Lisa McSherry has been a practicing witch since the 80s and thinks she might be starting to get the hang of things now. She’s published five books since the turn of the century and looks forward to continuing to do so until she transitions into her next incarnation. Magic for the Resistance* Rituals & Spells for Change

Calling upon revolutionary feminists and radical magic practitioners across time, including Allen Ginsberg and those who hexed Hitler in the 1940s, Hughes has built a concise, powerful magical toolkit for modern practitioners. Whether it is through one of the fifteen spells, advice on working magic in public, or a guide to Guerilla Magic, this book suggests grounded ways to keep forward momentum against fascism. Magic for the Resistance provides vital advice on building community and self-care (magical and non) to nourish the spirits of overworked and overwhelmed activists and freedom fighters.

An Interview with Michael M. Hughes:

Q. What originally inspired you to write Magic for the Resistance?

A. I was inspired to write Magic for Resistance after the incredible response to the Trump binding spell in 2017, and the rituals and workings that followed. The community of people who became part of the “magic resistance” just kept growing, and it was clear there was a demand for more ways to use magic for social and political causes. I also felt the need not to just chronicle the movement, but to explore the use of magic and witchcraft as a tool against oppression through the ages. And I was shocked at how common that turned out to be.

Q. What would you like to say to readers who may not have been aware of this book when it was first published, but are finding it now?

A. For anyone who missed the first edition of the book, or who could not find copies after it went out of print, I am delighted to see this revised and updated version coming along at exactly the time it is needed again. While much of the material is timely and focused on our current sociopolitical crises, authoritarianism, bigotry, and hate never go away, so this tookit for magical activism will always remain vital.

Q. What part of exploring this topic again has been most impactful to you?

A. I have been most humbled and touched by how this book has spawned a new genre of spiritual activism and helped so many people stay committed, empowered, and focused on making the world a better place. The planet and its inhabitants are facing the most pressing existential crises in human history—if we can’t evolve spiritually, we are lost.

Q. What are you most excited about with the new edition of Magic for the Resistance?

A. I am excited that this new edition comes at the time it is most needed. So many things are under attack—democracy, the rule of law, social justice, immigrants, the LGBTQIA+ community, reproductive rights, and the most vulnerable and underserved of our fellow beings. Not to mention the assault on our planet that is putting all life at risk. Magic for the Resistance is a manual for action, but also for changing our collective consciousness to bring forth a better future— because we are running out of time.

Q. Where can readers find you? How can they get in touch?

A. Readers can find me on social media (currently I am most active on Bluesky) or via my website, michaelmhughes.com. I’m also available to speak to groups, online or in person, and I teach tarot at theartofmagicaliving.com. I love to hear from readers, so please reach out!

Patricia DeSandro (BonaDea Lyonesse)

Patricia DeSandro, known as BonaDea Lyonesse in the Pagan community, is first a wisewoman/hedge witch, then an elder high priestess of the Circean line of Romano-Celtic Wicca. She started drawing goddess figures and speaking with spirits at the age of three, much to her Christian family’s dismay, in the early 1950s. After college, Patricia and her husband and their small children subsistence-farmed during the back-to-the-land movement in the 70s. The next twenty years were all about honing her natural abilities into useful skills under the tutelage of some very unique teachers. It started with an Amish farmwife, then a Cherokee elder, two wisewoman healers, a Southern Appalachian conjureman, an Ifa priestess, and the elder high priestess/founder of the Sisterhood and Brotherhood of Wicca, known as the Witch Queen of Toledo. As BonaDea, she founded the Circle of the Sacred Grove Temple of the Old Religion and the Lyonesse line of Romano-Celtic Wicca in 1999. She serves her community through her mediumship, healing work, workshop presentations, lectures, writings, and public rituals throughout the country. She is active in the Multifaith Council of Northwest Ohio as a representative of the Pagan community. Patricia is also known for her storytelling character, Granny Root. When she is not speaking to spirits, writing, presenting, or storytelling, she is painting. Patricia is focused on building a legacy preserving the magic of the world seen through animistic eyes for her great grandchildren and all future generations.

