I’m LC, founder of GRLY Collective and I’d love to share with you why I have started our community of kind.

After watching my youngest sister struggle with bullying, self-image and esteem, anxiety and all the other emotions and situations that most teens are faced First up, a little about me. I am a devoted with, I wanted to help, not only her but wife, mama to a daughter and big sister babes everywhere navigate and move to a brother and two sisters. I’m an Aries through the many challenges faced during sun, Libra moon and Gemini rising. I love those transformative years. Be that, attracting more confidence, managing anxiety, a good nights sleep or anything else our babes are seeking. Each kit is made to order, set with intentions and sent with the highest of vibes. Our kits have been designed to take the overwhelm out of Self-Care practices and make it a wonderful experience for all babes.

In December 2018 we launched our first self-care subscription box “You Glow Girl. It was a gentle introduction into what we are about and what to expect in our kits with Citrine crystal as the inspiration. This year we have been struck with inspiration and have restructured how GRLY works. We took some time to think about how we could seriously help as many babes as we could, making it as easy as possible. After much brainstorming and a detailed and vivid dream delivered straight from the universe (#grateful), the GRLY team has put together Self-Care, Ritual, Combat and Attract kits. These kits combine all the tools we know and love (crystals, essential 8

FROM DEPRESSION TO INSPIRATION BY EMILY GOWOR A

s I boarded the plane to fly from Australia to Ireland on an all-expenses paid trip to share my story from stage, it hit me: I was living the life I had always dreamed of. At age 19, I never thought that life could be possible for me. I had dropped out of my Sociology & Philosophy degree at University a year earlier after realizing that an academic path wasn’t my calling in life. Even though I achieved a final grade of 96 percent in school, my heart just wasn’t in it. After putting my degree on hold, I fell into a deep state of depression. For eight long months, I felt lost. I didn’t feel like studying or socializing, and the idea of being in a relationship felt pointless. Several people in my life were telling me to get a job as a friend of mine was paying my bills at the time, but I felt too low to wrap my head around being employed: I barely wanted to get up in the morning let alone go to work. The days felt like a blur. Even my friendships and family began to lose their meaning. It didn’t seem to matter what happened, who I saw, or what I did in a day, being alive felt pointless.

On the inside, I was hurting and searching for my purpose. I’d had a hard time fitting in and making friends at school and a deep sense of worthlessness had caught up with me. Although I knew I loved to write and that I was interested in the world of self-help, I didn’t feel that I mattered and, ultimately, that it didn’t matter whether I lived or died. I wanted to believe that I had a destiny to fulfil on Earth, but I felt so insignificant on the inside that it felt like a stretch of my imagination to believe I deserved an amazing life. But then, one night, it changed – drastically. It was the middle of 2007 and I had hit rock-bottom, with no job, no money and no sense of direction for the future. I had hit a dead-end in my life: I didn’t know what to do or where to turn next. I arrived home at night, parked on the street and walked in the front door of my apartment, feeling numb. I dropped my keys onto the kitchen bench and laid down on a mattress on the lounge room floor. I lay there for twelve hours. I didn’t move, I didn’t eat, I didn’t talk to anyone, and I didn’t go to the bathroom. I was 19, bright and smart, and yet I felt like I didn’t have anything to live for. I just wanted the pain to end… and I considered ending my life. All I could think was, ‘I don’t care if my heart doesn’t ever beat again.’ And that’s when my life changed forever.

Even when I felt like I couldn’t go on anymore and that I was drowning in my depression, there was a part of me that knew that my life didn’t have to be this way. I didn’t really believe that we are put here on Earth to suffer. In fact, it was the opposite: I believed we are born with a purpose and the ability to thrive in the pursuit of it. Right then and there, I decided that I would do whatever it took to live an extraordinary life. I knew that even though I had been suffering for so long, that I didn’t really want to end it all: I wanted to live fully, with everything I had. I knew it would take work to change my life, but I didn’t care: I wanted IN. I was committed to fulfilling my purpose as an inspirational writer and speaker – a commitment that hasn’t changed in more than ten years.

I started to grow my business as a professional writer and within a year, I had landed the opportunity to edit the first manuscript of Dr. John Demartini’s best-selling book for Hay House, Inspired Destiny. The same year, I was offered the chance to write my first book with a publishing company in New Zealand and Italy and my dream of becoming an author came true when I was just 23 years old.

A CAREER REIMA

E

ver since I was a child, I loved learning. I was the academic of the family constantly with my head in the books. I was curious by what life would or could hold. I remember having countless conversations with teachers, family, friends and career advisors on what I could do post school. It was always that same conversation, what do you want to do with your life? Looking back now, I can reflect and think how could a seventeen year old girl know what she wanted from life, when I hadn’t experienced...anything.

36 Crush It Magazine

AGINED What did I know about life, careers or working? What I did know and felt was this innate pressure of having to become something. To be successful you have to become someone. Now looking back at that time, I wish I’d had the courage to say that I am going to become me. I am going to grow and develop through life, by trying new things, experiencing adventures and embracing the things that I love and enjoy most.

