LETTER FROM THE HEADMASTER Dear Loudoun Country Day School Community, On behalf of our entire faculty and administration, I thank all parents of current and former students, trustees, grandparents, alumni, and friends for your support for our 2015-2016 Annual Fund. I am delighted to report that, thanks to your generosity, our school has achieved another all-time Annual Fund record, raising over $480,000! This is an exceptional accomplishment for our school and greatly benefits our program and finances overall. At the same time, it is a powerful symbol of support for our school as a whole.

Our Annual Fund plays a vital role in our school. Over the years the Annual Fund has helped us create and expand our core academic program as well as our orchestra and band, our comprehensive technology and STEM initiatives, visual arts, library, and the range of our physical education and athletics offerings. I am excited that we are expanding our robotics program within our STEM curriculum this year.

I especially thank the members of our Development Committee, including Chair Brian Arezzo, Bill Tyrrell, Pam Maroulis, and Kay Nakamura, for their leadership, dedication, and overall support for the Annual Fund and for helping to make this our most successful campaign in total dollars raised. As I thank them, I also want to give special thanks to Susan Burkey, who, through her dedicated service as Development Assistant (one of her many areas of responsibility on our administrative team) over the past several years, made an immeasurable contribution to our success.

You will see in our list of supporters that we are recognizing donors who have contributed to our Annual Fund at least five and ten years consecutively. We are extremely grateful for their generous support over a number of years.

I also want to give special thanks to Stephanie Balderrama and Ginny Grivas, our Parents’ Association president and vice president for the past two years, for their dedication and tremendous efforts on behalf of our school. They co-chaired our 2014 auction at Westfields Hotel. They then created our online auction experience for 2015 and 2016. Their leadership made it possible for the Parents’ Association to present our school with a check for $70,000 at our final all-school assembly on June 6.

We held our Closing Exercises on June 10, celebrating the accomplishments of the Class of 2016. We congratulate these students on their achievements, and we wish each of them the best for success as they begin their high school careers.

Once more, I thank everyone who contributed to our 2015-2016 Annual Fund. Thank you for making a difference to our educational program and school as a whole!

WELCOMES ERIN MARSHALL

Mrs. Erin Marshall joined the LCDS Board of Trustees in July 2016. Erin has been a key contributor to the Parents’ Association and the LCDS community since her daughters (Emelia ‘17 and Julia ‘19) began their LCDS careers in 2008. She has consistently served as a PA representative for her daughters’ classes, held chair positions a number of years for Bingo, Fall Teacher Appreciation, Grandparents’ Day, Book Fair, and served as a member of other event teams. She also served on the Development Committee of our Board of Trustees and worked on the Annual Fund from 2011 through 2013. Erin is a graduate of American University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and a minor in Business Administration. She has over twenty-five years of experience in sales and marketing, with a particular expertise in the insurance industry. In 2007, Erin joined the Iroquois Group as a Regional Manager to focus on sales planning and execution, marketing, strategic planning, forecasting, staff development and overall relationship management. It is a pleasure to have Erin as a new member of our Board of Trustees.

Dr. Jill McCabe, who joined our board of trustees in 2009, concluded her service as Emeritus Chair on June 30, 2016. Our board benefited greatly from Jill’s wisdom and dedication throughout her years of service. Jill served on our Development Committee, Recruitment and Retention Committee, Committee on Trustees and Leadership, and our Executive Committee.

We thank Jill for her dedicated service, outstanding leadership, and overall commitment to our school. Although no longer a member of our board, we are fortunate that she will remain a current LCDS parent during her daughter Maggie’s final two years in our program, and we look forward to seeing her often.

Aileen Hawkins joined our administrative team on August 15 as Director of Development. The Director of Development is responsible for a range of activities and functions that support the overall advancement of our school, most specifically through our annual fund, key events, and tasks and activities that promote and benefit LCDS. Aileen is an immensely talented educator and administrator. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Princeton and Master’s degree from Brown University.

Aileen joined the LCDS staff after serving as the Upper School Innovation Coach at The Potomac School in McLean, where she also developed Potomac’s entrepreneurship program. Before moving to Virginia two years ago, Aileen was the Dean of Academic Technology and taught English at Sage Hill School in California.

She also collaborated with Sage Hill’s Development and Marketing departments on a range of projects and initiatives.

Aileen brings a range of talents and skills, ideas, energy, and dedication to our school and her new position.

Her experience, efforts, and enthusiasm will reflect our mission, support our program, and augment our finances.

Also a parent in our school, Aileen and her husband Erik have two charming daughters. Grace '19 is a sixth grade student, and Eve '21 is in fourth grade.

It is a joy and honor to welcome Aileen to her position as Director of Development and to our administrative team.

Ms. Elissa Casiano is our new fifth grade teacher and will partner with Ms. Deana O’Dell. In addition to her BA in Psychology, Elissa has also earned a Master's degree in Childhood Education and Students with Disabilities. Since achieving these qualifications she has also continued her own education in fields such as Data Analysis, 21st Century Skills in the Science Classroom, and Project Based Learning & STEAM to name but a few. Miss Casiano has excellent experience and is a great addition to our fifth grade program.

Mrs. Victoria Cunningham is our new lower school enrichment teacher. Victoria has an undergraduate degree in Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies from James Madison University. She also earned a Master of Arts degree in Elementary Education from James Madison University. Victoria brings extensive lower school teaching experience from five different elementary schools, which gives her a strong foundation for her position as our lower school enrichment teacher. We are excited to have Victoria as a new member of our faculty.

