the city it is today. And, to reiterate, it’s all free.

ments. They’ve been assembled into a simulation of an authentic mining town, allowing people to explore and experience some of the day-to-day aspects of life back then. All tours are self-guided, so kids can take their time to explore the things that catch their attention the most, from butter churns to a vintage arcade and more.

Admission is free for children under 6, and the Ghost Town Museum offers a coupon on their website for a dollar off admission for up to four people. Come back in the summer for gold panning, too.

YMCA

Multiple locations, ppymca.org YMCA memberships are a great way to have access to a variety of classes, health facilities, events and more, and the YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region has many ways to lower barriers to access for military families. Title 10 personnel can get free memberships, and active duty and retired military get discounts. The YMCA offers a variety of military family-specific programs, such as the monthly PEAK (play, enrichment and adventure for kids) program.

It’s an evening of fun for kids ages 3 to 12 that includes food, games, and healthy and educational activities — and given that the program was previously called Parent’s Night Out, it’s a great opportunity for parents to take some time for themselves. Parents with kids between 6 months and 6 years old can also use Learn & Play hours, which educates, exercises and entertains kids while parents get two and a half hours of time to use other YMCA facilities.

Trainers expand from gym to the kitchen

ealth and fitness devotees are fond of saying “Abs are made in the kitchen,” acknowledging that nutrition is as important as working out.

But many people who manage to get to the gym on a regular basis struggle with the diet part of the equation. With limited time to cook, they rely on take-out, fast food or frozen meals from the supermarket.

The food industry has stepped in with meal services that ship frozen meals prepared many miles away.

“You’re going to pay $9 for shipping, and you’re getting meals that are at least three days old, and the quality is not great,” said Tillman Huett, CEO of Fast Fit Foods, a Colorado Springs meal service that aims to provide healthy meals that meet customers’ needs for good nutrition and convenience.

The company prepares and delivers fresh, fully cooked meals to customers who order online and stocks meals and snacks for walk-in customers at two retail locations.

Fast Fit Foods began as a service Huett’s brother and sister-in-law, personal trainers Taylor and Natalie McLaren, were offering for the competitive athletes and body builders who were their clients.

“They were providing meals for them essentially wholesale,” Huett said.

Requests for their meals soon outgrew what they could prepare in their small apartment kitchen, and they moved into a location at 1831 Briargate Blvd.

They enlisted two more partners, trainers Nick Smith and Charles Arenas, to help develop a spinoff business, and in July 2018 opened a retail store on Cheyenne Mountain Boulevard.

keep prices affordable, pricing individual meals so they were competitive with what customers would spend at the grocery store.

Huett, who was director of the China Youth Business League, worked on marketing and other backend aspects from afar.

By the time Huett returned from China a little more than a year ago, “there was definitely some air under the wings here and people were responding very positively.”

The company’s growth since then has been phenomenal.

“In November 2017, we might have been serving 10-15 customers a week,” he said.

“Now that number has grown to about 2,500 customers every week and recurring meal plan subscriptions. That equates to about 10,000 people a month.”

Revenue has quadrupled in the past six months: “We’re about mid-seven figures

in revenue,” Huett said.

Meals start at $6.99, and the company offers discounts to customers who subscribe for seven, 14 or 21 meals.

A second retail store opened in July on Stetson Hills Boulevard.

Customers can choose from about 25 menu items and have meals delivered to their doors for a small charge. They can also pick up orders or select meals and snacks from grab-and-go coolers at two retail locations.

Meals are prepared on the day of delivery in the Briargate Boulevard commercial kitchen, using organic, GMO-free ingredients.

Meals can be customized to meet special dietary needs.

For customers who want to follow the popular keto diet, Huett said, “We will take

out the major source of carbohydrates and replace them with vegetables. If you are diabetic, you can swap out sweet potatoes for broccoli or green beans, and you can change out most of the meat we use for ground bison if you’re looking for leaner meat.”

Besides athletes, Fast Fit Foods’ customer base includes seniors, members of the military and parents with small children.