I was able to draw on the skills and knowledge I enjoyed most and have used that through my career to truly understand my passions. And as a small business owner today, I am driven by my passion of wanting to impact others in the community. I want to build relationships, create change and help people grow and develop mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

When I finished school, I had no idea what I wanted to do. But I applied for a Bachelor of Business. I got in and four years later came out of it with a business degree with honours. I wasn’t given a title or a profession as you do when you become a doctor or a lawyer. Rather I was given a set of skills and learning, which have morphed into the working life I have today.

It’s amazing because you’re not taught that at school. Rather we are given the generic academic learnings. We need to add our passions and interests to the mix. As much as the academic learning is profound, it is the heart and soul where our true passions, talents and unique spark lies.

37

After studying positive psychology frameworks, I have come to truly appreciate the idea that we need to embrace the “whole person when we think about our careers, work and life. Having spent much time with other business owners and traditional workers, I have come to learn some key points.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

38 Crush It Magazine

Never be afraid to embrace your personal passions and interests.

Learn to understand what is most important to you at any particular time. Knowing your core values helps drive your decisions and actions. Know, learn, develop and understand your greatest strengths. Don’t be afraid to seek change in your job or career. Understand how you want to feel in life and use that to keep motivation alive.

Following the above points will help you move forward in the direction that feels right at the time. Life is about embracing change and pivoting when the need arises. There is no bad experience, everything comes with learning and growth. Struggling with identity and passions is part of life and growing up. Unfortunately, it is a struggle that you will probably experience a few times in your life. No one is ever really sure of themself and what they want. Life is an experience. What I can tell you is that whatever you decide to do today will become a stepping stone to your greatness in the future. So choose to follow your dreams, values and what makes you happy today. I was recently reminded of how wrongly skewed the infamous question - what do you want to be when you grow up is. I asked my four year old daughter and she turned to me and simply replied with her name, Amber. I want to be Amber. It brought a tear to my eye because that is exactly what I want her to be. And I hope through my story and own passions that I can teach her and others to embrace who they truly are.

CAREER CONNO

The one thing you’ll need to get started and crush your career goals – your focused investment. – Part two, resume preparation series.

40 Crush It Magazine

If you’ve had the chance to read part one of Crush it Magazine’s first release, you would have seen the first of the Resume Preparation series where I shared three ways to learn about yourself and gave you my tips to help you explore career options. Check it out here if you missed it! Now that you know what career or job role you want to pursue it’s now time to move closer to crushing your goals by creating the most important career document you’ll need, YOUR RESUME! At all times during your career journey, keep your short and long term goals front of mind. The thing to remember is – in this modern world of work a variety of roles fade and new ones emerge so this may impact your career goals. But, as long as you’re motivated, willing to learn new skills and focused on accomplishing your goals, I believe you’re on the right path to having a fulfilling career.

OISSEUR Goals are things you put effort into and gives you direction. An effective way to crush your goals and remove feelings of overwhelm is by breaking down your larger goals and setting mini actionable steps. For example, a short-term goal could be starting at an entry level role or pursuing an internship but if you can relate

the opportunity to an industry of interest or even better your chosen career path (long-term goal) ‘your future self’ will thank you for it.

Let’ say for instance, your career goal is to become a Registered Nurse. By gaining experience at a Pharmacy or at an Age Care facility during your school years or after, this can develop your interpersonal ability used to deliver quality patient care and this will allow you to gain employability skills and valuable experience way before you become a Graduate Nurse. The entry-level role at a Pharmacist or working as a receptionist at an Age care home is an example of a mini actionable step that you can pursue

41

Starting your resume before you even write it! Therefore, with this similar approach in mind, it is exactly how I have designed starting your new professional resume. By breaking down each important step of the resume creation process it will help you to achieve a professional and impressive resume that sells yourself and experience perfectly. There are three ‘mini steps’ that are the most important part of the resume creation process and requires your focused investment before you even begin to write your resume. I call these ‘mini steps’ the tools and resources that are behind a winning resume. The steps are as follows:

Step 1 Gain knowledge about you!

Step 2 Know what role you want to pursue and WHY

Step 3 Gathering the Essential Resources.

Grab a pen and your notebook and let’s get into it!

42 Crush It Magazine

1. Gain Knowledge About You. Building knowledge about who you are, what skills you have and your strengths prior to writing your resume is first and foremost the best advice I can give you. Put simply, you’re the product you’re trying to sell, so make sure you’re well informed of all of your most appealing features! How do you gain knowledge about who you are, I hear you ask? Well, it’s not a simple answer and there are a range of ways to dig deep and find relevant insight about YOU! For example, using reflective questions such as what am I

brilliant at? Or, asking others that know you what they consider are your strengths? You can discover some new insight? It’s important to tailor your strengths to the role you’re applying for though. My tip with where to start researching would be ‘common interview questions’. These can serve as reflective questions for gathering content – so make sure you record your responses. In this article, I am going to share with you an actionable step that I use with students to help them gather valuable content about their strengths and skills.

Let’s dive straight into it! Mini Actionable Step 1 – Identify Your Email: skillsforyourcareer@gmail.com and Current Skills Using a Skills Tracker Worksheet. request your FREE Skills Tracker Worksheet. A Skills Tracker, otherwise known as a Skills Identification Worksheet, can vary but it simply is a worksheet containing skills, knowledge and experience that can be used across a range of industries. It is designed for individuals to rate each skill at a level that you believe you are at and it also allows for a supervisor or teacher to rate your skill level. It also aims to identify any skills that you would like to develop further via courses or via on the job training.

