The Beginners Guide

to Cruising Cruise holidays have become more affordable over the years without compromising on quality. Did you know that if you were to compare a land based holiday of a similar standard to the cruise lines you could be saving as much as 25%? Waking up in a new place every morning is a unique experience and is the perfect way to see the world in luxury.

So what’s included in the price?

Accommodation All cabins come with twin beds that can be converted to a queen size bed; cabins are compact but are comfortable and many can take a third or fourth person. All cabins will have an en-suite bathroom with shower or a bath. Some of the newer cabin styles which are sold to families and larger groups of people have two bathrooms, but that’s still a rarity.

Meals Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks are included in the main restaurants and buffets. There are also special dining events like afternoon tea and midnight buffets included in your price. However, the majority of cruise lines now have alternative, speciality dining in more intimate restaurants which normally come with a cover charge, so we recommended you book these restaurants at the start of the cruise as they fill up quickly.

Entertainment Shows, comedians, nightclubs and all evening entertainment are included as well as most of the facilities such as the pool, sauna, hot-tubs, fitness rooms, tennis and basketball courts.

Some facilities, such as the spa facilities incur a fee.

Remember, there is so much more included all in the price of a cruise than what you get in a land based holiday. Just imagine paying for flights to see all the destinations in one holiday!

What about cabin types?

Whilst you tend to spend little time in your cabin whilst onboard the ship there are various cabin options available.

Cabins tend to be priced by grade, depending on the size of

the cabin and the position on the ship.

Inside cabins are the lowest priced but will include all the same basic facilities as an outside. It’s worth bearing in mind that a superior inside will be larger than a standard inside. If you like to be out and about, then an inside cabin is probably the right choice for you as it will be the base where you just lay your head. On Royal Caribbean’s new Quantum Class ships the inside cabins have virtual LED screens which projects images of the scenery outside.

Outside cabins feature a porthole or picture window for which you can see the grand ocean vista, as with the inside, facilities will remain the same but with the added advantage of natural light.

Balcony cabins are the most popular option these days and newer ships are built to reflect this by offering over 80% of its accommodation in this type. Balcony cabins do tend to be larger than both the inside and outside cabin options so balcony cabins are well suited to families. They are a great place to escape and maybe read a book or sip a cocktail whilst waiting to see what’s on the horizon.

bathroom or maybe a separate living area then a suite maybe the ideal cabin option for you.

These vary from mini suites to full scale grand suites which may even have a whirlpool or grand piano. On Royal Caribbean’s Oasis and Quantum class ships there are twostorey loft suites and the Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Epic features grand villas.

What you should expect in your cabin?

Whatever grade you select, your cabin will have the following: • Small private bathroom with shower, wash basin and toilet, international shaver socket, towels, soap and shampoo • Most ships have twin beds which can usually be converted into a queen-sized bed • Some cabins will have one or two additional fold-away beds which are ideal for families • Telephone and TV – many now also offer satellite channels and films • Vanity/desk area and chair • Wardrobe and drawer space, bedside cabinets or drawers

• Your personal cabin steward will tidy your stateroom each day and replace your towels. Most cruise lines offer a turn down service each night.

From Royal Caribbean International’s Harmony of the Seas to Holland America Line’s Koningsdam - all of the vessels on our New Ships On The Block list have one thing in common: they will be the most innovative ships ever to sail the seven seas!

They may all look similar from a distance, but that’s where the similarities come to an abrupt end. Here’s a breakdown of everything you need to know about the newest ships at sea.

CARNIVAL VISTA CARNIVAL CRUISE LINE Carnival Cruise Line’s ships have one thing in common – guests onboard always have fun! Its catchphrase is ‘Switch on Fun’, so you know when you set onboard a Carnival Cruise Line ship you’re going to have the time of your life, and Carnival Vista fits this mold perfectly.

The new Vista is now the biggest ship in the Carnival fleet and has lots of exciting new innovations and firsts, such as the only iMax at sea! Yes, that’s right, you’ll get to watch all the brand new movies at the same time as when they come out in the US. Another first is the Sky Ride, an adrenaline thrilled ride where guests strap into a bike, which is hanging above the ship.

There’s nothing quite like it at sea and it’s bound to be a hit with guests.

There’s also new accommodation onboard and the cabins are more modern and comfortable than ever before.

The first new cabin grade is the Havana stateroom or suite. The Havana area is exclusive to those staying in that area – it’s like a membersonly club complete with its own Havana Bar, pool and club.

The cabins even have hammocks for those who want to kick back and relax. This part of the ship is set to be VERY cool and is all about relaxation.

