The last year has certainly been challenging for the Cromwell College community and whilst we have not been as adversely affected as southern residential colleges or endured hard lockdowns and College closure, we continued to navigate the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic albeit behind face masks for a period of time. Throughout all of this, it has been truly humbling to experience the support of our incredible community, especially when we had a number of our students in isolation and quarantine.

We began the year with a full cohort and as the oldest Fresher there were indeed mixed emotions of excitement and trepidation in ‘experiencing’ the many Cromwell traditions.

With many of our returners having missed out on their time at College last year, and with the eagerness of 104 Freshers, there certainly has been great enthusiasm amongst our students to really make the most of their time within our welcoming, vibrant, and unique student community.

But while many ‘normal’ aspects of College life returned, we still needed to manage changing restrictions and the greater impact of online learning. Cromwell prides itself on being a community which nurtures young minds and provides opportunities to explore new ideas, however, as students grapple with the limitations of the ‘zoom classroom’, the value of a ‘complete’ residential College experience has become more important than ever. In the current university environment, the intentional social interaction has been eroded and the sport, cultural, service, social and academic opportunities afforded our students cannot be underestimated, and in fact, becomes one of the driving forces behind parents supporting their young adults’ desire to experience College life. A Bright Future This has been a most encouraging year, with prospects of a bright future.

CHAIRPERSON'S REPORT

As we have cautiously made our way out of the major lockdown of 2020 our students have seized hold of the opportunities presented to them, with high academic results and strong participation in College activities.

The positivity in all quarters has been a very real demonstration of “Crommie ticker”.

It was so good to see Cromwell full again this year. Applications for places for 2022 are significantly greater than at this time in 2020 so once again we anticipate running with a full house, with some disappointments from students who have left their applications to the last minute.

Principal Ross Switzer and his wife Jenny rounded off a decade of leadership at the beginning of 2021. Our new Principal, Simon Armstrong with Kylie, took up where Ross left off. They have had the support of an outstanding staff team which has made the transition as easy as possible Simon is popular with the students and has the confidence of the staff and, as the year has progressed, has made his presence felt.

Professor Polly Parker Associate Dean (Academic) Faculty of Business, Economics and Law, joined the Cromwell Board.

Dr Al Jury, Chief Human Resources Officer, is the University of Queensland’s new appointee to the Board.

After many years of devoted service, Dr Janet Porter left our Board of Governors. Professor Polly Parker, Associate Dean (Academic) of the University’s Faculty of Business, Economics and Law has stepped in. Dr Al Jury, Chief Human Resources Officer, is the University of Queensland’s new appointee to the Board. Both have fitted in well and are already making a positive contribution.

Flicking through COCA News, it is easy to see some of the work of our Marketing & Advancement Manager appointed this year, Symantha Liu, who has enthusiastically joined our staff team.

A major function of the Foundation is providing bursaries to students in need of financial support; more this year than previously. It is a sad commentary on recent economic times that applications for bursaries have risen each year, highlighting the vital role the Foundation plays in the inclusive ethos of Cromwell.

Work has started on our new tutorial rooms and administration extension. This three million dollar project is the first major building development since the Begbie building in 2011. It is due to be completed in February 2022, in time for the new residential year.

Our new tutorial rooms and administration extension respond to the needs of Cromwell College as we look to the future.

An increasing number of students are taking advantage of the tutorial program which is continuing to expand rapidly and has far exceeded any space which can be made available. While we have previously on several occasions reorganised spaces to cater for a growing staff, our administration block has never actually been extended since Cromwell opened in 1954 so the additions are not before time.

The sense of vitality and community at Cromwell are a continual joy and we should all be proud of the year’s achievements.

From the Cromwell College Foundation Cromwell community doubles down for UQ Giving Day A total of 60 separate donations were gratefully received from across the Cromwell community, including students, parents, alumni, staff and board members, as part of the UQ Giving Day in October.

More than $70,000 in funds from our community were matched by UQ as part of this initiative, effectively doubling our own efforts.

This is a fantastic result for the Foundation, and our sincere thanks goes out to all donors. These funds will enable us to offer more bursaries into the future.

Supporting students The bursary program remains the focus of the Foundation Committee, and is designed to keep the unique Cromwell experience open to as many students as possible. The program is

only possible today by virtue of generous donations and contributions made in the past from our community.