43

2. Know Your Career Goals And Know Why Your Goals Motivate You When it comes to starting your resume and commencing your job search journey, the first thing you’ll need to be focused and clear about is what role you want to pursue. Check out this article in CRUSH It Magazine’s Issue 1, if you still need some career clarity and want to explore some career options. My tip is if you need employment immediately look for roles that are aligned with your strengths, skills, work-related values or interests as this will help you land a role, more effectively.

QUESTIONS: 1. What will mean more to you than any other role? 2. Where do you want to work? 3. What do you want to be doing there?

44 Crush It Magazine

When you choose the industry you want to pursue ask yourself a few questions that will help you gain clarity on what’s important to you about this role? If you’re not sure about the responses to these questions then it may mean that you still need to do some more research about the industry and job duties.

EXAMPLE RESPONSES: 1. Being able to help people 2. Retail Fashion or Pharmacy 3. Serving customers

Then, once you take some time to reflect on these responses that are unique to you, ask yourself these two questions.

your pursuit…Remember your WHY and you will find a way to continue along your path and landing your ideal role.

- -

Now, by knowing exactly what role you want to pursue and why, you’ll have more direction and more importantly you’ll be able to effectively tailor your resume towards a specific sector and role – and potential employers will get a better idea of why you’re such a great fit for the position.

Why do you want that role? How will it change your situation?

You see, the power lies in the WHY! It is what motivates you. Motivation fuels persistence and when the going gets tough and setbacks make you feel disheartened on

3. Gather the Essential Resources. Your resume should be a well-researched, well-presented piece of work, it is a representation of you after all. It is important to collect everything you’ll need before starting to write your resume so that you’re clear about what to include or not to include in your resume.

and demonstrates to employers in the written form examples of your work ethic, abilities and important attributes (like teamwork!) before meeting you face to face. Stay tuned for the next editorial for ways to display them in your resume.

We’ve even developed a checklist to help Use some content from a range of documents you figure out what resources can be gathered that you can gathered from your education, and help you prepare for the resume creation employment or academic studies to develop process. areas of your resume. DELTA’S DIA Travel

Hey guys, Great to be back for the second issue! I’d like to share a little more about my travelling life. My family (mum, dad, and little bro Billy) and I have been travelling around Australia for the last three years! I am home schooled through distant Ed and my parents are photographers who make a living photographing holiday parks around Australia and New Zealand.

We have been to a lot of places except for the middle of the country but I’m sure one day we will visit Uluru although I’m not sure I’ll survive without the ocean. We were originally from Coffs Harbour in NSW so we have explored the east coast heaps and we love it but the Sunshine Coast in Queensland has a special place in our hearts with stunning beaches and a cool healthy vibe. Far North Queensland had incredible waterfalls and reefs not far off the beach. Billy and I were so stoked about the coconut palms and ate and drank coconuts for breakfast everyday.

ARIES The Northern Territory had some awesome culture and aboriginal rock art as well as Thermal Springs. Our favourite was Bitter Springs. We swam down with masks and explored the seagrass and logs that made it look like an underwater forest. Western Australia was wild and beautiful! It was really windy but the landscapes were stunning. Coral Bay would have to be my favourite place with so much sea life and the clearest water. Tasmania was awesome! It was the first time I had seen snow and the local produce was a definite highlight. We hiked many mountain tracks and came across so much wildlife along the way. The east coast of Tassie had some amazing beaches with super white sand and clear icy cold water.

We spent 6 weeks exploring the north and south islands of New Zealand. The mountains were incredible, nothing like anything in Australia and there were heaps of friendly seals all over the rocks on the beaches. My all-time favourite place I have been so far is Lady Elliot (an Island on the Great Barrier Reef). We stayed for seven days in a little eco cabin about two years ago and I can’t wait to go back in May this year. The beach was covered in white shells instead of sand and the water was crystal clear and quite warm

for that time of year. There were two places to snorkel, the drop off and the lagoon. In the lagoon, there was hundreds of turtles who were really curious and would come right up to you. There was also fish, starfish, pretty corals, octopus and clams. In the drop off we had one of the best experiences ever! We swam with about six manta rays! They were so beautiful, flying through the water and surrounding us curiously. There was buffet breakfast and dinner with really nice food and everyone who worked on the island were marine biologist so there was so much education.

We have had so much fun exploring the places we have been and we are excited for our future adventures, hopefully to overseas islands like Hawaii! Hope all you amazing people have a great day and go for an explore, even if it’s just in your town, there is always something new to see :)

OUR FAMILY TR Explore the Bellarine Peninsula An hour and a half away from Melbourne CBD is a coastal town that is begging to be explored and enjoyed by families. Ocean Grove is situated on the Bellarine Peninsula and is the ideal destination for a short term getaway or the beginning of a journey further west towards Torquay and to the start of the Great Ocean Road. For us, Ocean Grove is an ideal family destination. The beaches are ideal and our children love to splash around and have a go at boogie boarding. If you’re not into waves, never fear, the other coastal towns surrounding Ocean Grove means you have plenty of choice depending on your skill or comfort for sea swimming. Either way, the quintessential Australian Beach experience is at your doorstep along the Bellarine. Whether you like to swim, walk or just gaze upon the sea and listen to the crashing waves or water rippling to the sand, it is a sight like no other. A mindful experience for the whole family to enjoy and take in part of nature that we can all enjoy.

