THE LEADERS OF TOMORROW Congratulations to the Class of 2019! Welcome to the Cristo Rey Jesuit High School alumni community—now more than 2,000 strong. As with each class for more than a decade, 100% of the Class of 2019 have been accepted this year to college—more than 120 colleges and universities across the country! Of our graduates, 15 have indicated they will be attending college out of state as far west as California (Loyola Marymount - Los Angeles) and as far east as Maine (Bowdoin College - Brunswick).

We also celebrate some of our alumni who have earned higher education degrees. Go Cristeros!

THANK YOU, PATRICE Cristo Rey extends our sincerest gratitude to Patrice (Purcell) DeCorrevont for chairing our Board for these past three years, and for her dedicated Board service for more than a decade.

Patrice’s relationship with Cristo Rey goes far beyond her Board service—her brother, Paul Purcell, has been a part of the CR family since the very beginning. When asked about Patrice’s leadership, President Antonio Ortiz says, “Patrice has continued in her brother’s footsteps and helped to shepherd Cristo Rey to our largest enrollment ever this past school year. You could say she one-upped Paul.” We are so grateful for Patrice and her whole family for championing Cristo Rey and we look forward to the years ahead as Patrice’s daughter, Caroline, has now joined the Leadership Advisory Council (LAC)—stay tuned!

DEAR FRIENDS, Graduation day at Cristo Rey is one of my favorite events of the school year – truly a day of celebration for our community in its broadest sense. This year’s commencement ceremony was especially exciting, as we welcomed Cesar Muñoz (CR ‘07) back to speak to the graduates. Cesar was recently named the Founding Principal for Cristo Rey Miami High School. He is our first alumni to take a leadership role at a Cristo Rey school, and we couldn’t be prouder. And let’s be real: Miami is a nice option!

In addition to Cesar and his family, the gym was packed with other alums cheering on the newest graduates, parents watching with pride as their sons and daughters walked across stage to receive a diploma, and work study supervisors celebrating all that their mentees accomplished over the last four years. Graduation reminds us of the many different supporters who make the Cristo Rey dream a reality. Thank you!

In this special issue of Las Obras, you will see what 23 years of investment can build. Now with more than 2,000 alumni, we see nearly 10% of them giving of their time and talent, and yes, even treasure. This past year we engaged dozens of people – including our alumni – to create a new and visionary strategic plan for Cristo Rey. In the years to come we will focus on building on the foundation of the past in order to build the future – El Futuro – for Cristo Rey in Pilsen.

Congratulations to our graduates, their families, and to you for making the spark that started a movement in Catholic education and workforce development a reality. You are the community who make Cristo Rey a success – now nearly 24 years in the making.

CWSP CELEBRATES 4-YEAR EMPLOYEES On May 15, Cristo Rey’s Corportate Work Study Program (CWSP) welcomed more than 170 guests at Cristo Rey for a luncheon to honor the seniors who have worked at their jobs all four years and the CWSP partners that hired them.

This year, we honored 64 seniors and welcomed a growing number of Cristo Rey alumni to the luncheon as supervisors— indeed a special kind of mentor for our students.

Seniors Armando and Margarita had an opportunity to voice their appreciation to their employers. “I wanted to say thank you to Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP for the opportunity to help me grow and gain very valuable work experience,” said Armando. “I also want to thank the people I worked more closely with like Yolanda and Brian. I am very grateful for the learning you helped me achieve.” Margarita simply said to her colleauges at Advanced Group, “I want to thank you for giving me a second home.”

CR ALUM NAMED PRINCIPAL AT CRISTO REY MIAMI Antonio Ortiz, president of Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Chicago said, “I'm so proud of Cesar and his wife Jackie (Hernandez) Muñoz (‘09), who both embody the values and spirit of Cristo Rey. Clearly, credit starts with his parents who instilled this dedication to Catholic education since their elementary school days. Cesar’s acceptance of this incredible opportunity at Cristo Rey Miami represents a deep commitment to our work and proves that Cristo Rey graduates are owning the next phase of our mission. This is truly a grace-filled moment for our school.”

Cristo Rey is proud to share the announcement of Class of 2007 alum, Cesar Muñoz, as the Founding Principal for Cristo Rey Miami High School. Cesar is the first Cristo Rey alum to serve as a Cristo Rey principal among the 35 college- and career-preparatory high schools that make up the growing Cristo Rey Network. Cristo Rey Miami is on target to open in summer 2020.

Cesar was the first of three Muñoz children to graduate from Cristo Rey Jesuit High School. Ana Muñoz is a graduate of the Class of 2014 and Carlos Muñoz graduated in 2015.

Cesar currently serves as the Dean of Students at Aspira Haugan Middle School, and as the math instructional lead for the network of Aspira middle and high schools in Chicago. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois-Chicago in Sociology and Latin American Latino Studies, and a master’s degree in Teaching from the Academy for Urban School Leadership at National Louis University. Cesar officially begins his term at Cristo Rey Miami in August 2019.

THE WORKS OF CRISTO REY Each day, Cristo Rey students and alumni live our mission as they work to become men and women for others through academics, sports, work study, extracurriculars, and faith.

Cristo Rey held its annual Career Conference for juniors on March 14.

