ABOUT CRISTO REY BOSTON HIGH SCHOOL Mission Cristo Rey Boston is a Catholic high school exclusively serving families of limited economic resources. By offering a rigorous curriculum, a unique work-study experience, and the support of an inclusive community, we prepare our students to succeed in college and beyond with the core values of dignity, perseverance, growth, and generosity.

Vision Cristo Rey Boston is a caring, faith-based community dedicated to educating young women and men to become compassionate, responsible, lifelong learners. In partnership with our supporters, we close the opportunity gap for college bound students from under-resourced communities.

Core Values DIGNITY * PERSEVERANCE * GROWTH * GENEROSITY

A Message from the Board Chair Dear Friends of Cristo Rey Boston, Undoubtedly, this past year and a half have created unprecedented challenges and change in our world and no less so for Cristo Rey Boston High School. Not only did the pandemic affect in-person learning for our scholars, but as a workstudy high school, the closing of many corporate offices impacted our students’ internships and in-turn, created a substantial void in the CRB operating model. But with the same resilience demonstrated by our courageous students, our school persevered, buoyed by the incredible generosity of many benefactors who stepped up and participated in our “Bridge the Gap” campaign, as well as our annual Academic Signing Day event. We are incredibly grateful for your generosity. This was a year of change in other profound ways as well. Just prior to the pandemic, we were pleased to welcome new leadership with the addition of President Rosemary Powers and principal Tom Ryan. Taking on these daunting roles during such uniquely difficult times would have been a hurdle too difficult for many to overcome. Yet both Tom and Rosemary led our school with great distinction and incredible grace. And, as demonstration of that leadership, they have built a strong team of staff and teachers who are unwavering in their commitment to our students and our core mission. We are fortunate to have such dedication within the Cristo Rey Boston family.

Perhaps no group deserves more praise in overcoming obstacles than our students and teachers. Not a pandemic, quarantines, face masks, socially distanced seating, nor Zoom classes could stop this incredible group of people from delivering on the promise of a college preparatory education. At a time when many ponder what is “wrong with our world?”, they provided wonderful reminders of all that is right and good. “We are CRB!”, because of them. And finally, it is a great honor to assume the role of Chair of the Board of Trustees of Cristo Rey. I am greatly appreciative of the path that my predecessors, Harry Ebbighausen and Tom O’Neill have set for us. These two men have demonstrated unparalleled and unwavering support to this great institution, and it is a privilege for me carry this mantle. We are a better institution and better people for having had the benefit of their wisdom and guidance. Thank you for all that you do for Cristo Rey Boston and our students. As we look forward with great hope and eternal optimism, know that we are grateful for your continued support of our mission. With gratitude,

"This was a year of change in other profound ways as well."

Tom Guilfoile Board Chair

A Message from the President Dear Friends, At its core, the mission of Cristo Rey Boston is to address the still unresolved problems of racial equity, social justice, and income inequality by supporting our students in their quest for opportunity and achievement in college and life. We do this by offering a Catholic education that provides a rigorous college-prep curriculum, a valuable four-year work experience and an inclusive community that believes each student is unique and capable of success. Our challenge is to bridge the opportunity gap – to partner with our students and families as they journey towards a brighter future. This past year and a half has left me with an incredible sense of gratitude and a renewed commitment to our core mission of serving students from under-resourced families. I am humbled by the outpouring of support we have received. This past year, we learned a lot about our students and their resiliency. They come from the Boston area communities most highly impacted by the effects of the Covid19 pandemic. They are living through food and housing insecurity, parental unemployment, the assumption of adult responsibilities, including childcare and work to supplement family income. And yet despite these obstacles, they retain their optimism, their belief that if they put in the effort, they will attain a better future. And so, we have an obligation to provide them with the resources they need to ensure that better future. Last spring, 100% of our senior class graduated, and 100% were accepted into college. We were fortunate to host a beautiful in-person graduation for our students at St. Teresa of Calcutta Church to conclude their journey with Cristo Rey Boston High School. As you now read this, the college application cycle is beginning all over again. Our college counselors and volunteer mentors are working with seniors to ensure they

create a solid college list, have a strong essay, and are equipped to fill out financial aid forms. Later in the spring, they will help students and families parse through the financial aid packages and determine a student’s best fit college. The events of 2020-2021 put into stark focus the social inequities our nation faces, and the need to push ahead. To that end, in February 2021 we implemented a tuition free model by which all accepted students will receive a full tuition scholarship. Finances should never be an obstacle for aspirational students, and we have deep faith that our donors and Corporate Work Study Partners will continue to support our innovative program, making a Cristo Rey education attainable for qualified students. We are filled with a renewed sense of optimism. Our seniors will apply to college, our freshmen will learn how to balance a high school work load, our teams will compete on the playing fields, and more businesses will be able to welcome our students back into the workspace. We remain committed to our belief that each student is unique and capable of success. Thank you for your continued investment in the students of Cristo Rey Boston. In these extraordinary times we have been graced by your extraordinary support. We are deeply grateful. In peace,