Mrs. Mary Ann Hinko is joining Mrs. Fox and Mrs. White as the newest member of our fourth grade team.

She has a BA in Elementary Education and Spanish and has been teaching upper elementary grades for over two decades. She knows the educational and social expectations of this age of students well and she is excited about our philosophy of nurturing our students to achieve their potential. Mrs. Hinko has outstanding experience and brings excellent skills to our fourth grade program.

Mrs. Janet Jones is our new lower school resource teacher but is not new to LCDS. She did an outstanding job for the past two years as Shonne Jurin’s second grade assistant. Janet has a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from West Virginia University and a Master of Education degree in Special Education from James Madison University. She has been a special education teacher at three different elementary schools. We are grateful for all that Mrs. Jones will do to serve our students and program in her new role.

Mrs. Mary Miller is a new prekindergarten assistant who will be working with Mrs. Licht. Mary has held a number of interesting positions in her professional career, including her tenure as a fourth grade teaching assistant at Crozet Elementary School. In addition, she has been a fitness and gymnastics coach for children.

In total, Mary has more than 24 years of experience teaching children of all ages. She is a talented and enthusiastic educator who enjoys working with children. Mary is going to bring great value to Mrs. Licht’s prekindergarten class.

Mrs. Dawn Sullivan is our new Business Office assistant to Business Manager Kim Martino. Dawn has a BS in Accounting and also has an MBA in Finance. She has worked as an accountant for the past nine years.

Prior to that, she worked as a financial analyst for several companies. She is excited to be working for an organization with such an important mission!

And: Mrs. Annie Do joined our administration during the year last year in a part-time position managing our lunch program. She is continuing in that position again this year.

Mrs. Kristen D’Agostino joined our administration during our school year last year in a part-time capacity supporting our admissions and registration processes. She is continuing in that role again this year.

Mrs. Amy Franzer joined our prekindergarten faculty as Mrs. Horvath’s assistant in December 2015.

Mr. Joe Kaylor joined LCDS as our Director of Maintenance in March 2016.

“It was the best of times…..” 2016 produced several “bests” for our school based on enthusiastic support from local readership surveys for our school.

To put the contests in context, the former publication Leesburg Today ran a “Best of” poll for many years, which gave readers a chance to vote for everything from their favorite barbecue restaurant to their favorite dentist. In between was always a “Best Private School” and “Best Teacher” category. Over the years, several of our teachers have been voted best in this poll, but in every poll we can remember, with one exception, over twenty-five years, we placed first. Hence we have the banner “Voted Best Private School for Over Twenty Years”.

In 2016 the Loudoun Times Mirror took up the charge with this poll and inaugurated their “Loudoun Times Mirror 2016 Best of Loudoun” poll. In this new version, LCDS was awarded “Best Private School” and the "Best Teacher" runner-up was awarded to Angie Cross.

Loudoun Now launched its new publication a year ago and also inaugurated a "Loudoun's Favorites" Readers Poll. LCDS was awarded "Favorite Private School"; "Favorite Preschool"; "Favorite Coach, Cathy Fernandez"; "Favorite Music Educator, Sonja Jewell"; and "Favorite Teacher", Angie Cross.

Washington Family, a magazine which encompasses most of the Washington, DC, metropolitan area, also runs an annual poll. Their “Best for Families” 2016 poll resulted in five wins for LCDS: "Best Private School" (overall); "Best Preschool"; "Best Foreign Language Instruction"; "Best STEM Instruction"; and "Best Music Instruction."

Finally, in Posh Seven’s 2016 “Best of Suburbia Kids”, Loudoun Country Day School won “Best Private School K-8."

We are very grateful to be recognized in these publications, as we strive to do our best in all areas while evolving and improving each year. To be acknowledged is rewarding; however, credit also goes out to our many families who support us, especially by sharing their children, but in so many other ways, including voting in these polls. Were there a category for “Best School Families”, our school would win by a landslide!

CO N T I N U E D E X PA N S I O N O F S T E M P R O G R A M S : ROBOTIC S We have added engaging Robotics learning tracks to our lower and middle school flagship STEM program. Throughout the Robotics curriculum, students collaborate with their peers, develop critical thinking skills and explore programming concepts while working with or creating robotics.

The curriculum begins in our lower school. Kindergarten students learn basic programming and problem solving while working with BeeBots, robots designed for little hands and big imaginations. In second grade, students continue to explore robotics with Lego WeDo education kits.

These beginner robotics kits introduce students to the engineering design process and icon-based programming. In fifth grade, students take on more challenging and robust EV3 Lego robotics to complete a series of tutorial projects utilizing a variety of sensors and icon-based programming.

Robotics education continues in the middle school. Sixth grade students create and program rovers to collect specimens from distant planets with Lego NXT kits, while seventh graders explore programming concepts and robotics engineering with Ozobots and Arduino Uno projects. The program culminates in eighth grade when students design and program VEX robots to carry out a series of challenges. Middle school students may also join after-school robotics teams that compete with peers from around the corner and around the world.

The LCDS student who progress through our lower and middle school programs will graduate with well-practiced problem solving and collaboration skills, and a wealth of project-based, authentic STEM learning experiences that will rival or exceed those they will encounter in high school.

We are excited about the continued evolution of our STEM programs, including our robotics program. Special credit goes to Vicki Knickerbocker, pictured below, our Director of Instructional Technology, for her vision and commitment to making this important area of our program the very best anywhere.

