Director’s Message
Welcome to the fifth edition of Circular – CRJ Services’ quarterly newsletter, rounding up our latest news and developments.
We hope that you and your families had an enjoyable Christmas break and 2023 has proved successful thus far.
As we enter a new year, we are seeing supply challenges improve, steel costs reduce and for the most part normality as we knew it, return.
CRJ Services has continued to invest heavily in our hire fleet, sales stock and spare parts holding, in an effort to alleviate the pressure on our customers who are experiencing long lead times on machinery and parts.
Over the past 12 months, we have increased the number of active machines in our hire fleet by 17%, with further expansion planned for the forthcoming year.
November saw CRJ Services expand our sales portfolio further with the addition of the Kentek brand of static trommel screeners. CRJ Services has been appointed as the exclusive dealer for Kentek Systems Ltd in England and Wales. We are very excited to be given this opportunity as the Kentek static electric trommels are proving very popular with our customers, with two trommel plants having been ordered already at Growing Beds Ltd in Bedford and Luna Waste Ltd in Doncaster.
As we continue to grow, there has been a lot to celebrate at CRJ Services. In October, we gained the Silver Investors in People accreditation, which has been the culmination of a lot of hard work and investment into our employee experience. A special mention to Ali Wennell, our Business Manager, and her team for this achievement, and monumental workload.
The Investors in People award has followed a series of other accreditations gained throughout the year, including three ISO accreditations: ISO 9001 Quality Management, ISO 14001 Environmental Management, ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management. Our transport department also gained the Bronze Level FORS (Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme). A huge congratulations to all involved.
In the past few months, we have also expanded our team, with the addition of two heavy plant mechanics from South Africa (Deon and Francois), who we have sponsored as skilled migrant workers. We have also seen the CRJ Services Apprenticeship Scheme move into its second year, with the addition of three new apprentices (Shiu, AJ and Paul). We wish them all well and look forward to continuing to support them in their new roles.
I would like to, as always, thank our stakeholders, customers, suppliers, and colleagues for their continued support throughout 2022. I wish you every success in the new year ahead.

CRJ Services gains ‘Investors in People - Silver’ Accreditation
CRJ Services is delighted to announce that, following a rigorous assessment process, we have been awarded the ‘We invest in people – Silver accreditation’ from Investors in People.

Achieving the IIP Silver accreditation recognises our highly empowered workforce, supportive management, and an embedded commitment to develop our people.

“IIP Silver accreditation is an amazing achievement something that only 20% of organisations achieve”
Hayley Allen – Investors in People Assessor stated: ‘Achieving IIP Silver accreditation is an amazing achievement something that only 20% of organisations achieve. This award recognises CRJ’s commitment to investing in its people. Through the assessment process it was evident that a

significant amount of effort had been put into improving people management practices and recognising people’s contribution to make CRJ a great place to work’. Commenting on the award, Ali Wennell – Business Manager at CRJ Services Ltd, said: “At CRJ Services we are passionate about helping our team reach their potential. We have invested a significant amount of time and resource to improve the experience of working at CRJ Services. This has included areas such as employee engagement, development and well-being, as well as internal processes and communication channels. I am therefore very proud of this accreditation, which reflects the efforts our team have put in, across all departments.”
As part of the investment, CRJ Services brought in People Puzzles to audit and advise on how to improve the employee experience. Robin Stirzaker Philips - Portfolio People Director at People Puzzles commented; “It’s a testament to the leadership team who have invested not only time and resource but demonstrated a real commitment to making CRJ a great place to work.”
CRJ Services Ltd appointed as

the exclusive dealer for Kentek Systems Ltd
CRJ Services is delighted to announce an exclusive dealership agreement with trommel screen manufacturer, Kentek Systems. The new agreement sees CRJ Services appointed as their dealer across England and Wales.

