Accepting Individuality on the Crowder Team

We are all aware of the division and tension that can and is occurring in our communities, states, country and the world and even in our own families due to differences in personal and political beliefs. We are all entitled to our own beliefs and opinions. I believe no one has the right to take them away, but we are all also entitled to be treated respectfully.

As we are surrounded by so many differences and opposing viewpoints, it is critical to Crowder ’s success to continue to work together as a team on our job sites and throughout Crowder. We all have one common goal which is to provide our clients quality projects, safely and on time. When we do this, Crowder is also able to make a positive difference in our communities and in the lives of our employees.

To live our mission, Crowder needs people with varied skills and viewpoints. We all come from different places and experiences, and when we come to gather and use those experiences to serve our clients, the things we can do, and build are amazing and will be used for years to come.

Crowder is at its strongest when we use our individual talents while respecting other ’s talents and viewpoints. I am not expecting or asking anyone to like everyone you work with. What I am asking is to work to understand enough about your coworkers to allow us all to have a workplace where we are treated fairly and in a respectful manner. We all deserve a place to work where we feel valued. Let’s work together to make sure everyone knows they are important, and their differences are valued as much as their similarities.

Thanks for all you do for Crowder.

Company Safety Recognition - Not Possible Without Your Dedication

With this calendar year wrapping up at a rapid pace, I thought it would be appropriate to highlight a few aspects of safety recognition on both the company and individual levels.

This year, Crowder’s Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) program and your safety performance has been recognized by multiple organizations on both the regional and national level. For the fifth consecutive year, we were one of three General Contractors in the heavy construction division working over 1 million hours that received the prestigious Construction Safety Excellence Award (CSEA) presented by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America. The purpose of this national award is to recognize those construction companies across the United States who excel at safety performance. The selection process focuses on management commitment, employee participation, training, hazard identification and control, and program innovation. Our HSE awards received this year includes the following:

1. National AGC: Construction Safety Excellence Award

2. Associated Builders and Contractors: Diamond STEP (Safety Training Evaluation Process)

3. North Carolina Department of Labor: Safety Achievement (Gold Level)

4. South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation: Palmetto Shining Star

Obviously, the HSE recognition above is great and we all should have a sense of pride for being formally recognized for our safety efforts. This recognition is a true reflection of the dedication and professionalism exhibited by our crew members each day. As I visit projects across all divisions, it is obvious that our employees are Focused to Achieve Safety Excellence. The employees listed below have received safety recognition that was issued by their direct supervisor or a member of management between January 1 – July 31, 2024.

Byrd Park Reservoir Rehabilitation

The Byrd Park team is currently working through an unforeseen conditions challenge with the North outlet well to continue onto the main course of construction. Crowder’s team and subcontractors are in the process of modifying the West reservoir’s North outlet well from within the West tank, which is inclusive of installing grouted rod soil anchors, demolition of existing structures, and constructing new walls separating the North outlet well and West tank. The team is also continuing construction of new column spread footings, which will support the new roofing system. The excavation crew is working to install drainage pipe and backfilling the walls around the exterior of the tank. Once the North outlet well modifications have taken place, the team will move into the wing wall extensions and suspended slab of the North outlet well. The team will work to put the North outlet back online so the South outlet well can be taken offline and rehabilitated. The concrete crew will continue with spread footing installation and a new liner slab on the slopes of the tank perimeter. The excavation crew will begin installing storm drain and assist in the installation of duct bank around the exterior of the tank. All this preparation will take place for the new aluminum roof to begin construction in the coming months.

Stowe Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF) - Construction Phase

The Stowe Regional Water Resource Recovery Facility project is advancing well despite record-breaking rainfall. The Crowder/Garney JV team is advancing the civil and structural work, continuing wall and suspended slab pours at the BNR structure along with significant progress on the walls at both the filters and UV facilities. As we continue the progress structurally, we have started to transition to exposed mechanical and process equipment installation. The primary clarifier mechanism is complete, and we are advancing on the installation of the two final clarifier mechanisms. The electrical crews are completing the electrical duct banks north of the BNR structure along with the under slab of the primary sludge electrical building.

Looking ahead to the fall, the JV plans to complete the structural work on the RAS and primary sludge pump stations allowing us to complete the backfill around those structures. We will continue working on both yard piping and exposed ductile iron pipe. The electrical crews will move to the under-slab electrical conduit at the BNR electrical building and the duct banks south of the BNR. Work will begin at both chemical building 1 and the steam and water analysis system (SWAS) meter vault. The JV has also partnered with a local Charlotte Business INClusion (CBI) General Contractor to build both the administration and maintenance buildings turnkey. They have mobilized and broken ground on both structures. Working with them and numerous other CBI firms has allowed the JV to reach 12% participation within Charlotte’s local Minority, Women, and Small Business Enterprises (MWSBE) program for an Owner in Charlotte Water who truly values local utilization.

