Concern and Complaint Procedure (or call 1-800-849-2966 and ask for Employee Services) to get your question answered, your concern addressed or your problem resolved.

Wellness is important to us!

We’re excited to announce that Crowder is providing eligible* employees with $250 to use for healthcare-related expenses!

How will I receive these funds?

Emails were sent earlier in June detailing how you will receive the $250 in wellness funds, which may vary due to your individual benefit elections. Funds will be made available within the month of June.

What are healthcare-related expenses?

This covers almost anything related to your health such as helping with co-pays at the doctor’s office, glasses and contacts, prescriptions, and even approved everyday hygiene and wellness products.

Where and when can I use these funds?

In addition to the doctor’s office and pharmacy, you may use these wellness funds at an approved FSA/HSA store or on approved FSA/HSA items at participating retailers. The FSA wellness funds are available for use on expenses incurred between 6/1/24 and 12/31/24.

How is Youturn Health different?

Youturn offers peer coaching, not therapy. A peer coach provides non-clinical peer support to help engage, educate, and support employees through issues such as stress management, mental health, substance abuse, and suicidal ideation. Often, peer coaches have been on their own recovery path, so they understand the stress and anxiety of what you’re going through. Youturn focuses on connection, “here and now” solutions, and offers flexible platforms such as phone, email, and chat options through the app.

Youturn Health is available at no cost to you and your family members. The program provides confidential access to a virtual support program with online education and a peer coaching support phone line.

Calls Creek Water Reclamation Facility 3.0 MGD Upgrade

On to Phase 2

Work for the Crowder team is ongoing at the 3.0 MGD expansion of the Calls Creek Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) in Watkinsville, GA. This ambitious project marks the second phase of our upgrade efforts, following the successful completion of Phase 1 in November 2023. The contract value for Phase 2 is over $17 million, and includes significant improvements to enhance the facility’s capacity and efficiency.

The expansion project involves the addition of a 1 MGD aerobic digester, complete with associated blowers and coarse bubble aeration. A new headworks structure is being constructed, featuring a center flow fine screen, a bypass channel with a manual bar screen, and a grit removal system. The effluent pump station will be equipped with three 150 hp vertical turbine effluent pumps and two 25 hp vertical turbine non-potable water pumps. Additionally, the existing equalization (EQ) basin will be upgraded to include fine bubble aeration, and a new 1 MW emergency generator with an automatic transfer switch (ATS). The project also involves the installation of new electrical gear, instrumentation, and controls.

Limited Space and Long Lead Times

Working within an operational facility and limited space for new structures posed significant challenges. To overcome the constraints of an operational facility, we engaged in detailed planning and close coordination with plant operations to minimize disruptions, scheduling necessary shutdowns and tie-ins around plant operations. The limited space for the new headworks structure required innovative solutions. We employed an expert blasting subcontractor for careful excavation of subsurface rock while maintaining the integrity of the existing structure. Multiple trench boxes were used to protect excavation

areas where trench sloping was not possible. Additionally, well points with a sedimentation collection box were set up to dewater the excavation and prevent contamination of Calls Creek.

Long lead times on equipment were another challenge we faced. To mitigate this, major equipment orders were executed early in the project. We maintained close communication with vendors and engineers to ensure timely submittals and coordinated lead times with the construction schedule to avoid delays.

Our strong relationship with the Calls Creek facility owner, established during a previous upgrade project in 2018, has been instrumental in securing this expansion project. The successful completion of Phase 1, on time and under budget, further solidified the owner’s confidence in Crowder, leading to the award of Phase 2. The shared savings from Phase 1 enabled the addition of owner-requested scope to Phase 2, showcasing the benefits of effective project management and teamwork.

Our team, consisting of 24 dedicated employees, brings a wealth of experience and a collaborative spirit to this project. Many team members worked on the original expansion in 2018 and Phase 1, fostering existing relationships with the owner and a deep familiarity with the plant’s processes. Weekly reviews of schedule, labor, budgets, and safety ensure everyone is aligned with the common goal of project success.

As Phase 2 progresses, Crowder remains committed to delivering exceptional results, building on our history of positive client relationships and successful project completions. We are excited to continue our work at the Calls Creek Water Reclamation Facility, enhancing its capacity and efficiency for the future.

Cosgrove Avenue Extension and North Hobson Improvements

Helping Business Thrive in North Charleston

The Cosgrove Avenue Extension and North Hobson Improvements project, valued at $57 million, is a key component of the South Carolina Ports Authority’s (SC Ports) ambitious Infrastructure Investment Plan. SC Ports has injected over $2 billion into port infrastructure to bolster the state’s thriving business sector. This significant project involves extending Cosgrove Avenue, which currently ends at Spruill Avenue. The extension will route traffic over new rail lines being constructed as part of the adjacent “Navy Base Intermodal Facility (NBIF)” project, which is also underway. This will eliminate a substantial portion of the existing McMillan Avenue at-grade crossing, facilitating the free movement of rail cars in and out of the facility.

