A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPALS

Dear Friends and Families,

It is our privilege to welcome you to the 2024-2025 performance season at California School of the Arts –San Gabriel Valley (CSArts-SGV)! We are delighted to have you join us for our eighth season of showstopping performances, concerts, events, and more, all showcasing the tireless work and dedication of our exceptionally talented students and faculty.

The inspiring devotion and passion of our CSArts-SGV community has not gone unnoticed. Our school is currently ranked the #1 Best Charter High School in California, the #3 Best Public High School in Los Angeles County, and the #4 Best High School for the Arts in America by Niche. CSArts-SGV also holds the title of Best Charter School in the San Gabriel Valley by Pasadena Star-News, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, and Whittier Daily News

We could not be more proud of the many successes of our students, teachers, and staff, and we are thrilled to see what else we can all accomplish together as a CSArts-SGV family this school year. It is our first year together as joint principals, and there are so many other firsts on this season’s horizon that we are excited to be a part of, including welcoming our very first group of sixth grade students to CSArts-SGV!

Sincerely,

Of course, all of these incredible accomplishments could not be achieved without the support of our community. We would like to express our gratitude to our 2024-2025 Season Sponsors, Edison International and Max H. Gluck Foundation, as well as to our Board of Trustees, Foundation Board of Directors, President’s Circle, Encore, and Family Action Network members. Their continued support, leadership, and vision help to shape the lives of our students each and every day. Additionally, we would like to express our appreciation to the Duarte Unified School District (DUSD), the DUSD Board of Education, and the City of Duarte Council Members, whose continued partnership is vital to the mission of CSArts-SGV.

Finally, we must honor our parents, alumni, administrators, faculty and staff, members of the local community, and most importantly, our student artists. Our students are the inspiration and driving force behind everything that we do.

We are thrilled to have you join us in celebrating another impressive performance season at CSArts-SGV. Sit back and enjoy as our students Shine Brightly!

WE PROVIDE AN UNPARALLELED ARTS AND ACADEMIC EDUCATION IN A CREATIVE, CHALLENGING, AND NURTURING ENVIRONMENT TO A DIVERSE GROUP OF STUDENTS WHO ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT THE ARTS, PREPARING THEM TO REACH THEIR HIGHEST POTENTIAL.

ACADEMICS +

Established in 2017, California School of the Arts – San Gabriel Valley (CSArts-SGV) offers a dynamic school culture that enables students to flourish as artists and scholars. The school currently serves a diverse student body of approximately 1,200 students in grades 6-12. Students in grades 6-8 receive their academic instruction through the Duarte Unified School District (DUSD) and their arts classes through the CSArts-SGV conservatory program. Beginning in grade 9, students attend classes full-time on the CSArts-SGV campus.

In addition to offering a challenging college-preparatory academic program that produces high-achieving, motivated scholars, CSArts-SGV provides aspiring young artists with the opportunity to refine their skills and flourish in one of 11 arts conservatories. Each year, students participate in more than 60 concerts, recitals, staged performances, and exhibitions at a variety of venues, providing students with the unique experience of entertaining and inspiring hundreds of audience members.

CSArts-SGV is a donation-dependent public charter school; no student is offered or denied admission based on financial capacity. The school’s rigorous academic education coupled with advanced arts training impacts many students, molding creative thinkers, leaders, artists, innovators, and entrepreneurs.

Director's note

Into the Woods has lived in my imagination for as long as I can remember. Since high school, I’ve been captivated by its intricate storytelling, unforgettable score, and the way it weaves together humor, heartbreak, and deep moral lessons. Directing this show has been a longtime dream, and this production has given me the chance to explore its depths in a fresh and exciting way.

Tim Burton’s work has been another lifelong love of mine, shaping my artistic sensibilities with its whimsical darkness and distinct visual storytelling. His films and art create worlds that are both haunting and beautiful, quirky yet profound. This production is a fusion of those inspirations—an Into the Woods like no other, yet one that remains true to the soul of Sondheim and Lapine’s masterpiece.

I have been incredibly fortunate to work with a cast and creative team who have embraced this vision wholeheartedly, bringing their own passion, talent, and ingenuity to every rehearsal and production meeting. Their dedication has made this process not just a production, but a true artistic adventure—one that has been joyful, surprising, and deeply fulfilling.

At its core, Into the Woods reminds us that wishes have consequences, that we must take responsibility for our actions, and that even in the darkest of times, we are not alone. I hope this production makes you laugh, reflect, and perhaps see these timeless stories in a new light.

Thank you for joining us on this journey. Enjoy the show!

A Note from the Conservatory Director & Producer

Hey there, magical theater lovers!

Thank you so much for joining us on this wild and wonderful journey Into the Woods! This show has been a dream of mine for ages, and I’ve finally found the right group of students to take on this epic challenge.

First up, a huge shoutout to Haley Rubin— our fearless director and my partner in crime! Your passion, creativity, and unwavering dedication to this show, our students, and the conservatory blow me away. You inspire me every day, and I’m so proud to work alongside you.

To Cassandra Cavanaugh—your choreography is pure magic! You’ve added so much heart and movement to this show, and I’m constantly in awe of your creativity and talent. Bravo on another stunning job!

Noel Katz, where do I even start? This score is no joke, and you’ve tackled it with such skill and enthusiasm. Thank you for keeping us all musically in check and making sure we sound amazing!

Jessica Tan, our makeup and wig wizard— how do you do it?! Your endless hours of work have brought our wildest visions to life, and we couldn’t be more grateful.

A massive THANK YOU to our Production & Design pros: Adam Roy, Pomai Nakoa, Autumn Scott, Fiona Jessup, Emily Paalman, Nick Wass, and Grayson Basina.

And of course, our phenomenal student production team, led by the one and only Gio Huang—none of this would happen without your dedication and hard work. You are the glue that holds it all together!

Thank you for the outstanding group of musicians from the Instrumental Music Conservatory!

Thank you for taking this on! You are all aces in my book! Thanks Tyler McGeough for getting all together for us! I owe you pal.

To our incredible parent team—Carmi, Linda, Kim, and so many others—you have kept us fed, safe, and organized. The lobby work alone deserves a standing ovation! We truly couldn’t do this without you.

And finally, to this amazing cast—this show is a milestone moment for CSArts and IA, and I couldn’t be prouder. You challenge me, make me laugh, and remind me why I love this work so much. You are all extraordinary humans!

Last but never least, my family. Bianca, my rock—thank you for your constant love and support. I couldn’t dream of doing this without you. You are my Lorelai, and I am ALL IN! And to my boys, Jack and Tore— you are my greatest production of all.

With endless gratitude and love, Mr JOEY
