REACHING HIGHER WITH TIMBER Congratulations to everyone involved in creating and submitting the entries for the Australian Timber Design Awards. Another year, another record. This year’s awards have attracted the biggest number of entries so far. It is an important milestone that comes at a time when exciting things are happening in the industry, Australia and abroad.

Some of these challenges may be how we will meet supply and demand, is the workforce fully ready for this change, and can we address all concerns.

The first six months of 2016 have resounded with positive news, research and results for the timber industry. I will begin with the achievement that has brought Australia up to pace with much of the rest of the world, for the development of mid-rise timber building systems.

To finish, I’ll leave you with a few points to consider to give perspective on the foundations of the work you are doing now, in building with the world’s oldest new material: timber.

The National Construction Code (NCC) announced on May 1st that it will allow Deemed to Satisfy (DTS) timber constructions of up to 25m effective height. This is approximately 8 stories high. The adopted changes followed a two-year consultation and research process headed by Forest and Wood Products Australia (FWPA), and involved both mass timber constructions like cross-laminated timber and traditional lightweight timber frames.

Architects, developers, building designers, engineers and builders have welcomed the changes to the NCC. Whenever speaking to representatives from the design, architecture or building design professions, the conversation had a positive, encouraging note, with the view that the code change creates new and exciting opportunities. To some of them the pursuit of timber in the construction of mid-rise buildings is inarguable. The arguments are the cost, the environmental and sustainability properties, as well as the health benefits and aesthetic qualities.

Some of the answers lie in coming up with bold and innovative ideas that push the boundaries for timber buildings.

Environmental benefits – the use of wood as a renewable construction material is on the rise at a local council level, with more Australian Councils adopting a ‘Wood Encouragement Policy’.

Urban infill apartment development – as Australian suburbs start to become ever denser in population and more facilities need to be built, mid-rise timber constructions will be the key to building in sensitive and constrained sites.

Cost benefits – independent comparative costing research from WoodSolutions suggests faster build times, with cost savings on timber structures. More studies will follow to support the cost benefits, as timber buildings across the country will be completed over the next 12 to 18 months.

The Code change is one of the biggest things that has happened in the industry for 30 years. We will continue advocating for more changes that will create more opportunities for the industry and all those working to support it.

As the year unfolded, good news kept coming our way. The last consumer research study conducted by FWPA in June this year revealed that not only is wood most Australians’ preferred material, but it is on the rise as the most used material for renovating, furniture making and redecorating. The 2016 specifiers’ research gathered an equally positive feedback: more than half of the respondents indicated that they will be increasing their use of engineered wood products and recycled wood in their projects.

In July, I attended one of the longest-running Australian furniture exhibitions and awards event. Much to my delight, over three quarters of the entries that had been submitted had a considerable wood component; and the quality of design and the craftsmanship were, in most cases, outstanding.

This leads me back to this year’s Australian Timber Design Awards. It is fantastic to observe the ingenuity, design skills and effort that goes into each and every one of the projects submitted to the Awards. Congratulations are in order to all contenders.

As we embrace “the beginning of the timber age”, as the UK architect Andrew Waugh rightly called it, there are a few challenges that we have to consider and I have no doubt we will manage to successfully address them.

SEVENTEEN YEARS Now in their 17th year, the Australian Timber Design awards are one of our country’s leading competitions open to all building and design professionals with a proud heritage of promoting the very best in timber design innovation.

It is pleasing to see that the 2016 Australian Construction Code changes allow timber construction in buildings up to eight storeys high. The code changes encourage and enable property developers and domestic builders to deliver more environmentally friendly buildings that are cheaper and quicker to construct. I look forward to the coming years for increased entries due to this code change.

JUDGING I N F O R M A T I O N

JUDGING PROCESS Entries are judged on outstanding timber use, appearance, workmanship, structure and innovation. Judges are looking, in particular, for context-suitable use of timber. Well-considered design and construction with timber will distinguish an entry.

With such a broad range of categories on offer, there is scope for recognition of a variety of applications. Each entry category is judged independently. This is an important feature of the Australian Timber Design Awards: a winning project may excel in a range of distinct areas.

It is important for entries to be comprehensive but concise – judges will refer to written statements, drawings, and detailed photographs, where appropriate, in order to distinguish a winner. As such, entrants must consider whether their project is suitable for the categories into which it is entered. Entries should display examples of outstanding design in the relevant areas and include a description of the use of timber in each project.

