L

THESIS PROJECT

The educational process of the architecture career culminates with the presentation and defence of the degree project before an external commission which evaluates all the architectural, spatial and constructive aspects of the proposal.

The degree stages of the School of Architecture of the University of La Serena are two; The first culminates with the completion of all the compulsory subjects with their respective credits, after which the title of Bachelor of Architecture is obtained. To then start a process where you only work on a large-scale project, such as a facility on a regional or national scale, here you get the final degree of architect.

The theme of the title project was a Regional Botany Educational Park, facing imminent drought in the north of the country, the loss of the family agricultural legacy and the growing interest in global urban agriculture. Located in a high-risk sector in the city of La Serena, the project seeks to be an educational alternative for the area's children, youth, and adults.

Structures Workshop

The project was carried out in Guanaqueros cove, near the city of Coquimbo - Chile. It corresponds to a grocery market on the shores of the beach, with all the security measures against tidal waves and tsunamis, as well as furniture and facilities for disabled people.

(Team work)

Urban Design Workshop I

The project focused on design within Chilean cities, in relation to urbanism and public spaces. This proposal was made in the city of Copiapó, in the north of the country, months before affected by floods. Therefore, the proposal for public spaces was developed in safe areas and in low-income populations.

(Team work)

Urban Design Workshop II

The second workshop on the design of public spaces and local urbanism, the project was carried out in the town of Totoralillo, a tourist area in the Coquimbo region where the temporary passage of tourists destroyed the social fabric of the town.

(Team work)

Apart from the architecture projects, in parallel, projects aimed at the development of highly complex structural techniques were carried out in the Structures Workshop and urban planning and development of public spaces in the Urban Design workshops, where the project is focused on a series of interventions with a high impact on a macro-zone of the city. These workshops contribute to the more professional development of the architecture workshops and to a greater knowledge of the students for the preparation of the degree project.

EXTRA PROJECTS 08

EDUCATION

TU Berlin Project RÜDERSDORF Resource–remixed!

Winter Semester 2021 - 2022

167th AIV Schinkel Competition on the theme

"Resource Rüdersdorf - remixed" sought the redesign of an abandoned industrial villa in the city of Rüdersdorf, which sought to enhance the qualities of the place, close to nature, important transportation routes, close both to the city centre as well as to the capital, Berlin.

The group proposal seeks to design a creative city, which interacts with natural and industrial elements through the creation of public and meeting spaces capable of attracting new residents, associated with creative offices in the capital that, due to the possibilities of the home office, want a calm and inspiring environment to develop all your creative abilities.

(Team work)

MASTER PLAN PROPOSAL

The proposal seeks to integrate the connectivity of the place towards a new urban centre without polluting emissions, integrating electric mobility and the use of bicycle paths and pedestrian walkways. The reconstruction and rehabilitation of the old buildings of the fertilizer factory into new apartment blocks, suitable for the new diverse residents.

09

The new spaces coexist between the old ruins of the factory and the benefits of the natural elements that surround the project area. The new meeting nodes define and configure the "Creative City" project, where the interaction with both the inert elements and the living elements provide the necessary atmosphere for new, more sustainable life systems.

10 MASTER PROCESS

EDUCATION Winterschool IDENTITÄTSSTIFTENDE REGION

Weimar, Germany - March 2022

Participation as a representative of the Technical University of Berlin in the winter school at the University of Weimar, where groups of students from various universities in Germany met to discuss the challenges of identity in the Thüringen region, focusing on architecture projects and design to the urban and historical development of the region.

The project corresponds to a Memorial in the city of Berlstedt to commemorate the "Death Marches" and a concentration camp that took place nearby, events that occurred in the Second World War, an indelible part of the history of the city and the country.

The project represents the trail in a series of pillars that unite two areas where the forced labour camp barracks were formerly located and large public areas for contemplation, where families can share, remembering the past and building the future.

