CSB ATHLETICS After returning to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in a decade last season, CSB looks to replicate that success in 2018-19 ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team put together its best season in nearly a decade in 2017-18, and now that the team has a taste of success – and the NCAA Tournament – it’s back for more in 2018-19.

CSB finished the year 22-5 overall and 16-2 and second in the MIAC last season, and earned its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2009. Head coach Mike Durbin won MIAC Coach of the Year honors after securing the 25th 20-win season of his career.

Saint Benedict started the year 15-1 overall and 9-0 in the MIAC – its best overall start since 2003-04 and best conference start since 2002-03. The team picked up a big road win at Bethel, coming from 14 points down to win by

seven on the road. CSB also beat Gustavus for the first time since 2016 to help secure its runner-up finish in the conference standings.

CSB earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, where it faced George Fox in Waverly, Iowa. The team’s season ended with a 79-63 loss to the Bruins.

This season, Saint Benedict has the unenviable task of replacing its two leading scorers in Niki Fokken and Chelsey Guetter. Both earned All-MIAC accolades, and Fokken earned a spot on the All-West Region Third Team after scoring the 1,000th point of her career in the NCAA Tournament.

Returning for the team, however, are junior Sidney Schiffler and sophomore Megan Thompson, who both earned All-MIAC Honorable Mention honors. Thompson who earned a spot on the All-MIAC First-Year Team - returns as the team’s leading scorer after averaging 8.1 points per game last season, and Schiffler finished her sophomore year fourth on the team with 7.2 points per game.

Alex Johnson returns for her junior season as the team’s leading rebounder after averaging 3.2 last season, and sophomore Maddie Schmitz is back after averaging 5.6 points and 3.0 rebounds per game as a first year.

CSB starts the 2018-19 campaign on the road at Minnesota-Morris before hosting Nebraska Wesleyan at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, and Simpson at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, as part of the Quinlivan & Hughes Tip-Off Tournament.

BASKETBALL 2018-19 The College of Saint Benedict basketball legacy continued to grow in 2017-18, and head coach Mike Durbin looks to match that success in his 33rd season at the helm in 2018-19.

After showing flashes of brilliance for the past several seasons, the 2017-18 squad put everything together, and wrapped up the season in a place it hadn’t been in nearly a decade – the NCAA Tournament. CSB finished the year second in the MIAC – its best finish since 2009-10.

CSB started the year 15-1 overall and 9-0 in the MIAC, marking its best overall start since 2003-04 and the best conference start since 2002-03. It wrapped up the season 22-5, marking the 25th 20-win season in Durbin’s tenure. He is one of five Division III women’s basketball coaches to record 25 or more 20-win seasons.

Saint Benedict recorded another milestone on Feb. 6 when it

made its way into the national polls for the first time since January 2011. CSB made its top25 debut at No. 24 on Feb. 6, and the team climbed as high as No. 21.

Durbin won MIAC Coach of the Year honors for the sixth time in his career. Durbin – who also won the honor in 1989, 1993, 1995, 1998 and 2010, has the most coach of the year awards for any women’s basketball coach in the MIAC. Seniors Niki Fokken and Chelsey Guetter both earned All-MIAC First Team honors to end the season, and Fokken also earned d3hoops.com All-West Region Third Team honors after surpassing the 1,000-point career milestone.

In 32 seasons, Durbin has coached 67 All-MIAC First Team selections, 48 honorable mention athletes, 14 players named to the All-MIAC Defensive Team and 14 all-first year team picks. Durbin enters his 33rd season at CSB with a 671-223 overall coaching record and a 667-201 mark with Saint Benedict.