This year the Foundation was especially pleased to be able to offer a total of 19 bursaries.

We continue to work collaboratively with UQ in delivering their Young Achievers Program, which accounted for 2 of the 19 bursaries we offered.

The bursaries were spread between first year and returning students for whom, without assistance, the option of living at Cromwell would not be possible.

Change to the Foundation levy For a very long time, possibly over a decade, the Foundation levy has remained unchanged. It has been a reasonably small amount of $300, levied once on each new first year student when entering college.

The funds raised by the Foundation from the levy is significant in terms of its annual revenue which also includes new donations and income from past donations that has been invested.

To be more equitable the Foundation Committee, with the support of the Board, has decided to expand the Foundation levy to all students. This had been scheduled to roll out this year but was delayed with the advent of COVID-19 alongside the freeze in admission fees. It will be done gradually, so that first year students in 2021 will be the first to pay the levy a second time in 2022.

This is a small but important step in ensuring the bursary program remains secure and sustainable well into the future. We hope those paying their levy appreciate how important their contribution is to strengthen the social fabric of the college.

event and show with, what we like to call, their “Crommie Ticker”. A huge highlight was when our underdogs rugby 7s girls convincingly beat Emmanuel College, and the rush of excitement when everyone ran on the field to cheer and celebrate.

College Events And not to forget our social events this year, organised by our Social Convenors, who have taken on huge responsibility this year with all the social events that took place. Funky costumes were worn during Miniball, the carpark was filled to host Cromwell’s biggest event Open Bunker, and country music was sung at the top of our lungs on our very own lawn during one of Croweek’s events, Splendour on the Astro. The events certainly did not disappoint especially our Ball which celebrated an Arabian Night's theme.

We also ran a few fundraising events this year such as World's Greatest Shave, Clean Up Australia Day, and Do It In A Dress.

Everyone who donated deserves a huge shoutout, and a special mention to everyone who helped raise around $8,400 for the World’s Greatest Shave.

Overall, myself and the Executive team have worked very hard to ensure we have been able to provide for the students despite all the Covid lockdowns and restrictions which took place throughout the year. I would like to acknowledge and thank each team member who has worked tirelessly to ensure we have had an amazing year.

I would also like to give a special thanks to all the Cromwell Staff and all the unrecognised time, effort, and knowledge you all put into this place. Without you, the college would certainly be a different place. And finally, a special mention to our not so new Principal, Simon. You have brought a new perspective to the College, and we are all privileged to have you. You have certainly already made quite a positive impact.

Finally, I would personally like to thank Cromwell and all the people I have met along the way. Cromwell has provided not only me, but every single person who steps foot in this place an opportunity to grow and experience new things. I have been very fortunate to live at a place like Cromwell, and it is not a memory I am likely to forget. Thank you Cromwell, for an amazing three years.

Hear the Lion Roar!

It's been another fantastic year in the sports arena with lots of 'Crommie ticker' on display. Overall, in 2021, we saw a number of standout performances, and our support culture continued to grow in strength.

Congratulations to Cromwell fresher, Rohan Hickey who won the UniSport Australia, Virtual Distance Running Championships, Half Marathon!

In the ICC championships, Badminton was our clear standout sport this year, with the women’s team winning and the men’s team placing second.

Men’s basketball placed second, after a tight final game against Emmanuel. On the Hockey field, our boys placed third, while our girls came fourth in Tennis.

In October, a combined Sports and Cultural Awards evening was held in the Dining Hall, to celebrate and acknowledge the awesome contribution students make to Cromwell College.

Awards included the Corridor Cup, presented to the corridor based on a points system that takes into account GPA; participation in sporting, cultural, and community events; as well as attendance spectating at these events. Our enthusiastic Crommie cheer squad will always place first on any leaderboard.

This year the Corridor Cup was awarded to Mid Cock.

Sportsman of the Year was awarded to Mitchell Taylor, and Sportswoman of the Year to Emily Brantz. These two students not only showed an outstanding commitment to Cromwell sports but are also incredible athletes, who helped shape our College sport during their time at Cromwell.

MEET THE 2022 STUDENT EXECUTIVE TEAM PRESIDENT- Michael Hewitt from Caloundra You’ll find me around College on the deck playing a bit of ping-pong most days, or probably even losing a game of pool over in the JCR. Next year, I’m super excited to have the opportunity to serve Cromwell as President of the Students' Association!