“We’ve been able to tap into a lot of growing segments that were otherwise unserved,” Huett said.

The company carries a line of nutritional supplements at the retail stores and recently introduced protein snacks that can work as total meal replacements.

“We always are trying to push the boundaries of what we think is possible for something with incredible taste but also doesn’t ruin your body and doesn’t ruin your bank account,” Huett said.

Fast Fit Foods now is poised for even greater expansion.

“We’re planning on putting up a few more retail locations very soon in 2020,” Huett said. “And we actually just acquired another prepared meal company in Sarasota, Fla. But our biggest focus will be moving into Denver. There’s a few major players there in meal prep, but we believe that we will be able to take them on. Our prices are much more competitive, and our meals are just better.”

The company is committed to giving back to the community that nurtured it.

“In July 2019 alone, we donated almost 900 meals and spent over $9,000 with local suppliers using our partner FoodMaven,” Huett said. “We are dedicated to providing access to affordable nutrition for all people.”

Outdoor Rec’s “Get on the Bus trips” include a lift ticket to either Monarch or Loveland, ski or snowboard rental and transportation, all for $95. Those who need a lift ticket and transportation can take the trip for $85. Skiers who need just gear rental and transportation can take the trip for $65 and those who need just the ride can get on the bus for $45. Trips are planned for most Saturday’s throughout the season. Even with mountain slopes providing the thrills, parents know that kids need to be entertained. Service member skiers looking for a family-friendly experience can checkout Keystone Resort’s Kidtopia, a free program that offers activities and events on and off the snow from opening day to the end of the season. Winter Activities in National Parks R 1. Gem Lake at Rocky Mountain National Park

ocky Mountain National Park is the perfect place to find a plethora of winter activities, but snowshoeing is popular here for a few reasons: It’s easy for anyone to get the hang of, rentals are a breeze in the gateway towns of Estes Park or Grand Lake, and it allows you to tread lightly through Mother Nature without overly demanding athletic distractions.

The Gem Lake trail (1.6 miles) is a favorite among locals and boasts 1.8 billion-year-old granite high-rise walls and views of the Continental Divide.

Insider Tip: RMNP offers some the best ranger-led snowshoe programs in the state. Two-hour excursions begin at both the west (Grand Lake) and east (Estes Park) entrances January through March.

2. Mueller State Park & Cheyenne Mountain State Park Can’t pinpoint a winter activity that pleases every outspoken family member? Mueller State Park, 40 minutes outside of Colorado Springs, has you covered with sledding, snowshoing and cross-country skiing trails, along with cozy winter cabins with modern amenities for those who prefer to celebrate winter by snuggling up next to a fire with a good book. And Cheyenne Mountain State Park, just 15 minutes south of town, offers an archery range, junior ranger program and geocaching.

Insider Tip: Give yourself plenty of leeway for cabin reservations at Mueller.

3. State Forest State Park The winter landscape grants some of the best opportunities to watch mammals in their natural habitat. State Forest State Park, just east of Walden, is home to more than 600 moose that roam the park’s 71,000 acres. But first things first: Stop by the Moose Visitor Center to get the inside scoop on where to watch these magnificent creatures.

Insider Tip: Snowmobiling through the park is a favorite for adrenaline junkies and free spirits. You’ll cover more

ground (70 miles of trail in addition to access to Routt National Forest) and take advantage of picturesque terrain that’s buttressed by the Medicine Bow and Never Summer mountain ranges.

4. Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve

When many people think of Great Sand Dunes they think of a desert-like landscape. After all, the park boasts a whopping 30 square miles of sand dunes reaching heights up to 750 feet. The vastness feels even more visceral in winter with cooler temps, fewer visitors and the treasurable quietness that a fresh blanket of snow affords.

But a real treat is when the famous Zapata Falls, just 11 miles outside of the park, freezes into a 25-foot icy monument worthy of the White Witch’s castle in Narnia.

Insider Tip: Bring shoes that are suitable for hiking on ice. Nearby outdoor retailers sell affordable cram¬pons that slip right over your hiking or snow boots for optimal stability.

5. Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park Another bonus to winter in Colorado’s national parks is that cars are prohibited from mucking up trails primed for cross-country pioneers. This is certainly the case for one of the state’s most popular trails, South Rim Drive (7 miles), which swishes Nordic skiers and snowshoers to staggering views of Gunnison’s snow-dusted “black” rock walls. Rent skis in Gunnison or Montrose and park at the South Rim Visitor Center.

Insider Tip: A few times a year the ranger program offers guided full-moon trips.

6. Eleven Mile State Park Coloradans don’t give up their favorite pursuits in the winter — they just have to switch them up a bit! How often do you get to spend quality time with your closest friends in a homely hut swapping stories and sippin’ beer? Amid all those good times, don’t forget about reeling in fleshy kokanee, trout and pike. Out-of-towners or newbies can

visit 11 Mile Marina for equipment rentals or guided trips.

Insider Tip: Eleven Mile State Park is roughly one hour away from two of Colorado’s most popular destinations: Breckenridge and Colorado Springs. Make a weekend of your ice-fishing excursion and visit nearby mountain towns like Lake George or Alma.

7. Sylvan Lake State Park Sylvan Lake State Park is arguably one of Colorado’s best-kept secrets for winter. Although Sylvan is located in the Vail Valley, a world-famous locale for skiers and snowboarders, it chooses to take a different spin on winter sans chairlifts and superpipes. Instead, visitors hit a jackpot of snow conditions, isolation and pure wilderness that yields an array of activities such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing (rentals available at the visitor center), snowmobiling, ice fishing, sledding, wildlife watching and winter camping.

Insider Tip: Sylvan also grants access to White River National Forest’s vast landscape and trail system accessible via snowshoes, cross-country skies or snowmobiles.

8. Ridgway State Park Ridgway State Park’s three yurts are found on the park’s Dakota Terraces, where mountain views are indescribable and the potential for coziness abounds. The round, tent-like structures can be rented for two nights at a time and are warmed by a propane heater/gas log stove. Perfect for those not looking to get too hale and hardy for winter camping, a year-round restroom with flush toilets and sinks is also close by, and bunks, futons, a couch, table and chairs, microwave and refrigerator, electrical outlets and lights make things nice and comfortable.

Insider Tip: The park recommends visitors bring their own bedding (ie, typically a sleeping bag), camping-style cooking supplies and eating utensils. Pets are allowed in one of the yurts for a fee.

Eclectic CO., now up to nearly 60 vendors, is the Colorado Springs craft scene in microcosm. Olympic City USA has quietly established itself as a safe launching pad for makers. Whether that craft is lattes, imperial stouts or handmade home decor, makers who take risks similar to Barrington’s are often rewarded with a thriving business and a camaraderie they say is unique to the Springs.

“Not just our small business, but so many of the other small businesses that started off with us, just found their audience,” Barrington said. “I think [Eclectic CO.] has given other small business owners and other artists a chance to be seen.

“We had so much talent,” she added. “It was all already here, but to have it all pulled into the same bucket is really special.”

n every other place Ani Trejo Barrington has lived, her hobby of curating vintage clothes has remained just that — a quirky side hustle relegated to Etsy shops and word of mouth.

That changed after she moved to Colorado Springs and met Peri Bolts, who invited her to join Eclectic CO., a collective of (at the time) 24 southern Colorado-based vendors and artisans.

The boutique-style maker’s market was part of 2018’s Downtown Partnership of Colorado Springs’ Holiday Pop-up Shop program, which helps applicants find and rent a space to lease for their business during the holiday season.

Head distiller Allen Oliver makes his bitters, liqueurs and spirits on-site, bringing a creative touch that is uncommon in the distillation process, said Montana Horsfall, Blackhat’s director. The spirits themselves are also novel. Colorado is, in general “taking distillery to a new level,” Koscove said, but where other distilleries are more whiskey forward, Blackhat’s focus is on agave spirits, aged and flavored rums, and brandy.