Kentek Systems Ltd is an Irish manufacturer of recycling systems, specialising in static and semi-mobile, electric trommel screens. Kentek is renowned for combining robust build quality with energyefficient operation. Their XD range of trommel screens, available in a range of sizes, uses only two motors, offering significant operating cost reductions compared to other electric and diesel-powered trommel screens.
“We are excited to bring another quality brand into the CRJ Sales portfolio in Kentek. Their electric trommel screen solutions align with our objective of offering our clients quality equipment solutions that cater to the everevolving waste management and recycling industries. The energy efficiency of their trommels will be an appealing concept for our customers as energy prices continue to rise.”
DIRECTOR“We are thrilled to bring CRJ Services onboard as our exclusive dealer for England and Wales. Having worked with CRJ Services on previous projects, it was the obvious next step to bring them into our dealer network. Their ethos and proven track record as quality distributors of recycling equipment makes them a fantastic asset to the Kentek brand, and we look forward to working closely with them.”
GERARD MCFADDEN DIRECTORCRJ Services Supplies Growing Beds Recycling Services with a Duel Kentek Static Trommel System

Growing Beds Recycling Services Ltd (GBRS) receives green waste from various sources, including builders, landscapers and homeowners. This material is shredded and placed onto their block composting system for maturing. The maturing material is turned regularly using the latest windrow turning technology until its composting cycle is completed. Once the material has matured, it is screened into different fraction sizes providing various specifications of compost.
As their company and facility have grown, the volume of green waste GBRS receives has increased. Their previous screening process consisted of two mobile trommel screens, which were beginning to struggle with the volumes of green waste needing to be processed.

A new screening solution was required, and GBRS took this opportunity to increase its screening capacity and introduce a more straightforward, more costeffective solution that reduced moving parts and energy costs.
Mark Evans, Director at Growing Beds Recycling Services, approached Mike Symons, Area Sales Manager at CRJ Services, to discuss his requirements. Having previously dealt with GBRS, Mike understood their processes and proposed a static electric dual Kentek XD620S trommel plant, including a feed hopper and auxiliary conveyors.
“This has been a great project to be a part of. It has been our first time supplying a Kentek trommel system, which I predict will become a popular option for our customers. With the removal of the red diesel subsidy in April, and the recent increase in white diesel costs, the electric trommel provides a lower processing cost per tonne compared with the previous diesel-driven screeners. It is great to see our first solution delivering great results for Mark and his GBRS team.”
The Kentek trommel plant has provided GBRS with a range of benefits over their previous screening equipment, including increased throughput capacity, reduced energy costs, and a reduction in maintenance costs due to fewer moving components.
Speaking to Mark Evans following the commissioning of the plant, he stated, “The new static trommels plant is straightforward to operate and is probably doing double the tonnage compared to our mobile trommels.”

The History of HAAS
HAAS Recycling-Systems GmbH is a global leader in manufacturing mobile and static waste processing and recycling plants. Volker Haas started the company in a double garage in Stockum-Püschen, Germany, in 1989. Thirty-four years later, HAAS has built a reputation for integrating the latest technology with robust and durable build quality.
HAAS manufactured and sold individual machine components in its early years before expanding its offering to fully bespoke wood and waste processing plants. The first was installed in 1992 for Schmid Holzrecycling & Biomasse GmbH in Gussenstadt, Germany.
In 1999, HAAS launched their now flagship machine, the TYRON,

a twin-shaft slow-speed shredder. Two years later, HAAS entered the UK market when it sold the first TYRON in the UK to waste management company - Viridor.

