As you know, I am the mother of two teenage boys and I like to think I am connected to them in a positive way.

Do you ever stop and think about the number of people you know and how you got to know them? Life is all about connections - we connect with our partners, children, coworkers, family and people in the community. We also connect with our jobs, hobbies and interests and passions.

Some connections we make last a life time and others are just for a brief moment. It’s not the length of time that you make the connection for but the impact it has on you.

I meet the most fascinating people, whether it is an advertiser, someone with an article or someone who tells me a story about someone they have met. As you can well imagine I read, re-read all the articles that come across my desk. I have read all of our magazines more than once and I am still moved by the people who have contributed. Some of the stories are timeless and four years later many still impact me.

We picked connections as a theme for this issue because I felt it was a topic we could all relate to.One of the strongest connections most of us make is with family. Cindy and Ron Cannan value not only the connection they have with their daughters and grandson but also the connection to community (page 6).

If you are new to Kelowna a great place to start would be the Kelowna Newcomers Club, it is a great way to connect with people. (page 42) Sometimes it’s not until we change careers or retire that we connect with our creative side.

Bruce Jones and Alex Fong have been friends for years. Alex mentored Bruce to experiment with 4

paint. Check out some of Bruce’s work on page 30.

Sometimes we connect with things that are not so pleasant… Michele Morris is a dynamic woman who was recently diagnosed with cancer. She is using her humour and positive attitude not only to beat this disease, but also to stay connected with those around her.The first blow was being diagnosed with breast cancer, and then ten weeks later, Michele was diagnosed with leukemia. You will be inspired by her story and her decision to “ride the positive train.”(page 14) At the end of the day, the connections we make can last a lifetime. It’s people, places and things that inspire us to do things for others and for ourselves. As you know, I am the mother of two teenage boys and I like to think I am connected to them in a positive way. Sometimes the conversations we have are out of this world. The brain of a teenage boy is“scary”and there are times Devon,Dallas and I are “disconnected.” But I love them and I will never stop showing them that connecting with our community is not only important, but will help them grow.

Being together, having fun or just doing things side by side helps to strengthen our bond and connection.

As we approach the half century mark of our lives, we start to reflect, we analyze what we have accomplished, what our lives have become and what we will still want to do. For me it has always been the simplest things that bring me the greatest joy.

Ron and I have a great connection with our daughters Amanda, Ashley and Amy. They have grown up to be three very beautiful and independent women and we are grateful that our connection with them is strong.

Amy, at the age of 20, is a second-year business student at Okanagan College and has a passion for people, travel and the hospitality industry. Ashley, our middle daughter is a Medical Office Assistant and wiser than her 22 years. Our eldest Amanda is 25. She’s an Evelyn Charles hairstylist and very creative. She is also a wonderful single parent to the pride and joy of our lives, grandson Marcel.

Marcel was born on Valentine’s Day in 2007 - a day that changed our lives. Ron and I like to joke that on February 13, I went to sleep with my husband and the next morning woke up next to a grandpa.

Having a strong bond with Marcel is critical and we make an effort to spend a lot of quality time with him.

I have learned that connecting with Marcel does not always require a verbal exchange. Being together, 6

having fun or just doing things side by side helps to strengthen our bond and connection. Without even trying you are having an impact and it’s quite funny when you catch a glimpse of yourself in your grandchildren.

For instance, I am a bit of clean freak, especially when it comes to our cars. Marcel knows this and enjoys helping me wash and wipe the windows and the wheels. Now when we are out for a drive he will say,“Grandma, the car is dirty and needs to be cleaned.”

I wear many hats - mother, grandmother, wife and daughter and I hold down a job. Sometimes it feels like I am being pulled in too many directions. Ron’s job as a Member of Parliament means he is away all week and while he concentrates on working for the community, I focus on balancing my work with my responsibilities at home, making sure that part of our life stays stable and strong.

At the end of the day, the things I cherish most in my life are my relationships with my family.

As parents, we transfer our values, directly and indirectly, and when our children go out into the world they take those values with them.

We want Marcel to know that growing up in a strong family and community is important to us and we hope that as he gets older it will be something he takes pride in as well.

Family, friends and faith are the priorities in our life. I believe if you cherish these things, no matter what the challenges, you’ll be OK. BEYOND 50 • WINTER 2010/11

Many of you may know him as “Peter the Great,” who lives here in West Kelowna. He is the master pastry chef who is famous for his wedding cakes,...

“Peter the Great” works on the 4’ x 6’ Canada Day cake.

Some of us wait all of our lives for that chance meeting with someone famous - maybe a movie star, singer or world leader. For me, that encounter came when I met an angel among us called Peter Klein.

Many of you may know him as “Peter the Great,” who lives here in West Kelowna. He is the master pastry chef who is famous for his wedding cakes, tortes and slab cakes for special occasions.