Rosemary J. Powers President

Student Stories

from the Class of 2021 Alanna Marie Perez Cristo Rey Boston’s 2021 Valedictorian, Alanna Marie Perez, is onto her next chapter in life -- a freshman at Princeton University where she is majoring in biology. When asked to describe herself, she immediately commented, “I am a strong-minded woman who sets goals and goes for it.” Alanna is the first to admit that she was not born with this can-do attitude, instead it has been a journey to gain that confidence. Alanna’s motto is to be “perfectly imperfect,” reflecting that “coming from a public school I was used to being at the top of the class, but Cristo Rey Boston was harder, and I had to learn that I would make mistakes, but that I could grow from those mistakes." When not busy studying or working at Brigham and Women’s Hospital for her Corporate Work Study placement, Alanna was busy being an Admissions volunteer, an avid reader, and a star volleyball player. Prior to working as a patient transporter at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Alanna worked at the Catholic Schools Foundation and Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital. She attributes her corporate work study placements to her keen interest in medicine and plans to take a pre-med track in college and one day hopes to be an anesthesiologist. This fall, Alanna stepped on campus at Princeton University and is most excited about “meeting a diverse group of people and learning from their experiences.” She admits she is a bit “worried about the academic rigor” but is quick to add “I think that’s normal and I plan to connect with resources on campus to support my learning.”

Lufus Philip Lufus is now a Crusader at the College of the Holy Cross. Originally from St. Lucia, Lufus came to the United States as a 10-year-old, joining his mother who is a nurse. Recognizing that moving was a chance to receive a better education, Lufus acknowledges that the sadness of leaving behind his beloved extended family lingers. Lufus reflects upon his previous life and notes that the sacrifices made by his family motivate him to succeed, and his goal to have a successful career are driven in part by a desire to help his family in St. Lucia. Lufus is looking to his college experience on the Hill to help him narrow his career options. Lufus is grateful to the Corporate Work Study Program at Cristo Rey Boston for providing him with a glimpse into the real world. Through the work study program “I realized how hard the real world can be, but we all have the potential to overcome it.” Furthermore, the unique experience allowed Lufus to be more open with himself and others, he stated “I have made friends with so many people outside of my usual circle and they all offer something new and special.” Though Lufus still cherishes his memories of St. Lucia and his extended family, he is confident his move will set him and his family up for a brighter future. We look forward to seeing what is in store for Lufus.

ACCEPTANCES FOR THE CLASS OF 2021

CELEBRATING Bridge the Gap

Like so many other nonprofits and schools, Cristo Rey Boston’s largest fundraiser, Academic Signing Day 2020, was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. To make up for this $1 million shortfall, in September and October we conducted a virtual fundraising campaign. Through several key donations from the Catholic Schools Foundation, the Shah Family Foundation, and other private funders – we met this extraordinary fundraising goal of $1 million and concluded the campaign with a virtual video presentation.

Academic Signing Day

Historically, Cristo Rey Boston’s largest source of operating revenue is our annual Academic Signing Day event. This is an event in which we honor our senior class and celebrate their accomplishments, as well as honor a longtime supporter of Cristo Rey Boston. Due to the impacts of Covid-19, this event was cancelled in 2020 and our fall campaign, Bridge the Gap, was born. In 2021, we recognized our 2020 recipient, Nutter McClennen & Fish LLP, a longtime Corporate Work Study partner. Additionally, we honored Quincy Miller, President and Vice Chairman of Eastern Bank, and former Cristo Rey Board Chairman, Harry Ebbighausen. Given the impacts of Covid-19, it was critical we reached our $1 million goal to provide students with a tuition free opportunity focused on academic rigor and career skill development. We are

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE YEAR

Corporate Work Study Program Overview The 2021 Mark P. Harty Corporate Work Study Supervisor Award Recipient is Louvere Walker-Hannon of MathWorks The Mark P. Harty Corporate Work Study Supervisor Award was introduced at Academic Signing Day in 2017 to honor Mark P. Harty's life and legacy of service to others. Mark, a former managing partner at Morrison Mahoney, recognized the formational impact of the corporate work experience on Cristo Rey Boston high school students. Mark understood that interaction with inspirational role models and supportive mentors would help build confidence, competence, and the aspirations of students, which are critical to college and career success. The 2021 Mark P. Harty award recipient is Louvere Walker-Hannon of MathWorks. MathWorks has been a longstanding partner of Cristo Rey Boston and is a leading developer in mathematical computing software. Ms. Walker-Hannon supervised recent graduate, Chanelle Tubman. When asked why she thought Ms. Walker-Hannon deserved the award, Chanelle was quick to remark that “she introduced me to coding, a budding interest of mine, and helped me develop my skills. She really helped me blossom." Chanelle is now a Computer Science major at Framingham State University.