The first HAAS static plant in the UK was installed in 2008 for Bodens Group Ltd at their Astley site in Greater Manchester. This plant is still operation today, having undergone a number of upgrades over the years.
As the HAAS brand grew in prominence, they introduced a dealership structure within the UK and Ireland. Matpro Machinery Ltd was awarded the Scottish dealership in 2015 and became the exclusive dealer in the UK & Ireland a year later before amalgamating with CRJ Services Ltd in 2019.
CRJ Services’ relationship with HAAS started in 2012 when CRJ Services purchased their first TYRON for the CRJ Hire fleet.
“We initially decided to introduce the HAAS TYRON to the CRJ hire fleet as the slowspeed shredder of choice due to its versatility and strong performance across a range of materials. This, coupled with the ease of maintenance, made it an ideal addition to our fleet.”
In 2015 HAAS launched the 2nd generation edition of the TYRON. The TYRON 2.0 included an upgrade to the shredding chamber providing a more aggressive infeed and optimal clearance between the shafts and the outfeed belt, increasing the TYRONs throughput capabilities.
The HAAS TYRON had established itself as the leading slow-speed shredder in the market, and in 2021 the milestone of the 100th TYRON sold in the UK and Ireland was achieved. Long-standing HAAS and CRJ Services customer Binn Group Ltd purchased the milestone machine, their second TYRON.

2021 also saw the launch of the Hybrid TYRON. The Hybrid TYRON combines a small 43kW diesel engine with a 280kW electric motor. The diesel engine is utilised exclusively for operating the tracks, with the electric motor providing power to the rest of the machine, meaning there are no exhaust emissions during shredding.
CRJ Services supplied its first complete wood recycling plant to Mill Farm Recycling Ltd in 2019. Over its seven-year relationship with HAAS, CRJ Services (including
Matpro Machinery) has sold close to 150 TYRON (diesel and staticelectric) machines into the UK and Ireland, including 53 machines purchased for the CRJ Hire fleet.
“Our relationship with HAAS has been built on our common values of putting the customer first, and delivering quality, whether it be in the machinery we supply or the service levels we deliver. It has been a pleasure representing and growing the HAAS brand within the UK and Ireland, and we look forward to continuing this success.”

“With CRJ Services, we have an incredibly strong distribution partner. Since Matpro Machinery merged with CRJ Services, the strengths were combined and the success grew steadily. Excellent service and commitment are the characteristics of CRJ Services. We at HAAS are very proud to have CRJ Services as a longstanding partner on our side.”

Employee Showcase
Becky Curley Hires Manager
In this edition of our ‘Employee Showcase’, we highlight Becky Curley our Hires Manager here at CRJ Services.
Becky joined CRJ Services in January 2019 as a Hires Administrator. Being a novice to the waste and recycling industry, Becky impressed by quickly getting to grips with the wide range of recycling equipment within the CRJ Hire fleet. With such a variety of equipment types, Becky had a steep learning curve, understanding different waste applications and the best configuration of our machinery to deploy in order to meet the objectives of our customers.

The knowledge and experience that Becky has gained in a reasonably short period of time is invaluable and allows her to deliver first-class service and advice to our customers when arranging their hires.
In April 2021, Becky was promoted to Hires Manager. In the time Becky has held the role, she has developed and implemented her own processes that have significantly enhanced the service that our hire customers receive.
As part of her new role, Becky has also built a hires team with the addition of Lucy Nicklin, our Hires Administrator. Becky has been pivotal in training Lucy and imparting her knowledge and experience to make Lucy another key asset in the CRJ Hires business.
Why did you want to join CRJ Services?
I actually joined temporarily, covering maternity leave.
My sister, who was the Finance Manager at CRJ, had told me about the job, and it was a bit of a gamble as I had no knowledge of the industry, but it has worked out very well.
What is your favourite aspect of your role at CRJ?
The forward planning and making of proactive decisions to keep the hire fleet moving and meet our customers’ expectations.
What is a fact about you that not many people would know?
I used to be a lifeguard!
What is your favourite machine and why?
The Doppstadt SM414K trommel screener. This is the baby of the hire fleet and we only have one. It’s always out on hire and our customers love it!
We get a lot of requests to purchase it also but it’s not for sale!
What passions do you have outside of work?
Most of my time outside of work is focused on being a good mum. However, I do like getting stuck into some DIY and renovation projects at home.

