2021 Annual REPORT CARD

A Letter from the CEO

Dear Friends,

Life is full of unexpected experiences—challenges, celebrations, loss and laughter. For 130 years, Child Saving Institute (CSI) has been providing hope and healing to local children and families through all life experiences—good and bad.

We are proud to continue to provide high quality programs and services to children and families when they need them most. Whether it is a time of great happiness or one of heartfilled sorrow, at CSI, we believe all children deserve to live safe, happy childhoods.

As the needs of the community change, so do our services. Within the last few years, we have nearly doubled our Mental Health Services program, which continues to grow even to this day. With more children, teens and families seeking therapy and medication management services, CSI is adapting and expanding to meet this growing need.

Additionally, we recently launched our Family Empowerment Program which provides support and healing to survivors of domestic violence. The research behind processing and healing from domestic violence shows connectedness is key. CSI’s Family Empowerment Program provides connection and support not only to the parent/caregiver but also children in the household that were exposed to abuse and/or witnessed violence. This is just one way CSI has adapted to the evolving needs of the community.

As we continue on this journey, we will remain diligent at evaluating the needs, assessing our resources and working as hard as we can to help as many children and families as possible. We could not do this without the support of our generous donors. Thank you for supporting us throughout the years and for many more to come.

Family Empowerment Program Brings Hope

Ten-year-old Teddy was referred to Child Saving Institute’s (CSI) Family Empowerment Program along with his siblings and mother as the family had experienced violence within their home. Shy and reserved, Teddy distanced himself from the other children and refrained from engaging in activities with his peers.

Within the Family Empowerment Program, parents and caregivers who are survivors of domestic violence come together once a week to attend classes in order to process and heal from past trauma.

During the same time, their children attend classes where they engage in fun, interactive activities proven to address, process and heal trauma. Together, families grow and develop skills to find stability and new hope.

Teddy was one of 32 children who participated in the 10-week Family Empowerment Program in 2021. Like many, he was apprehensive and reluctant about being there.

Week after week, CSI staff got to know Teddy, slowly and at his own pace. They

worked with him one-on-one to review the materials and complete activities individually. After time, Teddy began to engage with his peers and integrate himself into the group setting.

During the last group session, Teddy was fully immersed in the program. He went from avoiding all interaction with the other children to creating “secret” handshakes and nicknames. He even shared with the group leader that he enjoyed coming to class every week and learning new things despite being scared at the beginning.

Teddy couldn’t wait to receive his certificate of completion—asking when he would get HIS certificate several times as they were being handed out. The beam in his eyes and grin from ear to ear showed Teddy’s excitement as he proudly held his certificate in his hands.

Teddy came full circle, showing that change is possible and healing can be achieved through compassion, support and connection.
