FROM OUR CEO

Thank you for joining us in the endeavor to serve our Denver neighbors.

Inhardship.thisreport, you’ll see more about the metrics and numbers that reflect our work in 2021 across departments. More importantly, you’ll read stories and see faces of the Leaders, Alumni, and others who make this work worthwhile.

Sincerely, JASON JANZ, CEO & Co-Founder

Dear CrossPurpose Family, In 2020 we launched a five year plan to operate four CrossPurpose locations, serve over 1,000 graduates, and see 2,025 men, women and children escape poverty by the end of 2025. This year, we took our biggest step yet towards completing that goal.

Local churches, partner organizations, and government officials stepped in and made it possible for us to welcome the first class of Leaders onsite at South Metro in September.

Across the board, CrossPurpose graduates succeeded financially more than ever this year. In the past twelve months our graduates earned our highest-ever average wage of $$19.78/hour. 2021 was also our biggest fundraising year yet. In fact, we’ve almost tripled our revenue since 2017 despite enduring two years of pandemic

Our first expansion was a South Metro CrossPurpose location in Englewood, CO. At the beginning of the year, the checklist for the launch was daunting. We were still conducting online/hybrid classes at our Northeast Denver location due to the pandemic and we had yet to secure the staff and space to make a new location

During the pandemic we began asking ourselves if we were truly helping people escape poverty. To answer this question, we studied the financial impact of entry level careers on our neighbors, many of whom were previously 50%unemployed.oftheAmerican workforce makes $35,000 or less annually. That means that over 84 million workers need earned income and government benefits like food stamps, child care subsidies, and tax credits to make ends meet.

HOW WE’RE GROWINGF

Unfortunately, low-wage workers often face a benefits cliff (also known as the "cliff effect") when they receive public benefits from the government, earn a raise, and then discover that they make too much money to receive the Thebenefits.bigchallenge

JUAN PENA Chief Innovation Officer & Co-founder ˜

is that no one knows where the cliff begins, or when it will end, because it is individualized for each person, and based on various factors.

To help CrossPurpose Leaders prepare for and navigate this cliff effect, we created a financial planning tool that allows Coaches to model their Leaders’ financial picture and estimate their net annual income. Clients and Leaders can then explore how potential financial decisions impact this economic outlook. We will begin using this tool with our own Leaders in 2022 and plan to raise more philanthropic capital to continue to develop the tool for use by organizations nationwide.

A ALUMNIPROGRAMFELLOWSHIPFOR

In addition to creating the financial planning tool to help Alumni navigate their finances, we began planning for an Alumni Fellowship to guide our graduates towards their next personal and professional goals. Once many of our graduates attain stability, they start to dream about what could be next. If they aim to pay off debt, buy a home, pursue higher education, and more, we will provide mentorship and support to help them get there.

Today, Angel has a new career in the medical field; she works as a Transition Health Navigator with UC Health. She uses her medical knowledge to help patients advocate for their own health. Even more importantly, she can use her own background to connect and build trust with the clients she works with. She says, “With my current position, I’m able to help people navigate the healthcare system. I’m able to use my past experience with addiction, trauma, incarceration, to help others change their lives if they choose to.”

In the early years of her children’s lives, Angel Soto had the full-time job of stay at home mom. When life circumstances made her a single mom several years later, she knew she had to go back to work. When she started applying for jobs, Angel found herself with a significant skills gap in her resume due to the years spent at home. Until she found CrossPurpose, she feared had missed her opportunity to build new skills for a career.

While attending online CrossPurpose classes in 2020, Soto found that career-readiness involved more than just building new skills. “Personal Development helped me work through personal and emotional barriers that were holding me back from shining,” she recalls. With a new confidence in herself, Angel graduated from CrossPurpose with a Medical Assisting certificate and found work as a phlebotomist.

ANAVIGATINGNEWFUTURE

Being able to prove that to my kids, I can’t express how important that is to me.”

Through it all, she says, “I want to prove to (my children) that even if you come from bad circumstances in your life you can always turn things around. If you work hard, good things can come from that.

In her career and role as a mom, Angel can now focus on helping others dream of a better future. Instead of worrying about making ends meet with each paycheck, she can expand her children’s horizons through extracurricular activities. With her new and improved salary, she plans to leave low-income housing and buy a home for her family.

CHANGE MADE POSSIBLE PARTNERSBY 09

A NEW MODELFUNDING NPX, a company transforming the way nonprofits are funded by explicitly linking capital with results, selected CrossPurpose as one of seven nonprofits nationally qualified to receive up to $1 million in "Pay For Success" investments. We participated in months of analysis and due diligence to demonstrate our success in training and equipping Leaders for long-term, growth-oriented careers. Not only did this award allow us to fund an entire class of Leaders throughout their time in the program, it connects us with a national network of social impact investors and expands our philanthropic advisor portfolio.

“Being an Ally was an incredibly humbling experience. The culture of CrossPurpose creates an accelerated journey of being authentically connected to one another. I appreciate the way in which relationships are formed without the pretense of popular society.”

One of our primary channels for connecting with prospective Leaders is referrals from community partner organizations. In 2021, Community Partners referred 261 applicants! This year, we were excited to strengthen our partnership with Denver Housing Authority and connect with DHA residents who are ready to grow their careers. 20 of their referred Leaders were accepted into the program!Alliesvolunteer to meet with Leaders once per week on Wednesday nights for the entirety of a six month class. This year, 81 Allies committed to our four Denver classes and one South Metro class. Also,Assisting.we’re excited about a new career training partnership with CareerStep. They will support us in offering hands-on training in three new career tracks in 2022: Pharmacy Technician, Dental Technician, and Patient Care Technician.

We curate the career training tracks we offer to the needs of the job market. This allows us to equip Leaders accordingly for success in indemand careers and industries. To address the rising minimum wage and challenges of inflation, we increased our first job wage target to $18.00/hour. We also increased our emphasis on benefits in evaluating the jobs we recommend to Leaders. In a post-pandemic world, we’ve seen an increase in medical field career opportunities. 47% of our Leaders choose to train for and enter the medical field in career tracks like Medical Assisting, Medical Billing & Coding, CNA, and Medical Administrative

As one of the few programs in the Denver Metro Area that offers a development-based solution to poverty, we want to continue to grow our model that empowers and uplifts the people we serve. The long-term security of an endowment will allow CrossPurpose to sustainably scale impact, bringing families out of poverty in Denver for decades to come. An endowment is a gift to support CrossPurpose that lasts forever. An amount equal to a percentage of an endowment’s market value is distributed annually to the CrossPurpose program designated by the endowment donor, and the remaining balance is invested prudently to maximize its longterm growth. Year after year, distributions from endowments continue to support the intended CrossPurpose programs.

We’re excited about our progress so far and look forward to where we’re going in our five year plan called The City Beautiful: Reimagined. What only existed on paper two years ago is now coming to fruition thanks to the hard work of our team. In 2023, we plan to launch our third location in partnership with the Bridge at Revive Church in Arvada. The Bridge will also be home to wraparound services like a health clinic and daycare, reducing barriers that could keep our neighbors from starting career training. We are still in the early stages of dialogue with partners in Aurora about how we can serve our neighbors there. We see an unmet need for community resources there and are excited to provide a place for more accessible skill training in 2025. As we grow, so does our need for funding and resources. We’re working ahead of that need by diversifying our revenue streams. Starting in 2022, we’ll explore options for earned revenue while expanding our philanthropic revenue through a monthly giving program, corporate sponsorships, an endowment, and more.
