Last month, Chicken Smoothie implemented the popular suggestion to add an option to disable messages from your pound pets when they get added to a trade.
If you want to stop getting “A message from your pet,” make sure you tick the box in your trade settings that reads: “Don’t send me a notification PM when I’m trading away a pet from the pound.”
The suggestion to opt out of receiving this message was originally made by user Kida back in 2013, and it received overwhelming support from CS users since The automatic message that discouraged users from trading away their pound pets was a vestige from Chicken Smoothie’s early days. In 2009, site Admin Tess wrote in a post that “you don’t get punished for trading [pound pets] out, but it is ‘frowned upon’”
As the site grew and more pets joined the CS roster each month, more users began to play CS like a collectathon and ignore the “rule” to not trade pound pets it was more like a guideline anyway. The rule itself was removed from the pound page in 2013. Like Kida said in their original opening post, “one of the biggest points of this game is to trade,” so it’s natural that users would see it as an opportunity to obtain trade fodder.
We reached out to Kida to ask what they thought of having their suggestion finally be implemented. “I honestly resigned myself to thinking it wouldn’t have been implemented cuz it had been so long,” they said. “Great to see it finally happened.” Twelve years later, thanks to Kida’s suggestion, the community support it got, and the staff that implemented the update, Chickensmoothians can opt to trade off their pound pets guilt trip free!
Just like other recently implemented suggestions, such as adding identifying characters to UR item names and adding warning messages to trades that include pets adopted on December 18th, we love updates that make trading easier and safer!
CS FUN FACT
Did you know that the current “message from your pet” that users receive when one of their pound pets becomes involved in a trade is actually an edited version?
The original message read: "They were going to give me a lethal injection because nobody wanted me, but then you came and stroked me softly through the bars of my cage and took me home with you.”
Yikes! It was edited in 2010 to remove the lethal injection bit after users complained that it was excessively upsetting
POUND NEWS
The pound is experiencing technical difficulties. In February, Juliamon a frequent contributor to the “pound rarity odds” thread noticed that the pound had stopped releasing very rare pets. Simon confirmed that “because they were being given away too quickly,” the pound had run out of very rare pets!
The issue is being addressed by adjusting the pound’s rarity distribution to release a reduced number of rare+ pets in proportion to others, and also by temporarily halting the release of any very rare pets through the pound. By the end of March, Simon confirmed that “we are about halfway to the point where [CS staff] can start releasing VR pets [in the pound] again.”

STAFF CHANGES
It’s an exciting time on Chicken Smoothie as we welcome seven new Official CS Artists! dwarjam, Pyromaniacal, Susiron, Spacekkng, UnluckyStar, and Firielle have already treated us to many of their spectacular pet and item designs since they started participating as Guest Artists back in December. Additionally, DoctorDraca created many beloved pet designs between 2013 and 2017 before retiring from their position as Admin Assistant in 2017; it’s lovely to see them return to CS staff as an Official Artist We can hardly wait to see what the whole team of skilled CS artists have in store for us!
On the flip side, we’d like to say goodbye to Concept as they retire from their Official Artist position We hope we continue to occasionally see their pet designs as they continue to contribute to CS as a Guest Artist In the meantime, members of CSN staff have picked their favorite Concept pets to celebrate the art they’ve created for Chicken Smoothie so far!

In other news, the Daily tips/announcements banner atop the forum started rotating a new UMA and Closed Species promotion thread, which will be a wonderful way to discover many of the usermade adoptables on Chicken Smoothie! If you like to collect adoptable pagedolls and pixel pets and sometimes send them off on quests or adventures, you’ll definitely want to check the thread out.
A handful of users have already posted to the thread to promote their adorable creatures. It’s a delight to see these artists pursue UMA projects out of sheer passion and sprout communities dedicated to collecting and loving little guys!

One of the UMAs advertised on the new thread are Orb Cats a classic UMA created by Quillington in the Chicken Smoothie forums over 10 years ago! Orb Cats are magical pixel cats that live in your computer When they were originally created in July of 2014 they were wildly popular.
To celebrate Orb Cats’ anniversary last year, user Konata. brought old members of the community together to create new Orb Cats. We reached out to ask what sparked them to bring Orb Cats back and what it was like to get the gang back together.
When Konata. returned to CS two summers ago, they put their Orb Cat, Valentine, in their signature.
“I started getting PMs from users, asking if it really was an Orb Cat in my signature. Turns out, these people were the same friends I would chat with on the Orb Cat Fanclubs!!”
As Konata. got in touch with old friends, they joked about honoring the UMA’s 10-year anniversary with a brand-new Orb Cats litter “To my surprise, everyone I messaged was down!”

