With the new season comes the excitement and thrill of the 2018-19 Youth Premier League. Over the upcoming months, the Cricket Victoria YPL will be hosted at grounds across the state now at under-14, under-16, under-17 and under-18 levels. We have revised our junior high-performance system, so our 16 teams are playing more cricket than ever before but with less travel. The YPL concludes with the Youth Super Series which gives additional match opportunities for the outstanding performers. We are excited to develop the next crop of Australian superstars and the YPL and the YSS are great pathways for us to achieve this. I wish to acknowledge and thank the Premier Cricket clubs, affiliates and their representatives from across Victoria, whose tireless work to support the programs in the regions are crucial to the talent recruitment process. I would also like to congratulate this season’s young men and women representatives who are contesting the Youth Premier League. PLAY HARD PLAY FAIR PLAY BRAVE Congratulations on your selection for your team! Playing in the Youth Premier League is an exciting opportunity for you to challenge yourself and test your might against the best cricketers from around the state. It is important you enjoy the competition and make a positive impact on your team and your teammates both on and off the field. But above all else play brave. “Play Brave” is a phase that will be repeated many times throughout your cricket journey and your time around this game we all love, with your coaches, your teammates, and your family there to support you. For cricketers young and old, the notion of play brave can mean different things to different players. For the YPL, “play brave” is to encourage you to play your best and try your hardest, day in day out, week in week out, month on month, year on year with the enjoyment of the game which will drive you. Throughout this competition season there will be moments of brilliance, there will be times where you exceed your own expectations, and there will be times you may not have been to the standard you were expecting of yourself. The important thing to remember is to always make a total effort. Even when the odds are against you, look for how you can impact the game and support your team. Because one player can be a crucial ingredient on a team. But one player cannot make a team. For some the YPL will be a thrill of being involved with the elite junior cricket competition in the state, for your teams the goal will be progressing to the finals, and for others their strong performances may result in them being selected for the Youth Super Series and state team trials. But while a trophy carries dust, the memories you make during the Youth Premier League will last you forever. With that in mind, give it your all, enjoy your cricket and play brave, and all the best for the Youth Premier League.

WITH A NEW SEASON COMES NEW OPPORTUNITY, AND MELBOURNE RENEGADES BOWLER TAYLA VLAEMINCK CAN’T WAIT TO TAKE IT ALL ON IN WBBL|04. Vlaeminck’s two season with the Renegades haven’t gone the way the promising young bowler has hoped, missing both WBBL|02 and WBBL|03 due to injury. Although this left the 19-year-old to run drinks for most of the summer, it did not deter the precocious talent from seizing any opportunity to learn from some of the world’s best.

“Although I couldn’t play, I learnt so much being around the team and the coaches,” Vlaeminck said. “Being around the likes of Molly Strano and New Zealand International Amy Satterthwaite taught me so much about what it takes to be a professional cricketer. “All the incredible support I received from friends and family also made me work all that much harder. It was great to then see that hard work earn me some success in South Africa.” On the pathway back to her best, Vlaeminck was selected for the Australian Under-19s side to tour South Africa in April 2018. The overseas trip marked the first time Vlaeminck represented her country abroad and showcased her outstanding potential as a top-level talent. Taking an exceptional 6-27 off 7.5 overs, and making a stellar 21 with the bat, Vlaeminck led Australia to a 21-run victory against host nation South Africa in the final of the Emerging Women Tri-Series, and in the process, earned player-of-the-match honours. “It was personally satisfying to put together a great performance in the final, but helping the team win the series was even better,”

Vlaeminck said. “To play in a series final, which is such a high-pressure, high-stakes environment, has given me confidence that I can perform on the big stage for the Renegades this summer and I can’t wait to get the opportunity to put on the red.” That means trouble for opposing squads as Vlaeminck has not only signed with the Renegades but will represent the Victorian Women’s Cricket Team in the WNCL season too. The Bendigo born player on the rise is now enjoying the fact cricket is becoming a year-round pursuit for her, while also balancing her studies in physiotherapy at LaTrobe University. “It’s great that cricket is now year-round. Between balancing playing, training and my studies, it makes for a pretty busy schedule, but I love it and can’t wait for the season to begin again.” Busy schedules have been the norm for Vlaeminck after being selected as a junior to represent the Under-14 Victorian side before elevating through the state junior system - a time the former Northern Rivers player remembers fondly. “If it wasn’t for the exposure to elite coaching through the state youth system, I don’t know if I would have ended up at the Melbourne Renegades.” The YPL has redeveloped the female pathway to better align to National female program, giving junior female players more opportunities to represent Victoria at the Under-15 and Under-18 levels. This will also create more opportunities for community cricket associations to develop their own female representative competitions and hopefully their own Tayla Vlaeminck’s as female cricket continues to grow in Victoria.

