Sixty years of advocacy This year marks sixty years of continuous operation by CropLife Australia, representing the best of the Australian plant science industy.

On 14 September 1955, CropLife Australia officially commenced as the Association for Agricultural Chemical Manufacturers of Australia and has continually operated since then as the peak national organisation for the plant science industry. In that time, CropLife Australia under all its guises has significantly contributed to Australia’s agricultural sector through strong and effective advocacy for better agricultural policy and regulation, as well as developing and implementing world-class industry stewardship programs.

Today, CropLife’s members represent the leaders of the plant science industry, which annually directly underpins $18 billion of agricultural production for the Australian economy, employs thousands of people across the country, and plays a crucial role in the productivity, sustainability and competitiveness of Australia’s farming sector.

It is an appropriate time to reflect on the significant contribution that CropLife and our members have made through advocacy and world-class industry stewardship.

The work of CropLife is crucial because of how important our member companies’ work is to the nation’s farming sector.

The plant science industry plays an essential role in equipping farmers with modern innovations for a more productive, environmentally sustainable and profitable agricultural sector.

CropLife has a tradition of constructively working with both sides of politics at federal and state levels to ensure our industry is able to continue to effectively support Australia’s farming effort. That tradition extends to CropLife proving itself a genuine thought leader in its contributions to public policy solutions for Australian agriculture.

CropLife has always advocated for independent, scientific evidence-based regulation. This advocacy has earned CropLife its place as a trusted partner with decision makers, working collaboratively across the agriculture sector to help establish good public policy initiatives and regulatory environments for Australia’s farming future.

Our Resistance Management Strategies and the award winning Pollinator Protection Initiative, which includes the world-first smart phone app BeeConnected, are examples of this ongoing world-leading commitment.

Court decision confirms the tradition of coexistence While the recent decision by the Court of Appeal of the WA Supreme Court to uphold the original finding of the trial judge in Marsh v Baxter, which rejected the notion Mr Baxter had any liability for the organic decertification of his neighbour’s farm, is a victory for common sense and cooperative farming, the conflict is result of unworkable, unreasonable and internationally inconsistent organic marketing rules.

The decision confirms the tradition of coexistence of farming methods

by Australian farmers. Whether it be traditional, organic or modern

agricultural systems, farmers have always been best placed to make decisions as to what is most appropriate for their property and their business.

Australia’s current organic marketing rules have been incorrectly interpreted by some certifiers, behaving more like activist organisations, to enforce an unnecessary ‘zero tolerance’ for the unintended presence of GM produce. This approach puts Australia completely out of step with organic standards around the rest of the world, including Europe, and potentially places relationships between farmers and their neighbours in completely unnecessary conflict.

Zero tolerance does not exist in nature and thresholds are a long accepted and

well managed concept in Australian agriculture. There is no scientific basis for zero tolerance and no reason other than anti-GM activism by some organic certifiers.

Australia needs an agricultural regulatory environment that ensures all farmers can choose which crops they can grow on their own property, whether they farm using organic, traditional or modern methods. The Marsh v Baxter appeal decision reaffirms the foundation of cooperative farming, regardless of farming method.

What would the festive season be without plum pudding and good cheer?

You never have to imagine it because of Australia’s plant science industry and the great work of our farmers who produce the Australian vine fruit, wine grapes, apples, almonds and flour that are necessary for plum pudding and wine.

Fruits and nuts are highly susceptible to a range of fungal diseases and insect pests, all of which are effectively and sustainably managed with crop protection products.

The $4 billion worth of Australian fruits and nuts produced by Australian farmers annually is 100% attributable to the use of crop protection products according to a

2013 Deloitte Access Economics report. Furthermore, $17.6 billion of all of Australia’s agricultural output can be attributed to the use of crop protection products.

IARC report is misleading, misunderstood and misreported

All crop protection products undergo rigorous testing and risk assessment before they can be sold on the market

The International Agency for Research on Cancer’s (IARC) recent classifications of seven pesticides as ‘possibly’ or ‘probably’ carcinogenic to humans are misleading and confusing claims based on the assessment of limited existing data to identify a potential hazard, without assessing the risks associated with exposure.

