Our Sages teach us the great importance of the mitzvah of tzedakah and encouraged us to do so daily. The Lubavitcher Rebbe, of blessed memory, established a unique fund seventy years ago, which ensures that we perform the mitzvah of tzedakah—every single day of the year.
Make one contribution to Machne Israel’s Keren Hashana, in an amount corresponding to the number of days in the new year (383), and monies from the fund will be distributed on your behalf twice daily, before shacharis and before mincha, for charitable purposes.
As we begin the new year, contribute to the Keren Hashana daily tzedakah fund, for yourself and for all your family members.
With blessings

To every member of the Lubavitcher community: During this month of preparation for Rosh Hashonoh, the ”head” of the New Year, we fondly recall our Rebbe’s words that this is an especially auspicious time for strengthening our deep bond of Hiskashrus with the ”Rosh Bnei Yisroel,” the ”head” of the Jewish people and leader of the generation.
Our Rebbeim explain that an important way to strengthen Hiskashrus is by participating in the Rebbe’s activities and concerns, consequently, by supporting an organization that brings together a number of these activities, the Hiskashrus is greater and stronger . Such an organization is Kupas Rabbeinu, which seeks to continue many of the Rebbe’s activities and concerns without change from the way he would conduct them himself.
Every year at this time, the Rebbe would call upon us to contribute generously to help needy families with their extra expenses for the coming month’s many Yomim Tovim. This also coincides with the special emphasis during this month of giving extra Tzedokah, (indicated in the Hebrew letters of the word ”Elul,” as explained in many Sichos etc.), as a vital way of preparing ourselves for the new year and arousing Divine mercy upon us. See sicho in the Hebrew text of this letter.
We therefore appeal to every individual man and woman to contribute generously to Kup as Rabbeinu, enabling us to fulfill the Rebbe’s desire to help all those who anxiously await our help. The greater your contribution, the more we can accomplish. Please do not forsake them!
Your generous contribution to Kupas Rabbeinu will be the appropriate vessel for receiving the abundant blessings of the Rebbe, who is its Nasi, that you may be blessed with a Ksiva Vachasima Tova for a good and sweet year, materially and spiritually. May it help to bring the full revelation of Moshiach - our Rebbe - immediately now!
Wishing you a Ksiva Vachasima Tova for a good and sweet year, On behalf of Kupas Rabbeinu, R’ Samuel Malamud Groner family R’ Yosef Boruch Spielman
P.S. Of course, you may send to Kupas Rabbeinu all contributions that you would send to the Rebbe; all will be devoted to the activities to which the Rebbe would devote them. You may also send Maimad, Keren-Hashono (this coming year 5784 - 383 days), Vov Tishrei, Yud Gimmel Tishrei Magbis etc. to Kupas Rabbeinu
Important Note:

The Alter Rebbe said that the very davening in a shul of Chassidim can affect the nefesh, for when Chassidim daven in shul, they think about yichuda ila’a and yichuda tata’a. These holy thoughts remain in the shul and do not rise up. They can cling to someone who davens in the shul later on. So too, with learning Torah with “love and fear.” This is also true for the opposite situation. When a shul contains impure thoughts, they remain there and someone on the level of an “oveid Hashem” can feel it.
The mashpia, R’ Shmuel Gronem, related that the tzaddik, Rabbi Hillel of Paritch, would sense thoughts that were not good. When his student, R’ Sholom of Homil built a new house, he designated a room for R’ Hillel. He was always careful that nothing unholy should enter this room and that no person should enter it.
But, when R’ Hillel entered the room and prepared to daven Mincha, he called out, “There are disgusting thoughts here.” R’ Sholom was taken aback for he had been careful that nobody enter, but then he remembered that an army officer had come by and he had had to make the room available for him. The thoughts of the officer remained in the room and R’ Hillel sensed this.
(Lemaan Yeid’u p. 252)
The Baal Shem Tov had a simple Chassid
who was very G-d fearing. He supported himself by digging wells. He ate only bread, salt and water and never had meat. He was proficient in the Five Books of the Torah and knew Tehillim by heart. He barely knew the meaning of the words and in some places he did not know what it meant. He would review the words constantly as he worked and as he walked.
The Baal Shem Tov said about him, “In the upper worlds, they reckon with Hershel the Digger’s view.”
(Sefer HaMaamarim 5709, p. 87)
R’ Zalman Aharon once asked his father, the Rebbe Maharash, what the difference was between “ahava rabba” and “ahava b’taanugim.” The Rebbe said: Ahava rabba is like the love of Chassidim for one another. Ahava b’taanugim is like the Rebbe’s love for the Chassidim.
(Sefer HaSichos 5705, p. 91)
When the Tzemach Tzedek was in Petersburg in 5603, one Shabbos, during the meal, he began to sing. He sang for a long time and suddenly, in the middle of singing, he got up and began to dance.
The mashpia, R’ Shmuel Gronem, explained that at that time “ahava b’taanugim” was illuminated in him.