Round Robin

Providing our employees with the knowledge, skills and ability to safely perform their jobs is a hugely important yet satisfying undertaking. Professional development was on display at the Stowe Water Reclamation Facility project. A “round robin” safety training session was facilitated by foremen and superintendents. During this session, employees received training on critical safety topics to include crane and hand signals, extension cord inspection, equipment inspection, rigging inspection and ladder safety. This training event consisted of a series of the training topics listed, led by craft supervisors, and provided opportunities for employee engagement and direct involvement in our safety program. There is no piece more important in our safety program than our employees. The Stowe leadership team exemplified this tenet by conducting comprehensive, quality and RELEVANT training.

Back to the Basics

Crowder’s construction projects often involve complex operations requiring high levels of experience and competency. Although the technical aspects of construction work can be immersive and complex, safety does not have to be. During day-to-day construction tasks and general construction operations, the fundamental principles of safety, including the actions taken by employees and supervisors, are what keep Crowder employees safe and secure. The Heavy Civil division embraces these concepts and ensures that crews are doing their part in the form of planning, inspecting, and adhering to relevant safety procedures. Consistent, daily safe actions help to maintain the safety and security on our jobsites.

Lake Michie and Little River Raw Water Pump Station Improvements

Crowder Industrial is in the second year of work on the three-year Lake Michie/Little River Pump Station Improvements Project for the City of Durham. Work remained focused on the first site, Lake Michie, with work at the second site, Little River, having started late first quarter of 2024 on u/g duct bank and potable water service installations. Demolition work to remove old systems at Lake Michie and installation of a temporary by-pass pumping system remain in progress. The target is to have the temporary by-pass system online around the end of the third quarter this year for installs of the new permanent pumping system to continue. Crowder’s diving subcontractor, Crofton, continued work on the lake side of the dam installing new bar screens and gates for the temporary pumping system intake and reconstruction of concrete divider walls between existing intake bays. Challenges have continued to arise slowing progress as was originally scheduled; however, Crowder, EOR Hazen & Sawyer, and the City of Durham are constantly working on solutions toward keeping the project moving forward. The next steps for this project include the commissioning of the temporary by-pass pumping system at Lake Michie to allow for demo/installation of the new permanent pump systems and beginning the demo phase work at the Little River site inside the pump station.

CIC Fabrication Shop: Celebrating Safety Excellence at 2,200 Days and Counting

Although our goal is and will always be zero safety-related incidents, at our Spartanburg Fabrication Shop, the team has reached an impressive milestone: over 2200 days without an incident requiring attention beyond minor first aid. This achievement shows Crowder’s dedication to safety, which allows pride in safety excellence to be a fundamental part of the Fab Shop’s daily operations.

Safety is more than just a priority for our Fab Shop; it’s a core value. Their success starts on Day-1 with thorough training and education on safety expectations. Every team member is equipped with the knowledge and skills to identify and address potential hazards. Standardized training on the shop equipment and extremely knowledgeable foremen keeps everyone alert and prepared.

The Crowder Fabrication Shop thrives on a strong team mentality. They know that safety is a shared responsibility, and every individual has the authority and personal responsibility to stop work if they observe a safety concern or simply know a safer method to perform a task. This empowerment creates a culture where everyone feels accountable for their own safety as well as the safety of their team.

Our dedicated Fab Shop supervisors are the key to maintaining our high safety standards. Their passion for safety and their ability to manage a fast-paced work environment ensure that safety protocols are followed down to the finest detail. They lead by example, showing that safety is essential to our success. Although typically not necessary, our team of shop supervisors ensure that their individual teams understand that unsafe practices or performance of a task in an unsafe manner is simply not acceptable, and that progressive discipline is the appropriate action per Crowder procedures. The supervisor’s focus and sharing of this requirement is not and does not create fear, which could cause a lack of focus on the task. The focus ensures that the team knows their supervisor will follow procedures even when it could be uncomfortable. This creates an understanding and an appreciation for all our procedures to include proper enforcement of our safety policies and procedures.

While we celebrate this milestone, we emphasize the importance of reporting all incidents and near-misses. Our commitment to safety includes a transparent reporting system where employees are encouraged to report any safety concerns without fear of repercussions. This openness helps us continuously improve our safety practices. Our shop team members know that they should report all incidents, and this allows the shop to improve work practices, which ultimately makes for a safer work environment allowing everyone to go home the same way they come to work each day.

As we celebrate this significant milestone, we remain committed to continuous improvement. The goal is to maintain and surpass this safety record by working daily to enhance the safety culture that our shop team continues to preserve. Together, the team will continue to put the safety of the team first and foremost, which will allow for the continued success of all our fabricators, welders, engineers and supervisors.