The seven pesticides have been added to a list of ‘possibly’ or ‘probably’ carcinogenic substances and activities that includes aloe vera, coffee, red meat, pickled vegetables and being a hairdresser or carpenter.

This simplistic classification of hazard is in stark contrast to the comprehensive scientific, evidence‑based assessment by

the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority, in addition to other well respected international regulatory agencies in, Canada, Germany and the USA who also approved the safety of these pesticides.

In direct contradiction to the IARC’s classification of the active substance glyphosate, the recently published EU peer review by the European Food Safety Authority concluded that glyphosate is unlikely to pose a carcinogenic hazard to humans.

Regulatory authorities evaluate a much more extensive range of scientific studies, including key studies not considered by IARC, to assess the hazard and the risk of exposure using risk management in real world conditions. The pesticide registration process involves years of data collection and comprehensive evaluation before approvals are granted and a product can be sold on the Australian market.

So what do the IARC classifications really mean? They only tells half the story — it suggests what could happen but it doesn’t indicate how likely it is to happen. It’s the equivalent of saying that a rock could kill you but not pointing out that to do so it probably needs to be dropped on your head from a great height. Pesticides, such as glyphosate, in their end product form and used in accordance with instructions for its registered purpose, are safe to use because the actual risk has been assessed and measures taken to prevent or minimise exposure. The seven pesticides, including glyphosate, are among 940 agents reviewed by the IARC and found to pose some level of theoretical ‘hazard’.

Only one substance, a chemical in yoga mats, has been classified by IARC as not carcinogenic.

Classifying crop protection products in a misleading manner has the potential to derail important medical research and cause worker confusion about such an important issue as worker health and safety.

Hazard vs risk — what’s the difference?

Every day, we are exposed to risks and hazards. While it may sound preferable to avoid them, it is simply not possible to avoid all risks and hazards as they are present in nearly every action in our lives. That is why mitigating and managing risk is the most effective approach to safety. Understanding the difference is essential when it comes to effective regulation.

A hazard is something that has the potential to harm people, including objects and processes. A risk is the probability that a hazard will harm an individual. Hazard doesn’t change but the risk changes enormously depending on how a hazard is mitigated.

Coming into contact with 240 volts of electricity is a deadly proposition to most life, including humans, however, the humble power point reduces the risk of exposure to negligible levels, therefore allowing the safe use of many of life’s creature comforts despite the hazard.

however the risk to humans is nothing if they are not in the water with the shark.

With agricultural and veterinary chemicals, the risk of a hazard may be effectively mitigated by formulation, packing or prescribed uses of the product. As a result, hazard based statements may be confusing for users as they inappropriately highlight a negligible risk. A risk-based assessment by an expert technical regulator is superior to a hazard-based assessment.

Information provided to users should be clear, specific and relevant to users to ensure compliance and the health and safety of workers.

Crop Biotechnology

WA farmers support the right to choose A new website, www.farmerchoice.org.au, has been launched to support the repeal of the Genetically Modified Crops Free Act 2003 to ensure Western Australian farmers have access to new innovative products and technologies needed to produce high‑quality food in a safe and environmentally sustainable way.

CropLife Australia, with the support of the Pastoralists and Graziers Association of Western Australia and the Western Australian Farmers Federation, has developed the website to facilitate WA growers and farming supporters being able to more easily contact their local MPs and relevant ministers with messages supporting the repeal of the Act. Western Australia is a global leader in modern agriculture and securing future access to GM crops will allow WA farmers to become more productive and environmentally sustainable. Repealing the Act will reduce red tape for farmers, consumers and the state as a whole.

West Australian farmers have planted an increased amount of GM canola every year since its introduction. Growers

are turning to GM canola varieties in greater numbers because of its impressive yields, effective weed control and the increased demand and market acceptance.

The 260,000 ha of GM canola planted in Western Australia in the 2014 season resulted in a direct benefit to those WA growers of over $12 million. Over 337,000 ha of GM canola was planted in WA this year. New varieties of GM crops are being developed that are healthier, higher yielding and resistant to pests and environmental stress.

There is no need for entirely unnecessary legislation that deters adoption of agricultural innovation. WA farmers having the freedom to choose what safe and approved crops to grow is the best way to protect their rights.