PARENTS' ASSOCIATION PA EL EC T S P R E S I D EN T A N D V I C E P R E S I D EN T

It is a pleasure to introduce our newly elected Parents' Association President Jennifer Arezzo and Vice President Beth Sargent. Jennifer and Beth have been dedicated and supportive parents since their children first enrolled in our program.

Both have served on committees for numerous major Parents' Association events and activities throughout their years at LCDS. Jennifer has chaired Bingo Night the past three years. This past summer, Jennifer and Beth played a major role in our Uniform Exchange program, making it a big success for our parents. They both have served on Fall Fun Fair, Teacher Appreciation Week, and Auction committees.

Jennifer and her husband Brian have two sons in our program. Cameron '19 is in sixth grade and Brendan '22 is in third grade.

Beth and her husband Doug have a daughter in our program. Macy Kate '21 is in fourth grade.

We are grateful to Jennifer and Beth for their willingness to serve in these two important leadership roles on our Parents' Association.

It is a pleasure to write an ebullient thank you to two remarkable people for their extraordinary efforts, remarkable talents, and inspiring dedication.

Three years ago, Stephanie Balderrama and Ginny Grivas stepped forward to co-chair our Gala auction event that year. They did a magnificent job creating an enjoyable and memorable special evening for our community.

That same spring they were elected president (Stephanie) and vice president (Ginny) of our Parents’ Association, and they dedicated themselves to the leadership of our Parents’ Association for the next two school years. Their term ended June 30, 2016.

It is no easy feat to thank Stephanie and Ginny sufficiently for their constant energy, enthusiasm and tireless efforts throughout their leadership of our Parents’ Association the past two years. In addition to providing support for every major Parents’ Association event during their tenure, they also took on the major initiative of creating an online auction experience and community social as an alternative to our traditional auction.

These are a few among their contributions to our school. Above all, we thank Stephanie and Ginny for their indomitable spirits and inspiring service.

L C D S P A R E N T S ’ A S S O C I AT I O N R E P O R T 2 0 1 5 -2 0 1 6 S C H O O L Y E A R For 2015-2016, the Parents’ Association Board members consisted of President Stephanie Balderrama; Vice President, Ginny Grivas; Head Room Representative, Rachele Nestor; Secretary, Kathy Romedy; and Treasurer, Barbara Hamidi. Once again the key focus of the PA was to delight our children while encouraging parents to be involved and engaged. Our continued message to our fellow parents (both new and old) was to get involved, support the school, and help cultivate the experiences that shape our children’s lives and memories.

We had another outstanding year of events, produced with the steadfast support of some exceedingly dedicated parents. These events included the exceptional Fall Fun Fair, an exciting Teacher Appreciation Week coupled with two fantastic faculty luncheons, the dazzling Arabian Nights Bingo Night, the enchanting Father-Daughter Dance, the electrifying Mother-Son night of fun, the magnificent Community Social at Stone Tower Winery, and the delightful Grandparents and Special Friends spread!

Additionally, through the tremendous support of the faculty, parents and students, the PA’s Online Auction was again a huge success – raising a remarkable $70,000 for the school! Special thanks to those extraordinary individuals who were charged with creating such unforgettable experiences – namely Irene Stout and Melissa Adamson (Our Fall Fun Fair Heros!); Lauren Bermudez (Our Brave and Imaginative Newcomer!); Jen Arezzo (The Bingo Queen!); Jennifer Schneider and Sara D’Alatri (Our Amazing Dynamic Duo!); Kristen D’Agostino, Angela Leuck, and Kim Latkiewicz (Our Outstanding Social Trio!)

And for those incredible, steadfast volunteers, who tirelessly donated themselves to these events and more, I’d like to personally thank – Ginny Grivas, Donna Moreau, Beth Sargent, Heather Hughes, Kathy Romedy, Rachele Nestor, Chandra Bittner, Erin Marshall, Nancy Mendez, Kay Nakamura, Jenna Choi, and Andre Balderrama – for their above and beyond contributions.

It has been my great privilege serving as your PA President for the past two years. Getting to know the kids, parents and school at such an intimate level has only strengthened my gratitude for the opportunity my own children have and experience thanks to this extraordinary community.

Best of luck to our stellar new President, Jen Arezzo and Vice President, Beth Sargent. Having been in their shoes, I have a profound new respect for how much each individual’s contributions make a difference – no matter how big or small. FIRST LCDS GRADUATE RON CAMPBELL V I S I T S O N M AY 1 7, 2 0 1 6 RANDY HOLLISTER

On Tuesday morning, May 17 at around 11:00, we were treated to a visit from an alumnus whose last trip to LCDS was during our 50th anniversary celebration in the spring of 2004. I happened to be in the foyer, near our compass rose when I saw our guest approach the doors at our main entrance. I recognized Dr. Ron Campbell immediately. He and his wife Vicky were on a trip to Northern Virginia from New Jersey. They were delighted to stop by to say hello.

Ron Campbell was our first and only graduate in the spring of 1954, the inaugural year of our school. Mrs. Newcomb, headmistress, created a ninth grade course of study for him. Following his year at LCDS, Ron went on to Deerfield Academy, then to Harvard University.

It was a pleasure to see Ron and Vicky and to show them around our educational home.

Imagine how different it had to feel to Ron, whose memory of the LCDS facility he knew was one room of the former Community College building in downtown Leesburg on Market Street.

He and six other students comprised the entire student body that year.

As we walked to the various classrooms of our beautiful building, I shared information about various areas of our program. Ron and Vicky listened with great interest and asked many questions.