During the yom tov of Sukkos, we perform multiple mitzvos, we sit in the sukka, shake lulav and esrog, and more. Yet, the name of the yom tov is Chag HaSukkos.
QUESTION - Why is the yom tov called after the mitzva of sukka and not named after any of the other mitzvos of this yom tov, such as Chag Arba Minim?
ANSWER - The mitzva of sukka has a few unique qualities over the other mitzvos of Sukkos and is therefore chosen as the name of the yom tov.
1) The mitzva of sukka is superior in time; it can be performed from the first moment yom tov begins, until the last moment of yom tov. There is no limit as to how many times or for how long you can perform the mitzva of sukka!
The mitzva of lulav and esrog, however, only begins the morning of yom tov, and can only be performed once each day.
2) The mitzva of sukka stands out in the fact that it is performed with our whole body. Other mitzvos are done with specific parts of our body. Shaking lulav, giving tzedaka, and putting on tefillin are mitzvos we
perform with our hands; eating matza and maror, are mitzvos performed with our mouths.
3) Most mitzvos are connected to certain activities in our day; for example, we make brachos before we eat, wash our hands when we wake up, and before eating bread. The mitzva of sukka is relevant in all our daily activities! Everything we normally do at home, including eating, drinking, learning, and even playing and relaxing, are supposed to be done in the sukka!
Because of these uni que qualities of the mitzva of sukka, the yom tov is called Chag HaSukkos!
LESSON - The mitzvos of the month of Tishrei teach us lessons for the whole year ahead. The mitzva of sukka teaches us to serve Hashem in everything we do. We don’t only think about Hashem when we daven and learn, but even when we eat, play, or relax; we can think of Hashem by making a bracha before we eat and playing with ahavas Yisroel!
The haftarah for Simchat Torah is the beginning of the book of Joshua, which is the continuation of the events we had read about at the conclusion of the Torah. It begins: "And it was after Moses died..."
When we delve deeper into the haftarah, we begin to see how it connects with Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. It speaks about keeping and studying Torah and doing good deeds, loyalty and brotherhood.
The haftarah records the first communication from G-d to Joshua and the preparation before crossing the Jordan into the promised land, Israel.
G-d tells Joshua that the people would be crossing the Jordan, saying, “everywhere that the soles of (the Jewish people's) feet will tread, I will give to you.” He continues to tell Joshua what the borders of Israel are, and that no man will ever stand up against him. G-d will be with him just as He was with Moses. Now comes a statement that is repeated over and over again to Joshua, chazak v'ematz, “be strong and have courage.” G-d tells him this three times. First with regards to leading the people, then about keeping the Torah, and finally about going to war.
About keeping the Torah, G-d says, “Just be strong and very courageous to observe and do in accordance with all of the Torah that Moses My servant has commanded you. Do not stray therefrom right or left, in order that you succeed wherever you go. This book of the Torah shall not leave your mouth; you shall meditate therein day and night, in order that you observe to do all that is written in it, for then will you succeed in all your ways and then will you prosper.”
This message that G-d communicated to Joshua is a lesson to each of us, and connects to Simchat Torah, when we conclude the last parshah of the Torah and start reading once again from the beginning.
The Midrash tells us, that from the words, "This book of the Torah shall not leave your mouth," we learn that Joshua constantly had a Torah scroll with him. Rashi tells us that it was the book of Deuteronomy. When he completed the last words, G-d said, “chazak v'ematz.” Until this very day, when we finish reading a book of the Torah, we say “chazak.”
The Talmud tells us that there are four areas in which a person must strengthen himself. The first two are Torah and good deeds. The Talmud draws support from our haftarah. “Be strong” refers to Torah and “very courageous” alludes to performance of good deeds.
It is not enough to learn and understand. Rather, “you shall meditate therein day and night.” We have to take it to a whole new level, each according to his or her ability, making it part of who we are. This will allow us to have a deeper understanding of what G-d wants, and to know the inner workings of the Torah. “In order that you observe to do all that is written in it,” because you will find pleasure in doing it, now that you see the purpose in it.
Being the last day of our holiday season, Simchat Torah sets the tone for the whole year. That is why we have these themes stressed at this time, because these ideas of keeping and studying Torah, delving deeply into it, doing good deeds, unity, brotherhood, and loyalty to the holy amongst us, our tzadikim, is what fortifies us and enables us to do our mission.

Beef and Mushroom
Pastry Braid
tablespoons oil
1 and 1/2 pounds ground beef
1 package Gefen Puff Pastry, defrosted overnight in the fridge, according to package directions
3 teaspoons Pereg Kebab or Jerusalem Mixed Spices
1 can Gefen Mushrooms, roughly chopped
4 cubes Gefen Sautéed
Onions
Topping egg wash
Gefen Sesame Seeds
1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add in the ground beef and chop into pieces with a wooden spoon. Cook until the beef is browned on all sides. Add in the spices, sauteed onions, and mushrooms. Cook for an additional five minutes, or until most of the liquid has evaporated. Set aside to cool.
3. Meanwhile, remove the puff pastry from the package and cut in half. Place the second sheet in the fridge while you work with the first. On a floured surface, lightly roll out the puff pastry sheet to form a nice rectangle.
4. Transfer to a baking sheet lined with Gefen Parchment Paper. Imagine the pastry has three equal sections. Add half of the ground beef mixture, using a slotted spoon, to the center section. Leave a half-inch space at the top and bottom. Using a sharp knife, cut the two outside sections into eight one-inch horizontal strips just to the center section. Fold the top and bottom. Then, alternating sides, “braid” the strips over the middle section. Set aside and repeat with the second sheet of puff pastry.
5. Brush both braids with egg wash and sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired. Bake until golden brown, approximately 25 minutes.