On our most recent visit, we stayed inland (as opposed to choosing something with ocean views) and found a picturesque spot at The Woods which is a private property with two cabins available for rent. These were set in an idyllic bush setting, yet gave us all the luxuries any family could want with a swimming pool, tennis courts and a communal camp kitchen for cooking meals if required. Whilst we only hired one cabin if you have Tweens or Teens hire both and the adults can have a cabin to themselves. The focus on nature is so apparent when you visit the Bellarine Peninsula. Phones were discarded for bikes or a tennis racket or a walk through the bush. The birds singing their morning songs awaken a spirit that encourages you outdoors and out in the open air. We let the days slowly trickle by enjoying endless hours at the beach only accepting the days end when the sun fades. For a divergence away from the water we took the short drive to Queenscliff and enjoyed fossicking in the many vintage and second hand shops before treating ourselves to a much deserved ice-cream. The Marina down by the water is another fabulous spot to check out and has an observation tower to enjoy. Another great town to check out is Point Lonsdale - a brilliant viewing point out of the bay from the lighthouse.

Still want more! If your penchant is to explore you will be delighted as further along the coast is Portarlington. What once was a sleepy fishing village is now bustling with life, and a ferry now operates from this port to Docklands making it so easy to visit. Be sure to check out Daniels Donut store when you visit!! If the adults need a treat, there are many wineries near by - our favourite being Jack Rabbit. It’s easy at Ocean Grove and surrounding villages to make time for family and enjoy the simple things and get back to classic fun. We hope this has inspired you to make a visit to the Bellarine Peninsula.

Sleep, Yoga + Moving Your Toosh Consider this. We were never designed to: • • • • • •

sit at desks and computers, detached from our bodies all day be scrunched into cars for our daily commute or go all day without walking more than a few hundred metres spend hours on the couch be so detached from the seasons that we barely notice winter is over until spring sales begin consume so much of other peoples’ lives and experiences via social media that we totally miss the beauty, majesty and uniqueness of our own life be regimented in an artificial timetable of to-do lists, appointments and work hours, where taking a moment to hear ourselves is drowned out by traffic, earphones and radio stations!

We should be free and out in nature! So we have to work on tuning out all the noise and tuning in to our own gut instincts, feelings and thoughts. We have to consciously find the calm.

Just breathe We spend our lives breathing, without ever having to think about it. But when we do tune into our breath and take notice of it, we instantly feel more calm. So I’d love you to stop for a moment and take one, deep, slow breath through your nose and down into your belly. Then exhale as slowly as you can, out through your nose. Repeat a few times. You’ll notice that you can go a little deeper each time and you might even notice that your belly rises a little. Your heart rate might slow down and you’ll feel more present in your body. This is something you can do anytime, especially when you’re feeling stressed out or worried about something. You can do it in the classroom, on the bus or lying in bed. Just breathe. If you feel like you need something else to distract you, look at a watch or clock and count five seconds in and five seconds out with your breathing. Simple but powerful.

Sleep Teens need at least nine hours sleep a night. But it takes more than your head hitting the pillow to have a good night’s sleep. You should wake feeling refreshed and ready for the day. How do you feel when you wake in the morning? Megan Dalla-Camina, author of Getting Real About Having It All, says: Sleep deprivation can cause a lack of motivation, moodiness, inability to cope with stress, reduced immunity, lack of concentration and memory problems, increased risk of accidents, major health problems like heart disease and, wait for it ladies—weight gain. Here are some tips to get a good night’s sleep: • Make sure your room is dark. • Turn off all electronic devices in your room—even the TV’s standby light can inhibit sleep. • Make sure your phone is off or at the very least on flight mode. • Get off your phone, computer and any other magical device an hour before bed time. This is crucial. Read a book (non-school related, so your brain can start to wind down), do some stretches, have a cup of restful herbal tea or journal instead.

65

#Yogaeverydamnday Amongst the stress that is placed on teenage girls, we often forget how important self-care and love is. It feels as though there are not enough hours in the day to complete the tasks required of us (study, exercise, socialising, sleep, work, family time, etc.) and we get overwhelmed and caught up. By simply spending a few minutes a day to relax, meditate, stretch, do yoga (I do three sun salutations) you can re-centre yourself and feel instantly calmer, thus working and just living in general more effectively and efficiently. ‑ Ruby 17, past student, sharing what works for her You might not be into yoga or you might not have tried it. That’s okay. But find something that you like to do to move your body. Not being into sports is kind of a cop-out these days, when you have so many more options than just joining the local netball team. I’ve met plenty of girls who give themselves the label ‘not sporty’ and don’t do anything to move their body. This will cause all sorts of problems later in life and will also be affecting your day-to-day life right now.