Peter is best known for making the 6 x 4 foot Canada Day cake we enjoyed at Westside Daze, something he has done for 12 years. He was the mastermind behind the 10 x 4 foot cake,complete with a chocolate replica of the bridge on it,a major attraction at the WR Bennett Bridge opening ceremony. And more recently, he baked the cake to celebrate the opening of West Kelowna’s new police station.

There is no doubt that all of these undertakings mark a chef worthy of the title “Peter the Great,” however, what lies beneath all the flour and eggs is what defines his greatness.

In 2007, I met Peter when I was looking for someone to bake cookies for Success By 6’s Milk and Cookie Events. I needed someone who could take special care to make sure the cookies met certain dietary and allergenic needs. A friend recommended Peter, so I phoned him. I recall him asking a few questions about the events and as soon as he found out it was for children aged six and under, he was in.

The first year, he made 48 dozen, and, of course, a few extras so no child went without. The next year it was 85 dozen, neatly wrapped and stored with tender loving care.

The other day I asked him why he agrees to bake more than 1,000 cookies for Success By 6 each year. He simply said,“That’s me, if someone asks me to do something, and if I can do it, I will.”

There is no doubt that Peter has a very generous heart who is worthy of angel status. He is an avid Westbank

In closing, Peter Klein is the “greatest” of all the angels I know. He doesn’t do it for recognition. He does it because that’s what you do. He cares about others above himself, which is why he is an angel I am proud to know.

On behalf of the hundreds of young children who enjoy his special cookies at our events thank-you!

Rotarian, in fact, he is the longest serving member dating back to 1977, and a distinguished recipient of a Paul Harris membership. He and his wife, Christa,also raised three children while hosting exchange students from all over the world, many of whom they have stayed in touch with and call family. He is an accomplished businessman who ran two bakeries in the late 1970s while raising his family and volunteering in the community.

In the holistic health field, we know that this flow of intelligence happens through the “Mind-Body Connection.” To be healthy, there has to be smooth communication between the brain and the body.

Kelowna International Airport has become quite the hub for people to connect, whether it’s for business or personal travel. Last January, I was on my way to a health and wellness conference. The valley was fogged in, and all flights were delayed. As the day went along, more and more travelers showed up, only to have to sit and wait. Eventually, all flights were cancelled, and the travelers were asked to come back the next day to reschedule.

As I sat back and watched the day unfold, I thought of

how similar the situation was to the loss of health many people are experiencing. According to Dr. Deepak Chopra, “All disease results from a disruption of the flow in intelligence.” In the holistic health field, we know that this flow of intelligence happens through the “Mind-Body Connection.” To be healthy, there has to be smooth communication between the brain and the body. Many people, however, don’t put much thought into what the actual connection is - your spine! Your central nervous system, which connects your mind to your entire body, runs through your spine.

When there is a miscommunication over the Mind-Body Connection, the result is a loss of health. Christopher Reeve is an example of this. He fell off a horse and broke his neck.

help him breathe. The interesting part is that he didn’t hurt his legs, or his lungs - he hurt the connection between his brain and his body.

So, back to the airport: the fog is a major disruption or interference to the flow and connection of passengers trying to get to and from the airport.

The result? Passengers are stressed and frustrated, like muscles that are tight and knotted when a nerve is pinched. The airports are crowded with frustrated travelers, like inflamed and congested tissue. People aren’t able to conduct business or connect with friends and family, like your foot falling asleep when you sit on it for a long period.

The good news was that the fog cleared in the next couple days, and it was “business as usual” at the airport.

I invite you to climb aboard the “Positive Train” with us and help us to see all the amazing sights along the way.

There are some things a woman may not want to hear.

Like,“Those jeans do make your butt look bigger.” Or,“I know this is your first pregnancy, but you’re having quadruplets.”

But there is one thing that no woman ever expects to hear and that’s: “I’m very sorry to tell you, you have breast cancer.” And yet all too often those words are spoken.

I heard them on August 6, 2010, and although the radiologist spoke for another five minutes, all I heard was a loud and obnoxious drumbeat. It was the kind of noise you hear at a stoplight when the car beside you has its sound system blaring and you can feel the vibration of the bass in your feet as the windows shake. It wasn’t until later that I realized the noise I was hearing was my own heartbeat, caught somewhere between my throat and my eardrums.

As I tried to digest this information I felt as though I had been forced to join a club whose membership was growing at a rapid rate despite the fact that no one wanted to be part of it in the first place.

A few hours later my husband and I sat together on the couch in stunned silence holding hands and shivering under a blanket on one of the Okanagan’s hottest summer days.

That night I woke up to the sounds of my inner voice shouting, “I have cancer, I have cancer!” And suddenly I began to shout back, “You have to fight this, you have to beat this, come on Michele you can do this.” And that’s when boarded the “Positive Train,” determined to travel this journey with optimism, strong will and plenty of humour.

In true type-A personality fashion, I began to make lists.

I needed to create a support group of family, friends and co14

workers, I needed to clear my plate of all stressors in my life.

