Students’ donations will help keep families warm this weekend Anita Bosch, family advocate, and Gadsden Police Chief Jeff Sills accept a donation of more than 170 pairs of socks for the Wo/Men’s Resource and Rape Assistance Program from Mrs. Kaye Stroud’s first grade class at Gadsden Elementary School.

When your feet are cold, everything is cold, said Gadsden Police Chief Jeff Sills and Anita Bosch, family advocate, as they accepted a donation of more than 170 pairs of socks for families served by the Wo/Men’s Resource and Rape Assistance Program (WRAP).

“These are a wonderful donation.

I am so proud of these kids,” Bosch said. “These socks will help keep a lot of people warm this winter. I am so proud of these kids.”

The socks were collected and donated by first grade students in Mrs. Kaye Stroud’s class at Gadsden Elementary School.

The socks were collected in honor of Bobby Mullins, Director of the Crockett County School System, duing Socktober to Toevember.

Members of Mrs. Stroud’s first grade class include Christopher Anderson, Ashley Boone, Laura Leigh Brimm, Lanyah Cathey, Caleb Dolan, Ella Emison, Lillian Hardin, Ethan Hart, Aiden Hernandez, Jamie Hicks, Lane Hopkins, Lizzy Jones, Mason Lockard, Ivy Maness, Gracie Pugh, Jack Sanders, Owen Smith and Landon Trimmer.

This drive was inspired by Kid President Robby Novak’s October online video, Socktober. The 10-year-old Kid President is a YouTube sensation who says the Internet should be used to do good things, not to create millions of “selfies.” More about the Kid President can be found on his website, www.kidpresident.com and on YouTube by searching SoulPancake.

WRAP is the only agency in West Tennessee providing services to both sexual and domestic violence survivors. Services are offered primarily in 14 West Tennessee counties: Crockett, Benton, Carroll, Chester, Decatur, Gibson, Hardeman, Hardin, Haywood, Henderson, Henry, Madison, McNairy and Wayne counties.

Some of the free services offered by WRAP include safe shelter, transportation, individual counseling, support groups, hospital and court accompaniment, and transitional housing.

The caucus process puts the selection of Republican candidates for county offices in the hands of Crockett County Republican Party executive committee. CCHS Art Students Combine Art, Literacy, and Technology for a Unique Gallery Experience

Project Description CCHS students in Art I incorporated a study of color and self to create their monochromatic self-portrait. After an introduction to color by Ms. Jennifer Allen in their Art I class, students visited the library and participated with Mrs. Nichols in the close-reading of multiple articles on color psychology and symbolism. After gathering evidence from their texts, each student selected the color he/she found to best represent him/her. Back in their art class, students painted their self-portraits using any shade of that one color. Then, Mrs. Nichols visited the classroom to discuss the writing of their Artist Statement. Once completed, the students recorded a voice thread featuring a portion of that statement and linked it to the QR Code featured with their painting. Gallery visitors scanned the QR Code to hear the student’s artist statement.

Comment by Ms. Jennifer Allen, Art Teacher “I am always looking to incorporate other disciplines into my art class. So when Mindy Nichols approached me about this project at the beginning of the semester I was committed to making it happen. It sounded like the perfect combination of art, literacy, and technology. I also knew my Art 1 students would find it challenging and interesting. We began by learning about the color wheel and value-the lightness and darkness of a color, then worked with Ms. Nichols on the meaning of color and artist’s statements. It was exciting to see Ms. Nichols getting the students to think deeper about why they chose their color. In the end, my students’ hard work and cooperation brought the project to life and made it the success it was. I am so thankful for Ms. Nichols collaboration on this project. We all learned something in the process and I can’t wait to do it again in future classes.”

Chorus, band concerts are delightfully entertaining

The band and chorus at Crockett County Middle and High School presented two delightful Christmas concerts on Dec. 9 and 15.

Traditional music such as the Hallelujah Chorus, Jingle Bell Rock and Joy to the World were played and sung.

More than 150 students are involved in these programs led by Leah Foust, Kathy Kail and Karen Barker.