We also talked about the past. Ron spoke of Mrs. Newcomb with inspiring admiration and appreciation. She was his model educator, and he was immensely grateful for her dedication. To listen to Ron speak of her influence on him, one would conclude that he had been under Mrs. Newcomb’s tutelage for a number of years.

We had fun sharing memories from our 50th anniversary celebration in 2004. At that time, I was having parallel conversations with Ron and Mrs. Newcomb, then age 87, encouraging them to attend this milestone in our school’s history.

Independently, each agreed to attend if the other would. I will always remember the excitement in their voices when I told them that they each had set the same condition of the other for attending.

And they both did.

Ron gave Mrs. Newcomb credit for making the more heroic journey to our celebration. Living just south of Charlottesville at the time, she boarded a bus and rode nearly three hours to Leesburg.

Fifty years after spending one year as teacher and student, each was willing to make the tremendous investment of time and effort to see and honor the other. At our evening celebration, Ron publicly paid tribute to Mrs. Newcomb, expressing his admiration and appreciation for all that she did for him that year, half a century ago, as his chief educational guide. It was a humbling and inspiring example of the profound influence teachers can have on their students, and the depth of gratitude students feel towards their teachers. In our school’s very first year, Mrs. Newcomb and Ron Campbell established the model that has become our standard. I am grateful to Ron for visiting us this past May and for serving as a reminder of the vital work teachers do every day.

ALUMNI ACCOMPLISHMENTS

KURT MCHENRY ‘15 WINS UNITED WORLD WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP IN RUSSIA After an impressive spring 20152016 wrestling season, culminating in winning the Maryland State Title as a freshman, Kurt McHenry ‘15 had an exciting summer of training and competition that resulted in yet more impressive accomplishments including earning a spot on the USA Cadet Wrestling National Team after qualifying for the United World Wrestling Freestyle Cadet Nationals World Championships in September in Tbilisi, Georgia, in Russia.

The phenomenal news is that Kurt advanced through the competition among wrestlers from 16 countries to the gold

medal match – and he won! In doing so, Kurt McHenry became the first Cadet World Champion of the day for the United States.

Drawing from an article by Richard Immel in USA WRESTLING, “The electric Kurt McHenry stole the show at New Sports Palace…taking on Cadet European champion Mahir Mammadzada of Azerbaijan in the 42 kg/92.5 lbs. gold medal match.

Kurt jumped out to an early 4-0 lead courtesy of two slick takedown conversions. Mammadzada returned with four points of his own to lead McHenry on criteria, 4-4, late in the match. With less than five seconds

remaining McHenry exposed his Azerbaijani foe from neutral to go ahead for good. After a lost challenge from Mammadzada, Kurt won the match by a final 7-5 tally.”

Commenting on his gold medal match victory, Kurt commented: “I was just focused. I didn’t want to come out here and play any games. I wanted to get the job done. He then added, “To be the best you have to beat the best.”

We are ecstatic to celebrate Kurt’s phenomenal achievement, and we wish him continued success at St. Paul’s School in Maryland.

ALEX AUST ‘05 SPEAKS TO MIDDLE SCHOOL NOVEMBER 13, 2015; SELECTED FOR US WOMEN’S NATIONAL LACROSSE TEAM Loudoun Country Day School alumna Alex Aust ‘05 delighted our enthusiastic middle school students by returning to our school last November to speak with them about her academic and athletic career. She attended our program from second through eighth grades and enjoyed our academics, the arts, and athletics throughout her career. She remarked that she continues, to this day, to lean on the foundational lessons she was taught in our program.

After graduating from LCDS in 2005, Alex attended the Bullis School in Potomac, MD where she excelled in academics as a National Honor Society Scholar and in athletics as a 4-year varsity athlete in field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse. Alex earned all-league honors in all three sports. Alex particularly excelled in lacrosse at Bullis, earning First Team All-America status in her junior and senior high school years, and she was recruited to play Division I lacrosse at the University of Maryland.

Alex returned to our school in the fall of 2008 for an allschool assembly to sign her letter of intent to attend Maryland and play in their Division I women’s lacrosse program. We were honored to be part of that big moment in Alex’s life. Her entire family attended the assembly.

At Maryland Alex earned 6 ACC Titles and a National Championship in 2010. She holds numerous career and single-game records for assists and points during her collegiate career, including 2013 Attacker of the Year, Tewaaraton Award Finalist, and First Team All-American.

In 2016, Alex was selected for the US

Women’s National Team and is currently training for the 2017 World Cup in England. This past year she was selected 5th overall in the inaugural draft for the professional United Women’s Lacrosse league.

Championships before becoming a principal in Finish Line Lacrosse, where she is currently building a premier lacrosse training business.

This summer Finish Line Lacrosse held a summer camp at our school.

Alex’s impressive achievements have drawn considerable interest from professional organizations who want to sponsor her. She has been a sponsored athlete with Under Armour for several years as an integral part of the company’s initiatives for women athletes

We are thrilled to follow Alex’s career as a world-class athlete and are proud to claim her as an alumna of Loudoun Country Day School. In addition to her extensive a cco m p l is h m e nt s , Alex is an inspiration to girls playing lacrosse everywhere, and she is an example of what talent, determination, and skill can produce. We wish Alex the best in all of her endeavors.

LCDS CLASS OF 2016 GRADUATES Bradley Barrett is one of six students who enrolled in our program in prekindergarten.

Brad’s favorite academic subjects are math and English, and his favorite activities are playing the viola, basketball, and hanging out with his friends.