“We thought bringing something cool and fun and exciting to the Eastside is what’s needed,” Koscove said. “We have one whiskey that we do produce, but it’s very, very limited. ... Everything else is things that no one else is doing.”

Collaboration, not competition

As easy as it is to build your product on what sets it apart, the Springs’ thriving craft scene is due in large part to its collaborative nature, Barrington said.

“That’s a big part of it. We always talk about collaboration over competition,” she said. “We all spend time together, we get to know each other, we hang out at markets together. ... It’s giving us connection, community and a chance to really spur each other on with our creativity. ... I feel like it’s changing the scene.”

At Eclectic CO., makers and other creative types can commune in one place to exchange ideas, offer moral support or even help promote each other’s work, rather than merely dropping off their products and leaving, she said.

“It’s an easy sell when it’s something that’s by a friend of ours,” Barrington said.

“It doesn’t matter if I’m selling your stuff or I’m selling my stuff. It is a win for our community when people are excited about buying local.”

the Future Pop-Up Markets, held twice a year to highlight a diverse community of female-owned businesses that promote sustainable living.

“It’s been so cool to watch that happen for not just me, but for many people, and then to have that give way to more jobs, more creativity, more markets,” Barrington said.

“Having a place of stability like this, and having a steady income like this, is exactly what has created more opportunities for the whole Colorado Springs community.”

Koscove and Horsfall, of Blackhat, have found that this holds true in the craft spirit world as well. Four distillers in the Springs community have toured Blackhat so far, and all left with nothing but glowing praise, Koscove said.

“It’s pretty rare if distillers and brewers

don’t collaborate,” Horsfall said. “We’re all in it together.

“We’re always like, ‘Oh, we want what Denver has,’ and now I’m like, ‘What? You want what we have?’” she said. “That’s really special.”

Just as many artists and vendors have found their footing at the Tejon Street storefront, places like Eclectic CO. can help Colorado Springs carve out its own unique identity, Barrington said.

“I think we compare ourselves a lot to other cities but, in our own right, places like this help us to establish ourselves,” Barrington said. “We don’t need to look like Denver or Boulder. We need to find our own identity, and I think places like this give us the opportunity to do that.”

Sharpe helps Southeast find its voice

erryJosiah Sharpe enlisted in the U.S. Army six days after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Six years and two tours in Iraq later, he was ready for something new.

“It was great, but it wasn’t the way that I wanted to help the community. I thought that I was going to jump out of airplanes and helicopters with food in my hand, all cinematic, giving it to little kids like the commercials,” said Sharpe, 36, a senior library associate with the Pikes Peak Library District’s Sand Creek Library in Southeast Colorado Springs. “I got out because I wanted to help the world in my own way, and my way is through music.”

Shortly after moving to Colorado Springs two years ago, Sharpe wandered into the Sand Creek Library in search of reading material. An employee, noticing the music notes inked onto Sharpe’s right arm, suggested he check out the library’s brand-new (at the time) free recording studio.

“They were looking for someone to help offer more hours to the community, and it just happened to work out that I was qualified and I’m now here,” Sharpe said. “I’ve been able to do some really great things with this platform.”

A San Diego native, Sharpe has bachelor’s degrees in music and creative writing from the University of Texas at El Paso.

He is the multimedia director of Break the Silence Against Domestic Violence, a national nonprofit organization founded by his fiancée, Kristen Paruginog, and owns the production company Anthem Music Enterprises. His first single, “All in the Music,” is expected to be released by the end of 2019.

Sharpe sat down with the Business Journal last week to discuss the studio’s impact on Southeast Colorado Springs residents, his work with BTSDV, and how music has been his “saving grace.”

Tell us a little about what the studio offers.

We offer 45 hours of free studio time a week to the community. We are the only free full-time audio production studio in America. ... Basically, our job is to amplify our patrons’ voice. Our patrons come in and do either podcasts, or we have comedians come in and do their skits, we have singer-songwriters who have never done any singing or songwriting before come in and want to develop their skills. My personal job is to help [patrons] develop their voice. ... My specialty is in music because that’s what I know, so when people come in and they are fresh in doing music, when they leave, my job is to make

sure that they’re extremely comfortable and confident with the project they have — something that they’re willing to share with their friends, with their family, and feel really good about sharing. ... It’s really a beautiful thing. It’s gotten to the point where my fiancée doesn’t even ask me how my day was anymore, because she’s like, ‘Every time I ask you, you say it’s amazing.’

