I had the pleasure to visit Wolf River and Ghost River State Natural Area to hunt rabbits. It has over 1,100 acres and it is open for small game as well as big game hunting located in LaGrange. Before you stay home thinking there is no place to hunt think about finding a WMA near you.

Gunfire Erupts at Humboldt, North Side Basketball game

One person has been killed and at least three others injured in a shooting at a high school basketball game in Humboldt.

An altercation between two adults during a Humboldt High School versus North Side High School resulted in shots being fired.

No students were involved in the altercation, and none of the injured or deceased victims are students, Humboldt City Schools said in a statement released Tuesday night.

“We know of one who was deceased, and another was flown to The Med in Memphis and was in surgery last I heard,” Humboldt Police Chief Reynard Buchanan told The Jackson Sun. “And as time passed, we were notified of others who showed up at nearby medical facilities who were apparently also injured, but none of those injuries were life-threatening.”

All Wednesday classes and school activities were cancelled by Humboldt school officials.

The investigation is ongoing.

Vehicular Homicide Suspect Caught

by U.S. Marshals Task Force

JACKSON, Tenn. – U.S. Marshal Tyreece Miller announces the arrest of David Jenkins, 33, for Vehicular Homicide, Vehicular Assault, and Reckless Endangerment. Jenkins was wanted by the Henry County Sheriff’s Office.

On April 7, 2021, David Jenkins was driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated when he collided with Kimberly McDaniel resulting in her death and injuring another person in Henry County, TN.

HUMBOLDT POLICE NEED INFORMATION ABOUT STABBING DEATH

On November 21, 2021 at 10:31 p.m. Officers of the Humboldt Police Department were dispatched to the Tennessee Army National Guard Armory where a private birthday party was taking place. Officers found one subject a Juan Omar Rodriguez a 31-year-old Hispanic male from Humboldt who had been stabbed. The subject was taken to a local hospital and did die from his injuries. The Humboldt Police Department is asking anyone with any information on this incident to come forward as this is an active investigation. November 16, 2021 -Tristyn Fletcher JACKSON, Tenn. — An annual event that brightens the lives of children was kicked off Tuesday night to the sound of Christmas classics.

The Boys & Girls Club of Jackson began its Windows of Hope fundraiser.

Kids were able to sing songs like “Jingle Bells,” “Silent Night,” “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” and more to begin the fundraising campaign.

The goal of the campaign is to bring hope to kids through programs like the Boys & Girls Club.

And during the holiday season, donations are represented through lights displayed in the windows of the West Tennessee Healthcare building that sits at the corner of Old Hickory Boulevard and the Highway 45 Bypass.

Those interested in donating can mail a check to the Boys & Girls of Jackson at 832 Lexington Avenue, Jackson, TN 38301.

Doe’s Eat Place opens “Historic Greyhound Bus Station”

Reader of the Week’

Doe’s Eat Place, located at 407 East Main Street in the historic Greyhound Bus Station, in downtown Jackson has opened.

Doe’s opened as a family owned restaurant in Greenville, Mississippi in 1941.

Famous for its porterhouse steak, Doe’s also offers fish and the restaurant has begun serving hot beef tamales.

They offer seating for 126, and a room for private dining will be available. With the arrival of Doe’s, this will be the first time the landmark building will be in full time operation since accepting its last Greyhound bus passengers in October 2018.

The station built in 1938, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993, for its architecture significance.

With a membership now reaching 12,000, volunteers with the “Downtown Ricky Brown Traffic Spotters Network” meet for a Thanksgiving luncheon at the Traffic Spotters Safety Network offices in downtown Jackson.

And Your Point is . . .

“I Don’t Think They Would Have Hurt Me...”

If only I’d have given them the money”. I have heard far too many statements like this from victims of violent crime who were suffering from everything from black eyes to gunshot wounds.

If you find yourself the victim of a robbery or mugging please remember there is only one objective and that is to stay alive! Let the attacker have whatever they want, we want them to get their job done and leave! The money, jewelry, or whatever can be replaced but your life and health cannot.

In case you have the misfortune to be a victim, please keep these things in mind: REMAIN CALM – We human beings tend to mirror one another’s behavior and if you get excited, it may make them more excited and make them even more dangerous – These things don’t last too long – Keep telling yourself it will be over in a minute!