To help make that a reality all guests staying in the Havana cabins must be over 12 years old. It’s not strictly an adult’s only area, but it’s also not going to be full of young children roaming around, which will definitely be a hit with couples keen to have a peaceful, and relaxing getaway. But families haven’t been forgotten about – far from it in fact, because another new type of cabin is the Family Harbor staterooms.

Families have always been a big focus for Carnival, and the line carries more than 700,000 children every year.

The new Family Harbor cabins have families in mind and they’re even close to the new Family Harbor Lounge, a 24-hour area exclusive to those staying in these cabins. Here you’ll be able to get your hands on breakfast and snacks, but it’s also a place for fun and games too. And while there are lots of exciting new things to see onboard,

some of the fun elements, which have become staples on a Carnival cruise, have returned onboard Vista. Carnival WaterWorks waterpark is back and it’s bigger than ever with waterslides galore. There’s also a new addition here, a ride called Kaleid-O-Slide.

The SportsSquare area is also returning and it will have a ropes course, football area, ping-pong tables, and mini bowling.

And for the children – there’s also Seuss at Sea which is part of the line’s partnership with Dr Seuss Enterprises!

This means kids will be able to enjoy Green Eggs and Ham with the characters from the famous children’s books, and will also enjoy story time and other fun activities.

Launching: May 2016 Where? Carnival Vista will be sailing in the Mediterranean until October before heading stateside where it will homeport in Miami, Florida!

MS KONINGSDAM HOLLAND AMERICA LINE Koningsdam is HAL’s first new ship in five years, and there’s a great buzz around the launch. The line’s new flagship is an “evolution” of the ships that have come before her and according to bosses at HAL, it is set to be the brand’s most exciting and innovative ship.

But for those who have grown attached to other HAL ships, fear not, because the line promised the new vessel will have many of the classic and more traditional features the line has become known for.

There are lots of new venues onboard and the line is also targeting a new customer base with the introduction of solo and family cabins for the first time. Koningsdam will have 12 single ocean view cabins, as well as 32 ocean view family cabins, which feature two bathrooms and sleep up to five people.

Also new is a wine making venue called Blend. Guests will be able to blend wines from five vintages: two cabernet sauvignons, two merlots and a cabernet franc. And it doesn’t stop there because guests will also be able to try their hand at cooking themselves by learning new recipes at the Culinary Arts Center.

But if you don’t fancy cooking dinner for yourself, there’s lots of other new dining options such as French seafood restaurant Sel de Mer; the Grand Dutch Café and a redesigned Lido Market.

Restaurants such as the Pinnacle Grill, Canaletto and Asian restaurant Tamarind will all feature on

Koningsdam, having become firm favourites with HAL’s returning guests.

When it comes to entertainment, the World Stage has been getting a lot of media attention. It’s the ship’s main theatre and it features a 270-degree LED screen, which wraps around the audience. Piano spot Billboard Onboard is also likely to be a hit. The B.B King blues band, which features on six of the line’s ships already, will be returning on Koningsdam’s two-tier Queen’s Lounge.

Launching: April 2016 Where? The ship will spend its inaugural season sealing out of Amsterdam on a series of northern Europe and Baltic cruises. Koningsdam will then held across the Atlantic and sail from Fort Lauderdale to the Caribbean.

How many passengers? 2,659 Who will it suit? Couples and big groups travelling together. The ship may also be an option for solo travellers and familiesdue to the new accommodation facilities.

HARMONY OF THE SEAS ROYAL CARIBBEAN INTERNATIONAL When Royal Caribbean launched its Oasis class in 2009 everyone thought it was a bit mental! Sister ships Oasis and Allure of the Seas are the biggest ships in the world and they even feature a massive park, which runs through the centre of the ships. After several years the line announced it would launch a third Oasis class – and voila, Harmony of the Seas was born! The new ship is likely to be an evolution of the Oasis class ship, and it will have many of newest features, which appear on the Quantum class, which launched last

year.

Like the other two ships in the Oasis fleet, Harmony will be made up of ‘seven neighbourhoods’, each of which has its own distinct look and feel (important when you’re trying to find your way around this mammoth vessel!)

Firm favourites that are returning include the Flowrider, AquaTheatre, Central Park and the Royal Promenade.

New features include a Bionic Bar and Jamie’s Italian. The ship will also have one of the biggest water parks at sea, and the only water slides to ever appear on a Royal Caribbean ship. One of the slides will span 10-storeys, so this ship will definitely make a splash when it launches next year.