The new alignment features a 1,032-foot-long bridge that spans the Frontier Logistics driveway, their private rail, and the four new rail lines for NBIF. The bridge design includes earthquake drains, 36 drilled shafts (78 inches each), 8,200 feet of 54-inch Modified Bulb Tee girders, 4,000 cubic yards of concrete, and 1.7 million pounds of reinforcing steel. Additionally, the project will enhance North Hobson Avenue with new turning lanes, an upgraded storm system, curb and gutter, sidewalks, and asphalt.

Around 75 employees, including subcontractors and Crowder personnel, are currently engaged in this project, which is situated primarily on the old Charleston Naval Base. This base, operational from 1901 to 1996, provided critical defense capabilities for the United States. Following its closure, portions of the base have been leased to various government and private entities, and community parks have been established on its grounds.

A standout performer on this project is Tommy Henson, a foreman who has been with Crowder for 50 years. Tommy’s dedication, teamwork, and respect on the job site are invaluable. He is proactive, always questioning with purpose, and contributes significantly to site safety. His extensive experience across various types of work provides the team with reliable and practical insights. Tommy is not just a leader; he is willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done, including grabbing a shovel when necessary. His presence has been a tremendous asset to the team.

A Hard-Working Crew
Current State of the New Surcharge Section
Weekly Safety Meeting

The project has faced several challenges, particularly regarding existing utilities, which have delayed the schedule. From the outset, it was clear that these utilities would pose significant obstacles, necessitating extensive exploration before starting production work. This included soft digs, potholing, and numerous RFIs to assist the owner in finding solutions to the issues. Moreover, the presence of existing businesses and traffic in the work area has demanded extra traffic control measures. With approximately 25 driveways in the project area, coordinating with businesses to ensure safe access for their employees has required significant traffic control and careful planning.

Despite these challenges, the project has been highly successful. Crowder has established a strong relationship with the South Carolina Ports Authority, collaborating effectively to overcome utility issues, subgrade challenges, and various design hurdles. Financially, the project continues to perform well, and we are optimistic about its ongoing success. We are proud of the progress we have made and confident as we continue work on this crucial infrastructure development. Daily Traffic and Existing Utilities Present Challenges

St. Stephens Motor Control Center Replacement

About the Project

The St. Stephen hydroelectric power plant in St. Stephen, South Carolina began operating in 1985. The plant is part of the Cooper River Rediversion Project (CRRP), which was authorized by Congress in 1978 and completed in March 1985. The CRRP was built by the United States Army Corps of Engineers to reduce dredging costs in Charleston Harbor. The rediversion minimizes sedimentation rates into Charleston Harbor, saving $14-18 million per year in dredging costs. The St. Stephen Powerhouse provides electricity for more than 40,000 homes, and the fish lift passes around 750,000 fish every year.

Still Feeling the Effects of COVID in Construction

Crowder was awarded the contract to replace eight Motor Control Centers (MCC) and power and control cabling to all MCC branch circuits and the MCC feeder cables. Crowder was awarded this project September of 2021, in the middle of Covid pandemic, which in turn promoted long equipment delivery dates and a slow-moving project on its own. Along with equipment and equipment submittal delays, submittal approval delays and the unknown effect Covid would have on this project. Construction did not really start on site until June of 2023. Eddie Lail formed his team after several months of submittals, approval of submittals and equipment FAT testing only to incur more delays at the plant during the demo phase of the first MCC. Contract scope included the demolition of existing feeder cabling and reuse of existing conduit/raceways. Conditions in a Hydro power plant built since 1985 are harsh to say the least.

Completed MCC #5 -This Provides Power to all HVAC Units In the Plant and Office Buildings

Completed Unit MCC #1 This MCC Feeds All Auxiliary Equipment Power For the Unit.

Overcoming Challenges

Shane Robbs and crew had their work cut out for them attempting to demo the old cable out of rusted corroded conduits. To top this off, the conduit had developed a salt-based scale on the inside due to the moisture-enriched environment of a Hydro facility and its vicinity to the Cooper River. With a lot of research and scratching of their heads, they found a solution to pour or spray into the conduits to dissolve this scale like substance and remove most of it, to allow the pulling out of the old cable. Once the conduit was internally brushed and cleaned by mandrels and swabbing, new cable would be able to be installed, but then another issue was brought to the attention of our team.

Existing drawings provided during the bidding phase and equipment procuring phase of the project did not match a single MCC bucket/breaker that would work with existing equipment. Control schematics needed to be redeveloped and with the unit down and outage schedule already tight, Eddie, Shane and Danny Moses started laying out and drawing new control schematics and rewiring most all of the new MCC buckets and red lining the existing drawings. This challenge was met head on by Eddie and Shane’s team and they got the unit back online. This job will be completed on time, thanks to the dedication of this hard-working crew.

Industrial Featured Crew: St. Stephen’s MCC Replacement

The crew at the St. Stephens MCC Replacement project had their work cut out for them. Many different factors, including COVID, caused issues getting this job underway, but the team took them all in stride. At one point, crew members worked long days for 21 consecutive days. The outage was completed on time and without any LOTO or safety instances, and schedule was met on the original date set, with no extension necessary. This task would not have been possible without the great work ethic and a committed attitude that this crew always has on any job, anywhere they go. The whole job will be completed on time and the Plant Manager, and his operators are very satisfied with the performance and dedication this Crowder crew has exhibited. Thank you for your hard work!