Students from Tennessee College of Applied Technology - Ripley attend Leadership Training

TCAT Ripley student participants served as voting delegates for Quinel Nabors. He campaigned for SkillsUSA Tennessee Postsecondary state office. He and his delegates were successful as he was elected and installed Tuesday, November 26. Quinel is the third TCAT Ripley Computer Information Technology (CIT) student consecutively elected to state office.

Joyce Nelson, State Treasurer 2013 and also a CIT student, carried out her officer responsibilities throughout the duration of the training. She and her officer team made special presentations, conducted meetings, and assisted conference attendees as they pursued earning their statesman pins.

TLTI was modeled after SkillsUSA Washington Leadership Training Institute (WLTI). Joint and separate training sessions for students and advisors were held. Prior to the conference, each student had to create a brochure with facts about SkillsUSA, the TCAT he/she attends, and the Wilder-Naifeh Technical Skills Grant. They were also required

Easy Steps delivers learning to young children Teaching children to read opens their minds to a whole new world. A world filled with knights, Indians, fairies, princesses and presidents.

Kacey Cruse Stribling is working to open up this world to children as young as possible.

Through the Easy Steps to School Success Program, she delivers books to children from birth to age 5 as her full-time job.

Twice a month, Stribling visits approximately 50 children who plan to later attend Maury City Elementary School. She delivers a bag of books to each child. With children ages 3 and younger, Stribling also teaches them social skills, works with their motor skills and tries to connect the families with the school.

“I try to introduce the children to books and learning at a very young age. Children who read well excel in school and have a wider vocabulary,” said Stribling, a native of Crockett County who taught high school before joining Maury City Elementary in the Early Steps to School Success Program.

From age 3 until age 5, Stribling provides a book bag exchange program for the children. She delivers four new books twice a month in exchange for the four old books.

This is the second year for the Early Steps program in Crockett County. It is designed to assist children with early language development, social and emotional development, and equip parents with the skills and knowledge to successfully support their child’s growth.

Once a month, Stribling invites the children in her program to a parent-child meeting, where the kids can get together and socialize. Sometimes, the meetings are held in the community and sometimes they are held at the school.

“Whenever I have a new child enroll, I make sure they get to visit the pre-K classroom, meet the teacher and see what happens in class. This helps them, and their parents, to get to know the teachers and the school. It makes starting school a lot easier and less stressful,” Stribling said.

The program is open to all families in Maury City or the area served by Maury City Elementary School with children from birth to 4 years old. Space in the program is limited, but Stribling says she would ultimately like to have 20 children age birth to three and 30 children ages 3 to 4.

Robertson’s Store by: Dr. George Robertson If you went to the big town of Maury City anytime between 1940 to 1980 you would probably have seen the G.W. Robertson & Son dry goods store at its center. The tallest building in the block faced east on Main St. .It was conceived by my grandfather, George Washington Robertson, after being in the retail business for a brief time with Mr. Earle Bysee. Granddaddy moved just two doors up the street to offer the consumers an alternative shopping experience.

The building boasted two floors of the latest in apparel from ladies hats and suits to farm wear and sewing needs. Its big inventory gave lots of choices to people who couldn’t get 30 miles down the road to Dyersburg (a long trip back in the 40s).

The family did a lot of credit business with the many farmers in the county.

They would get back-to-school clothes for the family and pay after the cotton crops were ginned in the fall only to start another credit bill by Christmas, which was the most fun time of the year in the store.

My whole family came to town the week before the holidays and stayed busy helping Santa Claus with his purchases. In my teens I was the toy “expert” and assisted the parents with special surprises for their children for Christmas mornings.

George Washington Robertson During this week there was always plenty of time between sales for my grandfather to tease his many longtime customers with lines like “That’s not the same woman you came in with last week, is it?”

Daddy’s credit business took on a new face after my grandfather’s passing. It was so much trouble trying to collect that he went to a post dated check technique allowing the customer to write a check for the amount of purchase and put a date on it a month or two down the road when it was supposed to be paid. All my father had to do was to submit the check at the planned date to the bank. If there were no funds to cover it, the county sheriff would serve the creditor to get the money. One particularly heavy account turned out to be so much that the country farm was used for part collateral.

The store offered services for the community like opening up for a friend on Sunday for that special ribbon to wear to church or getting a new suit to wear to a funeral. The lounge chair by the big brass cash register was a convenient place to catch up on the city news and pass some time discussing the morning newspaper articles.