Community attitudes to GM changing

A recent report on community attitudes shows that the majority of people support GM foods

A recent report ‘Community Attitudes to Gene Technology’ commissioned by the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator found that support for GM crops and foods depends on knowledge and perceptions of regulation and safety at a given point in time.

Researchers found that analysis of survey responses and previous academic literature shows that an individual’s attitude towards GM crops is correlated with their knowledge of the broad scientific consensus about the safety of GM crops or the evidence-based scientific regulation by expert regulators.

The report demonstrates that when people are given credible scientific evidence and facts, they support GM crops and foods. The report found that technology deniers are more likely to be

opposed to GM foods and technology supporters are more likely to be in favour.

While activist groups continue to ramp up their campaigns of fear, mistrust and scaremongering in respect of new technologies, it is unsurprising that the community continues to show concerns.

These politically driven misinformation campaigns threaten to reduce choice for Australian farmers and lead to political and societal opinions that may run counter to society’s best interests.

The report also showed that there is greater support for GM foods in the Australian community than there is opposition. It must remain a priority of anyone committed to improved and more profitable and environmentally sustainable farming to encourage informed debate on agricultural biotechnology through the provision of credible, balanced, science-based information.

ChemClear® celebrates milestone For the last 12 years, thousands of chemical users have relied on ChemClear® to dispose of their unwanted agricultural and veterinary chemicals.

Over this time, the program has grown to become the most successful stewardship — or closed loop — waste disposal program operating in Australia.

ChemClear® collections help neutralise the threat of chemical waste from harming local communities, the environment and Australia’s trade opportunities.

Collections are made across the country on a needs basis or via two permanent collection facilities in Sydney and Melbourne. Waste holders register their agvet chemical products to be collected, resulting in a regional or state‑wide pick‑up being scheduled once a threshold has been reached.

To date, over 100 collections across six states have transpired, culminating in a milestone 500 tonnes of obsolete rural chemicals being retrieved for appropriate disposal across the country.

“When ChemClear® was first established in 2003 as a pilot, we thought the take up from agvet users might be slow. Boy, were we wrong. The booking line grows each day with more and more product being registered,” said Lisa Nixon, who has been the National Program Manager since its inception. “The program has been a fantastic initiative that has succeeded year on year, and along the way we have gained excellent support from industry, grower organisations and state governments.”

How plant science is helping farmers fight world hunger Innovation in modern agriculture has played an important role in helping farmers to reduce hunger around the world.

Since the Green Revolution in the middle of the twentieth century, farmers embracing plant science have been a crucial part of the fight against world hunger, which has seen the amount of people suffering from hunger halved between 1990 to 2015.

With a predicted world population of 9.6 billion by 2050, the world must increase food production to meet this rapidly growing demand. At the same time, it is anticipated that wealth will grow considerably for billions of people currently living in developing countries, leading to a larger and more diverse diet.

The plant science industry provides, through innovation and technology, the tools and products farmers need to rise to this challenge.

Modern crop protection products provide pest management solutions that prevent the loss of 50 per cent of the world’s food crops annually.

Scientists around the world have not only developed food crops that are more resistant to drought, heat and pests, they have also used genetic modification to create crops that have increased nutritional value.

Crops with increased nutritional values could improve health outcomes for millions of people around the world. The World Health Organization has reported that about 250 million preschool children are affected by Vitamin A deficiency. Providing those children with Vitamin A could prevent about a third of all deaths that occur under the age of five, meaning that the lives of 2.7 million children could be saved.

Given that almost half of the global population exists on a diet consisting mainly of rice, one innovation promises to help farmers fight malnutrition. A not-for-profit initiative by the Rockefeller Foundation has seen the development of Golden Rice, which is designed to produce beta-carotene, a precursor of Vitamin A, in the edible part of the rice plant.

With the world’s population growing by up to two hundred thousand each day, farmers using plant science innovations will be vital to help meet the United Nation’s ambitious goal to end world hunger by 2030.

Farmer incomes double in Honduras: Pest control plays key role Over 30,000 farmers in Honduras, the second poorest country in Latin America, have significantly increased their yield and income thanks to improved pest management techniques and good agricultural practices.

In Honduras, 60 per cent of the population live below the poverty line. For a small-scale farmer, growing a healthy crop can be the difference between a life of prosperity and life in poverty.

