When Faced With a Mountain…
N
ever in my life did I ever dream that God would give me such a mountain! The last two years, as I was called to give leadership to this ministry through its most challenging days, I confess to praying, “Lord, are You sure You meant for ME to do this?” There were many days when I felt totally inadequate for the mountain. The mountain was bigger than I had feared and it appeared to grow every day. Rather than feeling that I was making progress on my painful trek, it felt as if I was losing everything—the ministry, the campus, my self-confidence, even my faith was shaky from time to time. How did I know this was God’s mountain? How did I face this mountain and not quit? I’ve learned so far, that when faced with a mountain, we must… 1) TRUST GOD that it’s His mountain when He continues to provide and clarify vision, gives us the courage to climb, and shows us the path over the mountain as we follow Him. 2) STAY THE COURSE no matter what! No matter how dire things become, even if it looks like all is lost, if we stay the course, we will continue to receive a clear vision of what God wants us to do next. 3) PRAY to God, saying, “Lord, show me the way. I will follow You. Is this Your mountain for me to climb or are You guiding me to a new mountain, a better mountain that I would have missed if I hadn’t been redirected by You? I don’t
have to know how to get over this, but I do know that You already are clearing the road. Amen.” When the Lord revealed to me—through His Word, through other pastors, through needs in our community and the world—His vision, His plan for His ministry, I put my TRUST IN GOD and STAYED THE COURSE. When I felt lost and faced a roadblock, I would read God’s Word and PRAY. Sometimes it’s days, weeks, and even months before God reveals the way over each obstacle. But, even when discouraged, I just show up for work knowing He will show me the way. One way God continues to encourage me is through our Hope Center. Whenever I experience first-hand what God is doing in the lives of the poor and hungry in our community, I become emboldened, encouraged, and reinvigorated to push forward and climb harder and higher As we follow Him, we will discover that God’s way is always far better than anything we could ever dream or plan or imagine. I hear from many who are also facing mountains. You, too, may feel like you’ve been swallowed up in an avalanche of hardship. I truly understand and believe that is one reason God has allowed me to go through my mountain experience so I can walk with you and share with you what has helped me. The good news is…we’ll never climb alone and the climb is as thrilling as the view! Be willing to climb no matter what. That’s mountaintop living!