SELECTION OF JUDGES This year the judging panel consisted of five judges. The judging is presided over by a timber industry member. This broad representation across professions ensures that winners are chosen that excel in all aspects of the design. This also ensures that winners use timber appropriately, expertly and in a way which enhances the timber industry, and timber design in general.

JUDGES I N F O R M A T I O N

ABOUT THE JUDGES DIEGO BEKINSCHTEIN Diego joined JWA in 2002 and was appointed Senior Associate in 2009. Diego is fastidious by nature and oversees our residential houses from initial briefing to handing over the keys. He has a particular talent for developing a design into detailed documentation. Stitching together a solution for a challenging detailed design problem, figuring out the way that components come together, is where Diego excels. Diego has led many of our highly awarded houses including the City Hill House, Diamond Bay House, Kyneton Residence, Queenscliff House and Fairhaven House. In a shift in scale from single houses, he was also Project Architect responsible for the design and contract documentation phases of the Nigel Peck Centre for Learning and Leadership at Melbourne Grammar School and is currently leading the Phoenix Gallery project in Sydney.

KERRY CLARE Kerry Clare has been a principle of Clare Design since 1979 and produced a diverse range of architectural projects, from major urban and public buildings to small self-sufficient remote houses. The work is acknowledged as a rare combination of design excellence and high-level environmental performance. Lindsay Clare and Kerry Clare were jointly awarded the RAIA Gold Medal in 2010 and have over 40 RAIA awards for built works. Their practice is now based in Sydney and the Gold Coast to undertake selected projects across Australia’s eastern seaboard.

Alongside practice, Kerry continues to review roles for the City of Sydney, Randwick Council and Waverley Councils and teaching as Professor at the School of Architecture and Built Environment, University of Newcastle and Bond University, Gold Coast.

PERRY FORSYTHE Perry has a mix of industry, research and teaching experience obtained in the construction industry over a 36 year period. His experience stems from initiation at trade level followed by senior construction management positions in design, construction, estimating and project management.

He was managing director of a specialised consultancy company for over 20 years. In academia, he has spent many years involved in industryoriented research spanning the development of new construction methods, measuring construction efficiency, technology uptake, construction economics studies, software development and management systems development. He has published widely in both academic and industry sectors and has won a number of construction industry awards including a Churchill Fellowship and Gottstein fellowship.

CHRIS POTTER Chris has over 25 years experiences as a structural engineer working in Australia and the UK. During this period, Chris has led the structural engineering teams on a range of timber projects from heritage refurbishments to new build projects. Some of the iconic projects Chris has been involved with include: The adaptive re-use of the Woolloomooloo Wharf, Jones Bay Wharf and Pier 8-9 Walsh Bay projects in Sydney, the heritage refurbishment of Establishment house in Sydney, adaptive re-use of the existing wharf structure in Melbourne’s docklands and working with LendLease on the Forte CLT project in Melbourne.

KATE ST JAMES Kate St James, FDIA is an interior designer and editor-in-chief of Grand Designs Australia, Home Design, Renovate and several additional leading Australian home design titles at Universal Magazines. Kate’s design career has spanned three decades both in interior design and journalism, both here and abroad. She has held roles as a president of the Australian Architects Association, board member of the NSW Architects Registration Board and is a fellow of the Design Institute of Australia, Kate actively supports and promotes the design industry and encourages students and emerging designers.

The Three Capes track is a four-day walk taking in the magnificent scenery of the Tasman Peninsula on Tasmania’s south-east coast. In the Three Capes Track Cabins, a series of simple, elegant accommodation facilities developed in three distinct locations along the track route, sitting lightly and effortlessly in this dramatic landscape. The repeated and preassembled timber components were transported by helicopter in 800kg loads, and then assembled ‘flat-pack style’ on site by a small team of craftsmen. Timber integrates well into the bush environment and bushfire resistant species are used for important structural components. The infill walls were designed to be prefabricated and Tasmanian Oak plywood was the ideal durable material with enough flexibility to avoid damage when being transported by helicopter. Engineered timber in the form of ‘Smart Oak’ Tasmanian Oak flooring was used to form the finished floors providing a warm and welcoming space for hikers to stay overnight. The judges said that the project’s real achievement is “in its creation of great public amenity to inhabits in a remote area”, which we feel is due to the holistic approach to the outcomes and texture and warmth of the timber used.