CropLife Latin America has partnered with the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) ACCESO project to work with farmers to prevent and mitigate the ongoing problem of pest and disease outbreaks on their crops.

Emiliano Domínguez, a small-scale farmer from Intibuca, Honduras, grows strawberries, maize and potatoes. He explains how USAID–ACCESO helped lift his family out of a life of poverty.

“Around six years ago, an attack of aphids destroyed my plot. I lost all the money I had invested because the damaged fruit and vegetables could not be sold. I lost around 50,000 lempira, (US$2,000),” he says. “When ACCESO arrived, that is when my life changed,” he adds.

With increased production of high-value crops, such as strawberries, Emiliano has

been able to pay for a new house for his family of five and increase the amount of land he farms six times over.

Under the partnership, the Honduran Industry Association of Agricultural Health and Fertilizers (AHSAFE Honduras), a member of CropLife Latin America trained more than 120 USAID– ACCESO field officers as ‘Master Trainers’ who in turn delivered teaching to the Honduran farmers.

Accensi Director, Mr Alan Yu, has announced that the replacement for retiring Chief Executive Officer, Dean Corbett, will be Paul Barber. Paul is an experienced and successful senior executive possessing high level experience in all facets of the agricultural industry within Australia, New Zealand and Asia. Some of the key executive roles he has held include Group General Manager, Elders Limited; General Manager, Australia Incitec Pivot and General Manager, Strategy and Business Development AWB Landmark.

The 2015 Youth Ag Summit had more than 100 delegates from 33 countries

Nufarm Australia is this year celebrating 60 years of service to Australian growers.

This year, Nufarm launched its companywide Sustainability Strategy. The strategy is focused on delivering upon the company’s commitment to sustainability. Details of this, along with performance from both Australia and overseas is detailed in the company’s Sustainability Report available from the Nufarm corporate website.

The foundation of the partnership is a commitment to contributing to a sustained future for Australian agriculture by delivering valued knowledge, particularly within the context of insect pests, and coupling this with innovative products and services. cesar®, a Melbourne based science, technology and research organisation, will assist Adama in the development of a new knowledge sharing platform that promises to be a simple, practical and trusted solution for the sharing of agriculture knowledge.

Bayer and the Future Farmers Network recently hosted the 2015 Youth Ag-Summit in Canberra.

One hundred young leaders from 33 countries came together to share perspectives and find answers to the question “How do we feed a hungry planet?” During the Summit, delegates created the Canberra

Youth Ag Declaration, a global call for action to help solve the pressing issues facing modern agriculture and food security. The declaration was presented to the UN Committee on World Food Security in Rome in mid-October.

Sumitomo Chemical has appointed Sam Hewavitharana as Research and Development Biologist for the northern region, based in Bundaberg.

“With three new product registrations due in 2016 and more coming down the pipeline, the trial workload is ever increasing”, said Doug Paton, Sumitomo Chemical Research and Development Manager. “While we continue to use the services of contract researchers, the additional knowledge gained from in-house work is of enormous value to our entire team and therefore our customer base, as we have seen since employing Peter Cole into a similar position in the southern region.”

Cameron Clarke has joined Arysta LifeScience as Marketing and Business Development Manager for Australia and New Zealand. An industry professional with over 20 years’ experience in sales and product management, Cameron comes to Arysta LifeScience from Cheminova. In this newly created role, Cameron will be responsible for strategic business planning, marketing and communications planning, including portfolio management and new business development. Cameron will be working closely with Michael Caldwell, Head of Sales ANZ, and his team to deliver Arysta LifeScience’s new product portfolio.

Author and journalist Mr Jon Entine delivers an address to the National Press Club

National Press Club Address by Jon Entine World renowned author and science journalist, Mr Jon Entine, recently delivered an address to the National Press Club of Australia. Mr Entine spoke about the danger of the myths surrounding modern innovations in agriculture and how embracing new technologies will lead to a brighter future for farmers and the world.

The address was well received by an audience of industry partners, foreign dignitaries, journalists and academics.

Mr Entine is a senior research fellow at the Institute for Food and Agricultural Literacy at the University of California and Visiting Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.

He is also Executive Director of the Genetic Literacy Project, a biotechnology and genetics outreach organisation that reports daily on the nexus of human and agricultural genetics, media and public policy.