Essentially, this means I have the privilege of representing the larger student body of the college at internal and inter-college events, acting as a communicator between college staff and students, and directing the efforts and goals of the 2022 Student Leadership Team (SLT).

Most importantly, however, it places me in a position where I can be a part of a team of like-minded and driven young people that care deeply for this community, and grants us the capacity to create meaningful change. I’ve been pretty heavily involved in college life up until now, more recently coordinating Dancefest and working on the O-Week Committee, but the Exec team provides a whole host of new avenues to get involved with Cromwell.

The 2022 Executives are all amongst the most passionate and caring individuals I have had the honour of meeting, which makes me all the more enthusiastic about the prospect of working alongside them. There is something significant about being trusted with the chance to give back to the community that has made our young adult lives the most rewarding and memorable it could be, and I know we are all ready to throw ourselves at it completely.

I’m keen to lead the team from a relational style which, self-explanatorily, puts emphasis on building relationships between team members, and caring for each other as people primarily. This in turn, I believe, will make us a more effective and cohesive team, by helping us understand and cater towards each others' needs and duties more easily. It’s a policy I like to work into most team-related aspects of my life. We’re all in the very fortunate position of having all been friends for the last 2 years, so I’m very keen to learn more about our dynamic as a team over the coming months through P-Week and O-Week! I’m absolutely humbled to be offered this role, and I can’t wait to show the Cromwell community what we have in store for next year!

VICE PRESIDENT - Thomas Hallam from FNQ G’day! My name is Thomas “Randall” Hallam. I’m from the Atherton Tablelands in Far North Queensland (FNQ) and graduated from St Stephen’s Catholic College Mareeba in 2018. I took a gap year where I secured a job as a Greenkeeper at Maleny Golf club on the Sunny Coast. I came to Cromwell in 2020 where I studied Engineering at UQ but switched to Architecture at the beginning of this year which I’m finding a lot more enjoyable.

I was lucky enough to be voted in as the 2021 O-Week Convenor which was a massive task to try to juggle, especially with continuously changing Covid restrictions over the last summer break. However, working with the rest of the O-Week team really helped me to stay focused and ensure we gave the freshers this year the best start to College life. I was also elected to the Cromwell Shop where we sell snacks at affordable prices for the convenience of the other students. I’ve convened a handful of sports and was a part of the Social Committee.

Next year, I have the roles as an RA in Bottom Thatcher and as the Vice President of the Students' Association. As Vice President (VP) it is my job to oversee the merchandise and fundraising and ensure that the Lion's Den is clean and tidy. My goal for next year is to release new and improved merch designs and options throughout the whole year. I want to continue to add more fundraising events that include the whole college community, as it helps get students out of their rooms and builds stronger relationships. I’m really looking forward to meeting the new students of 2022 and I want to make their introduction into college life just as memorable as my first year. I don’t really have a life motto, but the closest thing to it would be, “If you do something in life, do it right the first time. You are only young once, so enjoy it while it lasts”. Lastly, my favourite spot at college is probably sitting under the Jacaranda tree outside of Thatcher and North.

SENIOR TUTOR: Maxine Allwood from the Gold Coast I am Cromwell’s Senior Tutor for 2022! I am studying a Bachelor of Science at UQ. This year I have tutored a few subjects at Cromwell, convened a few cultural events and was lucky enough to be one of the Sock Assassin convenors, which was a thrilling way to engage with the entire College and Admin. My favourite spot at Cromwell is definitely the deck outside the Dining Hall. It is the most versatile; I eat my breakfast there every morning, study on it during SWOTVAC and sometimes head down there for a game of ping pong or just to hang out. I am so excited to start my role as Senior Tutor next year. As well as ensuring that the College’s tutorial program runs smoothly, I am aiming to help improve the academic culture at Cromwell. I would love to emphasise and communicate to all students that no matter where you are in your academic journey, Cromwell, the student mentors and myself are extremely willing to provide support, encouragement, and academic assistance. My life motto would be, "With enough dedication and hard work, you can accomplish any goals". CULTURAL CONVENOR - Tayla Forbes from the Gold Coast Hi, my name is Tayla, and I’ve been fortunate enough to hold several positions at Cromwell such as being a Convenor for Basketball, Social Committee and the One Act Play; and I have participated in Dancefest, Choralfest, Basketball, Volleyball and One Act Play. I’m proud that I will be Cromwell’s 2022 Cultural Exec Convenor. This means I will be organising cultural activities, including hosting events and sourcing entertainment, plus offering support and assistance for 2nd-year Cultural Convenors. The highlight of my role will be planning the Cultural Awards Formal Dinner.