The People’s Choice award for 2016 has been won by Makan Place restaurant. The Makan Place restaurant interior design showcases how a traditional Malacca building typology can be infused with a modern Australian hospitality mantra of cordiality and hygiene. Through the extensive deployment of recycled smoked timber as a visual indicator, the space is sub-divided into a vestibule; a courtyard and the main dining area sequentially, the vestibule signifies the old Malaccan sheltered walkway while introducing a warm ambience accentuated by the smoked Iron Bark wall cladding. The vestibule leads to the main seating area, it is continuously back-dropped

by Tasmanian oak lining board of light brown to creamy hue. The central courtyard is defined by vestibule timber posts of Cypress pine, the off-the-mill timber was roughly sawn and the surface being grinded and varnished three times to give off a weathered appearance. The recycled timber used in this project show cases how weathered and repurposed timber can impart a sense of character and hygiene into the design, the irregular tonal variation caused by a random mixture of species works in favour of the façade design. The grinding and smoking of the timber create crack lines and expose the timber grain assigns the chronological significance of the timber to the ambiance of the space.

The West End House occupies a rare fragment of previously undeveloped land in the historically dense innercity suburb. Located on a tight site, the residence is a finely crafted home that maximises light and ventilation while nestling smartly into the existing streetscape. The design takes cues from contemporary apartment design to organise space. Generous timber framed openings are provided to expand on internal volumes, borrowing external space and extending views. Light and ventilation are maximised in section, opening spaces further and provide framed views of the sky and adjacent landscape. Timber is central to the vision of the residence. Hardwood timber screening to the street and upper-level bedroom affords privacy to the interior while maintaining light and ventilation. Internally the timber language is celebrated with clear finished plywood linings.

Recycled structural timber joists and hangers are expressed, defining the intimacy of living areas and providing acoustic timber. Matching timber cabinetry conceals lighting and services while organising adjacent spaces.

The Architect described that the primary intention was to create an environmentally sustainable and modern Pavilion Addition to the existing white painted brick colonial house, which would be contrasting in form, material and colour. Timber cladding provided the natural choice and the harmony of new to old is most apparent looking back to the pavilion from the garden which is described as Sofia and Otto’s Playground. The ‘lean-to’ roof form and dark stained locally sourced hardwood cladding of the pavilion addition seek to evoke traditional farm outbuildings and also the spirit of the Tassie ‘shack’. Natural finish timber has been used to add visual and tactile warmth within the primary dark volume for the window projections and the welcoming recesses of the new entry and back porch as well as internally. The use of timber imbues a crafted quality to the new additions, exhibiting the skill of the builder in the meticulous resolution of details.

The Three Capes track cabins have been designed to make maximum use of the sun, maintaining warmth year-round through passive solar design in the magnificent scenery of the Tasman Peninsula on Tasmania’s south-east coast. Timber was the perfect material since it satisfied the requirements of lightness, standardisation and repetition, corrosion and bushfire resistance. Working closely with The Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service, a series of simple, elegant accommodation facilities in three distinct locations were developed utilising repeated and preassembled timber components. These components were transported by helicopter in 800kg loads and then assembled ‘flat-pack style’ on site by a small team of craftsmen. The comfortable light tones of Tasmanian Oak plywood provided good light reflection to help distribute daylight and provide a warm reflective glow to the limited amount of solar-powered lighting at night. Custom designed fixed windows with Tasmanian Oak window framing and linings were used throughout this project. The engineered floor boards were developed by 18mm thick boards from rotary peeled veneers cut from lowgrade Tasmanian Oak logs to enhance sustainable harvesting of regrowth forest. The finished flooring was required to have a hardwearing and durable surface finish.

The unique bush land site of Bold Park Aquatic influenced the decision to use timber for the structure and cladding throughout the building. Due to the large amount of leaf litter likely to be collected, gutters were placed at ground level, as well as the use of sweeping roof curves, providing both beauty and functional perspective of the building. The timber sits in harmony with the bush land setting, bringing nature in to the building, and then softening the entire building with sweeping ceilings of acoustically perforated plywood, and has engaged the local community with sustainability in a gentle, yet successful manner. The primary structure of the building is made from Radiata Pine glulam, with thin lamellae to allow for tight radius curves where the roof beams curve down to form the columns. In the opposing axis, circular lathed glulams struts support wind loads between rafters, while remaining visually recessed as compared to the primary structure.

