holesome Hummel-like figurines become bloody apocalyptic effigies. Tree trunks morph into birds of prey. Unblemished skin bursts with elaborate ornamentation. Vibrant textiles dangle from the rafters of commercial buildings.

Scott Blades of Skull Soup creates foundobject art

Among the art Scott Blades, 31, creates are zombie sculptures and bloody cherub chandeliers, while his wife, Jamie Parker, creates earrings that include Barbie shoes and bullets.

They market their merchandise under the name Skull Soup and distribute it from their Leechburg home through the online marketplace, Etsy.com, and at conventions and festivals nationwide. Many of the pieces are created as fundraisers for pit bull rescues.

Blades finds tchotchkes at thrift stores and remakes them into the stuff of nightmares. And they sell. “There really seems to be a market for it,” Blades said. “It’s not something a lot of people do. We’ve gone to shows and jewelers are a dime a dozen. I’m not saying their art’s not nice, but if you have 50 vendors at a craft show and 15 are doing jewelry, your market is picked through and you have a lot of competition. Few people do the stuff I’m doing.”

Blades uses all sorts of cast-off items to make other sculptures, too. “People may recognize a garden hose or a bracket off an old window and say `I had brackets in my house like that,’” he said. “They get engaged and it makes the art more interesting. I don’t always make a ton of money, but it’s a lot of fun.”

Blades, whose day job is as a graphic designer at a Springdale company, dabbled in art as a kid Jewelry and got into fine art in coldesigned by Jamie Parker lege. He said art is important for Skull for a community’s continued Soup vibrancy and creativity.

“With art like this, you don’t need a lot of tools and spend money to get into it,” Blades said. “That stuff’s important as far as young kids to get into it. It’s a hobby and something to do instead of watching television and getting into trouble. It’s TRIB-TOTAL MEDIA

stimulating. It challenges your brain and makes you think differently about things.”

Blades praises businesses like Fresh Heirlooms in New Kensington for taking a chance on the community and opening up to offer their found-object art for sale and also to offer classes to children and adults in how to recycle and reuse everyday objects in creative ways. Fresh Heirlooms co-owner, Lindsay Woge, teaches childrens’ art classes at both Penn State New Kensington and Westmoreland County Community College’s New Kensington campus.

“It’s a really engaging store,” Blades said. “It’s fun to see a store like that in a community like New Kensington. Not everyone can get into oil painting because the paint and the canvas and the brushes are all expensive,” Blades said. “With found-object art, people have access to anything they can fish out of the garbage.”

More art outreach would enhance the AK Valley, Blades said. “If those places were everywhere, people would be a lot better off,” Blades said.

Likewise, Seth Leibowitz opened his tattoo shop/art gallery on Leechburg Road in Lower Burrell in 2008 with a similar intent. Artform Gallery and Tattoo is unusual in that it has a traditional art gallery on its bottom floor and a tattoo studio upstairs.

“This place was meant to bring artists into one spot, to work off each other,” he said. “We invite the community to shows here where they can be exposed to many forms of art. People are so distracted by Honey Boo Boo and the like that they are missing out on learning the real universal truths.”

His wife, Visna Leibowitz, said Artform further extends art outreach to the public by offering acrylic painting workshops on a regular basis.

“Especially now when they are taking art out of the schools, somewhere

along the line people forget how to learn new things through art,” she said. “When people are tiny children, the first thing they do is draw and color. Having workshops brings out the creativity they had when they were kids.”

Mixing the artforms is a way to draw more people to the gallery. He said he worked in a typical tattoo parlor years ago and wanted to offer something different. “This isn’t a street shop where people pick tattoo flash off the wall,” Leibowitz said. “This is art.”

Leibowitz said he hasn’t received any flack from critics who don’t believe tattooing is art. “Everyone has been positive. People seek us out, expecting something different,” he said, noting that he is booked through April and his tattoo colleague Matt Miller, is booked into November.

