As I write this, I’m in London where we’re having a heat wave. I can’t stop eating Twisters and you’ve never really done the London Underground until you’ve been on the Central line in 35 degrees heat. This year London’s been grey and overcast but tonight the city’s alive with the excitement of summer. There is, and I don’t think it’s just the Twisters talking, a sexy flirtation in the air. So this issue, while London’s been under a cloud, TMBMITW have been around the world, chasing summer. We’ve been to Miami, Sydney, Cyprus and back to London, hoping to bottle the essence of summertime along the way. We spent a week with cheerleaders in Daytona Beach, Florida, where for four days the men competed as fiercely as the women in the American Collegiate Championships. Then they partied on the beach, like it was Spring Break. We travelled to Los Angeles to meet with an American Football-playing set of twins with All-American dreams. We spent a stolen summer afternoon with designer Robert Storey in his Dalston Studio in London, a man living an aesthetically pleasing dream. And we travelled to Miami to shoot José, a skateboarding Venezuelan who dived into the sea to cool off after our shoot. All these men of summer are here, and more, as well as on our social pages Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. I hope you enjoy and, like me right now, be in need of a cool down afterwards.

Shy guy Jeff’s all smiles in Miami

To photograph, Dr. Jeff is exceedingly shy, which is a surprise when you see just how confident his Instagram account is. It’s the latter, chilled kind of mindset the Russian born, Miami based professional says he brings when he’s trying to take a break from the day job. ‘I hit the beach where I can wear as little clothes as possible,’ he laughs. That day job is no laughing matter: a postdoctoral fellow, Doctor Jeff is working in developing potential cancer treatments. The work he says, can be stressful, but when you get good findings everything is great all of a sudden.’ And even though Jeff’s not a clinician, he’s also good in a crisis. ‘One time I witnessed a lady collapse from heat stroke and everyone around was completely confused and not sure what to do,’ he says. ‘I thought Miami people would be better prepared for such situations. I poured some ice water on her and she was back on her feet.’ Paging Dr. Jeff… @DrJeffim

into the deep -25-

Diving into the Atlantic with one spirited Venezuelan photography gregory vaughan words william maher

Venezuelan born and raised, José moved with his family to Miami, when he turned 18. Coming to Miami wasn’t an option, it was a must, he says. ‘The economy was really down, a lot of the Venezuelan natives had to leave the country as it had became increasingly hard to maintain a comfortable lifestyle there. We had a country with a lot of potential but it was turned upside down and divided by its politics.’ But swapping Venezuela sunsets for Miami’s opportunity has proved a blessing for José, who writes, sings and dances. He’s creative but he’s practical about it, saying of his work: ‘I, of course have a job, but I’m so scared of a 9-5 being all there is for me. I’ve seen so many people chasing money and wasting their lives in the mean time. I’m trying my absolute hardest to centre my career around what I love - arts.’ In between times, José lives the Gold-Coast dream. He’s vegetarian, works out at least four times a week, two hours at a time. If that sounds like more hard work, there’s a fun side too. ‘I do a lot of outdoor activity - I long-board everywhere. I got rid of my car and now I never stop moving. It’s really practical for me boarding in Miami because I can just strip down and cool myself off at the beach whenever I need to. I’m a big fan of not just working out my body, but my mind too and I do that with meditation. It really helps me relieve stress and I believe that alone will do wonders for personal appearance… and sanity.’ He does, however, keep his chops in tip-top condition with one ingredient. ‘I do use coconut oil for absolutely everything, it’s raw and natural and it’s so effective.’ We broadly move from beauty regimes to beautiful men. Who is José’s most beautiful man in the world? ‘My father,’ he says simply. ‘He is my hero, my best friend and the perfect example of patience and hard work. He supports all of my life choices, and he does so without question. I feel extremely blessed to be his son.’ @iamjosebaptista

Robert Storey builds brands from his Dalston studio

Robert Storey’s mates are always asking him to be a one-stop Ikea for them, building beds and storage units and coffee tables from scratch. ‘I always get “can you wall mount my plasma TV, will you build me a bed?” from my friends,’ the sought after set designer tells TMBMITW in his sunlit Dalston studio, an impeccably dressed space with lots of greenery; a bookshelf stacked with inspirational tomes and a nice line in primary coloured vices for the woodwork. ‘But I have built a lot of the furniture in my apartment myself.’ No wonder they’re queuing for Robert’s services.

-MEADHAM KIRCHHOFF-

The London-based designer is the go-to for fashion’s high command when they want to create a set in which to show off this season’s clothes. He set up StoreyStudio in 2009 after graduating in Fine Art: Sculpture at Central Saint Martins and has since built up a client list that includes Christopher Kane, Louis Vuitton,

inspired take on set design. The team, under Robert’s guidance, bring a bold, graphic aesthetic to the smallest still life shoot or largescale catwalk shows and they have gone as far as designing permanent shop floors and furniture design. And if you want to get your head around what a fashion set and spatial designer does, Robert recommends Googling his work with Nike, where’s he’s created pop-up spaces that put the swoon into the swoosh. ‘And yes, I did get a free pair of Nikes,’ he laughs. @StoreyRobert. Team mascots, we feel for you guys. Every other collegiate girl and boy at the cheerleading championships on Florida’s Daytona Beach gets to build pyramids to Hi-NRG tracks wearing tight-fitting, bodypopping college colours. When they’re not fiercely competing for towering trophies in the resort’s exhibition centre, they’re prepping in the Bandshell, Daytona Beach’s iconic amphitheatre on the sand. There, they perform leapin’ loras in swimwear, bringing it in bikinis and eight packs. And you, the team mascot, are just a guy dressed as a duck, dancing like a loon.

But even mascots get granted down time, and once the four days of National Cheerleading Association of America Collegiate Championships come to a close in April each year the party really high-kicks off at Stuntfest, a wholly unofficial ‘happening’. Here cheerleaders, fuelled by the adrenaline of the past few days of competition, shake it off, ditch Gatorade for proper drinking and turn up the volume on dance music played through a cheer filter (which basically means a hell of a lot of whooshs, wows and donks in the mix). ‘Stuntfest came about so people who come to have a chance to prove how sick they really can be,’ Isiah from the GymTyme All Stars tells TMBMITW, ‘And boom you have one of the most amazing parties that cheerleading has. Just raw talent coming together to do what we love most.’ Or as his teammate Eric puts it simply: ‘Stuntfest is our Spring Break.’ And everyone – even our furry friends – gets to do this bit in swimwear. Just don’t tell the College Dean.

How did you get into skate-boarding ? I just picked up a board one day and I had fun screwing around so I made it my life! I’ve been skating for about six years. Have you ever broken anything? I like to play smarter not harder. But then again, I sometimes like to play hard too. So I guess I get lucky - most of the time. One time I was skating this bowl back home and I slashed the coping F’s for my first time. I got scared and jumped off, which you’re not supposed to do, but I ended up landing back on my board and I slipped out and hit my head. How do you get around? I live relatively close to a lot of parks and my city is small so it’s easy to get places. I also drive a motorcycle. Do you get annoyed with tourists taking your photo as you’re skating? No I love the attention and I enjoy meeting people, so it’s no bother. Where do you see yourself in five years time? Hopefully I’ll have turned pro and be travelling. What’s your back up plan? I don’t know! I can only follow my dreams right now so I’m not going to worry. How would you describe your skating style? I don’t know, I used to think I skated like an idiot [laughs] but I guess I just have fun. What do you love about skateboarding? I am as free as I can possibly get. I can fly.