Don’t make any quick or threatening movements as this may cause the attacker to become more violent Comply with their demands EXCEPT ONE – Don’t leave with them. Lie down, kick, scream, whatever you must do, but DON’T leave with them – If they are going to shoot you, make them do it right here where you will get some help not out in the middle of nowhere after they have done no telling what to you!

“What are you going to do with all that money?” – “You’re not from around here are you?” These are actual questions that have been asked by robbery victims – Believe me, robbers don’t like to answer questions so don’t ask them anything or volunteer information such as “I have more money in the car, would you like that too” We want them to do their work and LEAVE. Try and be observant without being obvious so you can give the police a good description of your assailant. Do not try and be more descriptive than you can be. View them from the top down; notice such things as jewelry, tattoos, and language. Try and relate their size to something that is KNOWN such where the trunk lid of a car hit them on their body (waist high or half way between the knees and waist?).

How Many Pastors Can We Have?

NNPA NEWSWIRE — So how many pastors does the Arbery family have? As many as they want. Black folks around the nation and the world are praying for a just result in this trial. We are praying for a judicial ruling that the massacre of Black people is unacceptable. We are praying for an examination of this nonsense called “citizen’s arrest.” And we are praying for our leaders, our pastors, our brothers to keep the faith and keep representing.

November 30, 2021 -By Julianne Malveaux, NNPA Newswire Contributor Rev. Jesse Jackson and Rev. Al Sharpton are doing the right thing when attending the Amaud Arbery trial. They demonstrate the solidarity that the Black community has with each other when one of us is lynched. Lynching has reverberations. Each of us, every Black person, is repulsed and dismayed when we learn that armed white men, using the pretense of “citizen’s arrest,” can kill any of us. What is a citizen’s arrest, anyway? Is it simply a license to kill?

Kevin Gough, the attorney “defending” William “Roddie” Bryant, the man who both took the video of the massacre and participated in it, has asked the judge, each day, to bar Rev Jesse Jackson from the courtroom. How absurd! He says Rev. Jackson’s presence might influence the nearly all-white jury, and I suspect his objections might lay the groundwork for an appeal if the devilish white men are found guilty of murder.

Gough’s racism and ignorance have been a constant presence in this trial. He said he didn’t want more Black pastors in the courtroom after Rev. Sharpton sat with the Arbery family. He asked the stupid question, “How many pastors does the Arbery family have.” He had the nerve, though out of the jury’s hearing, to ask if Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock, also a pastor, will be next in the courtroom. What if he was?

What Gough does not understand are the many ways that racism connects Black people. In the book Lynching and Spectacle (University of North Carolina Press, 2009), Amy Louise Wood writes, “The news of lynching shook (the author Richard Wright) to his core. Despite, or even because of, its relative rarity, lynching held a singular psychological force, generating a level of fear and horror that overwhelmed all other forms of violence. Even one lynching reverberated, traveling with sinister force, down city streets, and through rural farms, across roads and rivers.” Any of us could be followed and shot on any given day. We have no shield. We can be unarmed and running. In bed and sleeping (ask Breonna Taylor), or simply walking down the street. And white folks see a threat because racism is baked in the cake we call America. When we watch the massacre of Amaud Arbery, we see ourselves, our sons, our daughters, our mothers.

That connects us. That’s why more than one hundred pastors rallied with Rev. Sharpton outside the Brunswick courthouse in solidarity. I want Revs. Jackson, Sharpton, William Barber, Freddy Haynes, and so many others rally at every massacre. Cause it’s personal. How dare this high-handed man, the offense attorney, question anybody’s religion, pastoral relationships, community connections, or anything else?

Gough will go down in the racist’s hall of fame, but he is not the only one. All these “stand your ground” laws are an absurd attempt to allow white people to shoot Black people with impunity. Southern state legislatures empower white people to embrace their racism with firearms, whether they are police officers or ordinary citizens. It is frightening to think that we live in a world where white fear, real or imagined, justifies a Black massacre.

On the witness stand, one of the murderers admitted that Arnaud did not say a word to him, did not do a darn thing but try to get away from him. He shot him anyway! So, some random white person follows a Black man and attacks him because he is “scared.”

He should have kept his scared self in his house and called the police. But no, he was a white man with privilege, power, and a weapon. Why should he call law enforcement when he could enforce the law himself?

