2021 IMPACT REPORT 1 | cristoreynetwork.org

MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP Throughout school year 2020-21, our national movement was all-in for Cristo Rey student success! As you’ll read in this Annual Report, because of our committed partners, the Cristo Rey movement continues to grow, delivering on our mission for our students and graduates. With the opening of Cristo Rey San Diego High School, all 37 schools began last school year deploying hybrid, virtual, or in-person instruction. Together, our national office and school teams were laser-focused on our efforts to ensure classroom and workplace excellence. Our Class of 2021 once again achieved 100% college acceptance, with 92% committed to fall enrollment. (Keep in mind that 92% college enrollment exceeds the college enrollment percentage of the highest income quartile students in the United States!) From the onset of the pandemic, the complexity of the work our school communities have undertaken cannot be overestimated. These challenging times remain with us, and the national office continues to partner with schools in excellence, innovation, and mutual accountability. To deepen the impact of our movement, in 2018 we embarked on our first-ever national fundraising campaign, Putting Education to Work, to design and scale high-impact, catalyzing programming and to seed an endowment. With a goal to raise $31.5 million by December 2020 to fuel needs over five years (2019-2023), we made history by exceeding our goal and securing $32.3 million in cash, pledges and planned gifts. Because of the generosity of our campaign donors, the national office was able to award $4 million in school grants and scholarships last school year, with $1 million dedicated to schools’ Corporate Work Study Program job

placements and remote work technology needs. With the financial loss our schools have faced through a pandemicrelated decrease in Corporate Work Study Program job placements, our philanthropic community locally and nationally stepped up. Our loving God has walked with us through these times, evidenced in the faces of the many generous investors who believe in our students and this mission. The unforeseen challenges which have emerged in the past year have expanded schools’ needs, which extend well beyond what our initial campaign funding can support. Recognizing the “fierce urgency of now”, fundraising is more essential than ever to ensure that our schools not only survive, but thrive, through this very long pandemic. As we continue to face uncertainties ahead, our national office and school communities remain resilient, innovative, and all-in! With gratitude for your sustained support and prayers,

Elizabeth Goettl President and CEO

REFLECTIONS FROM CHAIR EMERITUS We have all lived through some very difficult moments in the last year. It seems to me that it is almost as though God is knocking us on the head and telling us to pay attention. For me personally that is my most important take-away: what is God trying to tell us? What is the message in all this? On our part I think it is really important to pray that we hear and pay attention to whatever we are being called to. I am reminded of that phrase from the Cristo Rey Credo: our world doesn’t need a touch-up; it needs total renewal. We have to hold on tight to the fact that God is crazy about us, and none of what is going on denies that fundamental truth. May our present reality bring us back to what is basic: the fact that God is leading us and has not abandoned us. May we receive that message and embrace it! Viva Cristo Rey! John P. Foley, S.J. Chair Emeritus and Chief Mission Officer

CRISTO REY CREDO We all have to be about changing the way things are. Our mission is to make the Kingdom of God concrete in the here and now, in other words, not merely to make things slightly better but to effect transformational change at every level. At Cristo Rey, no one has ever taught that we should be content with doing something small. Our world doesn’t need a touch-up; it needs total renewal! We believe that God’s grace leads us not only to holiness, but also to greater intelligence, creativity, and resourcefulness in making the Kingdom come. And through the Spirit who lives in each one of us, we should expect, if we follow Jesus, to accomplish absolutely novel and startling things. The God we have studied in the Bible is one of boundless creativity, who wishes to communicate this same grace to each one of us. Made in His image, we are called to be co-creators of a totally new world. May we have faith in a dream so ambitious as to border on the delusional with a healthy disregard for conventional thinking. May our hope be so outrageously bold that we are afraid people will laugh at us if they knew what we hoped for! May our love lead us to fly in the face of human logic and make us instruments in helping our King establish His reign, to transform all things, to bring true and lasting happiness to all of America. The plan our King always said he would set in motion is indeed moving forward in the Cristo Rey Network. This movement is the work of our King, taking away the sins of frustrated potential, lack of opportunity, and paralyzing poverty. Our world is awash in grace. Grace makes us excited about the future. The Kingdom is coming and we are an essential part of that dream!

ACADEMICS EMERGING IN THE PANDEMIC Across the nation, the inability for Cristo Rey Network schools to deliver in-person classroom instruction for the full 2020-2021 school year hindered student learning. With minimal face-to-face interactions with students and their families, our schools adapted to the ever changing climate by bridging the communication divide. Management systems were implemented to provide academic and socio-emotional support; structured office hours and intentional instructional time were offered for remote and hybrid models; and extensive resources were deployed to meet students’ learning needs across the academic spectrum. To keep students on track to achieve college readiness by high school graduation, we invested in relevant and interrelated programming led by our Leading and Learning team to accelerate student formation and outcomes.