Brad is also an outstanding basketball player whose great leadership as a co-captain and excellent play all season helped our team win the Talon Tournament and earned Brad the honor of being named a recipient of the Todd Bohrer Memorial Award. Looking to the future, he has thoughts of becoming an architect or marine biologist. Brad is now attending Middleburg Academy.

Allison Eisert also began her LCDS career in prekindergarten. Allison enjoys playing the trumpet, balancing equations in chemistry, singing, solving rubik’s cube, knitting, swimming, and hanging out with friends. Her favorite subjects are science, English, band, and art. Allison has earned MVP for band three times, is a three-year member of Show Choir, has been active in Student Council, a member of our swim team, and a participant in knitting clubs. Allison was presented the Philip E. Dupont Memorial Award at graduation. She is interested in pursuing a career in science.

Allison is attending Broad Run High School.

Autumn Hall also enrolled in prekindergarten. An exceptional student, citizen, and artist, she plays the piano, violin, guitar, and drums, and sings beautifully. Autumn enjoys dance, basketball, softball and lacrosse. In sixth grade, Autumn placed 9th in the Hill School Mile Run and was awarded the Junior National Ballroom Dance Champion.

Autumn, a basketball co-captain, was selected co-MVP for her outstanding leadership and play. Science and English are Autumn’s favorite academic subjects. She is interested in studying film and acting, and aspires to be an actress, film producer, or attorney. Autumn is attending Briar Woods High School.

Thomas Herrick also enrolled in our program in prekindergarten. A highly intelligent and respectful young man with a great sense of humor, Thomas is a responsible, hardworking, talented, and motivated student who enjoys learning and excelled in all academic areas of our program throughout his LCDS career. He is especially talented in math and science and has an aptitude for grasping new concepts quickly. His high math ability helped him achieve the top 10% among all 120,000 students taking the Math Olympiad challenge. Thomas has joined his older sister Daphne at Flint Hill School in Oakton.

Denise Loewinger also joined our program in her prekindergarten year. Denise is a talented artist who creates exceptional work. She also plays the guitar and speaks Russian.

Denise enjoys swimming and has developed into a strong competitor. She earned a spot on the highest group on her swim team outside of LCDS. Civics and English are Denise’s favorite academic subjects.

She has enjoyed being part of our Swim Team, community service activities, Kindergarten Helpers, and Sign Language Club. She would like to either be a writer or work in a medical field. Denise is attending Middleburg Academy.

Owen Riddle also enrolled in our program in prekindergarten. Owen enjoys playing the cello, basketball, football, and lacrosse. Owen was an outstanding co-captain of our green basketball team this year. His scoring and rebounding played a major role in our Talon Tournament wins and championship, and his overall play earned him the Todd Bohrer Memorial Award, along with Brad, Beau, and Nick. Owen has achieved the honor roll a number of times throughout his LCDS career.

His favorite academic subject is Civics. Owen is attending the Collegiate School in Richmond.

Christian Cornecelli began his LCDS career in kindergarten. Christian is an enthusiastic learner, a good person, and a leader. He was a captain for both our soccer and tennis teams.

Christian was an excellent member of our green basketball team this year. His favorite academic subject is civics. His essay for the Tomb of the Unknowns placed in the top fifteen in our middle school. Christian enjoys playing the saxophone and earned a band MVP this trimester. He can imagine doing something with music professionally as a career. Christian is attending Bishop O’Connell High School in Arlington.

Wes MacIntyre also enrolled in our program in kindergarten. He enjoys learning and has high academic aptitude across the disciplines but especially in math. He has built a computer and also enjoys science and civics. Wes has earned recognition for his strong performances in the Math Olympiad and the National French Examination.

Wes enjoys playing tennis, running, and basketball. He played extremely well for our boys green team in our Talon Basketball Tournament last February. He would like to be a doctor and own his own medical facility. Wes is now attending Flint Hill School.

Jordan Martin began her LCDS career in kindergarten.

Jordan is an excellent student and athlete. She is accomplished in basketball, volleyball, and tennis. In volleyball, Jordan has earned distinction by making it to the second highest level of team in the Northern Virginia Volleyball League. Jordan was active in Student Council, including as a representative in fourth grade. She also participated in our leadership development program in sixth grade.

Jordan’s favorite academic subject is science. She would like to become a computer programmer or video game designer. Jordan is attending Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax.

George McCabe also entered our program in kindergarten.

He is a talented, dedicated, and conscientious student, citizen, musician, and athlete.

An exceptional swimmer and runner, George has won numerous swimming awards and has set many records. George contributed greatly to the success of our green basketball team this year. His favorite academic subjects are civics and English. A strong geography student, George was our 2016 Geography Bee champion and qualified to participate in the state Geography Bee. He is thinking about becoming a doctor or politician. George is attending Choate Rosemary Hall School in Wallingford, Connecticut.

John Dennis Donovan enrolled in our program in first grade. John Dennis earned music MVP a number of times and was a three-year member of Show Choir. John Dennis served as Student Council president last year and served as an ambassador at a number of admissions open houses. A great athlete, John Dennis was a formidable rebounder and defender on our green basketball team. He performed brilliantly in several Variety Shows during his LCDS career. John Dennis is interested in studying engineering, and his dream is to attend MIT. John Dennis is attending Georgetown Preparatory School in Bethesda, Maryland.

Barrett Harrington enrolled in our program in second grade.

She is an outstanding student, citizen, artist and athlete. Barrett plays the piano and drums and is accomplished in lacrosse, cheerleading, and running. Barrett earned first place at the state level and second place at the national level in the 2015 NHD competition for her website on Sir Nicholas Winton. This year she earned 3rd place at the district level for her documentary about the Apollo-Soyuz Mission. She has thoughts of being either a teacher or a marine biologist.