Exercising regularly helps us to:

• • • • •

sleep properly at night sweat out toxins and detox the body feel good, as it releases feel-good hormones that literally make us happier reduce stress and can be a great way to get out a bunch of feelings (Feeling angry at your little brother? Go for a run or to a boxing class and watch the anger fade away!) be more productive

So don’t use ‘too much homework’ as an excuse for not moving your toosh. Put down the books and go for a walk—you’ll come back fresher, with new ideas and ready to keep going. The trick is finding something you actually want to do. So start exploring.

Here are some ideas to get you started: -

Try a dance class—Zumba, Latin, contemporary, hip-hop —find something that sounds fun to you and join up! Sometimes adult classes are the best because they’re full of women like me, who have two left feet and are just doing it for fun. That will take the pressure off.

-

Try a few different yoga classes. Yoga can be so different —gentle and slow or powerful and strong. Some classes are in 40° heat and the instructor pretty much yells at you, other classes are spent pretty much sleeping for half the class. There’s even aerial yoga where you hang upside down—so fun! Find what you love and commit to going each week.

-

Grab a friend and commit to doing something together.

-

Walk the dog. But not like once in a blue moon. Commit to doing it a few times a week and challenge yourself—walk further or find hills so it’s more than just a stroll.

-

Download an app—a yoga one with a few poses to do at home just before bed, or a fitness one that takes you through a bunch of squats and sit-ups to do for half an hour before school. You can find a list of our favourites at www.shinefromwithinhq.com

Self-Care Rituals

We touched on the importance of creating rituals for ourselves under Menstrual Wellness (Page 78) but let’s expand for a moment here. I know your life is super busy. That’s why rituals are so great. They become little habits that you do each day, week or month to give back to you so you can keep on going. While you’re still at school and in a constant cycle of to-do lists, classes and activities, this is actually the perfect time to add some of your own beautiful rituals to your life. What makes a self-care ritual? 1. It makes you feel good and restores you. (So maybe not a regular ice cream binge—you would probably feel pretty gross afterwards, even if your tastebuds loved it at the time!) 2. It occurs regularly. (So not like a one-off massage once a year.)

68 Crush It Magazine

Self-care rituals don’t have to be complicated or fancy. In fact, the simpler the better. You probably already have a bunch of self-care rituals in place, you just don’t realise it.

Some ideas include: •

Journalling each evening as you lie in bed getting ready for sleep. Get a notebook and just write what comes into your head. It doesn’t have to make sense, it can just help to get thoughts down on paper.

Going to netball each week. If this makes you happy and gets your body moving, then that’s a self-care ritual.

Stretching in the morning before you get ready for school.

Putting your rollerskates on, a sweatband around your forehead, some high socks, knee pads and fluoro activewear, then rollerskating down the street. (Hey, whatever floats your boat!)

Cleansing and moisturising your face each night.

Having a bath once a week.

Reading fantasy novels for half an hour before sleep.

Putting on your favourite song while you’re getting ready for school.

Having a green smoothie each afternoon when you get home.

• •

Turning off your phone and computer at a certain time each night—this is a self-care ritual too. Watching a bit of TV after school. I know this can be frowned upon but honestly, just sitting there and tuning out for a while can actually be very restorative and help you calm down after a full-on day. (Just don’t get stuck in a six-hour binge session—trust me, you won’t feel great after that!)

Getting creative once a week or once a month with craft, art, gardening, jewellery making, candle making or a colouring-in book.

The key to a great self-care ritual is making sure it’s scheduled in. Of course, there will be times when you’re not able to do it. But if you get into a habit of doing it regularly and, most importantly, know you can do it when you are starting to feel extra stressed or not like your usual self, then it will be beneficial for you.

Take shine-worthy action Create a self-care menu or list for yourself. Make it pretty and stick it on your wall. Do something from that list each day if you can, but don’t feel bad if you don’t get something done. The important thing here is that you do something on the list when you’re feeling stressed, to bring peace back into your life. 69

FOOD

HEALTHY EATING FOR YOUR TEENAGE YEARS

W

ith so much conflicting information available online, healthy eating can be difficult to navigate. That’s why the team of Dietitians from Fuel Your Life are here to share their top tips for healthy eating in your teenage years – from foods that will help you with your studies, to foods that can help your skin! Before we get into that though – some of you are probably wondering what a Dietitian actually does… A Dietitian is a health professional who studied the human body, food and nutrition in great detail at university. We help people to meet their health goals through correct nutrition. Just some of the things a Dietitian can help with are – food allergies / intolerances, weight management, chronic conditions such as Diabetes and healthy eating for different ages.

70 Crush It Magazine

71

Intuitive Eating One of the most common concerns we hear as Dietitians is that people don’t know how much food they should be eating, based on their age, gender and lifestyle. The challenge with this, is everyone has their own individual requirements for foods and energy. One of the best ways to know if you’re getting enough (but not too much) of the foods you need is to eat “intuitively”.