PUTTING MATH EDUCATION TO WORK

Math achievement is an integral component of college readiness for Cristo Rey students, allowing them to succeed at a college or university of their choice. With a commitment to equitable learning and to accelerate math achievement across our schools, we expanded our math initiative, Putting MATH Education to Work, launched in 2018. Generously funded by The Howley Foundation, more than half of our schools are now engaged in this social justice informed approach to transform math learning from a gatekeeper to a gateway. Through sustained professional development and instructional support designed and delivered by the Silicon Valley Math Initiative (SVMI), our math teachers and school principals are advancing achievement in mathematics for all students across the academic spectrum.

My classrooms are so different. The students are more engaged. They talk a lot, and I mean about math! To my surprise, they seem to enjoy mathematics, which is different than what they would say in former years.” - Cristo Rey math teacher

EXECUTIVE FUNCTION SKILL DEVELOPMENT

In partnership with Georgia Bozeday, Ed.D., Director of Educational Services at Rush NeuroBehavioral Center (RNBC), we established a model to synchronize learning from classroom and workplace settings through the implementation of RNBC-designed and research-validated Executive Functions curriculum. Teachers and Corporate Work Study Program staff from 11 Cristo Rey schools engaged in intensive professional development offerings to fully integrate and measure the executive function skills of our students.

Cristo Rey has been at the forefront in supporting students across the country. By continuing to meet this important mission, I am confident Cristo Rey will play a critical role in helping address the issues of equality and social mobility for many years to come. I am grateful for the opportunity to be involved.” - W. Nicholas Howley, Donor and Former Board Chair

CAREER PREPARED WITHOUT COMPROMISE

In workplaces across the country, the traditional concept of in-person work is challenged to adjust to the restrictions and demands of an economy affected by a global pandemic. Our Corporate Work Study Programs persevered through the school year as the operations and work environments at partnering businesses were unpredictable and evolving. To ensure continued workplace training excellence, our national office CWSP team collaborated closely with school CWSP teams to navigate remote student job placements, engage students in mentorship opportunities, and elevate students’ tangible skills through MS Excel training and certifications. Through the generosity of our philanthropic community, the national office launched a School CWSP Stability Fund that awarded nearly $1 million in school grants to fund student job placements and technology needs.

Understanding the implications that COVID-19 has had on the national landscape of college access and success, our national office College Initiatives team has designed and delivered new tools, resources, and professional development offerings for school teams on how to best tailor college counseling and alumni advising support for students and college enrollees. NEW! GRADFORCE ALUMNI TRACKING TOOL The capacity for our alumni advisors to communicate with and track the progress and achievement of our 6,100 college enrollees has been amplified by our new customized alumni tracking platform, Gradforce. Expanded university partners The national office established eight new University Partners in the 20202021 school year, meeting target priorities by region and diversity of selectivity to offer placement opportunities for students. Today, the Network has established a total of 67 University Partnerships, and our newest University Partners include:

DELOITTE FOUNDATION SCHOLARS During college decision season, the Deloitte Foundation made a $558,000 grant to provide $18,000 to each of 31 of 37 Cristo Rey schools with a graduating senior class for critical college scholarship funds. 71 students in our Class of 2021 have been named Deloitte Foundation Scholars to pursue majors in accounting, computer science, and/or data analytics.

In its mission to drive initiatives that help prepare the next generation of diverse business leaders, the Deloitte Foundation is proud to award these scholarships to Cristo Rey high school students. During the pandemic, the disruption to education has been dramatic, particularly for racially and ethnically diverse communities. We are excited to help propel these highperforming students on their journeys from high school, to college and career success.”

FAITH LEADERSHIP

Grounded in Catholic values, Cristo Rey schools participate in the teaching ministry of Jesus Christ, especially in their focus on serving students from families in the lowest income quartile. In order to operate as a Catholic school, each Cristo Rey school must have a Catholic sponsor or endorser. The following sponsors and endorsers of Cristo Rey schools ensure that the institutions are Catholic in identity and mission, true to the religious charism of the sponsor or endorser, and appropriately governed within a Catholic school context. On the day before Thanksgiving 2020, deep in the pandemic, the Presidents of our three Chicagoland area schools (Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, Cristo Rey St. Martin College Prep, and Christ the King Jesuit College Prep) and I met via Zoom with Chris and Kathy Perry of the Perry Family Charitable Foundation. Chris and Kathy surprised us all with a remarkable gift of $4 million, shared equally among the three schools and the national office. This gift was in honor of their nephew, Zach Perry, who died of leukemia earlier in the year. Our deep gratitude to the Perry family that Thanksgiving and throughout this year. - Elizabeth Goettl
