Workshop 4 - Decision Making for parents of young people with learning disabilities and additional needs Thursday 27 January 2022 10 am - 11.30 am If you are a parent carer of a young person who may not be able to make decisions about their welfare and finances now or in the future, you will need to consider the best ways to protect them as they move to adulthood.

Philip Warford is a lawyer and specialist in planning for the future of disabled & vulnerable people. He will talk through the key principles of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, who can make a Powers of Attorney and how the Court of Protection might help.

This workshop will cover Mental Capacity what is mental capacity & who assesses mental capacity? what affects mental capacity? different levels of capacity for different things how the Mental Capacity Act 2005 affects us Powers of Attorney what is a Power of Attorney? lasting Powers of Attorney explained Court of Protection what it is and what is does when and how to contact them timescales and their charges

Workshop 5 - Managing anxiety & challenging behaviour in young people with learning disabilities & autism (aged 14+) Wednesday 9 February 2022 11 am - 2 pm (with comfort break) Anxiety and challenging behaviour are 2 aspects of a young person’s additional needs that become more difficult to manage as they become older. This can sometimes result in your child struggling to attend school, closeting themselves and not participating in family life and challenging behaviour. Dr Mark Brown, founder of Special Help 4 Special Needs has over 30 years’ experience working with people with neurodiverse issues and/or learning disabilities to not only help the young person but their families manage the changes and development of their child. He is widely considered as a specialist in this field. This session includes an understanding of anxiety and why your child may struggle to manage it themselves why anxiety and behaviour can become more challenging as young people with additional needs become older how anxiety and challenging behaviour in young adults can impact upon all those involved the impact of anxiety/challenging behaviour upon education & home life e.g. school refusal, self-isolation how the environment affects what happens how to help support the individual with ongoing developmental issues which can affect behaviour & mood support and strategies for parents

Workshop 6 - Person-Centred Planning & how to ensure it reflects your young person’s needs & aspirations Thursday 3 March 2022 1 pm - 3 pm This session will be delivered by Sue Utley from PiP @ Croydon Mencap. Sue is a Family Link Worker and has both personal and professional experience in supporting parents to ensure their child receives a person-centred plan. This workshop is interactive, and includes understanding what Person-Centred planning is why Person-Centred planning is so important for your child how to elicit your child’s views how to start creating your child’s Person-Centred Map examples showing a successful Person-Centred Map
