While the Great Ape Hunt of 1924 failed to uncover solid proof of the creatures, the legend of the Apemen did not die. Throughout the decades, there have been numerous sightings and encounters reported in the region surrounding Mt. St. Helens, most notably from locals and hikers. One particularly interesting case in 1964 saw two separate Portland groups report sightings of large, hairy creatures near Ape Canyon and the Lewis River, reinforcing the idea that the Apemen were not merely the figments of an overactive imagination.Fred Beck's involvement in these later events is a subject of continued discussion. In the 1964 article from the Longview Daily News, Beck's name reappears, as he is referenced by others who claim to have seen similar creatures on Mt. St. Helens.