My father continued to run the store even after being on oxygen and getting around in a motorized chair. After his Caption: G. W. Robertson & Son dry goods store. Left to death in 1985, my mother opened the store religiously for right: Jim Williamson, mother, Mr. George.

13 years until her stroke at the age of 80.

It was hard to see the store and the whole town go idle, but as the small farms began being replaced by big farming, there were fewer people as customers. The need for the business was no longer there so the building with its contents was auctioned off 15 years ago.

It was a joy to be associated with the dry goods business where I learned a lot about salesmanship, accounting, and public trust. The store supplied both my father and grandfather with a decent income helping put three children through college and professional school.

352 graduate from Union University JACKSON, Tenn. - Danna Britt of Bells, TN, daughter of Jo Lynn Jackson and Danny Britt, was one of three hundred fifty-two students who graduated from Union University Dec. 14 during the fall commencement service of the 189th graduating class at West Jackson Baptist Church. Britt graduated with a Master of Science in Nursing Adult Nurse Practitioner degree in Adult Nurse Practitioner.

Michael Duduit, dean of the College of Christian Studies at Anderson University and former executive vice president at Union, delivered the commencement address. Duduit said that graduating from Union is a dangerous act - not for the graduates, but for the culture in which they live. “Your time at Union has equipped you to be the kind of influencer who reshapes culture, who can make a defense for the hope that is in you in every walk of life,� Duduit said. “That makes you dangerous.�

Located in Jackson, Tenn., Union University is a liberal arts-based university affiliated with the Tennessee Baptist Convention. Founded in 1823, Union is the oldest institution affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention.

TN - Q BBQ Has Been Sold Rick and Jan Reynolds recently announced they have sold their BBQ Business to West Tennessee native Bob Reed.

Bob along with his wife Amy reside in Jackson. They have two daughters, Rebekah, who is 20 years old and a sophomore at UT Chattanooga and 17 year old Abby who is a Junior at North Side high School. Bob is a Graduate from Union University and obtained his MBA from UT Martin. Amy is the guidance counselor at Beech Bluff Elementary.

Festival of Trees by NOAH Billy Gibson of Maury City holds the Children’s Choice Award beside the “Hunter’s Tree,” which was created by hunters in the county.

The Crockett County Health Department received the People’s Choice Award for the tree titled “Have Yourself a Healthy Christmas.” Accepting the award are (from left) Ruan Jones, Linda Taylor, Jason King, Misty King and (front) Will Tritt with the trophy.

The holidays were a little brighter and more joyful for participants in the NOAH Festival of Trees on Dec. 14 and 15 at the Crockett Room in Alamo.

NOAH would like to say “thank you” to all the civic groups, individuals, businesses and organizations for supporting this effort in increasing the Christmas spirit in Crockett County. Without the generous donation of the Crockett Room by Isaac Searcy, this event would not have been possible.

There were 23 trees decorated by people from all around the county, and the creativity had a glow that was breathtaking.

The winner of the People’s Choice Award was “Have Yourself a Healthy Christmas,” which was presented by the Crockett County Health Department. Their tree was adorned with creative decorations like plastic glove stars, a bandage garland and tongue-depressant stars.

The Children’s Choice Award winner was the “Hunting Tree,” created by the hunters of Crockett County. It featured a large turkey perched atop the tree, a deer stand and other interesting items.

Judy Ward was the winner of the door prize gift tray, and door prize winner for the children was Rebecca Kelly.

Plans are already being made for this to become an annual event of Crockett County.

A working woman during WWII

by Nancy Harper The following article was written by Bobby and Jere Cates’s sister, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did.

First, let me introduce you to Mr. Bobby’s sister. She is Sister Mary Francis, and the following remarks were written about her when she received the Mother Maria Theresia Bonzel Award on Oct. 6, 2009: • A strong sense of community service prior to entering the convent. Sister Mary Francis worked in a munitions factory to support the WWII war effort. She has always been a strong advocate of God, family, and country.

• She was a convert to the Catholic faith. She learned about Catholicism through her roommate’s faith and example. She often considered herself “blessed” by her conversion and the commitment it fostered in her heart.