I also needed to become informed about this cancer and I needed to assist my body, spirit and mind in the healing process. I started to see this cancer as a gift, an opportunity which placed me on a new path. I woke my husband to share my new found courage and he said, “I know you can beat this thing, Michele, and I will be with you every step of the way.”

A diagnosis of cancer provides a clarity like no other. All aspects of life are prioritized and what becomes abundantly clear is the need for “connection.” That means reaching out to others for love and support, utilizing staff and volunteers at a Cancer Clinic and seeking the advice and expertise of an excellent medical team. I have made all of those connections and so many more.

ing along Mission Creek a few days after my diagnosis and a beautiful young girl came up to me and said,“I have been watching you walk and I just wanted to say you are doing such a good thing for your body and mind by being out here in the fresh air and I want to encourage you to keep going.” I took her hand in mine and said, “You have no idea how much your words mean to me, I just found out I have cancer.”

She told me she didn’t want to offend me but that Jesus had his eye on me. I smiled and replied that I wasn’t offended. “I’ve been praying a lot lately, more than I have in quite some time. In fact, I’m praying so hard, my head’s about to fall off! By the way my name’s Michele.” She laughed and said,“I’m Rachel, you keep going Michele, you can do it.”

We let go of each other’s hands and she continued on her run. I walk Mission Creek every day and I have never seen Rachel again but I think of her often and how the connection we made will remain with me forever.

If there is someone you know who shares a diagnosis like this, I encourage you to reach out and make a connection with them. Allow them to cry or just feel sad when they need to, make them laugh or smile often, and let them know they are not alone. Talking one-on-one with a person who had been through some of the roughest par ts of her cancer journey had given her real hope.

Sue’s cancer diagnosis was a lifealtering experience. In 2006, when she learned she had colorectal cancer,there was so much to think about her mind was soon swimming with questions.

What happens next? What will my treatment be like? How will I decide on my treatment options?

When she learned about the Canadian Cancer Society’s CancerConnection program, a free and confidential program that puts people newly diagnosed with cancer in touch with volunteers who have been through a similar experience, she immediately signed up.

Today, she reflects fondly on all the support she found through the service.

“I remember clearly just how helpful the phone calls from my CancerConnection volunteer were during my nine months of treatment,”she says.

When Sue finished her cancer treatment, she was eager to return to her normal, busy life with her husband and family. As a practicing physio-therapist for over 30 years, Sue was happy to get back to business and she again enjoyed hobbies like cycling, skiing and rollerblading.

But the memories and connections 16

made through CancerConnection never left her. Talking one-on-one with a person who had been through some of the roughest parts of her cancer

journey had given her real hope. She felt her volunteer really understood her situation and having access to that support was key in her recovery. Sue

knew she wanted to do that for someone else. That’s when she made the decision to join CancerConnection as a volunteer herself.

“CancerConnection did so much for me. I’m happy to find time each week to make some phone calls to help others with their journey,”she says.

Her motto these days is: “Figure out three things that give you joy, then do at least one of them once a day!”

And according to the Canadian Cancer Society,Sue’s experience and positive outlook have had a great impact on the clients she works with, who describe her has“wonderful and helpful.”

I would never have achieved what I have if I didn’t have the support and encouragement...

Errol: It’s interesting how when you meet someone you seem to make an instant connection.With myself I will walk into a place and get a certain “vibe” that makes me feel instantly relaxed and want to stay a while or like when I walk into the dentist’s office, no matter how hard I try I never feel relaxed.

The same goes with meeting people and, for whatever reason, there’s that connection and talk just flows easily and naturally. On the other hand, the opposite is true. I can meet someone and, no matter how hard I try, I can’t achieve that same connection. But that’s OK. We are not all able to feel comfortable in every place and with everyone.

The reason I mention this is that it is exactly the same when it comes to choosing a gym and/or a personal trainer.

Most gyms these days have basically the same equipment, give or take a few machines, but what does make the difference, at least to me, is the atmosphere.

Some gyms give you the feeling they are all business and the people working out there are interested in achieving results and meeting their individual goals. Others seem more like places where people come more to enjoy each other’s company and socialize, while still enjoying some physical activity.

That’s why I advise people to check out different gyms before signing up. I believe that every gym,at least here in Kelowna, offers you aweek’s worth of free workouts just so you can assess their atmosphere. Take some time and choose the right one for you.

The same thing applies when it comes to choosing your personal trainer.

Most personal trainers have similar training or education and what it really comes down to,at least in my mind,is how you connect with the individual who will be helping you achieve your fitness goal. Some women are more comfortable being trained by another woman and there is nothing wrong with that, but make sure any trainer understands your needs and can accommodate your individual situation. By that I mean that if you have physical issues, like hip surgery or knee replacements, make sure the trainer has experience working with people with these issues.