“We can all be who we are and not who they want us to be,” said Sassani, whose art starts with a chainsaw and a tree trunk. “I can be myself. Plus it’s therapeutic and it keeps me out of trouble.”

Sassani said there is artistic merit behind his medium – chainsaw carving. “Painting and drawing skills are similar to understanding carving,” he said. “Drawing is the power of observation -- lines, shapes, sizes and angles. For this, you just have to pick up the mechanical end of it – the chain saw.”

Plus, he said, he has to consider the wood as his canvas. “Wood is medium that shrinks and cracks,” he said. “You have to work around that and understand wood itself. You have to know what areas to remove to help prevent it from cracking. I’ll carve in any wood, but mainly I carve in softwoods since it’s easier on the equipment and faster.”

Sassani had been an elementary art teacher in Maryland and had concentrated on painting in the traditional “plein air” style until about eight years ago when he picked up a chainsaw.

“I saw other people’s pieces and learned by doing it,” said Sassani, who participates in wood carving competitions and festivals across the country.

He said bears, eagles and other wildlife are the most popular forms he carves. But one of the most unusual pieces he has done is a statue of St. Pauline, patron saint of diabetes, for a site in Northumberland County, where a foundation is established in her name.

“I can carve anything you want,” he said. “I just have to do a little homework and I just have to be able to see it in the wood.”

Clients commission him to create the hanging art. He has fabric fireworks floating between buildings in Kansas.

He has 30-foot tall banners hanging from trees on the campus of Edinboro University to promote homecoming.

He said the sculptures they’ve created for the non-profit, neighborhood-revitalization group he’s a part of, Natrona Comes Together, have an educational component to them – the history of Natrona, steelworkers, fish and butterflies of Pennsylvania.

“It really has opened up a lot of possibilities to create something interesting and at the same time make a living,” Godfrey said.

“It’s not only something beautiful, we wanted to teach also,” Godfrey said.

“A healthy community has to have healthy art. Art transcends.”

Additionally, Godfrey said the A-K Valley is as good a place as any to be an artist. “It shows you don’t have to be in an urban environment to be a successful artist,” Godfrey said. “The Internet and social media makes that happen.”

Godfrey said art of all kinds helps improve the quality of life for society.

“Art brings everything good to a community,” Godfrey said. “It not only

n more than 25 years as owner of Moondog’s Pub in Blawnox, Ron Esser has seen changes in the live music scene in the AK Valley. “I can tell you they don’t come like they used to,” said Esser, 56, a Frazer resident who launched the venue in 1989 after managing the popular Shadyside club, Graffiti.

“In the ‘80s, that was the thing to do -- to go see bands,” he said. “But with the evolution of electronic devices, people interact less and less every day. Everybody wants to be the star. They want to be on YouTube. Why should they pay to come see you when they can make their own TV show? Like

Warhol said, everybody gets their 15 minutes of fame; but people get it a lot easier nowadays.”

“Audiences don’t come to see bands like they used to, but live music is absolutely an intricate part of society.” The music that live bands offer, Esser said, helps draw patrons to venues where the bands play, keeps music alive for generations to come and benefits the community when bands donate their time and talent to fundraisers.

“Bands perform at a lot of fundraisers and that’s pretty admirable these days,” Esser said. “Getting clubs and all

those bands together is a feat.” Esser is a part of that live music benefit himself. As chairman of the Pittsburgh Blues Festival, he has helped raise more than $2 million over the past 20 years for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

Just in September alone, dozens of local bands donated their time to several benefit concerts in the AK Valley: A Concert for Anna at the Praha Hotel in Tarentum featured 15 bands during a three-day rock show, which for seven years has benefitted a different member of the community with Bill Vulgris healthcare-related of Killer good Band

The New Ken Arnold Social in the Park’s Band Blast at Memorial Park in New Kensington featured 12 bands who played to help raise money to upgrade the park. Funds raised helped renovate the stage and the bathrooms there.

The End of Summer Jam took place last night at Falcon Park in Ford City with 12 bands doing their part for Cody’s Crew Foundation, which benefits a young boy with cancer.

