LINE CASTING

What is a

Line Casting? Michael Joy coined the name line casting in 2002 when he developed this new proprietary artistic process. Simply put, a line casting is a uniquely designed 2D image transformed into a durable cast stone material (CatStone). If you were to hold one of the (17”x24” x3/8” thick) 10 pound panels in your hands, it would feel cool to the touch, much like a large glazed ceramic tile. On the surface, each panel has a hand stained, antique finish. Since every panel is handmade and hand finished, each one is unique with slight variations in texture and surface color. To bring a bit of functionality to the imagery, Michael has modified each line casting with a functioning quartz time movement. Each line casting is available in two sizes with choice from six different surface finishes. To purchase a line casting clock, please click on the link beneath the desired image. Please note that each panel is made in the artist’s studio and is hand signed by Michael Joy. Typically, it takes 14 days before the panel is ready to ship.

Catstone Most of Michael’s sculptures are made from a cast stone composite called Catstone. It was developed over 20 years ago for use in the exterior architectural restoration industry. The raw material itself consists of a minimum of five separate ingredients that are mixed together to create the final casting material. The result is a durable, weather resistant casting. The choice to work with this material is because it’s nontoxic to handle and can be manipulated to simulate stone, metal or wood finishes. Because it is a difficult material to handle without training and requires a very good quality silicone mold, Catstone has been slow to find recognition in the sculptural field. Today, architects and designers use this casting system to fabricate ornamental building façades, columns, fireplace mantels, ornamental plaster work and so on. Michael learned how to use this material over a period of 10 years while working on façade restoration projects.

Bug Eye Here is a dash of the outdoors without the buzzing. The summer months fill my small garden with determined bugs drifting from one plant to the next. Watching them is proof to me they are connected to a higher energy guiding their activities as they go about their business in the most amazing way. Here you can look at them any time without getting in their way. And don’t miss that little man in the corner, who’s walking off into the distance only to return again with a pair of his own wings. I sure would like to know how he did that.

Chubby Fish In honor of my wonderfully elegant and fat goldfish Arty who lived to be 7 years old, I present you the Chubby Fish. For those of you who haven’t spent much time fish whispering, you wouldn’t know they like to play and should definitely not be in a tank all alone. Since Arty has long ago moved from tank to spirit, I like to imagine him looking in on me from time to time. This is why there are two clocks on the panel. One is for your time and the other is to honor the time spent with an old friend.

Feisty Zebra As a former zebra trainer, I can promise you this guy means business. You had better give him his crown back so he can settle down and get back to grazing like he was just a moment ago. Ever since the light bulb hand stopped petting him, he has been difficult to manage. And you should know, it is said that whoever can calm a royal zebra will have 12 years of good luck.

Shovel Bug If you take the time to look at a bug closely, you can see that every bug has a special job. These specimens were discovered during the digging of the Panama Canal and you can tell these bugs are serious about their bidness. The little stinker in the lower left is also a shovel bug, it’s just that he is coming back from his vacation and has not put on his work gear. I can tell the swami boss is already giving him the stink eye. What is with that guy anyways?

Flight of Fancy Swinging back and forth like a pendulum keeping perfect time, this fanciful fellow takes his job seriously. Even with his fishy tail, he maintains a perfect Dr. Seussian poise. Better not let your cat get near this one, because this bird is in charge! An important thing to know about this clock is when your intentions are honorable, look the bird in the eye on the fifth minute of noon and he will answer any question you ask. His answer will come instantly; you only have to be quiet enough to listen.

Joey I once saw a red bearded man get his ass kicked by a Joey. Hey, if you push a Joey, he will likely kick you… I’m just saying. So if you have some Joey attitude in you, hang this clock to remind others your time is your time, and you don’t like to be pushed around. Even if loud alarms are ringing nearby. Side bar… my lawyer says I should clarify I am not actually encouraging you to kick like a Joey because that would be rude and open the door to a lawsuit. Jumping is ok, but no kicking.

Jousting What is the deal with this jousting thing that keeps coming around again and again taking a poke at you? I don’t know how many times you will have to prove yourself, even when you don’t want to, but stay strong and keep your horse moving ahead. Just remember the cardinal rule of wearing armor: always use the toilet before getting on your horse.

Radar Clown My mother always said, “If you are not being well received, get an antenna”. Obviously, a dandy outfit does not hurt either. Look closely and you will see what the radar clown is so excited about… and no, it’s not because he recently changed his name to Ignatius. Rather, he is witness to a coo coo bird transforming into a Phoenix.

Tick Tock Moth These moths will never nibble your sweaters. In fact, I guarantee it. You should appreciate that a Tick Tock Moth is very special because it always brings sweet whispers of love and tender messages of kindness. You will know if you have a Tick Tock Moth in your house because your children will tell when they wake each morning how wonderful their dreams were during the night and how confident they are to start the new day. If you are lucky enough to see a Tick Tock Moth fly by, hold out your hand to let her know you have a message that needs delivering. Then, quietly speak your good wishes to her and she will carry the message to your loved ones in their dreams.

Flying Fish Once thought to be extinct, the noble Skyfish has the ability to convert air into helium just by opening its mouth, allowing it to travel higher than any other creature. Piloted by women whose feet have never touched the ground, passengers of these airships have commented on having to set their watches back 23 minutes upon arrival. We are not sure how the pilots fold time, but we do know that every passenger who rides one of these Flying Fish disembarks looking noticeably younger.