For example, my wife and training partner Judi has both Lupus and Fibromyalgia.When she works with people who have either or both of these issues she has in depth knowledge of what is going on in that individual’s body and structures the workout regime with that in mind.

energizing, inspiring and challenging. I really believe that the key to success is having a partner or two to motivate you. It’s really does help to have mentors and/or a gym buddy to help keep you on track.

I am so glad that I decided to get back to taking care of my body and my mind and the results have been amazing.

Overall, I have lost over 22 lbs and 14 inches. I am sleeping better,have more energy and I am overall happier with who I am. The comments from friends, family and acquaintances have been generous and heartfelt. I really am proud of all that I have accomplished and will continue to do so.

I would never have achieved what I have if I didn’t have the support and encouragement of Judi, Errol and my two boys, Devon and Dallas. The amount you withdraw from your portfolio can depend on fac tors such as your age, risk tolerance, how your money is invested and the desire to leave a legacy.

Regarding the make-up of your portfolio,it should provide you with an appropriate amount of income. HST-What’s Really Changed?

Our B.C. government chose to implement the so-called “Hated Sales Tax” on July 1, 2010, to presumably provide a level playing field for businesses in our province. It is intended to allow many of them the opportunity to charge a competitive price and make a similar amount of profit as the businesses not paying PST on products and services they buy.

Prior to the implementation of Harmonized Sales Tax (HST), businesses paid an estimated $1.9 billion in PST costs related to products and services they buy. The implementation of HST eliminated a large part of this cost for most businesses in B.C. Several studies have indicated that in the decade since harmonized provinces in Atlantic Canada implemented HST,business investments there have surged, as have job creation and both personal and corporate income.

What does HST mean for most consumers? HST applies to all products and services that the GST applied to,so we have seen some changes in what we pay. In the grocery store, very little has changed as most items we buy at the grocery store did not attract GST and similarly do not attract HST. At the mall there also has been very little change. Services that most of us buy on a regular basis, such as hair cuts,dry cleaning,maid services, hemming your pants or waxing your eyebrows, all cost more with HST applying.

Many other services that most of us obtained regularly such as auto repairs, cell phone use and long distance charges still cost the same as PST and GST previously applied for a total of 12 per cent total tax, which is the same as the HST rate.

Fees we pay for fun such as golf, skiing, gym memberships, zip trekking and river rafting are all higher by seven per cent with HST applying.

Note that rebates of the B.C. HST exist for both gas and residential utilities so that there was no change in the taxes you pay for these items under the HST system.

There are as many unique individuals as there is a diverse mixture of art.

Everyone is different when it comes to aesthetic sensibilities. Some pieces you will walk past uninterested and others will draw you in. This connection between art and the viewer becomes a mean-

I continue to peck away at other things on my retirement list, but painting is now one of my regular pastimes and a few painting days with Alex ever y summer are something I look forward to.

As I was contemplating retirement six years ago, I began to make a short bucket list of things I would like to do with all the time I was now devoting to work.

When I was a kid I always liked to draw and paint, so naturally one of the things to make my list was to take lessons. When I retired a few months later, I launched the next stage of my life with a long trip and while away I thought about how I would begin my new attempt at painting.

Being a type A personality and wanting to achieve results quickly, I wasn’t sure a year or two of night school was my cup of tea. Fortunately a good friend of mine is Alex Fong, one of the most well known and accomplished artists in the Okanagan. When I returned I asked Alex if he could help me out.

As he is extremely busy as an artist, he couldn’t dedicate time to actually teaching me. I suggested he bring his own paintings which he was working on over to my place on the lake and we would each do our own paintings side by side and enjoy a nice lunch and a glass of wine. As we are both lovers of food and wine he took the bait.

As we painted I asked questions, while Alex gave me tips and, of course, critiques of my work. My favourite will always be - “Geez, Bruce, that quail looks like a friggin’ Volkswagen.”

As I progressed and began painting on my own, Alex and I continued to spend days working and enjoying, wine, food 30

and friendship. As I tried new mediums and new styles, Alex would join in and we actually began painting large abstract canvasses together. This was not only fun, but the outcomes were great.

I continue to peck away at other things on my retirement list, but painting is now one of my regular pastimes and a few painting days with Alex every summer are something I look forward to.

In the last issue of Beyond 50 I introduced the concept of sage-ing, a creative adventure that awakens us to make connections, initiate change, and grow: to reap integrity and wisdom. Sage-ing is the blossoming of a lifetime. As a young girl, I was attracted to the colouring book activity of connect the dots. In middle age, I began to appreciate the game’s significance. I perceived finding meaning in experience to be akin to that early exercise, just more complex. In particular, I realized that feeling deeper understanding evolves when one sees the connections between self and the natural world.

Sage-ing With Creative Spirit is an invitation to become a seeker of one’s authenticity; to look at oneself with clear loving eyes; to savour wisdom gained, and to offer the best of who we are to ourselves, to those we love, to our communities and to our planet earth.

“Only experiences that profoundly alter our view of nature and reconnect us with the divinity in ourselves and in the environment can empower people...”

