On behalf of the Cheltenham Silver Band & the Friends of Hatherley Park, I am delighted to welcome you all to Brass In The Park. This is the first ever concert in association with Friends of Hatherley Park & we are excited to re-connect with the local community in such a wonderful setting, as we haven’t been able for a while due to the covid pandemic.
This afternoon promises to be a celebration of brass band music with something for all the family. Cheltenham Silver Band continually strives to encourage the brass players of the future. We have 2 training bands for starter & intermediate players of all ages. All are welcome & you might like to have a go on one of our training instruments in the park this afternoon. For those budding percussionists amongst you we have instruments for you to try as well. See if you can blow a note or bash a rhythm!
Our thanks to the Friends Of Hatherley Park for helping us put on today’s concert which we hope will become an annual event. A special thankyou to Adena Cahill for traveling to be with us today & leading the singing in the finale. Our thanks also to the sponsors today, without whom this wouldn't have been possible. Lastly thankyou to you, the audience for coming to support the event. Next years “Brass in the Park” will hopefully be in June so please keep a look out for the date & invite your friends along. We are very proud to be part of the Cheltenham community, please continue to support us. Now, please sit back, enjoy your picnic, have your face painted, listen to the band & relax. I look forward to joining in & hearing you sing during the finale.
Michael Childs CSB ChairmanCheltenham Silver Band (CSB) is 86 years old, forming in 1937 as the work’s band of the Aircraft Components Limited (which later became a part of Dowty Equipment Ltd) & becoming the independent Cheltenham Spa Silver band in 1946. Cheltenham Silver Band as it is known now, is a registered charity entirely run by volunteers dedicated to the following primary aims:
Making music to entertain the Cheltenham area community;
Teaching the skill of playing a musical instrument to any person within that community who wishes to learn, without regard to age, gender, background, or any other factor.
To specifically target teaching children to play without any cost to their family, to give them a lifelong skill & access to peer support throughout their lives.
To support the community wherever possible, for example at civic events such as Remembrance or local charity fundraising. CSB perform at a variety of engagements each year, with audiences of up to several thousand people. Events range from ‘bands in the park’ concerts at Cheltenham, Stroud & Evesham, to Christmas concerts & Cheltenham Remembrance Day, the largest commemorative event in Gloucestershire. In addition, the Band runs outreach projects in local schools, running music workshops at no cost for up to 60 children at a time.
The Band has 3 ensembles that can cater for any size event: A beginner band for those who want to learn how to play a brass instrument; the Training band, consisting primarily of younger players, for school/church fetes; & the Main band, made up from around 30 musicians for our major concerts & contests. Players from the three bands combine for larger civic events such as the Remembrance parade & the annual opening of the Lido open air swimming pool, forming a combined band of 40-50 players.

I started playing brass back in 1975 & started on a Eb Tenor Horn – I joined Cheltenham Silver band in 1976 as second horn & was asked to play solo horn for a contest, which was 2 weeks after joining. I have had the pleasure playing for numerous bands including Swindon Pegasus, Coleford Town Band, Forest of Dean Brass, Lydney Town band, Flowers, Marshfield Town band & Tewkesbury Town Band.
I met Juliet (my wife) whilst playing at Coleford Town Band. I had retired from playing in the late 1990’s, until my youngest daughter had the bright idea that she would like to learn brass & started playing the tenor horn. She joined Cheltenham Silver Band in 2007, dragging me along to help, & thus was reunited with CSB. I started to compose & arranged music for the band, & you will hear a couple of them in today’ s programme.
The band started to look for a new Musical Director after the Covid pandemic, & I was delighted to be offered the opportunity. This is my first appointment as a Musical Director & have enjoyed my first year with this very friendly & motivated group of fine players. I am thrilled to be here at this inaugural Brass in the Park concert in Hatherley Park & hope you enjoy our performance together with your picnics.
Be ready to get patriotic & singalong to some classic Proms songs & wave some flags.
