Sanju says sleep and smile
This is hard.What’s there to say that hasn’t already been said? If there’s one thing that I didn’t really do in high school, and a mistake that I wish no one else would make, it would to just be happy. That seems simple enough. But, for someone like me, who didn’t know how to create a healthy balance between school work, extra curriculars and time for fun, Sangamithra Sathian it took a while to figure out. News Editor As I speak from personal experience, the first step in attaining happiness is to know that it isn’t always the best idea to burden yourself with a schedule full of honors and advanced placement classes. (Sorry Dr. Plagman! He he.) During those times, sleep was something that didn’t exist in my vocabulary and I’m almost positive my grades kept their “exponential decline,” the harder I tried. Those times were hard. Everyone’s threshold is different and I think knowing yours is the best thing you can do for yourself. The correct path is the one that allows you to take maximum advantage of your potential, not someone else’s idea of what your potential is. The other thing I wish I had done more, is to simply smile more. A smile can say a million things about one’s character in one second. “Wear a smile, one size fits all.” This is something my grandmother used to tell me.
There was a time, perhaps it was the PSAT exam, that I remember thinking “Sanju, Karl Salamon is sitting next to you and he’s filling up those bubbles like a genius ginger machine.” And just like that, the miniscule amount of confidence that I did have was destroyed. What happened next was a once-in-a-lifetime sort of deal. I caught a pair of bored eyes gazing around the exam hall; they belonged to that Linn-Mar cheerleader who I had met through a friend before the exam, who I was sure had more than a pound makeup on her face and was legit more brown than I was. She flashed a smile and a thumbs up. This was all it took for me to decide that I had to ignore the successful scratching of Karl’s pencil, and focus on the overcrowded page of words. That smile was all it took for me to think that success was in my hands and my attitude. There were also times that I wish someone had smiled at me and told me that everything is going to be okay. So the next time one of your friends tells you about how difficult Scherrman’s history exam was, maybe you can rant with them about how you’re going to fail at life too! More than lessons for high schools, for me, they were lessons for life. I’m sure no one had an epiphany while reading this, but I do hope I’ve said something worthwhile. (For those who know my dad, this is funny.) Because (insert Indian accent here) “Sanjumaaaa, you know the true smart people in this world are not the ones that learn from their mistakes, but the people that learn from other’s mistakes.”

There is no way not to be cliché about this, but I absolutely cannot fathom Alyssa Christian the notion Editor-in-chief that I am graduating in a few short days. After writing and rewriting this senior column for the past week, I realize I am at a loss for words. Being a Warrior is something I always felt ready for, and feel nowhere near ready to leave behind. These last four years have taught me a lot about life, friendships, and myself and I will forever be in awe of the overwhelming immensity of lessons Washington High School has the capacity to teach. However, if there is anything that being a Warrior has fully taught me, it is that we all are capable of our own success, but we must discover this success through the forging of our own paths. We must all strive to pave the road to the realization of our own unique potential. We do not have to be alone in this. High school, like water, continually flows, allowing our paths to come together with some, diverge, and come together with others. It’s really funny in that way. There are always new people to meet, new opportunities to delve into, and
new relationships to explore. Every day we must be appreciative of the people who enter our lives and hold on to those we love; we must put their happiness on the same level as our own. If we forget to do this, like a flash, paths painfully diverge. We must realize that our own paths are not straight and narrow, and neither is anyone else’s. Mistakes and poor decisions will be made; this is an inevitability of life. However, if we can learn and grow away from our own mistakes and the mistakes of others, we mature into better individuals. There is unfortunately no way to change a regrettable past, but a brighter future can constantly be worked toward. If there’s anything else I learned, it is that time moves way too quickly and while being cognizant of our past and determined for our future, we must remain firmly planted and active in our present. Although this all may just seem like a bunch of words, this is what I have found to be the truth: we all must find our own direction, but none of us have to do it completely alone. If we maintain the relationships that fulfill us and work together towards the realization of our dreams, we will know true happiness. Forever and always, Warrior Nation. And a final piece of advice for all my ladies- if you’re wearing sandals and all of the stalls around the perimeter of the bathroom are occupied- you can wait. Not worth it.

Reading past senior columns, I saw that the seniors glorified the school, its Katie Nunemaker AP classes, and the Photo editor staff that works here at Wash, as they should, I mean why not when you go to a school this great? Going to class and sports practices has been the same all four years for me, not wanting to go, ending up going, and leaving on my way home faster than I knew it; and that is what made Wash so great. The fact that I could go, with my passive self, and be done before I knew it. I was not particularly thrilled the past few years to go to a 5:30 a.m. swimming practice; to only follow it by periods one through seven and this year, period eight. When I got there though, and as I was leaving I made friends, I found my second family in the swim team, I found where I fit in-working with photography
and journalism, and most of all, I grew up. Thanks to swimming and my new second family, I got to go to Lost Island and swim with my team, I got to compete and drop time, because of the work I put into it while not wanting to get anywhere near that cold, chlorinated water. Thanks to my classes I met new friends, realized what I was good at and found that history wasn’t exactly my thing. Thanks to those friends I met in swimming and classes, I was advised to join Yearbook where I found my true calling, and later told I should join Surveyor to take photos there too. With all those experiences, I had time to grow up, to become me and to get ready for the next huge chapter of my life. Though I had an extremely passive attitude through high school, I realized that it’s not only the classes, practices and people that mattered. It was also the experiences that I had because of them, and maybe, being passive wasn’t so bad after all.

97 problems, but high school ain’t one
Being the nerd I am, it’s not hard to believe that I was once in a book club…a Katharine Goodwin mother/ Business Manager daughter book club. But actually, it wasn’t as horrible as one would imagine. I laughed with my friends, found some new good reads, and learned that proper etiquette is waiting 10 seconds to answer a question. The last time we met was right before eighth grade graduation and we each got a book
called “97 Things to do Before You Finish High School.” Rearrange your room, try a different hairstyle, write a future letter to yourself, studying a piece of art, and start a campfire are some of the 49 out 97 things I’ve so far accomplished. And it’s not about finishing the entire list because obviously I am not going to finish the remaining 48 in a matter of days. What is important are the ones I have finished. I’m always going to remember riding my first horse in Colorado with my friends, or Lac D’Annecy in France, or writing a slightly embarrassing letter to Robert Pattinson (still waiting for his response…).

It’s the laughter, tears, and effort that went into these experiences and others that made high school special. Everyone’s time in high school is special to them for some reason or another. Mine was partly because I attempted to work my way through this ridiculous book and that lead me to new friends and memories. You don’t have to follow a book to embrace the gifts built into high school, but make it a point to branch out. Run for class office even if you don’t think you’ll win. Join a new club even if you don’t think you’ll like backpacking. Push boundaries and print the F-word in

the paper (Although I don’t know if I’d advise that again…). Actually use the library to check out books. Be close with one teacher who you can always talk with. Make those quick Starbucks runs during homeroom. Find a cause you’re passionate about and support it with all your heart. High school is what you make of it. You don’t have to have the book to come up with 97 things to do before you graduate, but make sure you do something with your time in high school. Make your time at Wash special because at your ten year reunion, you’ll be happy to have unique experiences to reminisce about.