When I read these words, shared with me by another artist/seeker, I felt my heart open and fill with gratitude. I believe everything in nature breathes with the indomitable energy of life waiting to be exposed. Within each of us is nature’s life-giving energy eager to respond through creative acts that are honest expressions of the connections we feel.

Simply by allowing ourselves to awaken to nature and our hands to spontaneously record an expression in that 32

moment, we have the potential to awaken to nature and self: to be enlivened by the energy of the universe.

In my seeking, I became a walker, or perhaps more accurately, a wanderer, exploring nature with the curiosity and imagination of that young girl who loved to connect the dots and see the bigger picture. Painting and writing provide adventures into expressing the connections that my curiosity and imagination inspire. Drawing marks and brush strokes become expressive forms of energy which excite and release me. Finding the courage to create from inner knowing brings liberation. The process is more important than the product. Later, in my journal, words help me probe deeper into the layers of who I am. Everywhere I find resonance within and without. On Knox Mountain in Kelowna I experienced a full surge of Gaia Consciousness. Later, in my studio I gestated Homage to Gaia. When she exposed herself to me in this root, I felt the pain and courage of unseen sacrifice. I saw her begging for understanding. Connections initiate connection. Lori Mairs is a sculptor and artist in residence at the Woodhaven Nature Conservancy. She collaborates on an ECO ART research project with UBCO that brings artists into the park to interpret their work in direct response to nature. Volunteering is an effec tive way to mak e connections throughout our community. Over 46 per cent of us volunteer in B.C.

Connecting is part of living and aging. Like fitting prongs and loops of puzzle pieces together, there are two elements to connecting within our community. The first challenge is to find the services and support you need when you need them. The second step is to find ways to give your time, talent and treasures in ways that benefit others.

Volunteering is an effective way to make connections throughout our community. Over 46 per cent of us volunteer in B.C. People aged 55 to 64 years average 189 hours of volunteering, while people ages 65 and older average 196 hours.

To get the most out of your volunteer experiences, ask yourself why you want to volunteer. Is there a specific cause dear to your heart that has affected you, a close friend or

loved one? Are you driven to make a contribution, to give back because your life has been so fortunate? What are the specific skills you want to share with others? Is your goal to meet people? Perhaps you would rather volunteer with a group of friends?

Be blunt and ask yourself, ‘What do I want to get out of volunteering?’ Is there something new you want to explore - building fresh skills, working with different clientele, or participating on a team? There is enjoyment in helping others. Volunteering can bring structure to your life and a sense of excitement and anticipation to each day.

How much time do you want to give? Are you away certain times of the year? What works best: days, evenings or weekends? Is flexibility or consistency more important? Do you prefer long-term ongoing commitments or short-term project-oriented time frames?

What clientele appeals to you? Are you interested in children, youth or seniors? What about people with special needs and disabilities? Would

you work behind the scenes or online?

Perhaps teaming up with other professionals provides the best fit Volunteering possibilities seem endless. You can advocate, serve on a board, canvass for funds, or manage other volunteers. There are phones to answer, bookkeeping to complete, and special events to plan. You can pitch in at someone’s home, cooking, cleaning, gardening, fixing, painting and shoveling snow. Youth, children and adults

need mentors, tutors and team coaches.

This is our opportunity to recognize those people who made a difference in Kelowna for the year 2010.

In every city, people and organizations come together to make it a community. For the past 35 years, the Kelowna Civic and Community awards recognize those whose outstanding contributions make our community an exceptional place to live.

The Awards started as the Banquet of Champions in the 1970s,recognizing local sport teams for their achievements, as well as two individual awards: the Bob Giordano Memorial Award - recognizing an outstanding volunteer in the sport community; and the Augie Ciancone Memorial Award - recognizing an outstanding high school athlete.

Over the years, additional awards were added to the evening.

1975 - Inspired by the International Year of Women, the Sarah Donalda Treadgold Memorial Award was created as the first non-sport award celebrating a woman for her generous volunteerism.

1982 - The Banquet of Champions Sport & Citizen of the Year Awards were combined with the Art Council Awards to create a single event: The Kelowna Civic & Community Awards.

1986 - The Fred Macklin Memorial Award was created to recognize a man for his outstanding volunteerism in our community. The Male and Female Athletes of the Year and the Bryan Couling Athletic Team Award, which honours athletes who bring recognition to Kelowna, were added.

1992 - The Young Citizen of the Year award recognizes young people in the community. The award was split to recognize both a young man and woman each year.

1999 - The Central Okanagan Foundation Volunteer BEYOND 50 • WINTER 2010/11

Organization of the Year award honours a volunteer group that make a significant impact on the community.

2000 - The Anita Tozer Memorial Award for outstanding community service is unique in that it is the only award category that is decided by City Council.

2006 - The Corporate Community Award honours a local business that contributes through volunteer and financial support to the community.