• She worked hard to combine her head and her heart in service to others.

• Her forward looking vision helped mold the future of the ministry through computerization, financial reporting, tax reporting (meeting with the IRS), and long-ranging financial planning necessary for obtaining debt approvals.

• An untiring work ethic.

Bells complied by having school begin at 7 a.m., skip recess, etc.

(continued from page 24) electrician and worked for the Fleet. When he left for work each morning, he never knew when he would be back—one, two, or three days.

At school in Memphis, the Assistant Principal of Tech High, called for me to come to her office. A girl I only knew somewhat had recommended me to help with rationing stamps registration in downtown Memphis over the weekend. I accepted.

Then, high school graduation! We were the first class to wear caps and gowns instead of formal gowns and suits. Informal dress was worn for other occasions.

Why? So more “Savings Bonds” could be bought. The next day after graduation in the evening at Ellis Auditorium, almost all the boys were leaving at 8 a.m. for military service.

After graduation, I worked for Sefton Fibre Can Co. making shell containers for different ammunition guns. Sefton Fibre Can Co. had plants in St. Louis and New Orleans, but the company rented an old barge building in Memphis to begin a wartime production plant. The plant had eight production lines, a machine shop, and a pressroom. Federal inspectors were on each line after which the containers were loaded from each line into a railway car for shipment.

The press department stamped out lids for these different containers. There three huge automatic machines with a flywheel on each one weighing over a ton. There were three shifts and each shift produced 60,000 to 65,000 lids. Then Sister Mary Francis receiving her there were four or five semi-automatic machines where a girl would stand on her habit. left foot for eight hours and hold a pedal down with her right foot to make the machine go automatic. The operator could cross her legs to give the other leg a little relief for a short time. Lids were stamped out of strips of tin with sharp edges. The third type of machine used was for very large lids and usually, or was supposed to be, stamped one at a time. But we girls figured out how we could get certain automation out of this machine also. However, it was much harder on the body.

There was also a huge flat machine where a man cut big sheets of tin into the size of strips needed at each machine. Just beyond that we could walk on a porch and look down into the Mississippi River. The plant employed about two thousand people when running to capacity. Some individuals were so very good.

And for the most part, all were completely dedicated to helping “our boys” who needed these shells so much.

How important was this work? Time brings many changes

by Nancy Harper Mr. Lynn Colvett, a native and grocery store owner in Crockett County, put together a collection of memories entitled, “Alamo from Muleback to Jet Age,” written in 1991. The following is one of the stories: Time Brings Many Changes Alamo has been the county seat for almost one-hundred-twenty-years. This represents about six generations. No one can remember all the changes that have taken place during that time. A few of us can remember many changes that have taken place during the last 60 or 70 years. Some of the greatest changes have been in communication and in transportation. The old “party line” with its cranking telephone has been replaced by a convenient “touch” system that gives private conversation all over the United States, and to many parts of the world in a very few seconds.

The paved four lane interstates have tied all the cities closer together. Someone has said from the sky the earth looked like it was all bound up with silver ribbon.

Just a short time before Alamo became the county seat, someone said that to go to Memphis and back the same day would always be impossible.

The jet-powered airplane has made it possible to eat breakfast in Los Angeles and supper in New York City. It’s possible now to go around the world in just a few hours.

Bringing the changes closer to home, the mule barn with its aroma has been replaced with the tractor. The open ditch with its raw sewage has given away to a clean underground system. The old smoky fireplace with its ashes has been replaced with its clean central heat.

One of the biggest chores of yesterday was washday. All the old fence posts and railings were saved for wood around the wash pot. On washday several buckets of water were drawn and put in a large iron wash pot. Mostly the women used homemade lye soap or O.K. washing powder. Clothes were usually scrubbed on an old brass scrub board. If it was a warm summer day, this took place in a shady spot, but if the weather was cold, 35 Spacious Apartments for Independent Living either on the south side of the house or in the kitchen area.

However, all the above has been replaced by hot and cold running water, an automatic washing machine, three temperature detergent, and electric clothes dryer. Washday has changed from washday to “wash hour.” You can very well watch T.V. or pick up your favorite book to read during the process of “doing laundry.” Actually, we have always had running water—someone was always saying, “Run and draw a bucket of water.”

