A Glimpse Inside

Protecting the World’s Wild Places

We recognise that by taking passengers to some of the world’s most fragile and untouched ecosystems, we have a responsibility to inspire, educate and advocate for the protection and preservation of the places we visit.

Our Journey

When legendary Australian mountaineer Greg Mortimer and his adventurer wife, Margaret, first set their sights on the polar regions over 30 years ago, they got goosebumps. But not from the cold. Their passion for exploration and deep respect for remote environments led to the founding of Aurora Expeditions in 1991, built on the belief that travel can be a powerful force for positive change.

In 1997, Aurora Expeditions ventured into the Arctic for the first time, drawn to its vast, ice-covered landscapes, rich cultural history, and extraordinary wildlife. Since then, our connection to the region has only deepened. Today, we bring a pioneering spirit and a steadfast commitment to sustainability to every Arctic voyage.

By immersing our expeditioners in the beauty and fragility of this remarkable region, we foster a greater understanding of the Arctic’s importance and inspire lasting ambassadors for its protection and preservation.

Today, we are an award-winning pioneer in responsible small-ship exploration travel, a Certified B Corporation™ and proudly carbon-neutral.

Should your next journey be with us, we promise an immersive, inspirational and profound experience – regardless of which corner of this incredible planet we explore together.

What Sets Us Apart

Since the start, it’s been our ideals that make us exceptional. In 1991 we set out to forge a unique niche, curating unforgettable trips to the world’s natural, cultural and ancient wonders. Our intimate ships carry no more than 130 expeditioners, fostering camaraderie and easy friendships. Plus, they’re able to reach environments larger vessels can’t. We’re proud to be a Certified B Corporation™, offering immersive activities, more time off-ship, and thoughtful enrichment programs as we explore our planet responsibly.

For Us, Recognition is Motivation

Winning awards is an honour and for us, much more. At Aurora Expeditions, we continue to be recognised as an industry leader in exploration travel by many prominent organisations and publications. Each award serves to reinforce the values that brought us here, and challenges us to set our bar of excellence higher, constantly improving for staff, travellers, and our world alike.

Our Commitment to This Incredible Planet

Responsible travel has remained at the heart of our business from the start. As a Certified B Corporation™, we proudly join a global movement of companies that meet rigorous standards of social and environmental impact, transparency, and accountability. This certification represents more than just a milestone; it’s a testament to our ongoing commitment to doing business responsibly, guided by principles that prioritise people and the planet.

The B in B Corp stands for ‘Benefit for all’. We strive to deliver voyages that have a minimal footprint while creating a positive impact on the extraordinary places we visit. From achieving carbon neutrality in 2021 to publishing our inaugural Impact Report in 2023, our journey reflects our dedication to the protection, regeneration and appreciation of Earth’s natural wonders.

Path to Net Zero

We are proud to be carbon-neutral, offsetting 100 per cent of our greenhouse gas emissions. With full recognition that this is only our first step towards net zero, we also take meaningful climate action by tracking, measuring, and reducing emissions across our operations and supply chain.

Resource Conservation and Circularity

Our focus is on responsible procurement, working with suppliers that align with our values. We also work to reduce waste and pollution by considering carefully the life cycles of the materials we use. For our vessels, we purchase products in bulk and use reusable products whenever possible.

Protecting and Preserving Ecosystems

It’s a privilege to take travellers to the world’s most fragile and untouched ecosystems. We recognise our responsibility to inspire, educate and advocate for the protection and preservation of the environments we visit. And we are committed to the regeneration of wilderness around the world. We were among the first members of AECO and IAATO, participating in clean-ups globally, and generating awareness to the importance of keeping our oceans and landscapes clean.

Inspiring Through Science and Education

In our eyes, travel is the best educator. Learning alongside our onboard experts and ambassadors affords countless opportunities to form deep connections with the incredible places we visit. Passengers are able to contribute meaningfully by participating in real scientific research through our Citizen Science Program.

Community Engagement and Shared Values

Fostering meaningful bonds with communities is vital. We proudly welcome members of the Inuit community on board select voyages to Greenland and the Northwest Passage. And across the globe we celebrate the authentic flavours of our destinations by serving meals with ingredients sourced from local producers dedicated to natural and ethical farming.

Get Your Bearings

Embark on a small ship journey to the most extraordinary natural, cultural and historical wonders across the globe. This season, we’re excited to offer an even greater variety of destinations than ever before.

Natural Treasures of Costa Rica

Costa Rica | 7 Days

Costa Rica, meaning ‘rich coast’, is a nature lover’s paradise. While it is a small country, Costa Rica contains approximately six per cent of the world’s biodiversity. The country has environmental conservation policies in place – roughly a quarter of the country is made up of protected jungle – and we are incredibly fortunate to explore the region on land and sea. We hope to observe the unique wildlife, including a number of indigenous birds and animals such as marbled wood quails, hummingbirds, toucans, spider monkeys, iguanas, sloths, and perhaps the rare and endangered scarlet macaw.

Our Small Ships

We proudly operate a fleet of three state-of-the-art, purpose-built ships designed for exploration. Each uses the latest advances in design and technology, creating a revolutionary small-ship experience. Our dedication to offering exceptional voyages to small groups means travelling with no more than 130 passengers to the polar regions.

Small Ships, Big Adventure

Our Ships’ Namesakes

The Greg Mortimer honours our founder, legendary explorer and mountaineer Greg Mortimer OAM. The Sylvia Earle is named after leading conservationist, marine biologist and oceanographer Dr Sylvia Earle, who was the first person selected as ‘Hero for the Planet’ by Time magazine and is one of the greatest advocates for protecting the world’s oceans. Our newest ship, Douglas Mawson, is named after Sir Douglas Mawson, a legendary Australian explorer and geologist who was a key expedition leader during the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.

Intimately Sized Yet Hugely Innovative

Venturing to the farthest reaches of the planet, our small ships are able to navigate where others can’t, allowing for unparalleled up-close encounters with nature. The Ulstein X-BOW® makes sailing smoother and faster, and is built to leave the marine environment undisturbed.

The Perfect Base Camp For Adventure

On board, we offer everything you need to maximise your comfort and relaxation. While these brilliantly designed ships could be a destination in themselves, our primary focus is on showing you the wonders of the outside world through expansive windows, multiple observation decks, and an array of expedition equipment so you can venture off-ship into the local environment as much as possible.