As Cultural Exec, I hope to rally support for Crommie cultural events, showcase our diverse Cromwell talent, be a reliable and encouraging Exec member and provide positivity throughout the College. I am all about the team and supporting one another, and so is Cromwell. We have a culture here that encourages everyone to strive for their best and to celebrate each other’s achievements. I’ve never been more grateful or proud to be a Cromwellian then when I'm on stage or behind the curtain. It was an experience I’ll never forget, and I want other students to have the opportunity to feel that way too.

Next year, I am looking forward to being surrounded by the inclusive Cromwell environment again. The positivity and support we provide for one another is what makes our College unique. We do refer to each other as family here and I can’t wait to celebrate another year with everyone. I am so excited to welcome the 2022 freshers and turn on the Cromwell charm in our ever-growing Crommie community.

My leadership attributes are being approachable, strong, organised, and caring. I want Cromwell to trust me in my decision-making and that I will provide a voice for issues that are relevant in our community. I want to stand my ground on issues that I am passionate about and have the will to follow them through.

My life motto is, 'Give a compliment a day. You never know what someone is going through, so even just the simplest of compliments can cheer someone up'. There’s not enough encouraging support outside these safe College environments, so I try to bring love to anyone I can. Even if it’s cliché, it’s a way to leave a positive impact on hard days.

Lastly, my favourite Cromwell place is the deck. It’s a popular choice for favourite spot, but I think it means the space is effective. I remember in my fresher year just chilling on the deck with two or three mates and within an hour we’d have a group of twenty sitting around us having a good laugh. What a great way to socialise and enjoy the beautiful view Cromwell provides.

ICC REPRESENTATIVE - Laura Knott from Toowoomba I am currently studying Pharmacy at UQ. I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to be the Inter-College Representative on the Inter-College Council (ICC), whilst also being an active member of our own Cromwell student leadership team in 2022.

I mentioned in my speech at the AGM, having been College Captain and Vice-President of my student council in Year 12, I was able to see the strong benefits of having connectedness to those out of your direct inner-circle from the opportunities taken and the people I met. This is ultimately why I decided to run for the role of ICC. I’ve definitely always taken a visionist approach to my leadership wanting to enhance others and never settle for less in the lengths we can strive for.

Having had the opportunity to already speak with the current ICC Secretary of 2021, Emma Tilley from Union College, I’ve come to be familiar with what is ahead of me, and I’m so excited! The role of secretary on the ICC encompasses much more than just dealing with the constitution.

A position like this provides the opportunity to learn new experiences day one into the job, with the benefit of wearing the orange overalls at the ICC events. Emma emphasized the uniqueness of the ICC Secretary and told me good organisation is essential. Tackling areas such as insurance renewals, I am not only able to source help from the Heads of College (HOC) who are assigned to the financial risk and audit subcommittee, but I can also draw on my own knowledge from working in Pharmacy as part of an organized and highly functioning team for 5 years. hbshhsrh ICC events are always popular in the College calendar and a highlight for many students. Being on the ICC, I hope I can enhance everyone’s ‘Crommie ticker’ and make it a year to remember! I know 2022 will be so rewarding and I can’t wait to experience my 3rd-year with not only the emerging Student Executive Team but with the rest of the College and especially all the freshers next year.

My life motto is short and sweet, 'What’s for you, won’t go by you'. Take to heart that everything that’s meant to be will be, and accept all outcomes no matter what. The deck is one of my favorite places at Cromwell. Ever since I came for a College tour, both myself and my parents loved the atmosphere and found the deck really enhanced the buildings, lawns, and gardens that surround it. To this day, it is still a place I love to eat lunch, study or even chill on with a couple of mates.

