ADVANCING THE CONCEPT JLG® Industries, in collaboration with Dana®, has developed an E-Axle drive system concept. First showcased at Bauma 2019, the E-Axle design received early interest from customers across Europe.

Today, we are looking to develop a demonstrator that showcases this technology to JLG rental channel and end-user customers to gather broader VOC to determine if JLG should move forward with this industry leading technology.

EFFICIENCY The E-Axle has been designed with efficiency in mind with specific attention to bearings, gear geometry and the lubrication system, enabling it to support high speed electric motors, while eliminating multi-plate brakes.

TECHNOLOGY JLG has been behind when it comes to oscillating axle control technology for nearly 20-years. Today, we lock our front and rear axles when a machine is elevated. Competitive manufacturers offer oscillating axle controls which provides greater adaptability to changing ground conditions.

4-Wheel drive and 4-wheel steer with automatic wheel alignment will make JLG booms better suited for use across a range of applications from rough terrain, to slab, to compact, urban sites, making JLG a leader in this area of machine design.

Our future axle design is compatible with standard category 2 Axle components and available in oscillating or non-oscillating configurations. Custom Axles allow for more personalized control over the wheels and steering, providing finer control of wheel speed and torque.

The E-Axle offers a simplified, intelligent drive system that supports JLG’s premium brand position.

HOW IT WORKS With the new E-Axle design comes Steer Angle Sensing that will enable software controlled 4 wheel coordinated steering to provide enhanced efficiency by optimizing the rear steer angle based on the front steer angle. Automatic steer mode transitions also improve. The crab steer feature made available with the E-Axle allows for maximum maneuverability to allow precise control of the front and rear wheels in opposing directions.

With the oscillating axle configuration, front and rear Axle rams may be used for side-to-side leveling up to 6 degrees, reducing or eliminating completely the need to crib machines to work on sloped terrain. This essentially allows us to offer a similar feature to QuickLevel Advanced on booms.

This sets us up to offer customers a three-tiered option when it comes to axles. Today’s offering would be baseline, E-Axle with QuikLevel Advanced mid-level and self-leveling premium.

SINGLE TECHNOLOGY; MULTI-LINE SOLUTION The original E-Axle drive system can be used in all-electric and electric drive booms and scissor lifts in the 20,000- to 30,000-lb. class. It’s modular design approach, including its unique center section can be easily adapted for us on heavier and wider boom and scissor lifts, as well as on smaller, lighter weight models. It can even be modified for use in engine and hydraulic drive models, and to support the higher speed of telehandlers, providing, a drive system technology advancement that spans the full range of JLG products

Each unit simply connects to the frame of the machine using a top mounted pin, making it a single step process, virtually eliminating today’s Axle station during assembly and simplifying the manufacturing process through reduced componentry and installation time. Center section can also be configured without a top mounted pin housing for bolting directly to the frame for cost conscious customers,

HOW DO WE ELIMINATE TWO CIRCUITS? The design has a unique center section that allows an electric motor to be mounted parallel to the axle and next to differential. The motor torque is sent to the wheels through simple spur gear reduction, a center differential and hub reducers.

REDUCED MAINTENANCE E-Axles are virtually maintenance free and have a simple design that not only reduces parts, but also required maintenance and wear and tear on exposed components.

The center mounting of a single, virtually maintenance free motor per Axle verses today’s mounting of the individual motor controllers in the steering knuckles, provides protection of the motor by the side plates of the machine, reducing exposure to the elements making them less prone to damage and mud build-up.

Because the motor is center mounted, high power electrical cables are no longer needed near the drive knuckles where they were exposed to the elements and required to move and flex as the machine is steered. In the new E-Axle design, these electrical cables are well protected near the motor and almost static during steering for reduced wear and tear.