The Farm is located on a windswept coastal headland. It is a single residence that accommodates multiple families. The key driver of design was the desire to create a minimal palette of natural materials reflective of the site. Thoughtfully used and detailed recycled timber is an important component of this project. The soft grey recycled timber surfaces unify the interior and complement the rammed earth. They imbue the interiors with a unique quality that is reflective of the landscape. All internal walls are lined in weathered recycled hardwood as are expansive ceilings and eaves. Timber boards on different elements are meticulously aligned and mitred.

Eaves and ceiling boards align exactly when seen through high light glass. There are no door jambs; instead the wall lining is precisely mitred around the end of each wall. Cabinet joinery is typically bookended by panels clad in recycled timber.

Timber is used as the primary component of this fit-out to create a distinctive space for a restaurant debut.

Australian timber veneers joining seamlessly are used to circulate, unfold and connect all of the functions of the venue while providing a journey through the historic interior. The contemporary timber form layers the existing fabric of the building; principally exposed brick, sandstone walls, wooden columns and old steel work, all serving the building during its many stages and all integral to the rich, original tapestry. The selected veneers were required to be flexible enough to be manipulated into non-orthogonal geometry while being durable enough to withstand the busy commercial environment. Employing timber into non-orthogonal geometry, 3D modelling and laser cutting technology were used to create the ‘sweep and motion’ throughout the site. Tasmanian Southern Blue Gum and Tasmanian Wattle Silver veneers were chosen for this project for their physical properties.

Henley Square Redevelopment was designed to create a redevelopment of a new community situated on a suburban seaside precinct. The concept design recognises the ‘good bones’ and history of the site. It provides layers of contemporary expression to enhance and extend the special qualities inherent in this special seaside location. Timber features heavily in all areas of the landscape design, including key elements in the creation of a promenade loop, extending the much loved lawn area, the redevelopment of the plaza to create a flexible and open ‘village square’, shade structures, a terrace edge to the beach, future buildings, laneways and plaza. Narrow format timber battens are crucial in realising the fluidity of the Ripple Lounge design concept, and in its ability to provide a natural, robust and thermally comfortable surface. The Ripple Lounge employs Blackbutt timber to provide a comfortable decking surface that enables multiple modes of interpretation and engagement. For the main structures, Coastal Blackbutt was specified for the structural timber, and White Cypress for the battens. The scale of the squares structures benefitted from a custom designed timber cladding to ensure they glow warmly with the evening sun, and, like the sea, shape-shift and shimmer through the day, and sparkle at night.

This reception space features a reception desk and wall as a composition of contrasting elements. The wall is series of dimensioned timber that unfurls over the robust aesthetic of the cantilever steel desk and reclaimed ironbark sleepers. The screen wall unfolds upon the ceiling and comprises 1200 individual Melunak timber elements, connected with 2100 fixings. The timber wall was to test the limits of dimensioned timber in the application of computational design strategies and CNC fabrication where complex construction assemblies are made efficient with digital processes. Each timber member has been CNC milled to a unique length and angle, which embeds the instructions for construction into the wall itself as a series of self-jigging elements. The design decision to use timber as the essential component of this reception space, results in a place that radiates warmth and showcases hand-crafted sensibility blended with the CNC process used to actually fabricate each timber section.

The Pieman Collection features the first exclusive range of furniture made using a new source of Australian specialty timbers sustainably salvaged from the hydro lakes of Tasmania. Named for its timber source, Lake Pieman, the collection is a unique collaboration of the primary producer, designers and manufacturer, a “paddock to plate” experience rarely seen in the design sector. One of the world’s first underwater forestry operations, Hydrowood is salvaging commercial quantities of Tasmanian exotic species such as Celery Top Pine, Sassafras and Blackwood. These rare, salvaged species have been used to create a series of unique furniture pieces with an exceptional provenance and narrative that are locally designed and made in Australia.

Due to the unique bushland setting of the site, timber was the only choice to reflect the building’s environment.

The building sits directly between a line of trees to the north, south and east. Radiata Pine glulams with Hoop-Pine plywood ceilings were chosen to achieve this immediate awareness of the local community with sustainability in a gentle, yet successful manner. This provides a soft and tactile building, with the structure on display for people to see. This curved roof also allowed the leaf litter to be flushed to the ground level. The light coloured plywood panels offset the powerful dark glulams and dark grey roof, creating a contrast between the recessive exterior versus the bright and warm interior. As the glulams have very strong grain, the hoop pine’s soft and non-linear grain complements this and doesn’t overpower the space. This bright and warm feel allows the natural light to bounce more effectively to the back of the rooms, reducing our reliance on artificial light as compared to using a darker panel.