(Team work)

11

Projects outside of master's subjects give added value to personal learning, providing a great professional experience, as well as carrying out group design with colleagues from various realities and professions. Multidisciplinarity contributes to a more diverse job, with multiple visions of the world and needs to be satisfied. The travel experience also broadens the boundaries of what is known and marks personal development, learning about new cultures, languages, and architectural techniques.

TU Berlin Project BOTTOM UP RECOVERY IF INNER CITY DISTRICTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST AFTER ARMED CONFLICTS

Aleppo, Syria - February 2023

Within the projects required by the master's degree, this project is framed as a hybrid proposal between the Faculty of Urban Planning and the Faculty of Architecture of the TU Berlin, in charge of Dr. Arch. Christoph Wessling, who in turn is a professor at the Technical University of Cottbus, where developed a theme related to the reconstruction of cities after war processes, showing as an example the cities of Hamburg and Potsdam in Germany, Warsaw in Poland and the cities studied in the Workshop held in the capital of Jordan on the cities of Syria.

The city chosen for the project was the old urban centre of Aleppo, an area that surrounds the Citadel, this city was in civil war for more than ten years and was recently affected by a large earthquake, devastating the last identity elements of the community.

(Individual work)

URBAN ACUPUNCTURE

The urban proposal is carried out under the design tool proposed by J. Lerner, in the case of the Curitiba intervention. Where small-scale projects can generate large-scale revitalization, affecting a large percentage of the city. Through this technique, the aim is to rebuild spaces that have been destroyed, occupied as parking lots or large spaces in which potential public spaces can be generated. Where shady and resting squares were developed, small archaeological museums and museums on the history of the city.

13

As part of the designs that define the various points of intervention, there are characteristic elements of Middle Eastern culture, from construction details to customs, mixed with elements of successful case studies on the use of public space in the world. The projects are made up of spaces according to the needs of both adults and children of the place, the various interventions seek to revitalize the meeting points of the community, in order to rebuild the broken ties after the serious material and human losses experienced after the prolonged time of war that affected the city.

PROCESO MASTER 14

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

Kaira Looro Competition 2022

An international architecture competition open to students and young architect. The 2022's edition aims is to design a Children'House in Baghere, Senegal.

Contest aimed of selecting an architecture as a warm and welcoming place where activities aimed at preventing child malnutrition can be carried out in a rural environment.

The competition promotes a sustainable approach, encouraging research in architecture capable of offering a concrete response to climate change and humanitarian crises.

(Team work)

The group presentation to the contest consisted of a wide circular space that revolves around a water fountain, which serves as a collection of precious rainwater, extremely scarce in the place. Continuing the structure with the foliage of the local trees to protect the also precious shade.

The project spaces house sleeping areas, large dining rooms facing the centre of the project, play areas and creativity for children. All this respects the construction margins required by the tender, both in materiality and costs.

In my experience as an assistant professor for the Urban and Environmental Seminar I and II course at the University of La Serena, I was entrusted with the design and development of the first magazine on the subject. In it, the works developed by the students in two semesters are gathered, where they begin by choosing an idea until they develop it into a small essay, which is exposed in this magazine.

The general themes of the essays are related to urban problems of national and international society.

These types of projects are a great contribution to the dissemination of architecture, research and university work.

Full professor: Prof. of History and Geography Ruben Castillo Ortis.

The pandemic period in Chile was a complex educational moment for the entire country and the world. That is why, in coordination with the ULS School of Architecture Student Center and the ULS Faculty of Engineering, a series of online talks were held through the social platforms of both institutions.

The events were held in 2022 when face-to-face gathering activities were not allowed. In the first instance, it had the architect Tomás Villalón as a guest, in the second event the national architecture prize, Edward Rojas and the architect Alejandro Soffia. And in their last event Rodrigo Sheward and Martín del Solar, members of Grupo Talca.

Undoubtedly, this activity left a great precedent for the spectators of these events and for those of us who were able to organize them, establishing strong ties between the national architectural community and debating urgent urban issues for society.
