ABOUT THE CIRCUS SNAPSHOT CARDS Between March and September 2019 we conducted 50 interviews with individuals working in or alongside the subsidised performance-based circus sector. The interviews focussed on current activities and practices, artform development initiatives, what the sector was good at and not so good at and what people felt a thriving sector might look like. The content of these interviews was distilled into these 29 cards. Each card is dedicated to a theme, idea, observation or challenge that emerged during the course of the interviews. In order to faithfully represent the breadth of opinion each theme is then illustrated with the real (but unaccredited) words of the interviewees. As the project developed the cards proved to be a useful and very flexible tool providing focus and detail where necessary but also helping to stimulate freeform conversation and discussion.
HOW TO USE THE SNAPSHOT CARDS In their original form the Snapshot Cards were printed and handed out as a pack to everyone who attended the conversation events. In sharing them here we have tried to enhance the impact the cards make by allowing you to choose your journey through them. The cards are not linear. They are a three-dimensional web of connected ideas, themes and issues. To guide you on your journey through them we have provided possible connections at the bottom of each card which will allow you to click through them in your own way.