Launching: May 2016 Where? In her first summer season, Harmony will be based in Barcelona and will sail on seven-night Western Mediterranean cruises. The ship will then be repositioned to sail out of Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale in winter 2016/17.

How many passengers? 5,400 Who will it suit? Families

OVATION OF THE SEAS ROYAL CARIBBEAN INTERNATIONAL Ovation of the Seas is Royal Caribbean’s third Quantum class ship, following sister vessels Quantum and Anthem which both launched last year.

While being third in line means the ship is unlikely to have too many exciting new features, it will have the same stand out technology we have grown to expect from Royal Caribbean. Expect bars where the drinks are served by robots; a pod, which elevates way into the sky and is inspired by the London Eye; and a sky diving simulator which will leave you feeling as if you’re on cloud nine.

Launching: April 2016 Where? The ship’s main base will be Tianjin, China, however the ship will be operating winter sailings in 2016/17 from Sydney, Australia.

How many passengers? 4,180 Who will it suit? Families

‘mainsteam’ cruise brand, but all that changed when Escape began sailing the seven seas. This vessel, the first in the new Breakaway Plus class, is without a doubt a ‘premium’ level ship.

Norwegian has always been known for being one of the most child-friendly cruise lines out there, but they’ve bumped that up a notch on Norwegian Escape because there’s loads more new activities for youngsters (and those of us who like to think we’re young at heart).

The splash aqua park on the top deck is one of the largest at sea. The line has had slides on its ships for some time, which is great for teens, but now the waterpark and splash area is the perfect spot for children to cool off in the summer months. On the top deck it doesn’t stop there, as well as water activities, there’s also a mini golf course, a ropes course and a zip line. This ship is also the first in the Norwegian fleet to offer a nursery for babies and tots.

There are also some pretty cool adults-

only areas to be enjoyed. Inspired by beach parties in Ibiza, Spice H20 at the back of the ship is the perfect escape for adults wanting to get away from the buzz around the rest of the ship. By day you can lounge around in the hot tubs or in the waterfall grotto (yes, a grotto!!!), and by night you’ll be partying under the stars. This is one VERY cool venue and it is the place to be onboard Escape!

Other stand out venues onboard include Food Republic, where guests order on an iPad; Margaritaville; the 5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar; and the District Brew House which serves 24 draft beers and 50 by the bottle.

Launched: November 2015 Where? Escape is sailing on sevennight eastern Caribbean cruises from Miami, visiting ports such as St Thomas, US Virgin Islands; Road Town, Tortola; British Virgin Islands and Nassau, Bahamas.

A series of five 14-night itineraries in July and August 2016 cover St Maarten, St Thomas, Tortola, Nassau, Honduras and Cozumel in Mexico.

In days gone by Asia would have only featured on world cruise itineraries, and whilst this is still the case, the industry has definitely upped the ante when it comes to Far East cruises. More than 50 ships will operate in Asia this year, offering 1,065 sailings. But cruise lines aren’t just basing any old ships in Asia. Instead they’re making a big statement by sending their newest and best ships to voyage these exciting Asian itineraries and that’s all because Asia is the next big thing when it comes to cruising.

Royal Caribbean International’s newly launched Ovation of the Seas is sailing from Shanghai this year. Ovation will be Royal’s fifth ship in China, with Mariner of the Seas, Voyager of the Seas and Legend of the Seas also sailing there.

And it doesn’t stop there because Princess Cruises’ new ship, Majestic Princess, will sail from Shanghai too when it launches in 2017.

The sheer size of Asia means there’s plenty to explore with 168 destinations across 18 countries. But there hasn’t always been that many places to visit on a cruise ship because previously the infrastructure wasn’t in place in many Asian countries. In fact the number of Asian ports has increased by 34% since 2013. Japan has the most popular cruise ports of call, swiftly followed by Malaysia, South Korea and Thailand.

Japan is already a big focus for Princess Cruises who have based the newly renovated Diamond Princess there which operates sailings throughout the summer months. The Diamond Princess recently underwent a multimillion pound redesign and some of the onboard facilities have been tailored to reflect the destination for a more immersive experience. An extensive Japanese-style bath area (the largest at sea), a sushi restaurant and a new shopping area are just some of the new additions to the ship. At the time of the revamp, the line’s president Jan Swartz said it was important to “offer passengers an authentic experience onboard”, and part of that would be achieved through the new bath area which would reflect Japanese culture.

The Cuban archipelago consists of the islands of Cuba, the Isle of Youth, and around 4195 cays and islets which have a combined land area of 42.827 square miles (110,992 square kilometres). The largest island in the archipelago is Cuba.

