Does color help you?

Each section on this 2 page spread shows one of our 10 colours in the Visual Stress range. Is one of them more comfortable for you?

What is visual stress?

The term ”Visual stress” describes a range of difficulties that some people experience when viewing text for long periods. It is a problem that is often associated with (although not exclusive to) dyslexia.

Visual stress is thought to result from specific wavelengths in the color spectrum over-stimulating certain parts of the visual cortex, disturbing the perceived image of black text on white background. Changing the colored background to a tint that filters out the disruptive wavelengths can dramatically improve aspects of visual perception involved in reading and writing.

When a person has the right tint, attention span, reading speed, fluency and comprehension can all improve. Research has shown that around 20% of the population suffer to varying degrees from visual stress, and could benefit from reading through - and writing on - color.

Visual Stress Quick Check List

Many sufferers don’t realise that their experience isn’t “normal”. So how do you spot those who are experiencing symptoms of visual stress?

This checklist isn’t exhaustive or infallible, but is a useful tool to help you spot the children who might benefit from coloured resources. Watch out for the ones who

m Experience increased difficulty reading after an initial period of 5-10 minutes.

m Lose their place easily when reading, often skipping words or lines.

m Frequently blink, rub their eyes, and look away from the page.

m Keep moving their head or body restlessly, or move closer to or further away from the page.

m Track with their finger

m Screw up their eyes at a page of text.

m Experience problems copying from the board.

m Avoid reading.

m Read slowly and haltingly

m Yawn or seem to tire quickly while reading.

m Seem particularly sensitive to bright lights, especially fluorescent lighting.

m Experience eye strain/discomfort/pain when reading or doing computer work.

m Regularly suffer headaches and/or migraines.

Reading rulers, overlays, or tinted lenses?

Symptoms

Visual stress symptoms vary, but can include:

Ÿ Movement of print (words appearing to “jump” or move on the page)

Ÿ Whole lines of text may appear to move

Ÿ Blurring of print

Ÿ Letters seeming to change size

Ÿ Doubling of letters (example 1 right)

Ÿ Letters fading

Ÿ Patterns appearing

Ÿ Illusions of color blobs moving across the page distracting the reader or obscuring the words

Ÿ White "rivers" appearing to run down the page where the white background, as opposed to the black text, has become the dominant image perceived. (example 2 right)

Ÿ Swirling effects appearing in the text (example 3 right).

For anyone with visual stress, tinted spectacles can offer the best solution. However, assessment and lenses can be expensive, and many children do not want to wear tinted glasses to school. So often the best choice is between reading rulers and overlays.

An extract from 2019 research carried out by psychologists from Birkbeck College University of London, comparing the two solutions on children aged 4-8. The study found that

Ÿ A page overlay increased reading speed by up to 38.34%,

Ÿ A duo reading ruler increased it by up to 31.54%.

Ÿ Children with the most overt signs of visual stress preferred the reading rulers, and after three months more children preferred reading rulers to overlays. The full study can be found on our UK website, www.crossboweducation.com.

Do we say visual stress, or visual difficulties?

While we recognise that not all the visual difficulties that can be supported by the use of colored overlays or tinted paper, and that this is particularly important in the area of diagnostic assessment, it remains true that the most commonly encountered visual-perceptual difficulty that affects reading is the hyperexcitation of the visual cortex that scientists have termed “visual stress” and which can be alleviated by use of the appropriate overlay or paper .

Are visual stress and dyslexia connected?

Visual stress is often called visual dyslexia. However the two difficulties are separate and someone can have visual stress without having dyslexia. The link has probably arisen because the two difficulties often co-occur (about 35% of dyslexics also have visual stress). Therefore, it is important to not only assess individuals who have Dyslexia for visual stress, but anyone who may struggle with reading. See the Visual Stress quick check list on the opposite page for signs to look out for in Visual Stress.

*Crossbow tinted Exercise Books are currently not available in the USA.

