The burgeoning genre of Reality Television has never been more crucial to home entertainment, nor more engaging to viewers. The perpetual production delays that have impacted scripted programming — from the pandemic lockdown to the strikes by SAG and the WGA to the financial challenges facing networks, studios and streamers alike — have made Real TV more plentiful and popular than ever.
Not convinced? Read the room.
From the long-range pop-culture impact of the sensational #Scandoval on Bravo’s “Vanderpump Rules” to the delicious duplicity that has drawn legions of reality fans to Peacock’s smash hit “Traitors,” audiences during the last year have been obsessed with unscripted storylines in the way they were hooked on the melodrama of the great prime time serials of the ‘80s.
Meanwhile, weekly viewings of MTV’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and its spinoffs remain surpassed only by sports programming in their power to draw crowds and bring people together across the country as they excitedly follow ongoing competitions.
New seasons of CBS’ “Survivor,” NBC’s “The Voice” and Fox’s “The Masked Singer” signal the start of new television seasons. ABC’s “American Idol” carries us through the spring. NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” remains the top television series of the summer.
All year round, in millions of homes across the country, the many popular series on HGTV, TLC and Food Network are always on. Their popularity is unwavering.
As always, there is much to celebrate about this dominant genre. The Critics Choice Association is pleased to honor the talent in front of and behind the cameras that keep Reality Television coming year to year.
Thank you for joining us as we present the 6th annual Real TV Awards.
The Critics Choice Association would like to thank our hosts