Long and thin, it measures 744 miles (1200 kilometres) between San Antonio Cape, the westernmost tip of the island, and Maisi Point, its easternmost tip.

The towns and cities of Cuba are surprising for their variety of architectural styles: baroque, neo-gothic, neo-classical, art noveau, art deco, modernist and post-modernist and each of them add to the living history of the island. Museum cities of extraordinary charm can be found all over Cuba; the Old Havana, with its system of fortifications, the historic centre of the city of Cienfuegos; Trinidad, in the province of Sancti Spiritus; and the Historic Centre of Camaguey, are all well worth a visit for their history and their World Heritage status.

Cuba’s white and golden sandy beaches, with their warm safe waters, are another of the island’s great attractions.

Varadero Varadero is the largest resort in the Caribbean, which is unsurprising to learn when you discover it’s also home to what is arguably the best beach in the Caribbean too. The 20km stretch of white sand and perfectly clear waters make it one of the most idyllic spots for those seeking ultimate relaxation.

Bayamo Bayamo is a city that appears to be trapped in time. An amazing 40% of the population still use horses and carts for transport so the roar of traffic is replaced with the pleasant clip clop of hooves. It’s a city where the streets are still the heart of the social community and by day you can expect to find seniors challenging one another to a game of chess upon rickety tables whilst by night the pace livens up as organs are rolled out onto the street for spirited Saturday night street parties.

Trinidad Feel like you’ve stepped back in time with a visit to Trinidad which is a one-of-a-kind, colonial Spanish settlement.

It’s easy to see why this is a Unesco World Heritage Site; it is Cuba’s oldest “outdoor museum” and it’s incredibly charming. Small coloured houses line the cobbled streets which echo with the sound of hooves as locals navigate the town by horseback. Smell the scent of Cuban cigars that hang from the mouths of country folk, hear the plucky twang of guitar music being played in the small squares and marvel at the sight of the Escambray Mountains in the distance.

The Zapata swamp is home to the endangered Cuban crocodile, several species of amphibians and even the world’s smallest species of bird – the bee hummingbird which is just one of over 350 species of bird which can be found in Cuba. It’s definitely got a novelty factor, there are not many hotels which offer you the chance to hit the ice regardless of the conditions outside. The rink is open to all levels of skaters and you don’t even have to reserve a slot.

On a number of ships the line also using the ice skating rink for game shows, parties, cooking demonstrations and ice shows, with performances from professional skaters from around the world, plus some character’s from some of the top children’s books and films.

It’s around -8 degrees in the bar and everything in the room is made from ice (including the actual bar!), so to keep guests warm they get given hooded coats and gloves to keep warm. The bar tends to hold around 25 people and can be reserved each night.

The line has partnered with BBC and Strictly Come Dancing to offer dancing themed cruises where the show’s celebrity stars, professional dancers and judges climb aboard to get involved in the action. It’s a common misconception that people go on a cruise and pile on the pounds because there’s so much food and drink around them. And yes, if you choose to, you can eat as much as you want. But it’s the same as any all-inclusive hotel, you just have to resist temptation, or head to the gym. Believe it or not, you could return from a cruise holiday having actually lost weight. And that’s because cruise lines are constantly innovating on their health and wellness offerings.

So whether you’re a gym junkie, a healthy food obsessive or more adventurous when it comes to exercise, there’ll be a cruise line suitable for you.

The top deck of many cruise ships is often used as a running track, and you’ll often see fitness freaks pounding the pavement as they run laps around a ship.

Onboard gyms The gyms on cruise ships are unbeatable (and they’re free, so make the most of them).

The equipment is always top of the range and it’s not often you can jump on a treadmill with views overlooking the clear blue sea.

On bigger ships, the gym can get pretty busy so to avoid the crowds head there during off-peak hours or burn off the calories while other guests are off the ship exploring a destination.

Gym classes are also a great way to get in shape, sign up for pilates, yoga or spinning quickly though because the sessions fill up quickly, even though they come at a cost (usually between up to $15 per class).

The gym on Royal Caribbean’s new Quantum class ships are widely thought of as the best gyms at sea.

Onboard activities Working out doesn’t stop with a gym on many ships because when it comes to fitness options, a lot of the newer ships have quirky and fun innovations and activities to help guests keep in shape. On Royal Caribbean, rock climbing walls, surf simulators, ice skating and roller skating available on many of the line’s ships.

Carnival Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line both have obstacle courses on the ships, and on P&O Cruises you can attend dance classes with Strictly Come Dancing stars.