Polish Folk Magic*

Ancestral Lore & Traditions of the West Slavs

Polish Folk Magic is an introductory guide into the folk beliefs, seasonal practices, living ancestral traditions, and authentic folk magic of the West Slavic peoples. Joanna Tarnawska (she/her) is an animist, folk practitioner and psychologist based in the mountains of Lower Silesia, Poland. Her approach is rooted in and informed by living bioregional traditions and lore, historical craft derived from the early modern period, as well as anthropological and ethnographic studies of pre- and post-Christian traditions of the West Slavs, bridging the ancient and the early modern through animism and folkloric witchcraft. Joanna is the author of numerous articles published in Femme Occulte magazine, where she continues to write about Slavic folklore, myth, and magic. Polish Folk Witch is Joanna’s ongoing online project, aimed at educating the Slavic diaspora, promoting Polish culture, teaching courses and facilitating group studies on a broad variety of subjects pertaining to Polish folk magic, animism, and traditional folkloric witchcraft.

An Interview with Joanna Tarnawaska:

Q. How has your own background in Polish Folk Magic influenced your process in writing this book?

A. As a native, born and raised in Polish culture, our customs, traditions and folklore are my life. Growing up in rural Silesia, we were immersed in living folkloric customs from a very young age–celebrating the spring equinox with the burning and drowning of Marzanna, building elaborate flower altars around the village for Corpus Christi, weaving wreaths and jumping through bonfires on summer solstice, tending to graves and honoring the dead every All Hallows Eve, or placing hay beneath the tablecloth on Christmas Eve–to name a few. Traces of Polish folkloric traditions and magic have always been an integral part of my life, thus shaping who I’d become. It was in the stories of the land, and the agrarian customs that I found deep nourishment, solace and existential meaning. Despite my background in psychology, I was always more drawn towards the simpler wisdom of the folk and the land, towards more embodied ways of tending to the spirit and the soma. This propelled my growing involvement with animism, folklore, herbalism, gardening, ecological justice, and living as close to the land as is realistically attainable in the modern world, which naturally became embedded into the way I practiced my craft as well. Over time, as the world opened up, I developed a deep passion for sharing our customs and traditions with people of the diaspora who longed for connection with their ancestral roots, yet so little was readily available to them. Inspired by the countless stories of folks who reached out to me over the years to generously share their family tales—stories of resilient, brave folk, forced to flee their homes and migrate beyond the ocean for survival—I decided to write this very book. For all those whose ancestors were scared and forced to hide their heritage and language in order to assimilate, get by and survive—to ensure that their children and their children’s children would have a better, safer life than what they had back home. Our shared ancestors and their stories kept me company and occupied my mind constantly throughout the writing process. It is in their memory and honor that I wish for our heritage to be preserved and made accessible to their descendants.

Q. You explore the calendar of Polish Folk Magic in depth in the book. What part of the calendar is most important to you and your practice?

A. As you age, you become more and more acutely aware of the importance of honoring the agrarian cycles as an integral whole—you accept how interconnected and equally important they are, how we shouldn’t be picking things apart as much and only choosing the comfortable bits, and how that teaches us humility towards life and the greater forces that guide our path. While the Polish folkloric calendar is infinitely rich with diverse expressions of the cycles, I find myself especially fond of the seasonal feast days dedicated to the many faces of folkloric Marys. As the reader will learn in my book, folkloric Marys are but faces for the local land spirits and old deities of agriculture and seasons. Their customs and traditions guide us through the entire vegetative cycle in a way that brings us closer to the land, and especially to the plant allies around us. To this day, the Marian cult in Poland is very much alive and on Marian feast days people can be seen praying and leaving offerings by wayside shrines, blessing their bouquets of herbs or tall beeswax candles for use in apotropaic magic and healing. Because both my grandmothers were devotees of Mary, I have always felt drawn to these celebrations and they remain an important part of my practice. Because they are so deeply linked with the seasonal changes around us, they mark when migrations of birds are observed, or when to sow or harvest certain plants— which is very helpful in gardening. They also mark the dates when I traditionally consecrate items and materia, they inspire me to visit their many sacred shrines in nature and teach me how to give back to the ecology around me.

Q. What part of Polish Folk Magic are you most excited to share?

A. I am extremely excited about the chapter featuring Polish folk magic in practice—detailing authentic ways of doing the work, complete with a rich selection of historically documented spoken formulas, charms, ways of protecting, cursing, undoing, cleansing, enchanting and much more. While it may seem pretty straight-forward, it has actually taken me years of research and perusing through obscure old tomes of inconspicuous books and research papers to find and curate as many preserved pieces as I could. To this day, they remained largely scattered across a plethora of publications—ranging from ethnographic studies, linguistic reconstructions, anthropological research, to field records of old sayings, songs, tales and pieces of folklore. As a practitioner, I initially compiled them for my own use over the years, as I always wished a resource

like this existed for folk witches of the Polish strain. I’m very proud of the collection of historical practices and formulas that I was able to curate especially for this book, and I hope that it will open doors for more resources like this becoming available in the future.