Healthy Eating 101 Healthy eating looks a little different for everyone, but generally speaking, a healthy diet is one that provides us with all of the nutrients our bodies need to grow and function at its best. The easiest way to know you’re getting all of the nutrients you need, is to eat foods from the five food groups every day. These are fruits, vegetables, wholegrains, dairy products and meats/alternatives. On the other hand, foods such as soft drink, pizza, cake and hot chips whilst can contribute some nutrition to our diet, often this comes at a price and are laden with extra energy that our bodies do not often need. These foods we like to call “party foods” and are to be enjoyed but with limited frequency and mostly at parties. Food can form a central part of celebrations and is to be enjoyed – think birthdays (birthday cake), Easter (chocolate eggs) and Christmas Day (mmm… Nana’s pavlova). The key is to enjoy these foods from time to time but focus on eating foods from the five food groups most every day. 72 Crush It Magazine

Intuitive eating involves listening to your body – eating when you feel hungry and stopping when you are not hungry anymore. Although this sounds straightforward, it’s easy to become out of touch with your natural hunger and fullness cues. Learning to trust your body to guide when and how much you eat really does form the foundation of a healthy relationship with food! Our biggest tip to help you eat intuitively is to minimise distractions at mealtimes (e.g. the TV or electronic devices). Distractions when you’re eating make it harder for you to listen to your natural fullness cues. By removing the distractions and really focusing on enjoying your food (think - flavour, texture, colour, smell), you’re better able to recognise when you’re satisfied, which can prevent overeating.

Eating for your Teenage Years Our teenage years are a period of massive growth, and most importantly for our bones. In order to grow strong and resilient bones, we need to eat foods rich in calcium. These are things like dairy (milk, yoghurt, cheese), fortified soy milk, kale and spinach. Another essential mineral often lacking in teenagers is iron, leading to iron deficiency anaemia. This can definitely set you back in your studies, making you feel constantly tired, weak and exhausted. To prevent iron deficiency, try incorporating some of these iron-rich foods into your week – red meat, tofu, baked beans, lentils and an iron-fortified breakfast cereal (e.g. Weetbix). For the best hit, make sure to include some fruit and vegetables with these foods such as cereal and fruit, a glass of fruit juice with toast and vegemite and Steak with salad.

Food and Skin Did you know that your skin is actually an organ? Just like the rest of our body, our skin requires certain nutrients to function at its best. During our teenage years, our skin undergoes rapid turnover and changes due to the surge in hormones. Often this is the prime time our skin is subject to breakouts. Foods like fish, walnuts and chia seeds contain particular types of fatty acids that are essential to help to reduce inflammation, which occurs during an acne flare-up. In addition, vitamins that help to support our skin during these times of rapid turnover are Vitamin A, C and E. These work to protect the skin from sun damage and help the skin to repair itself after a breakout. All fruits and vegetables are chock full of these vitamins but an easy code to remember is choosing one fruit and vegetable of each colour every day. These might include: Spinach and kiwi fruit, Capsicum and carrots, Beetroot and blueberries, Walnuts and Potato. Bonus points – most fruits and vegetables also contain water. Drinking (and eating) enough water is essential for keeping the skin healthy and hydrated. If you’re not a big water drinker, try adding some sliced fruit to add flavour. Our favourite combination is strawberries and lemon! While certain nutrients can play a role in reducing acne, it’s also important to remember that pimples and oily skin are a very normal part of teenage life – we’ve all been there! If you’re still concerned with your skin, its best to discuss this with your Doctor. 73

Food and Mood The types of foods we eat can also impact on our mood and energy levels. When we eat party foods such as soft drinks, lollies, chips and chocolate, the sugars in these foods are often absorbed very quickly and can give a brain a boost of energy. The only problem with this is unless we follow these foods up with a meal high in protein and slow release carbohydrates such as a chicken, cheese and salad sandwich on seedy bread this will generally be short-lived. I bet you have all been there, it is a great mood and energy booster whilst it lasts, but next time you are reaching for that kick of energy, think twice and maybe heat up some left-overs from the night before.

Eating for School Performance When it comes to school performance and exams, fuelling your brain with the right nutrients can help you pay attention in class, retain information and concentrate for longer when you’re studying. Here are our top tips to help you fuel your brain and ace that next exam.

74 Crush It Magazine

1. Just eat breakfast!

3. Keep hydrated

You wouldn’t starve your body of food before a marathon, so don’t starve your brain of fuel before an exam! A pre-exam breakfast should contain some wholegrains for energy, a chunk of protein and a dash of fat to keep you focused. Our favourite is sliced banana and peanut butter on wholegrain toast with a glass of milk. Alternatively, blend together milk, yoghurt, ice, rolled oats, banana and blueberries for a breakfast smoothie on the go.

As much as 1.5% dehydration can affect your focus, mood and energy levels. Remember to reach for water rich foods such as fruits and vegetables and top that off with at least 1.5-2L of water each day to maintain your brains focus.

2. Pack snacks Right before your exam, aim to have a small snack to top up your brain’s energy levels. Even if you’re not hungry, something like a piece of fruit or some wholegrain crackers with peanut butter will prevent a rumbling tummy during your exam and give your brain that extra boost it needs to stay focused.

4. Get a good night’s sleep While it’s tempting to stay up late cramming for an exam, scientists have actually found a good night’s sleep can boost your performance for that all important exam the next day. This is because while you sleep, your brain is busy cementing all the knowledge you’ve studied earlier that day into your memory. Bottom line – put the books down and get your eight hours sleep. Your grades will thank you for it!