Just being able to help somebody come in and express their voice, express their emotions, it’s definitely an emotional release. ... If people are looking to get music production, if they’re looking for a free studio to record their stuff, this is the place to come, for sure.

What role has music played in your life?

Music has been my saving grace, absolutely. It kept me from doing things that I probably shouldn’t be doing. My mom was a music director for my entire childhood growing up and always had us in some lane of music, or some understanding of music, theater or whatever it was to kind of keep us focused on this industry. Even in the military, I sang the national anthem for my graduation and did whatever music projects I could be a part of while in the military. It definitely has been my saving grace.

Why is this kind of service especially important for the people of Southeast Colorado Springs?

With various socioeconomic backgrounds, to be able to let a specific community or demographic know that their voice matters is really huge in today’s society. So for us to have [the studio] in this particular

area, in the Southeast corridor of Colorado Springs, and letting this demographic of people know that their voice matters is so important. ... I’ve done songs for a wide range of ages, of demographics, in here, and every age bracket, demographic, background of person has shared an emotional attachment to their projects, because they wouldn’t have otherwise been able to get these projects done if this studio weren’t here in this area. People who are in this area know that there’s another studio up at [Library] 21c ... but again, the background of some of the people out here, they can’t get up there. So the fact that this is walking distance to a lot of people in this area is really huge for the people here, and for me to be able to help lead this moving forward is really humbling.

Arts are often first on the chopping block when it comes to educational budget cuts. Explain why places like this studio can help fill that void.

With all the funding cuts, art is usually No. 1, and it’s terrible because art is a medium in which people can release their voice. For people to say, ‘Oh OK, we don’t have money for that, so I’m sorry, but you’re just going to have to hold your tongue there, buddy, you’re not going to be able to express yourself.’ ... this is truly a game-changer — not just because it’s a free studio, which is unheard of, but because it’s a free studio in this particular area. I think if we can get these studios in all of the lower-tiered areas of the community, it would change the entire scope of society.

How does the studio’s addition reflect libraries’ evolving role in the community?

The main mission of libraries is to provide access. Access 20 years ago looks different than it does today, so the fact that we can provide access in multiple different mediums is truly special. We do community events through this studio, we’ve had community members come out. In February we sang the black national anthem collectively and had different people come out from different backgrounds — they all wanted to be a part of it. We’re now doing jam sessions where we get people from the community to come out. [We have] the Urban Classic, where we’re bringing classically trained musicians together with urban artists to create an improv show on the spot. It’s really great. We have spoken-word artists come out.

Talk about your work with BTSDV. It is the largest DV organization on the internet. ... We kind of see domestic violence as a sandwich. The first slice of bread is the prevention — trying to get people to not do it and get out of the bad situations — and the meat and all the insides are like the crisis, the shelters, things that you need in the moment. The other slice of bread is OK, they’re out of that situation, now how do they progress? Most times they’re going to get back into an unhealthy relationship and start that cycle all over again, so it’s important that we help with the aftercare as well. So we’ve created a network of more than 500,000 people who are involved in our organization nationwide.

We just opened it up for people to express and share their stories. They understand that it’s a safe place and they’re not going to get judged, because it’s an organization run by survivors, for survivors.

What has kept you in Colorado Springs?

Understanding the city wants to do well for the city. The city wants to uplift itself and find more ways of bringing communities together. Being from San Diego, the leadership was behind us in that aspect ... but the community was more competitive — ‘Oh, you’re putting on an event? We’re putting on an event. Who’s going to go to which one?’ Out here, we haven’t run into that problem. We’ve had community members as well as leadership get behind what we’re doing, to the point now where people are seeing us in leadership roles in what we’re doing, including the music and arts areas. It’s been just humbling.