Take part in the excursions While in port, there are often numerous opportunities to work up a sweat and many cruise line offer differing levels of shore excursions. Some will be relaxing trips, others will be strenuous and active. In Santorini, Greece, for example you can opt to hike your way up a volcanic islands, or in Scandinavia you might spend your time kayaking.

But if you’re not keen on watersports, or hiking, you can stay fit without even realising it, for example a walking tour around a city is an easy way to stay active and you’ll be working off calories before you know it!

Take the stairs It can be easy to become a little bit lazy while you’re on holiday. And on a cruise ship you can easily spend your day sitting in one spot for a whole day. So when you are on the move around the ship, try to take the stairs instead of the lifts. Some of the mega ships have up to 15 decks, so it’s an obvious way to keep the pounds off. You’ll soon see an improvement in your fitness levels, and you won’t feel as guilty after having an extra course at dinner. Taking the stairs is also often quicker than taking the lift, because you don’t have to wait in a queue, squeeze in the lift and then

stop at every floor on your way up or down.

Dine in a healthy restaurant Healthy restaurants seem to be the in thing onboard cruise ships these days. Royal Caribbean has just introduced Devinly Decadence, where all items on the menu are less than 500 calories, and Celebrity Cruises has its own version of a healthy dining venue in Blu. A lot of spas also serve healthier dishes, for example in Princess Cruises’ adult only area ‘The Sanctuary’ everything on the menu has a healthy twist.

Alongside Marco-Pierre White, James Martin and Atul Kochar, the French patissier joined the cooking heavyweights brought in to transform the dining experience onboard P&O Cruises and he’s already got countless taste buds tingling on the line’s newest ship Britannia.

Here he tells Cruise Nation about his involvement with Britannia and his love of cruise holidays! Plus he gives us a few baking tips.

His cakes grace the stands in Britannia’s Market Café and he’s been teaching countless cruisers to bake. But Eric Lanlard’s involvement with the new P&O Cruises’ ship first began several years ago...

The cruise line approached Eric to discuss the idea of working together well before Britannia was on the cards.

Lanlard said: “I guess our first meeting was more of a getting to know each other scenario and to see how I felt about cruising and what I could potentially bring to the table. Having cruised myself for many years I was extremely excited about the opportunity of getting involved and I felt there was a real gap for an exclusive and innovative afternoon tea at sea. “As conversations progressed, the Britannia project came to light and I felt this was an opportunity not to be missed.”

Eric has designed a range of cakes and sweet treats for the Market Café, located in the heart of the ship in the atrium area. He has also created an afternoon tea experience in dining venue Epicurean. Complete with edible perfume and savoury macaroons, the afternoon tea experience is unlike anything else you’ve experience, and it’s been fully booked since the ship launched in March.

Lanlard was heavily involved in the design process for Britannia, making sure his ideas were realistic and could be brought to life. “Britannia is not your regular ship,” he said.

“And I loved being involved with the project from start to finish. From creating the Market Café menu and afternoon tea in Epicurean and the concepts for each of those venues, to choosing the china and silverware and training the staff.

“I felt very privileged to be part of the creative team.”

Lanlard said he believes what he has created in The Epicurean is “a completely different experience anything else at sea or on land”. He said: “All of the components of a traditional afternoon tea are there - savoury, pastry and scones - but I jazz it up to become something completely different! It’s interactive with edible perfumes, a pipette full of coulis for you to squeeze in to your delightful treats all combining flavours you would have never even though off.

Since the launch of Britannia my signature afternoon tea has been fully booked non-stop - so passengers should get in early and book before boarding!”

As well as creating a menu for passengers to enjoy, Lanlard is also one of the chefs teaching guests some new skills in the innovative Cookery Club. Also on the roster of high profile chefs is Mary Berry, Theo Randall and the founder of Carluccio’s, Antonio Carluccio.

In addition to hosting classes, the celebrity chefs also host intimate dinners for guests. Lanlard said: “I love these because it is so intimate and I get a chance to really interact with people. I share baking tips, stories and a touch of gossip, all while the wine is flowing. It is good fun and an exclusive once in a lifetime experience with only 16 guests attending.”

Because of his partnership with P&O Cruises, Lanlard has sailed on a number of full cruises on Britannia.

Obviously the areas where he is involved are among his favourites, but he admitted he is a big fan of the spa onboard and joked: “You could lose me in there for hours!”

As for his other favourite venues onboard, Lanlard said: “Sindhu because Atul is a great friend and I love his signature dishes. The Crows Nest is great for panoramic views which are perfect on a sea day or port day, and of course, the amazing gin menu helps to pass the time. For a touch of glamour the LimeLight Club is such a great way to spend an evening with food and entertainment all at the same time.