Marist College has a rich heritage of connecting to the landscape and utilising its natural materials to create built forms. This College features numerous examples of recycled timber used as elegantly exposed structural elements. The uses of local timber species for furniture and landscape features are an overarching theme throughout the school. Ironbark and Spotted Gum recycled telephone poles are used to support the exposed primary and secondary Glulam timber trusses. Adopting locally sourced recycled timber columns has numerous sustainable outcomes including reduced carbon footprint, minimisation of transport impacts and salvaging used material. The Silvertop Ash cladding is locally sourced, and the supplier is AFS and PEFC certified. The Glulam and LVL trusses used through the centre were made from locally sourced sustainably managed forests, and are also manufactured using renewable energy. All coatings used to finish the timber elements are low volatile organic compound. The judges, in awarding this project, said timber was just a part of the overall sustainability solution displayed in the project. The design team had balanced the elements to sustainable design and used timber as a natural extension of this. Judges commented on the “numerous examples of recycled timber used in this project add character to the structure and speak of the previous life these elements have served”.

The Town of Cambridge associates very strongly with their bush land surrounds. The entire focus of the project was about Australian timber in the Australian bush land setting. Without the timber, the building would have been just like any other Australian Aquatic Centre, and largely devoid of a cultural identity. For each job, there is a specific timber to suit the task. For the curving primary structure, a flexible softwood that came in thin lamellae was used. The curved ceilings suited hoop pine very well, as hoop pine’s grain would not detract from the overall building. For the fully exposed timber pergola, Cypress was a better choice for its hardness and durability class. To complete this sense of continuity, the joinery is also fabricated from plywood. The result is a building where walls and ceilings speak to the joinery, and they all refer to the surrounding trees and bush land. Andrew Volkman, the project’s young designer contributed considerably to the design of Bold Park Aquatic.

106 Flinders Street was designed as a cabin laboratory for an architectural physicist in Melbourne’s CBD. The space reconsiders the conventional workplace vocabulary and elements, conceiving a single space to work, meet and entertain. The office offers a tranquil and meditative sanctuary that is entirely clad in Douglas Fir to create a welcoming space. A calm tranquil office - also referred to as a thought space - has been integral to this project in terms of the materials chosen and design. Designed to replicate the environment of the client’s usual workspace in the Dandenongs, the space reflects the client’s timber framed and clad house in the country and brings a much needed respite for inner city working, veritable modern day haven. An original solution, this is a one of a kind that breaks trend to invoke new uses and new associations and creates a signalling of what the future of work could be, focused on creation and collaboration.

The timber used in the Woodleigh School Senior Homestead is the central design element and pivotal to the overall architectural expression of the project. Spotted Gum was chosen for the engineered timber frame, external cladding and decking and internal veneer panels. Recycled Ironbark was also used for the pergola posts and bridge construction. The inspiration for the use of timber was derived from both the beautiful natural landscaped setting of the buildings and the desire to use warm and tactile materials expressing the structure inside and out. One of the key visions for the project was a commitment to environmental sustainability which required sourcing all local or Australian products wherever possible and ensuring that these products were sustainably sourced and manufactured. A three storey high, 120 self-contained student apartments make up this building.

A system of prefabricated timber-framed volumetric boxes is stacked upon each other, without the need for an additional support structure. The only connections between modules are four rubber pads, used to successfully isolate each unit acoustically. Fabricated off-site locally, the prefabricated timber roof and wall sections enabled simultaneous production of multiple components of the building reducing construction times and avoiding scaffolding on site. LVL joists were used for an efficient and environmentally friendly way of spanning the distances required.

The project also includes a CLT component used in the common rooms, stairs and all escape paths in the building. Because of CLT’s superior fire performance fire sprinklers are not used despite its being multi-storey timber construction.

Located on a windswept coastal headland, The Farm is a single residence that accommodates multiple families.

A minimal palette of natural materials reflective of the site is the key to the design. Inside the rammed earth structure, recycled timber is the main internal surface material of the building. The soft grey recycled timber surfaces unify the interior and complement the rammed earth. They imbue the interiors with a unique quality that is reflective of the landscape. All internal walls are lined in weathered recycled hardwood as are expansive ceilings and eaves. Timber boards on different elements are meticulously aligned and mitred. Cabinet joinery is typically bookended by panels clad in recycled timber. The Farm is designed to have long life span. The use of recycled timber such that it is intrinsic to the building, will allow it assume a long life in situ which is an important sustainability objective.