Rock for Life has for 15 years been raising money for various community members’ health care expenses. This year, 18 bands played at Iselin Field near Saltsburg. Steve Craven and After the Fall bandmate Matt Ferrante of Avonmore, organize Rock for Life.

They also are members of Slant6, the band seen in the recent Matt Damon film, “Promised Land,” shot in the AlleKiski Valley.

launched Pennsylvania Rock Show fundraiser and agrees that performers are a special group of people. “The whole music scene is like a big family,” Domiano said. “They get along and they take their talents and use them to help other people.”

Domiano said that at local shows you’ll find members from other bands at the show watching. “They support each other,” he said. “And sometimes the band putting on the show will invite other band members up on stage to play songs with them. Plus all

these bands at benefits play for free.

That’s a big deal. With spending gas money to get there and equipment, in the end they don’t make money but they’re giving back to the community.”

Domiano created the Web sites, www. akmusicscene.com and www.parockshow.com, which contain information on when and where local bands are playing. He also puts together monthly broadcasts that can be heard on the websites that include songs and interviews of local bands.

grown since then. And, like the musicians who play benefit concerts, he doesn’t make money from the sites.

“There are no ads,” he said. “I probably could make money off it, but I just like to help I guess.”

Domiano fits his music-promotion hobby around his full-time job as a computer and science teacher at St. Sebastian Regional School in Belle Vernon. Musicians also usually keep their day jobs. Members of local band All My Monsters all have “real” jobs and say they play for the fun, not necessarily to make money.

He supplements the electronic publicity with more traditional newspaper event listings for the live music acts, which it has two to three times a week, primarily rock, blues, country, bluegrass. Plus, it specializes in offering craft and microbrew beers, primarily from Pittsburgh area craft brewers.

“We have to be a destination because we have very little traffic going by our place,” he said, as they are in a rural area. “That’s where the music comes in to benefit us. The majority of the acts have their own following. We draw decent crowds on music nights.”

“Without sounding cheesy or whatever, it’s really a way of life,” Vasey said. “It’s a release that you can’t find anywhere else. Vasey said social media has helped get the word out about their band and the concert schedule. “I think it’s huge!”

Vasey said. “Every show we play is pushed hard by us on Facebook, Twitter and Reverb Nation and the audience sizes show it.”

Likewise, Elwood’s Pub, a tiny venue in Indiana Township, also benefits from social media to draw crowds to the bands it books.

For example, on the first Friday of the month, Elwood’s typically features “Doc and Tina,” a duo from Natrona Heights who plays Celtic and American folk music. “They’re a good draw,” Crowell said.

“The audience gets involved with singing and they kick up their heels.”

Crowell said summer slows down, however, since patrons are on vacation or having fun outside.

“Our real busy time with bands starts two weekends after Labor Day,” he said.

The future of live local music in the AK Valley may be heard at Club Radioactive in Kittanning, which offers music Saturday nights geared primarily toward patrons age 15 to 20. Mark Gibson, 50, of Kittanning, opened the site three years ago when his then-15-year-old daughter lamented there was no place for young people to hear music. Gibson coordinates activities at Club Radioactive between his changing shifts as a steelworker at Allegheny Ludlum and funds it through that salary.

“No, it’s not profitable,” Gibson said of the venue. “But it’s more than just than just a for-profit venture. We do a lot of things to give young musicians a place to perform and showcase their talent.” Gibson believes his club benefits the music scene and the community at large. “They don’t have to wait until they’re older to have a place to play that’s professional and where they can have their friends come to listen. I really hope I’m making a positive impact on the community.”

Gibson already is seeing the upshot of his efforts. A Lovely Crisis, a punk and alternative rock band whose members attended Burrell and Plum high schools, played Club Radioactive two years ago recently returned for the venue’s “Back to School” concert. “I guess I can say they graduated from here,” Gibson said. “They’re in their late teens now and are playing clubs in Pittsburgh. They played House of Blues in Cleveland. They’re moving up. I want them to remember us when they’re famous.”