Up to the middle of 1930 many of the families kept their own milk cow or cows and churned their own butter.

By the late 1930s the local dairy farmers supplied most of the milk. Milking is a very disagreeable job in the winter, unpleasant in the summer, and there never was a real convenient time to churn. Those of us who remember those days know how to appreciate the dairy case in the supermarket and the man who invented or discovered oleomargarine.

Many of our other labor saving devices have made most home chores easier.

Many changes have been made around our city. At one time First Monday in March was a big trade day. Many who came to town only two or three times each year never missed First Monday in March. This was the day they paid their taxes, renewed their subscription to the county paper, replenished their plow gear, purchased their seed potatoes, and other garden needs. Many would purchase a few weeks’ supply of groceries on that day.

It used to be that very few people came to town other than on Saturday. It wasn’t unusual for merchants to do as much business from Saturday 1 p.m. until closing time as they did all the week.

Some other changes that are easily overlooked, but hard to forget are those familiar sounds we used to hear. The long and loud gin whistle, the chugging of the old gasoline engine that pulled the electric generator, the tolling of the church bells, the screaming sound of the old saw mill, the ringing of the blacksmith anvil, the little B&NW train that made four trips through town bringing us our mail and keeping us posted on the time of day, besides the freight and passengers it transported. We have long since forgotten the steel tired wagon and the sound of the horses’ feet. All these sounds have ceased, leaving us with the sirens from the police cars, the ambulance, and the fire trucks.

Radios and televisions have almost put an end to family togetherness. Those days are thought of and sometimes referred to as the “Good Old Days,” and they were that, but it’s easy to see that “The Gold Old Days” have given over to a much easier life in many ways. With all the changes which have taken place, there is one thing about Alamo that has not changed. Its location remains the same. Five miles north of the L&N railroad, 72 miles northeast of Memphis, 170 miles west of Nashville. To be more specific, it is near the center of Crockett County, Crockett County is near the center of West Tennessee, West Tennessee is near the center of the mid south, the mid south is near the center of the south central part of the United States, the south central part of the United States is the garden spot of the world.

What changes will our children and grandchildren see?

Only the Lord knows.

Unique ways to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Few people in American history have had as strong an impact on the United States as Martin Luther King, Jr., the civil rights leader who was slain in 1968 at the age of 39. Through his message of nonviolence and civil disobedience as a means to advancing civil rights for all people, King changed the lives of millions.

Those changes are still felt today, nearly half a century after his death.

Though his death was tragic, Kingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life remains something to celebrate, a fact recognized by the federal government in 1983, when President Ronald Reagan signed a bill creating a federal holiday to honor King.

Since 2000, all 50 states have observed the holiday, which has been observed on the third Monday of January each year since 1992. For many, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a time to reflect on Kingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life and advance his message. Children do not have school on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, making the holiday an ideal time for parents to teach their kids about King and his lasting legacy. The following are a few unique ways adults and children alike can celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. * Give back to your community. A community leader who made countless sacrifices for both his own community and the nationwide community of those denied their civil rights, King is perhaps best honored by those who make efforts to give back to their communities. Parents can take their youngsters to volunteer and help the less fortunate, be it working at a soup kitchen or an assisted living facility. Many communities host outreach events on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and adults and children can take advantage of such events to honor Kingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s legacy. * Read about the Civil Rights Movement with your children. Thanks to advancements in technology, men, women and children now have a wealth of information at their fingertips. This makes it easy for parents to discuss the Civil Rights Movement, and Kingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s role in that movement, with their children. The older kids are, the more detailed parents can be when explaining the struggles King encountered. Even adults without children are likely to be enlightened by studying the Civil Rights Movement and Kingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life in closer detail. * Listen to or read Kingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s speeches. Renowned for his abilities as an orator, King gave numerous speeches throughout his life, many of which are equally, if not more, moving today than they were during his lifetime. While Kingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;I Have a Dreamâ&#x20AC;? speech delivered in 1963 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial is widely known, King gave many more speeches throughout his lifetime. Such speeches are an invaluable resource for those interested in learning about the life of King and his beliefs.

The life of Martin Luther King, Jr. is something to celebrate, and the holiday in his name is a great time to reflect on and study his life while making efforts to improve your community.
