HORIZONS AT CRISTO REY, SUMMER 2022
SEL (Social Emotional Learning) staff of a Licensed School Counselor and Wellness Coach Horizons at Cristo Rey Philadelphia kicked off on Monday, June 20th with 48 families who all came to us wanting the same thing: six weeks of joy for their children This responsibility is one that Cristo Rey does not take lightly, and with that in mind, we engaged these 48 young minds everyday in both academic and enrichment activities that we hope will have a lasting impact on their development as children. There was one guiding principle that was the common thread throughout: children cannot learn unless their basic needs and social emotional needs are being met. This principle led us to implement the following:

Weekly Farm Stand in partnership with Sharing Excess Wellness Playroom equipped with sensory and non sensory play items Weekly field trips which included visits to places like the African American Museum, the farm at W.B. Saul High School, and Elmwood Zoo

This summer, we were able to continue to build on the strong foundation that was set in our founding year (Summer 2021) with the following program elements:
Introduce quality Math and Engineering academic content for rising 4th graders and infuse more of this content for younger grades

Summer 2022 Highlights of protected academic time of paid staff were Black or Hispanic classes twice per week lunch, and snacks provided daily dance and yoga enrichment classes
Addition of a Clinical Social Worker to our SEL team to work with children and their families
Cristo Rey high schoolers served as mentors and paid Program Assistants

22-23 Horizons After School Program
We will kick off our second year of Horizons After School in September 2022! Our commitment to the children we serve is one that goes beyond six weeks in the summertime Cristo Rey Philadelphia will continue to do all that we can to support them both in the summer and in our after school program This school year, we will expand our after school program to three days per week and add an academic coach to lead our Literacy Support efforts, along with adding an enrichment partner We will continue to provide after school pick up transportation from our two neighborhood public schools, Kenderton and Bethune Elementary Schools Cristo Rey High School students will also continue to be mentors and tutors for our children in the after school program. We are looking forward to welcoming visitors throughout the school year to see this expansion of the mission of Cristo Rey in action.