Several CR Board Members, LAC Members, CWSP partners, and alumni (pictured above), volunteered their time to be part of various panel sessions to extend their knowledge and experience of their careers to our students. A keynote by Cristo Rey alum Yadira Vieyra (‘07), followed by a panel of fellow CR alumni, concluded the event.

On May 6, the team of students from Cristo Rey and Christ the King doing their work study at the Mayor’s Office were treated to breakfast with then Chicago Mayor, Rahm Emanuel, as a thank you for their hard work during his administration. The students were initially nervous, but quickly found their meeting enjoyable, saying he was relaxed as he spoke with them about their college and career aspirations.

Congratulations to sophomore Nelly Martinez who qualified to compete in the Girls Track & Field State Meet by besting her personal record in the discus event by 6 feet! She took 2nd place overall with a throw of over 60 feet at the IHSA Sectional Meet on Wednesday, qualifying her to represent Cristo Rey at the State Meet. Nelly is just the third student from Cristo Rey to qualify to compete for a state championship. She is the first in Cristo Rey history to qualify as a sophomore and the first girl to qualify from track and field. Congratulations, Nelly!

In April, the Cristo Rey Drama Club presented “The Iliad, The Odyssey, and All of Greek Mythology in 99 Minutes or Less,” a comedic retelling of classic Greek myths. Eight student-actors portrayed more than 100 different characters for a fun and fast-paced show!

The Personal Finance Club took 3rd place out of 33 teams at the Magnetar Capital Team Challenge competition at Navy Pier on April 27, earning $1,500 for Cristo Rey! At the competition, the team raised their trading portfolio from $100,000 to $129,544 - the highest total in the Club’s history. Congrats to the team and their moderator, math teacher Kate Schulte.

THE GARCIA BOY BOOK LAUNCH On April 10, Cristo Rey, along with Big Shoulders Books, hosted a gathering at the school to celebrate the release of The Garcia Boy, a memoir from the late Rafael Torch. Rafael Torch was a teacher and dean at Cristo Rey who died tragically of cancer in 2011 at the age of 36.

Each year, Big Shoulders Books publishes, free of charge, quality works of writing by and about Chicagoans whose voices might not otherwise be heard. Big Shoulders Books aims to make small but meaningful contributions to discussions of injustice and inequality in Chicago, a practice helped in large part by DePaul University students. This year’s entry by Torch is no exception.

The son of an undocumented Mexican immigrant, Torch struggled with addiction before he became a teacher at Cristo Rey. His memoir focuses on the murder of a star student—a symbol of the overwhelming challenges sons and daughters of immigrants face as they attempt to find a place in larger society.

The event on April 10 was a reunion of sorts for the Class of 2004. Old friends came back to the school to remember Torch, as well as their friend Sergio. After a dramatic reading of a passage of the book, there was a panel discussion with editor Miles Harvey, teacher Carolyn Alessio, CR alum Jaime Carrasco

(‘04), and Torch’s widow, Emily Olson-Torch. Many friends and former students of both Rafael’s and Sergio’s, shared stories and memories with the guests. Torch’s parents were also in attendance, and were touched by the stories told about their son.

¡VIVA! 2019 RAISES MORE THAN $625,000 FOR OUR STUDENTS! Cristo Rey’s May 2 signature event, ¡VIVA!, drew a lively crowd, with more than 400 friends and sponsors, who joined together to raise more than $625,000 in support of our school.

Together with five Cristo Rey alumni, who all worked at R.W. Baird & Co. during their years at Cristo Rey, incoming Board Chair, Dominick Zarcone presented the Rey of Hope Award to Paul & Patti Purcell and R.W. Baird & Co. “Together, by being incredible role models, Patti and Paul quietly make those around them better. They simply enrich lives and the workplaces and organizations they support. All of us at Cristo Rey are privileged to have them as part of our school community,” said Zarcone.

SUMMER PROGRAMS

You can help provide resources for Cristo Rey students to continue their learning over the summer months.

SUMMER BUSINESS TRAINING Each summer, with the help of volunteers from our corporate partners, Cristo Rey engages our entire incoming freshmen class in Summer Business Training, an intensive two-week workplace skill development training covering communication, technology, and workplace expectations. Students begin their work assignments in late August having received a foundational set of skills that will enable them to have a successful start at their first Corporate Work Study (CWSP) job. In addition to preparing students to begin work, Summer Business Training also immerses students in the culture of our school.

$400 will buy one student round-trip airfare to their staging city before departing on an all-expenses paid month studying abroad.

SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAMMING

$250 will provide room and board for one student on a service trip to Appalachia.

Summer Enrichment Programming prepares our students and their tightly knit families for the necessity of leaving home in search of educational opportunities, while providing enrichment opportunities to help them compete for admission and resources at more selective colleges. Last summer, more than 10% of students attended programs around the country and world.

SUMMER SERVICE PROGRAMS Last summer, 15 students participated in out-of-state service immersion programs through Nazareth and Bethlehem Farms, in West Virginia, and Jerusalem Farm in Missouri. These service-retreat experiences offer our students the opportunity to live simply in tight-knit community, while volunteering their days to build and repair substandard, rural homes for families in need – to remind students what it means to truly be “Men and Women for Others.”

$300 will send a busload of incoming freshmen downtown to learn about working in a corporate environment from volunteers at one of our corporate partners.