Barrett has joined her brother Jack at Flint Hill School.

LCDS CLASS OF 2016 GRADUATES Mikayla Connolly entered LCDS in third grade. She won first place at the 2015 district regional National History Day Competition for her website on Nelson Mandela. She was a member of Student Council from third to seventh grade, and won the election for Student Council vice president in seventh grade. As an eighth grader, Mikayla earned an Art Award, the STEM Design Challenge Award with Barrett, and special recognition for achievement in Spanish.

She also earned the Headmaster’s Prize at graduation.

She is considering a career in journalism or as an editor. Mikayla is attending The Madeira School.

Luke McNabb also enrolled in our program in third grade. An outstanding student and citizen, Luke also excels at golf.

He participates in competitive tournaments, has won numerous MAPGA events, and is the Loudoun Junior Golf Association (LJGA) tour champion.

His favorite academic subjects are math, science, and English. He received an Art Award at our end-of-year assembly.

Luke would like to be a professional golfer or an engineer.

He recently wrote: “LCDS has been an incredible experience for me.” Luke is continuing his education and love of golf at Woodberry Forest School, in Orange, Virginia.

Nate Wylie also entered LCDS in third grade. Nate is an outstanding young man with a delightful and witty sense of humor. Nate was a consistent honor roll student throughout his LCDS career. He was a valued member of our green basketball team, demonstrating an excellent attitude throughout our season. Nate’s favorite academic subjects are math and English. He was an enthusiastic participant in Music Club and German Club.

His abundant talents, great personality, and responsible work ethic will bring him success in whatever he chooses to do. Nate has joined his sister Izzy at Loudoun County High School.

Henry Brewer entered LCDS in fourth grade, remained two years, moved to Australia, then returned to us midway through this past year. An honor roll student, Henry enjoys playing the guitar, tennis, and basketball, and watching ESPN. Henry joined our green basketball team in January and contributed immediately to our success, through his athletic abilities, outstanding attitude, and team spirit. He was thrilled to help his team achieve a Talon Tournament championship. He likes all subjects but especially enjoys math and civics. He has numerous ideas for a future career. Henry is continuing his education at Middleburg Academy.

Spencer Hutchens enrolled in our program in fifth grade.

Spencer consistently earned high grades throughout his LCDS career. He qualified for the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth programs and was a finalist in our Geography Bee. Interested in many disciplines, Spencer’s favorite subjects are math, science, and physical education. He was an enthusiastic participant in Student Council, German Club, and Movie Club. Although not sure what area he would like to focus on, he has thoughts about becoming an officer in the United States Air Force. Spencer is continuing his education at Rock Ridge High School.

Kenny Ambiso is one of six students who entered our program in sixth grade. An outstanding student, citizen, and athlete, Kenny’s favorite subjects are math, science, technology, music, and physical education. Accomplished in Tae Kwon Do, he has earned a black belt and has competed successfully in numerous tournaments. Kenny was voted by his classmates as the best debate performer on the second night of our 8th grade Civics Debates. Kenny earned a 2016 Leadership Certificate and enjoyed Eagle Time Community Service last year.

He is interested in becoming a software developer. Kenny now attends Woodberry Forest School.

Nick Barenz also enrolled in sixth grade. A responsible, talented, and dedicated student, citizen, and athlete, he enjoys all subjects, though his favorite academic disciplines are math and science. Nick was a major contributor to the success of our green basketball team last season. His tremendous hustle and outstanding play helped us win the Talon Tournament and earned him co-honors of the Todd Bohrer Memorial Award. Nick enjoyed participating in Student Council and serving as an assistant coach in physical education.

He is thinking about pursuing a career in engineering. Nick is now attending Dominion High School.

Aiush Basnet also entered our program in sixth grade. A talented young man, Aiush is creative and artistic. He enjoys drawing, painting, and math.

Aiush has earned awards for his work in math, art, and creative endeavors. His broad interests are reflected in his enjoyment in science, math, music, Spanish, art, civics, and English. Auish enjoyed cleaning up and participating in the Thrift Shop during Eagle Time Community Service. He has a wide range of interests and is thinking about a possible career as an architect or an engineer. Aiush is now attending EF Academy in Thornwood, New York.

Naya Duggal also enrolled in sixth grade. A kind and respectful young lady, and hardworking and talented student, Naya’s favorite subject is math.

Mrs. Sheatsley commended Naya’s impressive attitude, dedication, and work ethic in preparing herself to move from prealgebra to algebra this year. She gave her best efforts every day to engage, understand, and master the material. As the year continued, Naya contributed more and more to class discussions on specific math concepts, operations, and problems. She has many interests and is thinking about becoming a computer programmer and video game designer. Naya is attending Riverside High School.

Caili Shanahan also began in our program in the sixth grade. An accomplished student, Caili’s favorite subjects are English and civics. Caili is a talented lacrosse player and an outstanding dancer. I saw a video from one of Caili’s dance team performances. Her performance was remarkable.

In sixth grade, Caili placed eighth in the Hill School Mile Run. Caili’s favorite television shows are The Vampire Diaries and Grey’s Anatomy.

She has many interests, but her chief career thoughts include dance and studying to become a psychologist. Caili has joined her sister Jordan at Loudoun County High School.

Russell Shoja also began his LCDS career in sixth grade. A witty and personable young man, Russell has a high mechanical aptitude and is a good critical thinker and problem solver. He enjoyed helping out at the Salvation Army during community service.