Returning artists include Wyverncult, roamerbird, redlitt, Echos, Sealipup, Prince Apollyon, and FlaireMoon ~Ebay~, all of whom were part of the community back in 2014. MorbidMonster also recently joined the artist team. “Without them, none of this would’ve been possible,” Konata said, “and I’m forever grateful that we could meet again this way :)”

TRENDING: COOL CARS & BANANAPOCALYPSE!
The Objects/Abstract/Other Oekaki board has received quite a bit of interest recently as a couple of art trends set off there these past weeks
First, artist and car enthusiast, flooxii, began drawing and posting several oekaki of classic motor vehicles like the pictured F40 Ferrari. “I got inspired to draw them because cars have been a hyperfixation of mine for a while now,” she said.
Her cool cars gained traction and soon other users joined in on the fun by drawing their own classic cars flooxii said that seeing other users post art of cars more often than ever in the oekaki has been a great experience and made her really happy:
“Everybody here, commenting and/or making art of [cars], have been really kind and uplifting.”
Additionally, qwertyo’s yearly April Fools joke, which this year involved drawing and posting several art pieces featuring bananas, also gained traction among many oekaki artists. The resulting bananapocalypse mirrored last year’s trend to draw carrots on the oekaki
Why bananas? “I wanted something I could draw quick and easy,” qwertyo said. “I had this idea a day before April Fools and so there was no time for me to stock up on saved oekakis to post”
qwertyo was glad to see other artists hop aboard the bananawagon, despite not communicating her plans to anyone in advance “If you drew something, thank you so much for contributing to the bananapocalypse!”

FEATURE ARTICLE: AN APRIL FOOLS RETROSPECTIVE
It’s March 2010 on Chicken Smoothie and users in the monthly discussion thread are anticipating the release of new pets at rollover. Some users chatter excitedly about the upcoming Easter holidays, hoping to see more bunnies up for adoption A couple of people recall adopting cats from a box on the Dogs’ page for April Fools in 2009 wasn’t that funny?!
Rollover arrives and people excitedly flock to the Adopt page…only to find everything from the newborn pets to the site layout has been Nickified!
Things would go back to normal the next day, but this would mark the beginning of a longstanding tradition to look out for site-wide pranks on April Fools day on Chicken Smoothie! Except for 2018 and 2024, when April 1st fell on or next to Easter weekend, Chicken Smoothie would be turned topsy-turvy one time literally! for a day.
Join us in exploring the pranks that site staff have played on users through the years in this April Fools day retrospective!
2011
In 2011, Chicken Smoothie celebrated cluck like a chicken day by assigning all users silly avatars of various CS pets! Oh, and also by replacing certain words and phrases in posts with different words via word filter, so that, for example, when users tried to post about “April Fools day” or “avatars,” their posts would replace the phrases with “cluck like a chicken day” and “socks” respectively This generated hilarious confusion as users tried to discuss “pets” but ended up talking about “fish sticks” instead!
It was well-known that Tess was a big fan of squids, but we did not expect for every single newborn in April 2012 to be a cephalopod! For a day, Chicken Smoothie was rebranded into “Squiddy Smoothie, ” complete with a new site layout (users can still choose CSSquiddy as a board style in their board preferences today) The word and phrase switcheroo on forum posts was squid-themed; for example, “trade” would appear as “squiddy exchange” and “April Fools” as “national wave your tentacles day.” Users’ avatars were also replaced with squids!
Many users wished that the adopted squids wouldn’t turn back into regular pets since they were so cute While the squids adopted on April 1st did turn back into dogs, cats, and other of the regularly released CS adopts, Tess released several squid pets to celebrate CS’s birthday later in the month!
2013
2013 brought back the silly-face avatars of CS pets across the site, and played another funny word switcheroo prank on forum users The word “pet” changed to “cupcake” and “April Fools” changed to “Nicolas Cage”.
Additionally, users posting about how cute or funny their new “avatars” were would appear to be complimenting their “noses!” The switcheroo with the funniest results may have been users asking to “trade” appeared to be asking others to “dance” for the day.
On April 1, 2024, one of the monthly litters teased users by showing a lion newborn on the adopts page but turning into kittens as soon as they were adopted! As users took to the Discussion Thread to express their delight or dismay, however, instead of “lions,” all they could talk about were “noodles.” Thus began the usual April Fools shenanigans on Chicken Smoothie