How would you describe your team?
We are like family. We work very
hard together but also look out for one another.
What do you consider the biggest change you have seen in your time at CRJ?
The size of the hire fleet has almost doubled since I’ve been at CRJ, with over 110 machines now operating in the fleet. There has also been a significant increase
in awareness and processes for health and safety.

What three words would you pick to describe CRJ Services? Different every day.
If you could pick an actor to play you in a movie of your life, who would it be?
Michelle Keegan – because she’s a great actress!
“Becky is a star. She combines a great knowledge of the job with a professional and friendly approach to our customers. She has overseen significant growth in the number of machines in our hire fleet and has implemented robust processes to prepare us for future growth.”
ROB SYMONS | DIRECTOR AT CRJ SERVICES LTD
Manco Energy upgrades its chipping operation
with the JENZ HEM583Z
Manco Energy Ltd is a multi-faceted biomass company, based in East Yorkshire. Director Mick Richards started Manco Energy in 1998 and was an early adopter of biomass heating systems. Mick’s existing company, Mick Richards Agriculture, is a large straw contracting business and therefore has access to large quantities of straw bales. Manco Energy Ltd was therefore born out of a desire to find a solution to use straw bales as an efficient energy source.
Manco Energy formed a partnership with Linka Energy, a Danish manufacturer of biomass boilers, who have successfully developed a system that uses straw as a feed stock, alongside traditional fuel sources such as wood chip and wood pellets. Manco Energy became the sole UK importer of Linka biomass boilers and installs these systems across the UK, primarily to land-based industries.
Manco Energy has an established customer base and in addition to supplying and installing biomass boilers, Manco provides its customers with quality wood chip, and a contract chipping service. Manco had a Mus Max chipper that was beginning to show its age and required an upgrade. Having had previous experience with JENZ chippers, Manco engaged and instructed CRJ Services to supply
a brand new JENZ HEM 583Z PTO chipper.
The HEM 583Z is the mid-size PTO chipper within the JENZ range and boasts an aggressive upper drawin roller which pulls material into the 1200mm x 680mm intake opening. It can chip timber up to a diameter of 560mm, and thanks to its extralarge screening area and JENZ’s unique chipping drum configuration and tooling technology, it provides a very high-quality chip product. Manco Energy’s chipper is fitted with an ‘XL’ screen, which produces a G100 chip specification.

“I have been very happy with the performance of the chipper. It produces a highquality chip, which is ideal feedstock for our customers’ biomass boilers. This was our first time dealing with CRJ Services, and they have been great; very responsive and easy to deal with.”

“Congratulations to Manco Energy on their purchase. It’s been a pleasure dealing with Mick and his team, and it’s great to hear such positive comments regarding their experience with CRJ and the performance of the HEM583Z.”

HAAS introduces coarser shredding solution with the TYRONs new 6-6/4 shaft configuration
With many waste processors shredding material streams which are then picked by hand, HAAS Recycling System has introduced a new shredding chamber configuration to produce a coarser product, making it easier to pick reclaimable materials. Kemp Waste Management has been the first beneficiary of the new HAAS TYRON 6-6/4 and has seen a significant increase in material being recovered in its picking station.
In April 2020, KWM invested in a new static material recycling plant, consisting of a Kiverco KL 820 trommel screen fitted with a 20mm drum, a four-bay picking station and a density separator.
Previously, KWM used two excavators to pre-sort and reduce the size of incoming waste. KWM found that their two excavators couldn’t feed the new plant quick enough to meet its capacity.
Therefore, they required a slowspeed shredder that could feed their new plant with a consistent steam of material of up to 30 tonnes per hour, with a particle size that would enable efficient picking of reclaimable commodities such as wood, cardboard, and non-ferrous metals in their picking station.

400mm). With the rising value of reclaimable commodities, the increased picking efficiencies provided by the 6-6/4 will be an attractive option for many operators.”
KIEFER MORGAN AREA SALES MANAGER AT CRJ SERVICES LTD
“We have been delighted with the performance of the HAAS TYRON 6-6/4. It produces the right size material for our picking station without reducing the size too much.”