* Homemade Powdered sugar: You can use any granulated sweetener, such as coconut sugar or raw cane sugar. Place sweetener of choice in a small blender or food processor. Using a flat grinding blade, process the sugar until it is a fine powder. Voila! Homemade powdered sugar.

1/2 cup sunflower seed butter or other nut/seed butter of choice 1/3 cup powdered sugar or homemade powdered sugar* 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 cup allergy friendly chocolate chips 1 teaspoon coconut oil, you’ll need to store the eggs in the fridge since they will melt easier

The amount of powdered sugar needed for this depends on how thick or thin the nut butter is. You may have to experiment a little with the amount, starting with less and adding more as needed.

2.

Pinch off about 1 Tablespoon dough and roll into an egg shape. Set aside on a wax-paper or parchment lined cookie sheet.

3.

In a small microwaveable bowl, heat the chocolate chips and coconut oil in 30 second intervals, stirring after each 30-second segment, until the chocolate is melted (about 1-1/2 to 2 minutes).

NINAJIRACHI CELEB CHAT

1. What motivates you to crush your dreams? Ambition, which I’ve felt for most of my life. I want to live up to all the things I’ve aspired to since I was really young. 2. Who is your biggest inspiration in life and why? I’m really inspired by the people working hard around me - my parents, my team, my friends and collaborators. 3. What do you like to do when you’re not making music? Exercising, swimming, gardening, making visual art and videos, researching and learning about things that I find cool. 4. Favourite place you’ve travelled to for your music? Probably Falls Festival Lorne, Victoria - it’s right on the Great Ocean Road and the festival itself is in a forest - it’s amazing. 5. What would you say is your biggest accomplishment? Finishing my EP and signing it to NLV Records - Nina Las Vegas has been an idol to me since I was 14 and it blows my mind that she believes in my music and has done so much to help me.

78 Crush It Magazine

6. How old were you when you started your love for music? My parents love music so I’ve listened to it as long as I can remember, and I started learning piano when I was 7 or so. 7. What music did you listen to as a child? All of the music that my parents played - they both love dance music so I guess it was early exposure. Jamiroquai, Lou Reed, ABBA, as well as plenty of dance pop that was on the radio. Throughout primary school my favourite artists were The Veronica’s, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Britney Spears, The Black Eyed Peas, etc. 8. If you had to do anything other than music what would it be? Probably directing/producing film, tattoo art or some kind of environmental science. 9. What is a quote that motivates and inspires you? By Steven King - ‘amateurs sit and wait for inspiration - the rest of us just get up and go to work.’ 10. How do you deal with pre show nerves? I really don’t know how to - it’s something I just have to wait out. Usually once I start playing I’m fine. I tend to get most nervous when I’m touring all by myself.

79

11. What is a standard studio day for you? My studio is just my bedroom, so they’re rarely full ‘studio days’ because it’s easy to be distracted at home - more just a few hours at a time. If I’m collaborating in someone else’s studio space I’m usually far more productive and it’s easy to work for hours and lose track of time. 12. Who would you like to collaborate with next? Rihanna and Lady Gaga - but I’m not sure that will happen. Maybe one day haha. 13. What’s your favourite music/artist at the moment? Right now I love the new Kito EP, new Swick mixtape, new Sinjin Hawke/Zora Jones EP, Hi Tom EP, Umru EP and Matt Corby album. 14. Who is your role model in the industry? Definitely my label boss Nina Las Vegas and my managers at Roc Nation. All absolute weapons. 15. What is your next goal in your career? I want to do more production work with/for other artists and write another EP after my first one is released.

16. Where are you off to next for your music? Nowhere actually! I’ve got one show left for the year and then I’m spending some time recouping.

Thanks for your time we appreciate it :)

NATURE & NUR FEATURED: HEALTH & WELLNESS

WITH KRISTY CELONI Hooked on sweets

The not so sweet downside

Sugar is everywhere. We are consuming more sugar in our diets than ever before and the problem is worse among teenagers. Teens not only eat the most sugar they are most susceptible to its effects. Sugar is extremely addictive, and its effects are linked with similar effects on the brain as alcohol or tobacco.

Too much sugar consumption has been linked to obesity, acne, cellular ageing, increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer. I get it, you are young and the potential of any of this happening to you seems a lifetime away BUT taking steps to create healthy habits now helps you continue these habits into adult hood.

Children are given lollies as treats after sporting events or as rewards in class, teenagers are often seen eating ice creams or Slurpee’s on a hot summer’s day. Canteens at any sporting event with an abundance of lollies for 5c and soft drinks sold for $1. Easter eggs on the shelves since January, oh, and to top all of this off most processed food has large amounts of hidden sugar. It seems impossible to avoid doesn’t it?

For now, watching your sugar intake will definitely make you FEEL better. Too much sugar will - Decrease your energy (although initially give you a boost) - Negatively affect your mood - Decrease memory and focus - Hinder maintaining a healthy weight - Cause tooth decay - and contribute to poor skin health.

So how do we start to successfully minimise it in our diets? We need to identify the harm Sound like good enough reasons to cut back it causes, how it relates to you and educating on the sweet stuff? yourselves on the healthier alternatives.