So how many pastors does the Arbery family have? As many as they want. Black folks around the nation and the world are praying for a just result in this trial. We are praying for a judicial ruling that the massacre of Black people is unacceptable. We are praying for an examination of this nonsense called “citizen’s arrest.” And we are praying for our leaders, our pastors, our brothers to keep the faith and keep representing.

Kevin Gough does not “get” the Black community, and he doesn’t have to. But what he needs to know, when he thundered about Black pastors, is that all of us, Black people, are connected. How many pastors do I have? As many as will claim me. Hundreds of Black pastors have claimed the Arbery family because they relate to their pain.

Whether you are a pastor or not, you should claim them, too.

COOK, MARABLE JUDGE JMC BICENTENNIAL POETRY CONTEST Karen Cook and Bill Marable were the guest judges for the Bicentennial Jackson Madison County Celebration Poetry Contest. There were some fantastic poems submitted by students from the Jackson-Madison County system, Private and Home schools. Cook, a retired educator, taught in the Jackson School System for 25 years. Marable is a founding member of the Griot Collective of West Tennessee, a poetry workshop.

Christmas Mail Cards in each mailbox, angel, manger, star and lamb, as the rural carrier, driving the snowy roads, hears from her bundles the plaintive bleating of sheep, the shuffle of sandals, the clopping of camels.

Lane had five players score in double figures as they won their home opener over the Panthers, 75-49.

The hosts were slow out of the gate, scoring just 11 points in the first 12 minutes of play.

Lane heated up after the third media timeout, outscoring the visitors 17-9 to close out the half with a four-point advantage.

The Dragons stayed hot in the second half, shooting 54% from the floor and outscoring Philander Smith 47-25.

Tomonique Marion (r) led all scorers with 15 points while also pulling in a game-high seven rebounds.

Kelvin Allen had 11 points with seven rebounds and four assists. Maximillion Bell also chipped in 11 points.

Jamarius Horton scored 10 points off the bench while Kylan Haywood had 11 points and a game-high +31 in scoring differential.

Jackson Legislators Join Secretary of State Tre Hargett to Present Archives Grant in Madison County

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Sen. Ed Jackson, Rep. Chris Todd, Rep. Johnny Shaw and Secretary of State Tre Hargett awarded an archival grant to the Madison County Archives on Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2021.

“I congratulate our local archives officials who work to preserve our heritage and was happy to support funding for this grant,” said Sen. Ed Jackson, R-Jackson. “I also appreciate Secretary Hargett and his staff for their investment in our community through the award of this grant.”

“The Madison County Archives houses volumes of irreplaceable documents and records preserving the history of our community and our people. This investment serves to ensure these treasures are safeguarded and accessible to the public for future generations,” said Rep. Chris Todd, R-Jackson. “We are grateful to Secretary Hargett and our local archivists for the important work they do preserving Madison County’s place in our state’s history.”

“Preserving history is vitally important and this grant from the Secretary of State’s office will allow us to do just that so future generations can learn from our past,” Rep. Johnny Shaw, D-Bolivar. “My thanks to Secretary of State Hargett and his staff for the work they do.”

These archival grants, which are used to support local archive development across the state, are funded by the Tennessee General Assembly and administered by the Tennessee State Library & Archives, a division of the Department of State. The Madison County Archives received a $3,225 archive development grant to purchase archival-quality containers to house county court records dating back to the 1820s.

“Archive grants are critical to preserving local history and helping protect irreplaceable documents,” said Secretary Hargett. “This grant is one way to ensure the history of Madison County residents lives on for the benefit of future generations.”

More than $45,000 in state funds are being awarded to develop and enhance 21 archives across Tennessee.

The Jackson-Madison County NAACP Will House Historic Merry High Photos and Documents The Jackson Madison County NAACP Branch will host a press conference on Tuesday, November 30that 11:00 AM to receive, hold and preserve historical artifacts of Merry High School (Cir. 1870’s).

Rev. Dr. Leo Gray, a graduate of Lane College (class of 1968) has in his possession photos, documents, and other historical items that will be housed at the local NAACP office until the appropriate venue is found and/ or established for the public presentation.

“This is history that cannot be forgotten,” said Harrell Carter, President of the local NAACP Branch.

“These photos and other documents are footprints to the past.

Our ancestors created a vision for future generations to follow.”