THE LION - Archie Martin from Victoria My Fresher name is Mehigan, named after the Australian MasterChef judge, Gary Mehigan. I am a 2nd-year at Cromwell and went to school in Brisbane, but was born in Wonthaggi, Victoria. The 'Lion' Exec position requires me to coordinate and create music for and take videos of important weeks through the Crommie year. This includes videos for O-Week and Valedictory Dinner, where we say farewell to our 3rd-year students. “As most of my classes were online in Semester 1, it was difficult for me to meet people from my course at Uni, but through Cromwell, I’ve been able to make many strong bonds and new friends,” says fresher Naomi Gray who scored straight 7s.

Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Design student, Natalie Blauberg, also achieved a perfect GPA at QUT. “Achieving a GPA 7 definitely makes the all-nighters worth it! I honestly don’t think I could do it without the support of the girls in my corridor!” says Natalie.

GUEST SPEAKER The guest speaker for the evening was Marvin Fox, Senior Program Officer at UQ Ventures. Marvin was a very engaging speaker. Marvin champions the importance of enterprise skills growth and development. He built a career overseas using his background in International Business, then shifted his focus to marketing and advertising.

Senior Academic Tutor Report

Every year, the Cromwell academic program continues to exemplify that college is not simply a place of residence but can work to further the academic success of students. In the context of course delivery changes mandated by COVID-19, throughout the year the Cromwell program has provided a constant of face-to-face support throughout lockdowns and Zoom delivery by multiple courses.

The Cromwell tutorial program allows students to request additional assistance with their courses, and while the academic support provided within the allocated tutorial time is valuable, a key facet of this program is to connect students within the College to others within their courses, working on the same assessment pieces and having similar course progressions, as well as familiar students who have experience with the course content.

An aspect of the academic program which especially provides guidance to freshers embarking on their first year of tertiary education is the academic mentor program. This year, six mentors across the five faculties have acted as a consistent guide to navigating a major adjustment from high school to university. The division of faculties allows freshers to speak to mentors from within their faculty who have experienced and done well in similar courses and content and have knowledge of appropriate resources and strategies available to deal with issues that can arise during this transition.

An extension of this program is the organisation of academic breakfasts, which provide a wide range of opportunities for all current students to connect with professionals and learn about ways in which they can enrich their CV and university experience. The mentors organised multiple breakfasts with their respective faculties, often in collaboration with COCA, to provide breakfasts on a wide range of topics, including marketing, computer science, business management, medicine, and engineering. The breakfasts provide Cromwell students with unique exposure to professionals who they may not otherwise have interacted with outside of College.

This year also saw the introduction of the pilot COCA mentor program, allowing current students to connect with past students who have followed a career path of interest.

Where the academic mentors can provide advice on university, the COCA mentors provide valuable advice on career progression and skills, thus filling a component of academic consultation that previously has not been available and facilitating an opportunity to network within the extended Cromwell family.

These facets of the academic life at Cromwell are more important in the context of the impact COVID-19 has had on university studies. I have been privileged to be a part of it as Senior Tutor, and I look forward to seeing how Cromwell furthers this support into the future with the construction of the new tutorial rooms.

This year’s AGM will be my last as President of the COCA Committee. I have decided it is a good time to step away from the committee and let someone else make their mark on COCA. I feel extremely privileged to have been part of the initial group of past students to have got COCA back up and running after a number of years left dormant.

Seeing the growth of COCA since initial discussions to restart the association in 2013 to where it is at now is humbling to reflect upon. The energy and passion of the current committee is immense, and I have full faith a fresh set of eyes will take COCA into the next phase of development.

COCA REPORT FROM THE PRESIDENT 2021 has been another year of balancing on the edge of the COVID-19 tightrope. Despite enjoying relative freedom when compared with our Southern counterparts (it must be the XXXX Gold!) COCA has still faced some challenges brought about by the pandemic.

If this uncertain time has taught me anything, it is the significance of strong personal support networks and community connection. The majority of my network is drawn from individuals with whom I shared memories of Cromwell.

In my mind, this is yet another example of the value Cromwell provides us long after we have left its corridors “benefits now, opportunities for life” The COCA year has been another steady one. In August, the decision was made to postpone the COCA Ball for a second consecutive year, to be held at a similar time in 2022. It was pleasing to have a significant number of ticket holders donate part or all of their ticket value to the College Foundation.

Our Industry Breakfasts have been a consistent feature of the COCA portfolio for a number of years and continued in 2021 with a great reception. A special thanks to those past students and guests who gave up their time to give back to current Cromwell students. It is greatly appreciated.