As the awards celebration has grown, it has moved around the city. This year marks an exciting change as the event moves to the Kelowna Community Theatre. The celebration will feature a cocktail reception followed by the gala awards ceremony and entertainment.

There are so many people who make contributions within the city - this is our opportunity to recognize, celebrate and thank them for their efforts.

Nominations for Civic and Community Awards are open from January 3 to February 11, 2011.This is our opportunity to recognize those people who made a difference in Kelowna for the year 2010.

It was the best time of my life, I always say.So, here I am staying connected, back to where I started, a little less limber, a lot more patient. I’ve always been a caregiver, starting with my father who lived with a brain injury. My whole life has revolved around people: as a lifeguard, nurse, teacher (swimming, nursing), dean of Grade 9 boys at Notre Dame College, fundraiser, volunteer, activity director, and I even worked in finance.

Funny though, I really didn’t like that latter job, perhaps it didn’t have enough to do with people.

But the satisfaction I got from working most jobs is nothing compared to being with the daycare kids. With them, I really feel like I’m making a difference, and staying connected. They say the period between birth and age five is the most important time of your life in terms of development, and I truly believe that.

You’re learning things twice as fast as at any other period - these kids are like sponges - and how lucky am I to be a part of their growth.

I look up at my“wall of fame”(with the names and handprints of all the kids who have passed through our doors) and my BEYOND 50 • WINTER 2010/11

deepest wish is that I’ve had some kind of positive impact on them. Just the other day, I encountered this youngster who used to be in the daycare on the street with his dad and he came running up to me yelling,“Gramma, Gramma!”

He gave me a big hug, and then asked his Dad if he could come back with me! Wow, I do believe that is staying connected.

It’s funny, though, I don’t really believe in daycares. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s amazing for me that I’m here running a daycare with my daughter.I just wish I didn’t have to. I wish all parents had the option that I had to stay home with their kids. It’s a wonderful gift you can give your kids.

And, really in the end, it’s your legacy to this world - you’ll always have a little bit of yourself walking around.

It’s not only the ABC’s that matter - its kindness, compassion, sharing, honesty and being together.

These are the lessons that stay with you the rest of your life and really shape who you are. Yes, Gramma is staying connected with the daycare kids, in more ways than one (you can only imagine), and loves every minute of it.

Throughout her life SUSAN MCQUOID has used her boundless energy and huge capacity to give love in a vast collection of jobs, including teaching life skills, taking care of students as a resident dean for Notre Dame College, and providing nursing care to people in long-term care facilities.

Now, she works alongside her daughter at their family run home daycare, Gramma, Momma and Me.

B eing a par t of the Kelowna Museums, one of the many perks is talking with visitors and listening to them reminisce about what Kelowna used to be like. Whether it’s an uncle who used to have an apple orchard in East Kelowna, or a grandmother who lived in one of the first houses on Bernard Avenue, these stories remind me why we do what we do here at the Museum.

With the restoration of the Laurel Packinghouse,which began earlier this year and completed this September, we’ve enjoyed hearing lots of memories and stories about the Laurel and what she means to the community.

The historic Laurel Packinghouse is

the City of Kelowna’s first designated heritage building and a fitting reflection of the Okanagan Valley’s long and deep connection to the tree fruit industry in Canada. Built out of

Kelowna bricks, the packinghouse was in use from its construction in 1917 to the early 1970s. In 1982, restoration began on the Laurel and over the years it has become an integral part of the community.

Longtime Kelowna resident John Sugars shares one of his memories of the Laurel Packinghouse: “During the Second World War, most of the able-bodied men were in the armed forces and overseas, and during that period we ‘school kids’ were asked to help out by replacing those fighting men by working in the orchards and the packinghouses. In doing so, we were allowed to be off school to get employment in the BEYOND 50 • WINTER 2010/11

packinghouses.

“I was fortunate to get work at the Laurel Packinghouse.

As I recall, we made 50 cents an hour (a good wage in those days). My job was to ‘hand truck’ freshly made apple boxes.

Simpson’s Sawmill provided the ‘shook’ (all the pieces of wood to make a box) which the box maker would assemble with hammer and nails.As things progressed,a box-making machine was produced which simply necessitated the man to put the wood pieces into slots in the machine which then nailed the box together.

“That machine did all the hammering and nailing that the man used to do. He simply put the wood pieces in the right places, stepped on a foot pedal and the machine did the rest. I simply trucked the boxes, which were stacked about six-feet high, into a holding room - a huge room where all the boxes were kept until required for packing.We made pretty good money doing this work.”

The newly restored Laurel Packinghouse offers approximately 12,000 square feet of rental space which includes newly-fitted kitchen and washroom facilities and an open, flexible event area.The BC Wine Museum & VQA Wine Shop and the BC Orchard Industry Museum have moved back into their home and each Museum occupies completely redesigned exhibition space.

Are you new to the Kelowna area? You likely moved to the Valley for the great weather, and beautiful scenery.