Q. What are the most surprising things readers will learn in Polish Folk Magic?

A. I imagine many may be surprised to find out about the syncretic, dual faith aspects that are deeply embedded in our folkloric culture and magic. Western witchcraft communities are accustomed to books and content being largely neo-pagan and rooted in modern reconstruction, often whitewashed and sterilized of cultural elements that survived to this day under the nose of the oppressors, such as the Catholic church. Polish folk magic, like many other cultural folk practices, exists on the intersection of old pagan beliefs and the syncretic folk Catholic elements. People may be surprised to learn that our folklore and agrarian traditions are filled with practices where veneration for old spirits of the land coexists with folkloric saints or Marys—and that practicing folk magic is inherently heretical, making alliances with spirits of seemingly opposing domains, speaking prayers backwards or blessing tools and herbs in church for magical purposes. This doesn’t mean that a folk witch worships monotheistic gods or adheres to what the church says—on the contrary. This heretical, often blasphemous act of hiding witchcraft under the guise of the practices of the oppressor is how our ancestors dealt with their harsh lived realities, and how our folk magic survived to this day. I believe that if we want to engage with the real, living practices of our ancestors, it is crucial to keep an open mind and set aside the romanticised, sterilised version of what we think our ancestors did and believed. The reality is much more complex, liminal and surprising than one might think.

Landscapes influence our cultural practices as much as the people who create them, and magic is no stranger to this effect. Magic is omnipresent in our world, but many people who practice don’t call it “magic.” Thanks to stigmatization, disavowal, and punishment for magical work, as well as christocolonialism, many non-Wiccan or Pagan practices have gone unseen in the contemporary occult community. Crossed Crow Books’ first-ever anthology, The Crow’s Collection of World Magic, collects several essays by writers and practitioners around the world about their magical practices, histories, and communities.

An Interview with Tom Benjamin:

Q. What inspired you to write The Modern Fortune Teller’s Field Guide?

A. Honestly, I had the idea that I wanted to write a Bird by Bird (Anne Lamott’s brilliant, famous-among-writers guide for not going crazy and/or embracing the crazy that’s already there). As I worked on it, I realized I wasn’t quite “ready” to do that, mostly because it involved getting a little more personally revealing than I like to. But many of the chapters had really exciting things to say and I realized about a third of the way through the first draft that what I was really doing was writing a field guide based on my actual experiences “in the field” as a reader. That felt really exciting to me—a book about divination that wasn’t really about learning how to read. Something that was about being a reader. And then, and I’m really lucky and grateful for this, the pages poured out.

Q. What advice would you give readers just starting to explore divinatory practice?

A. Play. Experiment. Enjoy! Be curious. Oh, we’re so hard on ourselves when we’re learning. We disdain students for some reason, as though it’s the students’ faults they’re not born knowing how to do everything. We want to go from newbie to pro in no time. We don’t want to admit we’re students, we don’t want to be looked down on because we’re “still learning.” But the real pros are the ones who are always “still learning,” who never settle, who never believe they’ve reached the finish line. Have fun learning—forever! Seriously. I spent too much of my life treating learning experiences like auditions and I never had any fun. Don’t do that. Tarot and many other divination devices began as games. Play with them!

Q. What are you most excited to share with readers in this book?

A. So much. I’m really proud of this book and that’s not an easy thing for me to admit. I’m excited for people to reconsider who and what fortune tellers are—and why that term is so misleading. I’m excited to participate in the conversation about reclamation and resurrection of fortune telling. I’m excited for folks to experience perception shifts. I’m also excited to share some of the chapters that don’t necessarily

seem like they’re about divination, but are—including a long (and, I think, really helpful) exploration of the human ego! I also do something I’ve never done before: I share my “meanings” for the cards. I use quotes there for reasons that will be clear once folks read the book.

Q. What was the most eye opening experience during the process of writing this book?

A. I think I understood deeply while writing that what we do as readers—whether we charge money or not, whether we read for others or not, whether we consider ourselves fortune tellers or not—fits into a larger … sorta de-centering of establishment? If that makes sense and doesn’t make your eyes roll out of your head with pretentiousness? Any time someone does a reading or gets a reading or digs into witchery or chaos magic, they’re quietly-yet-powerfully saying, “I am no longer interested in following the arbitrary rules forced on me by a society too informed by some really toxic stuff.” One of the reason this book is so focused on what I half-jokingly refer to as “engaged fortune telling” is because the fortune teller, the witch, the shaman, whatever language you apply to it—these folks were always on the margins and frequently flouting some major societal norms. There is a rebelliousness in practicing these things, there is a reclamation of personal power and connection of divinity, and there is a middle finger even to the fundamentalist “logic” that says there is no magic. And while that sounds massively self-important, what I hope it does for folks is allow them to really take this work seriously in these of recognizing that it really matters. It’s not the only solution. But it matters.