2015
The prank on April Fools 2015 saw Chicken Smoothie turn into Furnipets! Multiple pet designs were moved into line art of cute furniture items like lamps, cushions, couches, wall-mounted fish, and rocking horses the UR banana even turned into a banana phone!
The word filter on the forums turned “April Fools” into “National Furniture Appreciation Day.” Words like “store pets,” “items,” and “chicken” changed into household fixtures like “chandeliers,” “tableware,” and “pillows.” “Tess” and “Nick” switched into “Master Upholsterer” and “Master Carpenter,” respectively “Thread” became “house ” To top it all off, other staff members got royalty titles and acted as though they really were royalty on the forums!
April 1, 2016, launched the Chicken Revolution! Chicken Smoothie became Chicken World: users’ avatars were changed into chicken versions of various CS pets; many dogs, horses, ponies, and cats were suddenly covered by a giant eggshell that left only their legs and tails visible and was later released as a dressup item; and certain pets transformed into rowdy chickens!
The word switcheroo on the forums was in full swing, changing “April Fools” into “Chicken Revolution,” “staff” into “chicken servants,” and adding “glorious chicken” before every single mention of the word “eggs.”
CS staff for their part had their roles changed into “egg layers,” “coop sweepers,” or “egg warmers,” and they all wrote their signatures and posts using upside-down text!

2017
In 2017, Chicken Smoothie turned Grayscale as Totoro, the site’s cockatiel mascot, took over! “Wonderful” Totoro locked Tess up and painted the site “gorgeous” gray just like her beautiful plumage and continued to paint pets across the site in grayscale throughout the day
Tess urged users to fight Totoro’s Takeover and return color to CS. Users could side with Tess and fight for “Team Color” by dressing up their gray pets with colorful
paint items, or they could side with Totoro and fight for “Team Gray” by making purely grayscale dressups Totoro also tried to sway users toward Team Gray by posting on the forums.
If you want to get an idea of what pets looked like when Tororo took over, you can open a pet’s image in its own tab or window and add "&gs" to the url.
In the end, color was brought back to CS. It turned out Totoro had thrown a tantrum, turning everything on CS gray because she was hangry!
2019
Happy Hair Stylin’ Day! In April of 2019, Totoro opened up Smoothie Salon and began to style pets’ hairdos across the site! Pets wore different snazzy hairdos depending on their species but in a seemingly random color
Though the word switcheroo was mild this year, “avatar” turned into ”hairstyle inspo pic.” This was rendered extra funny because users’ avatars also changed to the silly-faced doggy avatars from years past, but this time with the fun addition of a very curly wig
The hairstyles disappeared from pets after the event, but they were released as an item pack soon after (and it’s still available for free in the “Special
Offers” section of the store today!)
The surprise hair wigs will automatically convert to fit adult: dogs, cats, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, chickens, lions, horses, zebras, ponies,andbutterflywolves!

2020
On April 1, 2020, Chicken Smoothie officially abbreviated the site name to Chicken Smooth...for a day! The site made this change apparent with a brand new site banner boasting smoothed versions of site mascots Avian and Totoro, as well as a smoother header font. A post on the site news proclaimed, “Time to embrace THE SMOOOOOTH”
This year broke CS’s tradition to prank users by applying word filters to the forums and switching words and phrases around. While the chaos that sprung from the silly switcheroo was fun for many users, it could also be frustrating and make the site inaccessible for others.
In any case, besides the release of a hilarious plucked and very smooth chicken along with some sphinx cats and a jar of smooth peanut butter many old pets on the site shed their fluff and turned smooth and glossy for the day!
April 2021 turned Chicken Smoothie topsy-turvy literally! The site’s banner was turned upside down together with the navigation bar, making moving around the site a little bit challenging Furthermore, certain pets began to flip on their heads as the day progressed! Though all pets went back to standing right side up, you can still flip them back on their heads by opening a pet’s image in its own tab or window and adding "&vf" to the end of its URL
2022
April 1, 2022 brought another hair-raising prank to Chicken Smoothie, this time by modifying random pets’ facial hair! Many pets gained attractive mustaches and/or bushy eyebrows. Avian and Totoro themselves grew some spectacular facial hair shown off on the site banner!
After pets went back to normal the next day, the variety of mustache, eyebrow, and beard items were added to the Special Events page for a limited time so users could grab and use them to keep their pets looking dapper
Similarly to the year prior, on April Fools 2023, pets changed throughout the day as more were infected with the googly eye epidemic! And likewise, after the pets returned to normal, staff released the googly eye items on the Special Events Page for a limited time.
“We have no pranks to worry about that would impact forum accessibility this year, however we do have a couple of silly gifts for you on [the] Special Events Page!”
shenanigans besides the release of traditional April Fools pets and items, Chicken Smoothie users quickly discovered some mischief afoot! Among a pack of funny eye, mouth, and eyebrow items users received three “Suspicious Hats”