“I love to write and play and perform music,” said Michael Vasey, 34, of Springdale, who plays guitar and sings along with bandmates Bryan Laskey, 38, of New Kensington on

“Social media is unparalleled when it comes to instantaneous publicizing,” said Dave Crowell, who runs the bar with his wife, Kathy. “A patron tweets `I’m here at Elwood’s. Come on down there’s a great band.’ That’s a real nice benefit from social media.”

He supplements the electronic publicity with more traditional newspaper event listings for the live music acts, which it has two to three times a week, primarily rock, blues, country, bluegrass. Plus, it specializes in offering craft and microbrew beers, primarily from Pittsburgh area craft brewers.

“We have to be a destination because we have very little traffic going by our place,” he said, as they are in a rural area. “That’s where the music comes in to benefit us. The majority of the acts have their own following. We draw decent crowds on music nights.”

“Without sounding cheesy or whatever, it’s really a way of life,” Vasey said. “It’s a release that you can’t find anywhere else. It’s empowering and vulnerable at the same time.” All My Monsters performs regularly in clubs and at a number of benefits throughout the year. “It’s always fulfilling to donate our time and talents for a good cause,” Vasey said. “We do it a lot.”

Vasey said social media has helped get the word out about their band and the concert schedule. “I think it’s huge!”

Vasey said. “Every show we play is pushed hard by us on Facebook, Twitter and Reverb Nation and the audience sizes show it.”

Likewise, Elwood’s Pub, a tiny venue in Indiana Township, also benefits from social media to draw crowds to the bands it books.

For example, on the first Friday of the month, Elwood’s typically features “Doc and Tina,” a duo from Natrona Heights who plays Celtic and American folk music. “They’re a good draw,” Crowell said.

“The audience gets involved with singing and they kick up their heels.”

Crowell said summer slows down, however, since patrons are on vacation or having fun outside.

“Our real busy time with bands starts two weekends after Labor Day,” he said.

“A lot of time, people don’t realize how much work goes into a show because they don’t see us,” explained Susan Szymanowski Shirey, props chair for New Kensington Civic Theatre. “There’s no way to put on a show without them.” explains how the theatre backdrops of the world are the grown-up playgrounds for some.

“It’s so multi-disciplinary,” she said. “Everyone brings a touch of their own personalities and personal experiences.

A variety of people come together at a number of the local theater companies to have fun and bring another’s story to life. At Stage Right, volunteers with backgrounds in education, nursing, banking, engineering and other fields share their professional expertise, as well as the workload of putting together the details of live shows in their community.

Be it set design, costumes, lighting, props or even box office sales, these are the people that theater-goers may forget about -- or maybe not even see – who are responsible for these little minute pieces of the play.

Although many of the local community theaters are run solely by volunteers and their time, it’s just the will to want to work with others is what is needed.

“No experience is necessary. We can help you get some experience,” said Szymanowski Shirey. “We’ve had people volunteer from every walk of life. We’ll find a niche to put you in.”

And although unpaid, many volunteers of the backstage crews of local groups have a number of years into the stage. Wein, for one, has been involved in theater since high school and Szymanowski Shirey has been since the ‘70s.

And do they expect any acclaim for what they do?

“There are so many aspects more than the actors and performances on stage,” said Spatz.

Being a farmer, Spatz said that being a part of theatre adds a good variety to life.

“I don’t have to have that,” said Wein. “I do it because I enjoy it. I’m eager to be involved with people who love the arts.”

Whether it’s a comedy, drama, romantic encounter or historic reenactment, local theater groups strive to bring words alive to audiences from pieces of paper to dialogues translated across stages that become a character’s being.

“It’s a creative endeavor. I love to see the show come together. It’s incredibly rewarding,” agreed Beth Spatz, who

“I think there are fewer people working behind the scenes,” said Bill Boag, who has worked in lighting for Stage Right for 40-plus years. “We get floaters, for actors, who come and audition for a part and if they get a part, they’ll come and do a show. We also get friends of people who live in the neighborhoods around the community.”