Located within an established shopping centre, Lilly’s Espresso e Cucina involved creative utilisation of sliced decorative timber veneers to form a united dining room in a tall but fragmented space. The design needed to suit both day and night trading, relying on material selections, form, lighting and layout to create a sense place far from the crowd of the shopping centre. The rich natural tones of timber are contrasted against black edges and deep shadows creating a layered interior. The sensuously curved ceiling draws patrons inside while concealing lighting, air conditioning, security and audio services beyond. Glue laminated solid American Oak engineered board for a larger surface area such as bench tops and dining table tops and Veneered Crown cut American Oak were chosen to create a clean look and create the impression of solid timber being used.

Inlet house is inspired by a site encircled with native trees, an estuary, sand dunes and coastal cliffs. The design response has a sense of being ‘right for place’ with timber palate that respects and enhances the locale. Inlet house is all about drawing the outside in. Timber cladding, decking and bluestone seamlessly fold from outside to in, creating unexpected circulation spaces that are incredibly durable whilst striking and inviting. Colours derived from the surrounding vegetation inspired the material selection, with pre-weathered Jarrah cladding providing a subtle grey to the façade. The greyed timber instantly creates a house that appears to have long existed on its site, seamlessly blending into the salty scrub. This timber is bushfire-resistant, durable and low maintenance, an important consideration for its salt-exposed and fire-prone locale.

Abbotsleigh Sports and Assembly Hall displays a constant and carefully considered connection with its forest surrounds. A careful study of the blue gum high forest led to the retention of all significant trees which then became the inspiration for the range of timbers used throughout the building. The sports and assembly hall floor is predominantly used for basketball, badminton and netball. After much investigation, the flooring was considered to be the most durable on the market and also required less frequent maintenance than traditional oil or polyurethane finished floor surfaces. Consequently, a sprung flooring system was considered a fundamental aspect of the brief.

Internally, the European oak timber floor anchors the fluid roof canopy. Louvres seamlessly connect to the outside, capturing breezes and scent from the surrounding forest. The architectural intent was for the overall space to be to holistically wrapped in timber and plywood to provide an atmosphere of distinctive warmth.

Gipson Commons is a three level, above ground education building that incorporates timber panels to provide a backdrop to the colour of learning – natural and authentic. The use of plywood wall panelling promotes a calm building environment through its warmth and sound attenuation. As beautiful as timber is as a finish, it can perform a multitude of other purposes such as forming the sun shading externally as well as the acoustic attenuation internally on top of its already appealing aesthetic. Plywood has also been used in the joinery to the public spaces and stair balustrades. At ground level, this idea of acoustic attenuation through timber is epitomised in the baffle ceiling. Plywood panels of different finishes are arranged in a lattice-like formation to deflect sound in what is traditionally one of the busier and louder zones in buildings of this type.

Fluidity to Form inspired this design, and timber veneers were the catalyst for a concept driven by the patterns baristas create on a café latte. The selected veneers needed to be flexible enough to be manipulated into nonorthogonal geometry while being durable enough to withstand the busy commercial environment. As a result, Tasmanian Southern Blue Gum and Tasmanian Wattle Silver veneers were chosen for their physical properties. 3D modelling and laser cutting technology were employed to create the timber forms ‘sweep and motion’ throughout the site. Australian timber veneers join seamlessly to circulate, unfold and connect all of the functions of the venue while providing a journey through the historic Sydney interior. The contemporary timber form layers the existing fabric of the building; principally exposed brick, sandstone walls, wooden columns and old steel work, all serving the building during its many stages and are all integral to the rich, original tapestry.

The rammed earth structure and soft grey recycled timber surfaces are complementary and imbue the interiors with a unique quality. In this project, Blackbutt timber was chosen for external doors and windows over other materials for operational, detailing and aesthetic attributes. Timber frames can be incorporated in minimal abutment details, with seal details to suit. The typical window jamb was a custom hardwood section with protruding brass fins recessed into the rammed earth. Timber frames have thermal qualities that work with the passive thermal and solar attributes of the building. Passive solar and thermal efficiency is a primary design consideration.