Perhaps you love B.C. wine or like to golf and/or ski? But when you decided to move here,you knew you would have to make new friends. Well, the Kelowna Newcomers Club (KNC) is here to help.

The KNC is like other newcomer clubs in Canada. It is run by people who have been in Kelowna for less than three years.Its main purpose is to help freshly relocated people to meet others and this is achieved by arranging a broad range of activities, including sports, indoor and outdoor recreation, dining and cultural events. Some of the more popular activities include golf,wine tasting,bridge,touring Kelowna, hiking, dinner dances, and lunches and dinners at local eateries. Members can meet others in their homes or in public places.The KNC is open to all age groups, and singles and well as couples. It costs $25 per person per year to belong.

There is a monthly general meeting on the third Wednesday of each month, where people can find out about all the activities, as well as just meet other newcomers. Speakers from the community give short talks about their part of Kelowna. Recent speakers have included representatives from the Kelowna Symphony and Ballet, Emergency Services and the local media.The meetings start at 7:00 pm at the Recreation Center at 1360 Water Street.

Usually after their first year, many members of the KNC volunteer to help organize the activities. But after the third year, when hopefully many new friendships have been started,it is time to move on.That is where the Plus 3’s group allows people to keep in contact. One of the most popular events is the joint KNC and Plus 3’s annual Christmas party, usually held at the Capri Hotel.Another popular event is the spring dinner and dance, usually held outdoors at a local restaurant and or winery in June.

Most people find out about the KNC by word of mouth.

Someone, knowing that you are new, tells you that Newcomers is a great way to meet people. Others find the KNC online, at local visitor’s centers, or via printed media, such as Beyond 50.

An hour in the k itchen after the big meal takes care of the turkey and planning for meals for the nex t week. No one wants to do much cooking right after Christmas.

“Cook Once - Eat Twice” was my motto when I was working full time and trying to cook nutritious meals for two kids,my husband and myself. Later,when the kids were busy teenagers,my husband was traveling a lot and I was running my own business, it was revised to“Cook Once - Eat Three or Four times.” The freezer was my best friend.

Never is this more important than at Christmas.Busy days leading up to the holidays leave no time for cooking a nutritious meal every night. When high-fat fast food isn’t an option, you have to get more creative.

I like to think my cooking methods have rubbed off on my kids, as they’re both creative cooks.

COOK ONCE, EAT ALL WEEK: My daughter,Kristal,and her husband don’t have any kids but lead very busy lives. They both have heavy work schedules and are involved with the Vancouver Wine Society.

Weekends are for racing and camping. They have marathon cooking sessions once a week, often cooking a roast, a ham, a pot of chili and a pot of pasta sauce. She’s stretched my motto to“Cook Once, Eat All Week”.

Here is KRISTAL’S PASTA SAUCE: 3 large cans diced tomatoes 1 large can crushed tomatoes 1 large or 2 small cans tomato paste 3 or 4 peppers (red and yellow) 1 lb fresh mushrooms chopped or 2 cans 4 or 5 sausages, cooked and sliced diagonally 2 tbsp balsamic or red wine vinegar 1 tbsp each basil and oregano 1 tsp rosemary Pepper 44

Toss it all in a big pot and simmer for at least half an hour until veggies are tender. Serve over pasta with some fresh Parmesan. Freezes well.

CHRISTMAS LEFTOVERS: Christmas Day is a big day, a busy day, with the house full of family, lots of food cooking and everyone pitching in.The centrepiece, the traditional turkey, is always bigger than we really need. But the bigger the turkey the more leftovers, so that makes everyone happy.

TURKEY: When the turkey was cooled,it was completely sliced and piled on a platter. The stuffing and gravy had already been packaged separately and refrigerated. We made several “ready-to-serve” dinners, consisting of a couple of slices of turkey, a scoop of stuffing, a scoop each of the leftover veggies, and gravy on the turkey and mashed potatoes.

These were wrapped in foil and frozen. Anyone in a hurry could grab one, unwrap and microwave it.

The bones went in a jumbo plastic bag and were frozen to make soup at a later date. The platter of turkey slices was covered with plastic wrap and refrigerated.

Boxing Day in our family is“no cook”day, except for Dad’s special breakfast - bacon and egg sandwiches on toasted whole wheat Kaiser buns.Something he’d made for the kids, as a special treat,since they were little.We spend most of the day going for walks and playing board games.There’s usually a bag of multi-grain rolls on the counter. If anyone gets hungry he stuffs a roll with leftover cold turkey, cheese slice, tomato slice or pickle and munches while tossing the dice.

Sometime during the day, someone will fix a plate of raw vegetables and dip.These will get passed around while slamming down Dominos. (Sometimes the Dominos get sticky.) Later, someone will make a batch of hot spiced cider or hot chocolate.

The main cook is happy - she hasn’t touched a pot or a stirring spoon all day.