“There are (fewer) people interested in live theater period. Many area theaters are having the same difficulties just getting people to attend shows. It is sad to see, she said. “ I think that many have their comfortable home theaters and just do not go to the theater anymore.”

“They can absolutely be taught. All volunteers need is a willingness to be a part of a really fun and rewarding endeavor,” Ferrara said. “If they have some old clothes, they can help paint the set or they can help an actor with a quick change backstage, iron costumes, gather props or do many other jobs involved in putting on a show.”

Said Civic Theatre Secretary Cynthia Ansani said, “I believe more of our members are performers, as well as behind the scenes workers. Due to dwindling numbers, everyone has to wear numerous hats.”

im Bonner makes a habit of bombing his Tarentum neighborhood. Seed bombing that is. As the executive director of the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania, Bonner takes advantage of the organization’s recipe for floral proliferation by throwing “bombs” made of wildflower seeds and propagation material into empty lots and hardto-reach areas that are in need of some blooms – hopefully ones that will attract beneficial insects like bees and butterflies.

“People who have been brought up in the country, or whose parents introduced them into the environment, don’t need a lot of support to get outside,” Bonner said. “Others, and there are an increasing number, who grew up in the city or their parents didn’t take them out, want to do it or think they want to do it, but they may have a little trepidation. ment, Judy Lindberg of Washington Township grew up participating in all kinds of outdoor activities. She raised her family that way and continues to prompt her friends to do so, too.

“I find that when I take people out they really enjoy it and they start going themselves,” she said. “I took a woman I worked with on a hike on the Apollo Trail a while back. I kept telling her `You can make it.’ Eventually we were climbing up a hill and leaves and mud were flying out of her fingers. She tells that story over and over again.

But I think she did enjoy herself.”

She took another friend in a motorized wheelchair on a trail near Saltsburg and gets together with several women whom she described as “not really outdoor people” kayaking on the Kiski and Conemaugh rivers from Apollo to Saltsburg.

“A lot of people can appreciate being outside, they just have to be given a way to do it without being intimidated,” she said.

Lindberg and her husband, Robert Kozarek, are originally from Minnesota where even though the winters are long and cold, people take advantage of the outdoors.

“You can find people riding bikes though the snow,” Lindberg said. “There were bike races on the lakes when they’re frozen over. In the summer, they take their snowmobiles and see how far they can get on the water before they start sinking.”

Likewise, when she and her husband were raising their family, the pond on their property was the site of activity for the entire neighborhood. “We had wonderful skating parties in the winter,” she said. “Every Brownie I had

in my troop caught a fish there. The kids would ride bicycles off the dock.

They’d have a rope on it and pull it back in. A lot of our family life centered around the pond.”

Now retired, the couple regularly cross-country skis at Northmoreland Park and hikes and bikes the Valley’s various rails-to-trails. And these days their daughters are grown, but they continue to participate in outdoor activities, one of which Lindberg said she herself has not yet tried – geocaching.

treasure hunt using GPS-enabled devices. Participants make their way through woods or even city streets to a particular GPS coordinate and endeavor to find the “treasure” hidden there. The cache can contain a log book where they sign their name and offer comments about the challenge.

Sometimes there is actual booty to be discovered, but something must be left in exchange for the next person.

“A lot of people can appreciate being outside, they just have to be given a way to do it without being intimidated,” That’s the aim of the Armstrong County Tourist Bureau’s Armstrong GeoTrail – not only locals, but also tourists can pick up a passport at the bureau, turn on their GPS-enabled devices and try to locate 25 caches at different historical sites throughout the county. When a cache is found, participants punch their passports and when the passport is filled, they can return to the bureau office to receive a commemorative coin.

Kevin Andrews, director of the Armstrong County Tourist Bureau, said quite a few people have come in from out of town.

“There was a woman from Virginia who stayed an entire week doing the whole trail,” Andrews said.

near them. Initially geocachers needed GPS units to find the coordinates and locations, but these days many smart phones have GPS capability, making the sport more accessible to everyone.