Why purchase overlay resources from Crossbow Education?

1) Our colors are carefully and scientifically chosen from research carried out by a professor of visual science at a leading UK university who advised us personally for many years while we developed our visual stress product range. Their selection is based on analysis of the color preferences of thousands of optometry patients who have benefited from tinted vision, and of the colorspace measurements that create the optimum number of useful colors when they are combined.

2) All Crossbow’s award-winning colored reading resources are made from PET, which is recyclable and also clearer than PVC. Most, if not all, of the cheaper overlays and reading rulers that are now available are made from PVC, which cannot be recycled and is scheduled to be completely banned in Europe by 2030.

3) All our overlays and reading rulers also have a scratch-resistant coating as well as a peel-off protective layer. In addition, PET is a harder plastic than PVC. Most surface damage to overlays, especially the softer PVC ones, occurs when they are scraped across desks and tables, which inevitably happens in everyday use. Our products are designed specifically to withstand this.

4) Once an individual has found “their” color, it is usually the only one they need. As specialists we stock packs of overlays and reading rulers in each of our colors to meet everyone’s individual requirement. Because you won’t have to keep throwing away the leftover colors that you don’t need from a cheap assortment pack, you will soon be spending less money, not more. And you’re going to be kinder to the environment as well.

5) You can buy the full assessment kit (see p. 9) for our colors to identify the individual needs of all the children in your school who could benefit from reading through color.

6) We are experts, founded in the UK by an SEN teacher in 1993, and we know about the visual difficulties that often come with dyslexia (and without it too.) We designed the original Eye Level Reading Ruler back in 2004. We don't sell twig lights, pharmaceuticals, plumbing accessories, or seafood tools, which are among the non-educational materials sold by other vendors who just see reading difficulties as another market they can profit from.

Who are we?

Crossbow Education Corp is the US subsidiary of the award-winning UK Company Crossbow Education Ltd, founded in 1993 by SEN teacher

Bob Hext. Bob used to design resources for his dyslexic students because he couldn’t find what he was looking for on the market at the time, and found that other teachers wanted them too. Since then Crossbow has won three national and one international awards for their products and customer service. It remains a family business, which Bob and his wife Anne still run, employing 16 people. The US Corp was founded in 2008, and is a fully fledged American business, holding its own stock in Vienna VA, employing American personnel and paying US taxes.

What is our relationship with Phonic Books and DK?

The founder and the main authors of Phonic Books used to be SEN teachers and were customers of Crossbow before they started on their own publishing journey (and aren’t we all glad they did?). Crossbow was one of their very first distributors, both in the UK and the USA, and Bob and Anne have known them personally for over twenty years. Last year the company Phonic Books was sold to Dorling Kindersley (now part of Penguin Random House), but the same authors and artists still produce their lovely material. Because of the new relationship between Phonic Books and DK, Crossbow now has access to a wide range of publications which we are now gradually adding to our own selection - starting with the fabulous levelled Super Readers.

How did we get into colored overlay resources?

Bob and Anne designed the Eye Level Reading ruler in 2004, when we had the idea of putting an opaque strip (duo ruler) or a tracking line (plain ruler) across a tinted mini-overlay, and it has since spawned many copies - some quite good, some terrible. We started working with one of the leading researchers in the field, Prof Arnold Wilkins of Essex University, soon after that, to ensure that our work was in line with academic research. Our inexpensive little invention has done a lot to increase public awareness of visual stress and how easy it is to change a life by giving a child the right color to read through, and we are proud to be, directly or indirectly, behind so much reading success.

I hope you’ve enjoyed browsing through our US catalog. Check out our website www.crossboweducation.us for full product details. If you need a W9 or you have any questions, please email us. If you’re an old customer, please note that we have moved from Birmingham AL to Vienna VA : our new address is below. Incidentally we’re planning to be at the IDA Conference in Columbus Ohio on Oct 12-14. If you’re going to be there, do come and find our booth!