PLANET ARK BY LAURA

How to make money and be environmentally conscious at the same time Five states and territories in Australia have a Container Deposit Scheme – where you can take your empty beverage bottles to a location and get 10 cents back, per item, in return. If you’re feeling generous, you also have the option to donate $ to a charity. Or if you’re on your way to the supermarket, through some schemes you can get a discount voucher for your groceries!

97

Why use these schemes? What can be recycled? In NSW, drink container litter makes up nearly half the volume of all litter in the state! Plastic bottles are even ending up in the ocean. You’ve probably all seen empty soft drink cans or bottles lying in the gutter or a park. It’s a big environmental issue and this a really simple and easy way we can be a part of the solution! It’s also an easy way to get some extra pocket money!

It differs slightly from state to state, so be sure to check online first (see links). Most programs were set up to encourage the recycling of small, take away drink containers, and therefore these are the items they target. This means bottles you might grab while at the beach or shopping, not large containers like 2 litre milk or juice cartons. These larger containers can just be recycled in your home recycling bin.

Where are these schemes? The South Australian scheme is the oldest, running since 1977, and has been hugely successful. For SA drop off locations, visit http://www.epa.sa.gov.au/environmental_info/container_deposit/collection_depots Next came the Northern Territory’s scheme, in 2011. Visit: https://recyclingnearyou.com.au/containerdeposit/cds-nt.cfm for locations, including opening times. The Queensland Container Refund Scheme ‘Containers for Change’ opened on the first of December last year and saw 17 million containers returned within the first two weeks! Visit: https://www.containersforchange.com.au/ for FAQs, including drop off locations. For ACT Container Deposit Scheme locations, see https://actcds.com.au/ and for NSW, visit https://www.epa.nsw.gov.au/your-environment/recycling-and-reuse/return-and-earn.

Stay informed: Visit: https://recyclingnearyou.com.au/containerdeposit/ for a host of information about each of the programs – including how they work. Social media is another great place for info. For example, the Queensland Container Deposit Scheme regularly posts helpful instructions on their Instagram feed @returnitqld.

Whether your motive is to save your pretty pennies for something special or to become an eco-heroine, by using these schemes you are helping to keep our beaches, parks and streets beautiful. By recycling rather than just throwing drink containers in the bin, you’re also helping to keep them out of landfill where they can take several hundred years to break down. This is a pretty huge impact to make through taking this small and simple action!

LUNETTE Introducing Lunette: leader of the period revolution

P

ut simply, Lunette is the future of period care. Born and bred in Finland, the brainchild of Heli Kurjanen, the Lunette menstrual cup was designed for women of every age, shape, size and childbearing stage. The product took Finland by storm, enabling Lunette to go international – enter Australian sister team Elizabeth Chapman and Carol Morris. The duo worked with Kurjanen to bring the first medical silicone cups to Aussie shores in 2007. Together, they’re hoping to change women’s mindsets about disposable sanitary items, offering both encouragement and empowerment to make more sustainable choices.

About Lunette Lunette is so much more than a company that produces menstrual cups. Better ways to describe them include (but are not limited to): ·

Leaders in the period revolution

·

Champions of period positivity and shame-free bleeding

Team Lunette believes in bringing education, opportunities and intelligent, sustainable period care solutions to every menstruating person on the planet. No one deserves to put their day-to-day life on hold just because they don’t have access to safe and comfortable menstrual care.

To achieve this they’re starting at grassroots level, bringing their Sustainable Period Project Menstrual cup mother hen, welcoming to schools across Australia and New Zealand. one and all A world-first, the project provides schools and health professionals with a free Teachers of menstruation and how to Resource Kit to ignite discussions about harness the power within modern sustainable sanitary options. Each kit contains samples of biodegradable disposable Mother nature’s happy helper pads, reusable period underpants, reusable –committed to leaving the planet better cloth pads, menstrual cups, videos and activities than when we found it that can be used for classroom education for years to come. The future of period care

103

Why now? When it comes to choosing a sanitary product today, studies have shown that the majority of menstruators will continue using the same product they were introduced to during early puberty – more often than not, tampons or sanitary pads. Chances are, it’s all our role models knew of at the time, and schools continue the tradition of educating solely on disposables. While these products work, they’re doing no favours to the world we’ll leave behind. About 22 disposable sanitary products are used per cycle, that’s 11,000-16,000 during a lifetime. Whats more, up to 90 per cent of a sanitary pad is plastic and can take up to 500 years to decompose. The maths continues and can become quite overwhelming, but in summary if each person menstruates for 30-40 years, and there are over six million Australian and New Zealander menstruators every month, the result is an astronomical amount of landfill and waterway pollution, not to mention money wasted.

104 Crush It Magazine

The stats speak for themselves – our current way of dealing with disposable menstrual hygiene products isn’t sustainable and our schools have little to no resources to educate about sustainable options. Lunette’s Sustainable Period Project has set out to change that and strives to empower students to decide on and examine alternatives that have important health, cost and environmental impact on the future of our beautiful country. The Sustainable Period Project aims to provide Resource Kits to all secondary schools by 2020. For more information, visit: www.SustainablePeriodProject.org