Dennis Hawley, program coordinator with Crooked Creek Environmental Learning Center, said he first geocached in 2006.

“We had received a grant to develop the Cowanshannock Trail at Buttermilk Falls,” he said. “Someone said there’s a geocache up there. I looked into what that even was, and then I got the fever for it. There are hundreds of them around. It’s a good way to get out and about.”

Hawley said all the geocache hunts vary – some treks are easy, others offer difficult terrain. Some caches are simple to find, others are tiny and hidden and even disguised by special compartments shaped like a fake rock or animal droppings.

“It adds another dimension to hiking,” he said. “When you find it you can read the log book and see other people’s opinions. It’s pretty addictive once you’ve started. We’ve had people from all over the country passing though and get to see this place they’d never see otherwise.

“It’s really meant a lot to get people out and about through the county. To see historical points and help them learn about the county,” he said. “There’s a lot of history here that a lot of people aren’t necessarily aware of. Plus it stimulates the economy. They stop at a store and buy food and stay overnight.”

Heading south in Harrison Township, Allegheny County, Harrison Hills Park contains one of the more intriguing geocaches, Hawley said. The “Syzygy” geocache has five stages, and includes challenging terrain and a puzzle that must be solved before moving on to the next part of the challenge.

Its description and location on geocaching.com includes humorous warnings: “If at any point your GPS is taking you over a cliff, resist the urge to follow it. Be sure to take a moment or two to appreciate some of the dramatic views.”

Local birding enthusiast Paul Hess said he likes Harrison Hills Park, not for its geocache treasures, but for the hidden gems that can be found in the trees.

“My very favorite place is Harrison Hills Park in Natrona Heights,” Hess said. “Its variety of bird species is tremenTRIB-TOTAL MEDIA

dous. An amazing 186 different species of birds have been found there since the park opened in 1971.

“Harrison Hills is known especially for being one of very few places where a bird called the Worm-eating Warbler breeds in southwestern Pennsylvania,” Hess continued. “It is unusual because it builds its nest in vegetation on the steep side of the park’s high cliff. This is the only place in Allegheny County where this species has nests, and many bird watchers come from far around to try to see one.”

Hess, , 74, of Harrison, has been birdwatching since he was a boy and has helped promote this activity to others by writing for various birding publications. A retired Valley News Dispatch managing editor, Hess writes for the local Audubon Society bulletin, the Three Rivers Birding Club’s newsletter “The Peregrine,” the American Birding Association’s magazine “Birding,” and a number of books for National Geographic and other publishers.

The Audubon Society runs Beechwood and Todd and also Succop Nature Preserve Butler. All three all offer birdwatching and even more unusual programs, including making those seed balls Bonner throws, creating your own walking stick or playing extreme croquet, whose course is more rugged and fasterpaced and uses outsized mallets, balls and wickets than the original game.

And while some people like a calming walk or bike ride along the area’s rails to trails, some residents have been spotted hooking up their sled dogs for racing practice along the 12 miles of the Butler-Freeport Community Trail. And as delicate trillium cover the forest floor, ultimate mountain bike riders – known as the Roaring Run Rock Riders -- fly over, under, around and through natural obstacles along the trails of the Roaring Run Watershed Association property along the Kiski River in Apollo, Armstrong County.

Whatever the activity, Hess said the AK Valley’s outdoor recreation spots benefit the overall community socially, economically and educationally.

“These areas provide tremendous recreational values not only for watching birds and other wildlife but also, of course, for hiking, biking, picnicking, children’s activities, and simply relaxing in beautiful surroundings. Economically, many outdoor activities require picnic food to hiking shoes, from bikes to cross-country skis, from binoculars to rain gear. Visitors from outside the area buy meals, gas, and may stop to shop at local stores. The other value is an appreciation of the need for conservation—protecting wildlife’s natural places from building development, stream pollution, and other damage to natural habitats that are necessary for wildlife’ survival.”