Russell earned recognition for his performance in Math Olympiad. During his LCDS career, Russell served as a representative in Student Council.

He has a wide range of career interests and would like to become a Naval Officer. After that, he would like to establish his own construction company. Russell is now attending Middleburg Academy.

Tara Flannery enrolled in our program in seventh grade. A responsible, hard-working, and talented student and citizen, her favorite academic subjects are math and science. She has participated in the TJ Intermediate Math Open and other math competitions. An excellent athlete, Tara’s favorites sports are soccer and lacrosse. She also excels in basketball. Tara was a co-captain in basketball and a co-winner of the MVP for our girls green basketball team last season. She has many academic interests and would like to study chemical engineering at Notre Dame University.

Tara is now attending Flint Hill School.

LCDS CLASS OF 2016 GRADUATES Sophia Kay also enrolled in our program in seventh grade.

A delightful and talented young lady and an excellent athlete, Sophie has earned recognition through her athletic abilities including being awarded MVP in a number of soccer tournaments. A competitive runner, she finished in 5th place and 9th place in the Hill School Mile Run the past two years. She also enjoyed playing on our field hockey and lacrosse teams. Sophie was an enthusiastic “Kindergarten Helper” in 7th and 8th grades. Sophie would like to become a professional soccer player or a veterinarian. Sophie is now attending Middleburg Academy.

Jaden Steele also enrolled in seventh grade. An enthusiastic and conscientious student, her favorite subjects are English, math, science, and physical education. She has earned academic awards, including top 20% in the Math Olympiad competition in 7th grade.

A phenomenal athlete whose best sport is soccer, Jaden’s favorite memory of her two years in our program was winning the Talon Tournament with her friends. A co-captain, she earned co-MVP honors for her exceptional play. She has many interests and talents and would like to become a teacher, physical therapist, or CIA/FBI agent. Jaden now attends Dominion High School.

Beau Everett is one of two students who joined our program in eighth grade. He is a responsible student and citizen and an exceptional athlete. He was among our four recipients of the Todd Bohrer Memorial Award and was key to our Talon Tournament championship. He has been an all-star at the Future All American Camp. Beau was a soccer team captain on our LCDS team. Civics and English are Beau’s favorite academic subjects. Beau hopes to earn a basketball scholarship for college and become a businessman or a sports analyst.

Beau now attends Paul VI High School.

Marisa Zitelli enrolled in our eighth grade midway through last year. She is a dedicated, enthusiastic, and talented student and citizen. Math and English are Marisa’s favorite academic subjects. Her dedication and strong academic performance earned her a place on our honor roll. One of her favorite memories is when she, Caili, and Jaden were teaching the boys how to dance for the Talon Tournament Pep Assembly. She has many interests, abilities, spirit, and the personality needed to succeed in whatever she chooses to pursue academically and professionally.

Marisa is now attending Broad Run High School.

Emily Young also entered our program in seventh grade.

Emily enjoys singing, dancing, cooking, helping others, playing basketball, biking, skateboarding, and playing the violin. Her favorite shows to watch are Teen Wolf, Psych, Pretty Little Liars, Girl Meets World, and The Fosters. A talented, honor roll student, her favorite subject is English. Emily has earned recognition for her play in softball and basketball. Emily was an enthusiastic participant in Kindergarten Helpers and German Club.

She is interested in a career as an actress, doctor, or a chef.

Emily is attending Middleburg Academy.

GRADUATION AWARDS JUNE 10, 2016

The Philip E. duPont Memorial Award This award is given to the graduating eighth grader who most visibly demonstrates concern and compassion for fellow LCDS students.

The award is given in honor of Philip E. duPont, a graduate of LCDS who lost his life while serving our country in the United States Marine Corps. While stationed in Japan, Philip entered a burning barracks of his fellow soldiers in an effort to save them from the fire. In doing so, he made the ultimate sacrifice, losing his own life.

Regarding Allison Eisert, our 2016 recipient of the Philip E. duPont Memorial Award, the middle school faculty wrote: “Allison is frequently selfless when it comes to participating with her classmates in activities. She always looks for a compromise so that everyone can win and feel good about themselves. She is the peacemaker of the class.

Sensitive towards others, she understands that even little things such as a smile can make someone’s day, and will be the first one to take a classmate who is having a rough day under her wing.” Congratulations, Allison!

The Headmaster’s Prize This award is given to a member of the graduating class who best exemplifies the philosophy of the school, which includes a supportive attitude, daily evidence of supporting the rules and standards of the school, the qualities of a good citizen, and a genuine love of learning. Mark Sogegian, 2015 recipient of the Headmaster’s Prize, attended our ceremony and announced the 2016 recipient.

Mikayla Connolly, our 2016 Headmaster’s Prize recipient, was praised by the middle school faculty in these words: “Mikayla exemplifies a love of learning for its own sake. She does this on a daily basis while always demonstrating a positive attitude and living the philosophy of the school. She brings positive energy and gives full attention to the classroom, subject matter, and activities every day and poses thoughtful and insightful questions as she applies everything she learns to her broader education. A model student and citizen, she approaches her studies not for the grades but for her edification and personal growth.” Congratulations, Mikayla!

ALUMNI UPDATES Kristine Weatherwax ‘04 lives in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of D.C. and is in Federal consulting, most recently for Eagle Hill Consulting. She graduated from the University of Virginia in 2012, with a double major in Economics and Sociology. She is recently engaged to her long-time boyfriend, Will Jenkins.