A new fixture in the COCA stable this year has been the launch of our Mentoring Program and ‘Soft Skills’ Workshops. These programs launched in the second half of the year and will continue to grow in the future as we take feedback to create a better product for students.

Our final function for the year is taking place on Saturday 27th November as we hold our Annual General Meeting (AGM), before celebrating the year that was with the annual COCA Christmas Drinks at the ever-faithful Regatta Hotel in Toowong.

Countless hours have gone into providing events and programs for COCA, especially in the initial years. As such, special thanks should go to Daniel Baum who almost single handily relaunched the association and has contributed far more to the College than has been recognised.

Further mentions to Alan Wrigley and Alex Newton who have led with aplomb and have been an incredible support network to me, often providing the voice of reason to some of my more outlandish ideas. Both will continue in their roles as secretary and treasurer respectively which is great for COCA. The remainder of the committee, Lillian Horneman-Wren, Joanne Landmark, Rich Shannon, Cooper Murray, Roxane Mutschler, Kaleb Jeynes and Josh Eiser have selflessly given up their time and have been immensely helpful - thank you all for being so passionate and enthusiastic.

It would be remiss of me not to thank Ross Switzer and his significantly better half Jenny for all their support in helping COCA get back off the ground. Your continued support even after leaving has been much appreciated.

It has been a pleasure having current Principal, Simon Armstrong, continuing with this high level of engagement with the Committee as we look to better align with the College’s needs moving forward.

Originally a Mid Cock girl and RA of Top Thatcher in her third year, Alison Ariotti (née Fletcher) has always been very sociable by nature, so Cromwell College was perfect for her. Having studied a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Journalism, her limited contact hours allowed her to spend a lot of time at college playing sport and hanging out with friends.

As you were a Cromwell resident from 1998 to 2000, how did your time at Crommie help you in terms of your interpersonal skills?

One thing I liked about Cromwell were the opportunities to take on more responsibilities and develop leadership skills. I also loved that there was a capacity for mentorship across the ages within college. For me, it was also my first time living out of home, so there is a bit of that ‘sink or swim’ mentality; but you do have a lot of help available to you. You develop so much as a person

because you learn so many different skills about managing your life, your friendships and studying.

If you can meet and break down barriers with people, then that’s a skill that can take you wherever you are in life. Because Cromwell has such a variety of people, you do really get that gamut of backgrounds that open your eyes to different people’s experiences.

For students who may struggle with balancing commitments, what tips do you have to lessen the risk of overcommitting?

You can say no to things, and life does not stop if you say no to something. At the end of the day, you can prioritise what you love, but, if you can’t make it to something, that’s okay. You be honest with yourself in terms of your inability to do everything rather than leave everything to the last minute and struggle.

How did you go about getting muchneeded workplace experience for your degree?

I was quite fortunate when I went through QUT that I knew I wanted to get into broadcast journalism and being a part of QUT News helped get me a lot of experience whilst at uni. Even as early as high school, I did my work experience at a local radio station.

When I was at college, I, off my own back, organised some work experience with the Gold Coast Bulletin at the time as I lived in Kingscliff.

I was lucky enough during uni that I had several different internships that were offered with the ABC. In being a freelance journalist when I was younger, it was a way to make a bit of extra money, a way to develop a different skill set, and something extra to challenge me in my career.

It is a little bit of saturation at play in trying to go to as many different places to work out what you want to do. It is such a contact-driven industry, and it’s a profession that rarely advertises for jobs. The key takeaway is to make a great first impression in your work experience periods and use your connections; it’s not what you know but who you know.

How did you eventually manage to be granted the opportunity to file stories from London, Delhi and the Tour de France?

There’s a greater scope to travel once you get in a role that is considered more of a network role across Australia rather than just within your own state. You have to put in your hard yards and wait your turn. They also want to see you can work well independently of the newsroom. Make yourself a strong oneman band, so you’re someone who can work efficiently and quickly on your own.

They want to see that you’re someone who can do the stories with light and shade with the fun feature stories with elements of both. Becoming as wellrounded a reporter as you can is important too.

In 2011, I spent 6 months following the Southeast Queensland floods as they destroyed homes, lives, and livelihoods.

After the waters receded, I filmed a series of reports about the ensuing insurance scandal, and in turn was able to secure some additional payments for flood victims.

