Message from the Basileus Happy New Year!

I hope you enjoyed festive times over the holidays and are planning some fun adventures in 2014. As I reflect on 2013, I appreciate all the wonderful programs and fun we’ve shared as members of Zeta Upsilon Omega Chapter. We really have an awesome chapter!

Black Family Patti Razor wanted to thank the chapter for their

Health Committee

donations of coupons to military troops overseas.

The auxiliary sent a total of 20,000 coupons to Italy in December.

Patti is no longer the president of the group but is still handling the coupon project. Please be reminded that the chapter has discontinued the overseas coupons project but sorors may still

donate coupons individually to the AMVET post.

Emerging Young Leaders EYL Orientation EYL Orientation was held on Thursday December 12th from 6 p.m.7:30 p.m. at the Child’s Park YMCA. A very special Thank You to Sorors who came to support the EYL Program and to meet the girls and their parents.

EYL Service Projects Keeping with the tradition of providing the girls with community service opportunities, the EYL’ers participated in the Neighbor to Neighbor Program Toybox Event at the Child’s Park YMCA on Saturday December 21, 2013.

Over 25 girls ( both present and EYL Alumni) participated in this worthwhile event. Thank you Soror Deborah for keeping us on your volunteer list.

EYL Retreat The EYL Annual Retreat will take place on Saturday January 11, 2014 from 3:00pm-7:00pm at the Childs Park YMCA. A special thank you to Soror Nakena and Soror Jasmine Clark for once again offering to do engaging workshops for the girls. Sorors if you have a workshop topic or are interested in conducting a retreat activity please contact Soror Lisa.

Upcoming Events EYL Black History Month Presentation presented in partnership with the Education Committee. Please stay tuned for more information and dates that will be forthcoming.

EYL Social Media Etiquette Workshop on Thursday January 16th at the Childs Park YMCA. EYL’ers Served to Date: 56 young ladies. Within those 56 ladies we have had girls who have gone on to be Student Body Presidents, Class Presidents, Honor Roll, Principals List, Accepted into Programs, etc.

Sorors, as you can see from the above mentioned activities, the Sorors on the EYL Committee have been very busy with the planning of our Sorority’s Signature Program. As we enter the final year of the EYL Program as the Signature Program, please make an effort to show your support to our EYL’ers and the EYL Committee who work so very hard to plan and present programming consistent with the high standards of Alpha Kappa Alpha.

In closing, Sorors our Committee has been approached by several EYL’ers and their parents regarding the status of the EYL Program at the conclusion of Soror Carolyn House Stewart’s administration.

This is an issue that our Chapter will address soon as to what are intentions are as far as continuing on with the Emerging Young Leaders Program.

Joint Founders Day Celebration Sorors, Local Tampa Bay Chapters from Bradenton/Sarasota, Clearwater, Lakeland, Bartow, St. Petersburg and Tampa are uniting at 11 a.m. on Jan. 25 to observe the 106th anniversary of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. The luncheon celebration will be held at the Phylllis Marshall Center at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

The theme is "The Alpha Kappa Alpha Legacy: Honoring the Past, Embracing the Present, Stepping Boldly into the Future." Our 28th International President, Attorney Carolyn House Stewart, is the keynote speaker. In addition, our South Atlantic Regional Director, Soror Marsha Lewis Brown, will attend and participate on the program. Members who have served the organization for 25 or more years will also receive special recognition at the luncheon.

To culminate the observance, sorors are invited to attend a worship service at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26, at First Baptist of Lincoln Gardens, 4025 W. Palmetto in Tampa.

In the spirit of service to all mankind, all eight Chapters will join together and collect donations of new and gently used clothing, shoes and accessories. The items will be donated to Dress for Success--a local organization that helps women to enter the workforce.

ZUO members may participate in the service project by bringing one gently used or new business suit to the Jan. 11 Sorority Meeting at Suncoast Hospice Center. Chapters will participate in a group photo op at 3 p.m. on Jan. 12 at the Gamma Theta Omega Sorority House, 412 E 7th Ave in Tampa.

The attire: Dressy pink or green attire. No pants. Observance will include a Rededication Ceremony.

The registration deadline has been extended to Jan. 11. The cost is $50.