Nick Styles ’06 graduated from Yale University in 2014, where he received the Saslow Prize at graduation, given to the student in his residential college who has written an exceptional senior essay on a constitutional issue. After working for the past two years as a consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton, Nick is a full-time student again, having begun law school at the University of Virginia. He was just elected as a representative to the First Year Council (the student body organization at UVA Law) and is enjoying his life in Charlottesville.

Kaylie Weatherwax ‘06, a 2014 graduate of James Madison University with a degree in Computer Information Systems, lives in the Chinatown neighborhood of D.C. and is a consultant for Deloitte.

Casey Kelahan ‘08 graduated in May from McDaniel College in Westminster, MD, with a double degree in Environmental Science and Spanish. She had a busy senior year, completing two senior capstone projects and participating in a yearlong small group seminar/class entitled “Forest Online, “ which involved a month-long visit to the Peruvian Amazon rain forest. The mission of the trip was to use digital storytelling techniques to tell the stories of this richly bio-diverse but threatened ecosystem -- compelling stories that can, and perhaps will, change the world. Crediting her love of the Spanish language with her early start learning it at LCDS, Casey translated many of the interviews with community members in Peru. She has now taken a position with the School for Field Studies in Peru as the Student Affairs Manager.

She looks forward to sharing her experiences there with Spanish classes at LCDS, perhaps via Skype during the school year.

Connor Bluhm ‘08 graduated from Virginia Tech in May of 2016 with a degree in Aerospace Engineering, earning summa cum laude honors. While studying engineering, Connor also participated in orchestra, minored in music, and studied one semester in France. After a summer internship in Los Angeles with the Aerospace Corporation, Connor began his Masters studies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan this fall.

Laura Hollister ‘08 graduated from Elon University in May with a degree in Elementary Education and a minor in business.

She has started a position as a fifth grade math and language arts teacher at Harvey Newlin Elementary in Burlington, North Carolina. This summer, in addition to working as a counselor at some of our LCDS Summer Camps, she also did two weeks of Problem-Based Learning math training at Wake Forest University.

Alex Rossi ‘09 graduated from the University of Virginia this year.

Spencer Rose ‘09 recently returned from a semester abroad in Antwerp, Belgium where he gained valuable insight in international business as he traveled through 12 countries. Spencer will graduate from JMU in May of 2017 with a BA in Business Management with concentrations in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management and European Business. He is eager to begin his professional career at Fannie Mae in August of 2017.

Amanda Bluhm ‘10 entered her junior year at Clemson University this fall and is studying Elementary Education. She is a member of the Clemson Dancers and on the board of the International Literacy Association.

After graduating, she substitute taught at LCDS and then spent a month traveling around Europe, including France, England, Ireland, and Germany. For the rest of the summer, Amanda taught through Little Scholars at LCDS and Providence Academy.

Will Hollister ‘10 attends Hampden-Sydney College and is studying Economics. He played on H-SC’s basketball team during the 2015-2016 season. This past summer he was a paid intern at Home Savings & Trust Mortgage in Fairfax. While working, he studied for and passed the National Mortgage Loan Origination Examination and completed the additional licensing requirements for Maryland, DC, and Virginia.

ALUMNI UPDATES

Cameron Kelahan ‘10 had a busy year attending Northern Virginia Community College in Computer Science, working at the LCDS Extended Day Program, designing and running two MInecraft Camps (building a private server from scratch), and working at three other LCDS summer camps (Harry Potter 1 and 2 and Roxaboxen.) He has transferred to James Madison University this fall to complete his four-year Computer Science degree and is looking forward to the opportunity, as well as living with three of his best friends, all of whom he met at LCDS. Drew Styles ’10 recently started his third year at Oberlin College in Ohio. He is double majoring in Environmental Studies and Law and Society, with a double minor in Russian and Eastern European Studies. He is eagerly looking forward to spring semester, when he will head to Copenhagen to study sustainability in Denmark and other northern European countries.

Robbie Weatherwax ‘10 is a junior at James Madison University and is majoring in Computer Information Systems. He is an Executive Officer for his fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon. Robbie has an internship set for next summer with RMS at Tysons Corner.

Ben Cross ‘11 is a freshman at Denison University. He played more than three quarters in his first football game this fall. He had many offers from Division I (Delaware, Maryland) Division IAA (Trinity, Amherst), Division II (Hillsdale) and a multitude of Division III schools. When he visited Denison he knew right away it was a good fit. Ben plans to pursue a degree in PPE (Political Science, Philosophy and Economics), then go on to law school.

Class of 2013: Daniel Eisert, Parker Barrett and Jack Joyce recently attended Boys State sponsored by the American Legion at Radford University. Over 700 boys from the Commonwealth of Virginia attended and learned the importance of Civic Leadership, Pride in America, a better understanding of Government and individual obligation to Community , State and Nation. Daniel Eisert was one of the two boys chosen to go on to Boys Nation at the end of July in Washington, DC. In addition he received a $2,500 College Scholarship.

Lance Cross ‘14 is a junior at Flint Hill and is thriving there. He plays tennis and has been excelling academically. He will receive his Eagle Scout in October.

Greyson Sequino ‘15 is enjoying his sophomore year at Riverside High School. He’s become an avid track and cross-country runner. Last spring, as a freshman he joined 3 of his teammates who qualified to run at the VA State Track and Field Meet. They came in 9th place in the 4 x 800 relay. This fall he is enjoying running cross country for Riverside with a personal best time of 16:32 in the 5k.