I was a reporter on the Sunshine Coast when Daniel Morcombe went missing and covered his initial disappearance.

Later, I was with the TODAY Show when eventually his body was found, and his killer arrested. It was momentous to be able to follow a story over so many years to a point where justice was finally served.

Were there any times things did not go to plan when the cameras started rolling?

Hmmm…. well, I have had a car crash right behind me while LIVE on TV, I’ve also fainted while LIVE on TV & subsequently had to announce a pregnancy a little earlier than planned as a result!

What experience during your time at Cromwell have you found to be relevant in your workplace?

I would say to make as many friends as possible at college and never burn any bridges, because you never know who you will need later in life to help you in your job, or even just to be a solid friend!

Do you have any words of wisdom for current Cromwell students?

Soak up as much as you can, because it is so true that your years at college are some of the best years of your life.

Just to have that sense of freedom, the opportunities and the friendships, the fact that everything is on tap for you, and the capacity for such fun with limited responsibility, is amazing.

Name some career highlights?

Covering Le Tour De France, we were in France for the TODAY Show to film a colour story about 100 Years of Le Coq Sportif. I had so much fun following the tour and capturing the buzz of the event, while participating in the ‘caravan’ that draws millions to the roadside. Visiting Delhi, and London for the TODAY Show, covering Royal Tours, and being chosen as a CNN Atlanta Intern.

Krishna Stanton

Olympian, Educator, Inspirational Guest Speaker....

Meet Cromwell College, Dean of Students... Olympian and Commonwealth Games Medalist, Krishna Stanton inspires students with her story of resilience as an Australian distance runner.

Cromwell College Dean of Students and Olympian, Krishna Stanton, is a celebrated Australian distance runner. A Commonwealth Games medal was Krishna's reward for persistence following an athletic career filled with devastating twists and turns.

Krishna is a seasoned public speaker and uses her personal journey as an elite runner to explore universal themes including, resilience, self-belief, goal setting, overcoming setbacks, and leadership.

Krishna’s story inspires Cromwell students to face any challenges, especially those posed by an ever-shifting educational landscape in the COVID-19 era.

Krishna finished fourth in the 3000 metres at the 1987 IAAF World Indoor Championships and went on to win the silver medal in the marathon at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. She also competed at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. A four-time Australian champion, she won the 3000 metres title in 1990 and 1993, the 15km in 1990, and the marathon in 2001.

My running career had many twists and turns, and ups and downs, but it has been worth it. I believe persistence is the ability to carry on despite obstacles. Out of pain is often born an inner strength, from disappointment is built sheer, gritty determination.

And whether in sport or in life, with determination you can achieve the most amazing things. Most people don’t fulfill their full potential, but it is far better to have tried than not at all.

Whether it’s your hobby or career, nothing comes easy.

Krishna says her 'never give up' attitude and self-belief is an example to students that you can overcome any obstacles in your life with perseverance.

Young people today have the world at their feet, and nothing is beyond them if they have the will to pursue their goals. They will confront pain and disappointment - that’s life. Persistence in the face of adversity though is the key. That, and a constant desire to be a better person and to make the world a better place for all is also something we should all strive for.

Krishna lives with her husband, Robin, on-campus at Cromwell College and supports the student cohort with pastoral care and guidance.

WORK IN PROGRESS After two years in the planning, Cromwell is finally in the process of renovations to the Administration Building and tutorial rooms.

The refurbishment and extension of the tutorial rooms will create purpose-built learning and study spaces for residents.

The new tutorial precinct integrates with the North lawn and overlooks the main courtyard and will enable the College to double its tutorial capacity and create a learning precinct consisting of: 3 spaces for small group tutorials; a dedicated space for our engineering, architectural, and fashion students to spread out plans, patterns, and to build models; 3 spaces for large group tutorials which can be reconfigured for quiet study or conference groups.

The refurbishment of the Administration Building will bring all the Cromwell staff under the one roof and centrally locate student services, with the lower level creating a student hub that will integrate pastoral and academic support, with access to the Deputy Principal, Dean of Students, and College Counsellor. The Administration Building renovations will also improve access for those residents and visitors with a disability.

The project is expected to be completed by the start of the academic year in February 2022, and it is our aim to keep student disruption to a minimum.