TURKEY LEFTOVERS: One of the best things about turkey is the leftovers. It is so versatile and can be mixed with almost anything, so you can eat it for a week and not eat the same thing twice.

Here are some of our favourites, all with few ingredients and very little time in the kitchen.

TURKEY POT PIE: 1 can Cream of Chicken soup (look for the half-fat variety) 2 cups chopped fresh veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, peppers) or thawed frozen veggies.

1 cup diced cooked turkey ½ cup milk 1 egg 1 cup Bisquick Preheat oven to 400. Combine soup, veggies and turkey in a casserole dish.

Blend milk, egg and Bisquick in a bowl and spoon over turkey mixture.Bake 30 minutes or until browned.Serves 4 with a salad, 3 without or 2 hungry teens.

CHRISTMAS BURRITO: 2 cups chopped leftover turkey 1 cup leftover cranberry sauce, divided 1 ½ cups leftover stuffing, heated ½ cup leftover gravy ½ cup thinly sliced red & green pepper 4 tortillas or sandwich wraps 2 tbsp butter Mix together half the cranberry sauce and gravy. Toss with turkey to moisten. Heat wraps in microwave for 10 seconds to make handling easier.

Divide stuffing between four wraps.

Then pile on turkey mixture. Lay sliced peppers on top.Roll bottom of wrap up over filling, tuck in both ends and roll up tightly.

Heat butter in large fry pan. Lay wraps seam side down and brown for a few minutes, turning once. Or if you have a sandwich grill, heat on the hot grill for about 5 minutes. Put on plates and slice in two crosswise. Heat rest of cranberry sauce and pour over hot wraps. Serve with a salad.

HELEN’S TIPS: Salads are easy to prepare in advance if stored right.

When I get a new head of lettuce the outside leaves are pulled off, washed and spread out on paper towels. The towels are then rolled up tightly and put in a plastic bag. Used bread bags are great for this. These leaves are used for sandwiches and are still crisp up to a week later. The rest of the head of lettuce gets chopped up with a special plastic lettuce knife or torn by hand.

This is washed and dried in a salad spinner and stored in plastic bags for up to a week.

We never barbecue just two of anything. It’s always four or more chicken breasts or pork chops. The extras go in the freezer for another day. They can be used for casseroles or teamed with salads and steamed vegetables.

Any leftover turkey can be frozen and pulled out a month later when Christmas is just a fond memory.

TURKEY SHEPHERD’S PIE WITH SWEET POTATO: 2 medium sweet potatoes 1 tbsp butter nutmeg Bake or boil sweet potatoes & mash with butter & nutmeg. Set aside.

2 cups chopped leftover turkey 1 cup leftover vegetables or frozen mixed vegetables, thawed 1 cup turkey gravy ½ tsp basil Mix together and put in casserole.

Top with mashed sweet potatoes,swirling to cover. Shake a little cinnamon sugar over the potatoes.Bake at 350 for 35 - 40 minutes.

My partner and I reconnected after almost a year with our friend Dave from Lake Country and his newly-adopted four-year-old German ShepherdBlue Heeler cross, Bailey.

Do you think about old friends, acquaintances, family members or people you miss in your life? I find myself wondering about what some of my friends are doing,where they are living and how they are. We live in a busy, fast moving world and it is hard to find the time to reconnect and have meaningful conversations with our old friends.

Over the past year or so, I realized I wanted to connect with many people but life kept happening, time slipped by and I didn't reach out. In April, I spoke with my cousin in Toronto recently only to find out that her family is relocating to London, England. I decided once and for all I wanted to know what my friends across Canada and other countries were doing.

Over the last few months, I created a list of people I wanted to reach out to. My approach is to pick up the phone and call. I prefer that to email,sending cards or using other technology to communicate because I find it more heartfelt and memorable.

To reconnect with people allows for opportunities to reunite and reflect on the past experiences. Reconnecting with one person or many people through your network brings you in contact with other people through your conversations. Once you ask, you’ll find out about other people you know in common.

bour’s apple orchard overlooking Okanagan Lake. We munched on fresh apples and caught up while the dogs ran free.

Reconnecting strengthens your friendships and provides opportunity for growth and future experiences.

I reconnected with a friend in Ontario whom I worked with more than 30 years ago. We worked as waitresses in Toronto while we were going to school. Both our lives have had many twists and turns, but after many years, we are still candid and straightforward with each other by listening, sharing and providing support.

Reconnecting with old friends gives you perspective and new information. You can teach and help each other through conversation. Friendship allows you to share experiences about family matters, work, advice or helping friends help other people.

Respect your friendships by being interested in other’s lives.I encourage you to make a list and set some time aside to make the connection with someone you have not spoken to for a while. Pick up the phone and call - someone has to make the first move.

ELVIA PICCO believes in making the effort to cultivate friendships. It takes time and care to be a good friend.She has recently connected for the first time with her cousin in Australia and wants to seek out her other cousins living in Buenos Aries.