Q. Where can readers find you? How can they get in touch?

A. My website, with blog, class info, and a handful of free e-books is www.tombenjamintarot.com. You can find me on YouTube—along with more than ten years of tutorials and reviews— www.youtube.com/@thefoolsjournal. And you can hang with me on Instagram @tombenjamintarot. Say hi! I’m shy!

Andre Jooste

Andre Jooste stands as a dedicated practitioner of magick, having traversed the realms of mysticism throughout his entire life. His profound expertise and unwavering commitment are particularly prominent in the domain of Galdr, a form of magick deeply rooted in Northern traditions.

As a Vitki, which denotes a skilled sorcerer and Northern shaman, he has ventured deep into the heart of Nordic folk magick, embracing its ancient wisdom, symbolism, and rituals.

One of Andre’s primary areas of specialization lies in Rune Craft, where the intricate art of runic symbols and their mystic significance is wielded with precision and reverence. The runes, both as a system of writing and as potent sources of magickal power, are channels through which Andre navigates the worlds of divination, manifestation, and communication with the spiritual realms. In his journey along the winding path of magick, Andre Jooste delves into the realm of sigils, symbols imbued with powerful intent and purpose. He crafts these symbols to manifest his desires and intentions, forging a connection with the ethereal forces that shape our world. Ancestral veneration holds a place of profound importance in Andre’s practice. It is through this sacred reverence for his forebears that he taps into a wellspring of wisdom, guidance, and protection. By forging strong bonds with his ancestors, he maintains a spiritual connection to his lineage and, in turn, cultivates a rich source of strength and insight.

Lee Morgan lives on a communal homestead on kunanyi/Mt Wellington, where he creates sanctuary for other weirdos, raises books, people, and ideas from the grave. He has had novels and non-fiction published by Collective Ink Books, Three Hands Press, Witches Almanac, and Rebel Satori. Highlights of his career have involved speaking about his books at Watkins Books in London, receiving an Australian Post-Graduate award where he got paid to research, and participating in The People’s Library artwork in Tasmania. Having survived an enormous tumour, where surgeons warned his intellect might be impacted, and a series of further complications, Lee is currently busy filling the fresh room in his skull with new brains. His time is taken up by research, working on the property, and writing a kind of Folk Horror that cross-pollinates in hybrid, monstrous ways with other art-forms. He is greatly blessed with an incredible support network, especially in his immediate coven brothers and sisters. And with the presence of a kelpie rescue dog named Clementine, who doesn’t perform any of the working dog jobs one might have hoped for, but is loved despite this fact.

The Dragon Rune Oracle Deck

& Guidebook

The Dragon Rune Oracle is an oracle deck dedicated to connecting and working with the energy of the ancient and powerful Dragon collective overseen by the Queen of Dragons, Tiamat. The swirling mists of the Dragon's breath can provide insight and information to help the reader navigate their path through this lifetime and its challenges. This deck, created by Kieron Morgan, contains 28 cards and tells the story of the cyclical world of the Dragons, from their inception within the chaos of Ratanen to their battles to find magic in themselves in Sha’an. They travel onward to the peace and balance of Kaegos and the ultimate knowing of Nanen, reflecting our own personal journeys and challenges.

The Avian Oracle

The Avian Oracle brings the reader into the world of birds; their uniqueness and the special affinity humans have with them. For thousands of years birds have epitomized freedom and served as a symbol of the soul. Because they have been associated with some of the most powerful deities and sometimes represented the Divine, it is no surprise that they touch the soul and bring meaning to people’s lives. The book provides background material for understanding the long, historical association humans have with birds. Regarded as messengers of gods and goddesses, birds were believed to provide information about everyday matters through the ancient art of ornithomancy and many forms of divination. From Greek and Roman army generals and rulers to ordinary fishermen, birds served as guides that could help in many aspects of life. From the Druids, the Anglo-Saxons, and Germanic tribes of Northern Europe, to medieval Christian theologians and Jewish Mystics, birds were an integral part of beliefs and practices. Working with The Avian Oracle aids in uniting the personal with the mystical and magical; the mundane with the sacred.