AN INTERVIEW WITH: ICESCAPE
WHO IS ICESCAPE?
Icescape is a Chicken Smoothie user who joined the site in 2012. In 2020, they began a thread archiving hundreds of pet images from that year’s April Fools prank, when many CS pets lost their fuzz and turned shiny and smooth. Afterward, they created archives for past years’ pranks, documenting CS April Fools shenanigans through the years These archives were instrumental to writing our April Fools Retrospective Feature Article, so we reached out for an interview to find out a bit more about their creation and the user behind them!
What sort of work went into creating the April Fool’s Archive threads? Was it tough to source so many old images?
The work involved varied greatly between which archive was being created. For the one I started with, 2020, I was online that day and went through the archives page by page and grabbed them all myself!
For the older threads I made after that I searched the monthly threads which I linked as sources on the bottom of the first post on each thread. For the 2017’s Greyscale, I also found out a few from the dressup challenges. Greyed out pets only had “&gs” added to the end of their urls, so as long as which pet changed was known, it could be recreated
There’s probably other methods I used that I do not remember since it’s been some years now. But everything was done by hand!
In 2023 you mentioned nearly retiring from making a new April Fools Archive thread because it became impossible to archive all the affected pets. Can you expand a bit on this? What made the earlier CS April Fools pranks easier to archive than those in more recent years?
So the more pets on the site, the more that needed looked through to see if they changed or not. And if changes happen throughout the day, then a section may have already been checked and the change gets missed due to that
All of the work is done manually, so it takes too long to go through all the archives pages, grab all the relevant links, and paste them somewhere to be able to go through the archives multiple times. And even then you’re not guaranteed to grab them all.
AN INTERVIEW WITH ICESCAPE, CONTINUED
In addition to the physical aspects, there are also the mental aspects As more pets existed, the types of changes that affected the pets became different. This can be seen with the earlier years having more unique/custom artwork for the changed pets.
Starting with 2016, the pets started getting more blanket effects, with most of the changes just having an egg cover the pet and with only some pets getting the unique chicken lines. Moving on to the prank for 2021, [all] the pets turned upside down (which I didn’t personally find all that interesting and it wasn’t the nicest on the eyes).
Then with the googly eyes for 2023, each species got different eyes, but any pet of the same species looked the same. So there wasn’t really any reason to collect the images [of every individual pet] because you could already predict what they would look like anyway! All of these factors made archiving not worth the stress for me.
In the end, you did end up collecting some images of 2023 pets with googly eyes, which I personally really appreciate—we used them in the feature article! What ultimately motivated you to create that 2023 archive post?
I mean, despite my thoughts about collecting all of the images, there wasn’t really a reason not to collect an image for each species?
It was a compromise that was very reasonable and easy to do!
What are some of your favorite pets on CS?
Ever since joining the site I’ve always loved the Malk Foxes, which I eventually collected all of them. I also love the store Forest Guardians and these few pets [pictured].
AN INTERVIEW WITH ICESCAPE, CONTINUED
You’ve been a member since 2012, what captivated you about the site that has kept you returning to it?
Honestly, probably the simple fact of here’s these cute colorful pixels pets that you don’t have to spend money to have. Chicken Smoothie’s pets are just really pleasing to look at and the site itself is friendly to all ages and easy to navigate. I’m glad the site hasn’t had any entire UI overhalls like other sites that just make more and more users unhappy
Do you play on other pet sites besides CS? What other hobbies do you engage in?
I don’t play any other pet collecting sites, but I do like collecting a few things in real life when I’m able to. I also have character designs and a community that some of those designs are a part of that I now, as of very recently, work as an archivist for! A few other hobbies include gaming and photography.