EXCITED FOR THE FUTURE Female cricket participation in Victoria continues to grow immensenly. Former Victorian player Megan Pauwels has seen this rise first hand. After representing the Victoria for over a decade against elite competition,Pauwels is excited about the opportunities the Youth Premier League will give the next crop of cricket superstars. “When I began coaching with Outer East Eagles in the State Championships, we began with a young group of girls and the numbers were not massive,” Pauwels said. “But over the years the number of players grew and last year we had a huge number of female players which was fantastic for the sport.” Taking on a new challenge and new opportunity herself with the Southern Pioneers under-14 females for the upcoming YPL season, Pauwels is excited for helping develop the players’ skills and abilities as they take up the sport she loves. “I love watching the girls’ games develop and grow, it is great being able to help them progress with their cricket,” Pauwels said. One the new initiatives of the YPL is having teams playing both forms of the game against elite competition. Pauwels believes this opportunity for players to experience both game formats will be beneficial for their playing future. “To have the 40-over match first up, and then be able to play T20 matches is really great because it gives the girls a chance to play in both formats of the game, and is more realistic of what is happening in the professional game,” Pauwels said. “It gives the players a better understanding of the game, which will be crucial in opening up more career pathways for the girls.” The YPL is promoting a mantra of ‘play brave’ for the entire season, encouraging players of all ages to believe in their abilities and to take their opportunities. Pauwels is excited to see the young players taking on the challenges of the competition and playing sensational cricket. “The mantra of ‘play brave’ encourages the players to be fearless,” Pauwels said. “It will encourage the players to take their opportunities and do their best to help their team and their teammates and make them confident in their abilities.” Confidence is crucial to any cricketer’s psyche no matter their age, their grade, or their skills. The YPL has introduced ‘player only’ zones at grounds to encourage players to enjoy their cricket and their time with their teammates without facing outside pressures influencing their cricket. Something the former elite cricketer knows all too well. “When you are an athlete, even an elite athlete, you get a lot of advice… whether the advice is from home, or from friends, or at school, so having the ‘player only’ zones will help in taking away some of that outside noise,” Pauwels said. “Knowing it’s just you, your teammates, and your coaches will mean the players are able to concentrate on their game… the players will be able to focus on what is happening on the field and there will not be any mixed messages.” The YPL season culminates with the Youth Premier League Super Series pitting the best players of the season against one another. Testing yourself against your fellow athlete is at the epicentre of competitive sport,, and Pauwels believes players will relish the opportunity. “The YPL Super Series is a great concept,” Pauwels said. “You always want to know where you stand as an athlete, so being able to participate in the Super Series will grant the players this opportunity, it will be great for their development as they continue their cricket journey… I can’t wait for the season to get underway.”

AFTER AN IMPRESSIVE CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, ANNABEL SUTHERLAND IS READY TO MAKE AN EVEN BIGGER IMPACT FOR THE MELBOURNE STARS IN HER THIRD WBBL SEASON. Debuting for the Melbourne Renegades in WBBL|02 at 15-yearsold, Sutherland became the youngest player in WBBL history and slotted straight into the top level. However, after moving to crosstown rivals the Melbourne Stars for WBBL|03, the talented all-rounder’s game flourished, and she is now poised to become a revelation in WBBL|04.

“In the past two seasons I’ve not only learnt so much about my own game but also what it takes to be a professional cricketer,” Sutherland said. “I was really fortunate to get the opportunity to play my first game with the Stars last season, and I’m looking forward to being a part of the girls in green again. “This season, I think the goal is for us to do everything we can to play our best cricket and hopefully that means making the finals.” The change to #TeamGreen proved to be a sensational start for Sutherland, who took a wicket with her first delivery in her Stars debut against the Adelaide Strikers at Adelaide Oval. Going on to claim career best figures of 4-20 for the match, Sutherland not only secured her spot in the side for the remainder of the season.

But announced herself as a star on the rise. Finishing the WBBL|03 season playing seven games, Sutherland quickly ascended to form a strong opening bowler partnership with experienced spinner Erin Osborne. “Being handed the new ball was a bit of a surprise, but an amazing experience and opportunity,” Sutherland said. “I was extremely nervous, and it probably didn’t really sink in that I was opening up with the new ball, but the environment around the team was really good which helped me to enjoy the moment as much as I could.” Since her debut, Sutherland has quickly gained an understanding of the level of performance required to be a regular in any squad, including the Stars XI, and the expectation is that the 16-year-old is only going to get better in the future. Representing the Victorian Women’s Cricket Team in the upcoming WNCL season, the former Inner South East Scorpions player is enjoying testing herself against the best players in the country. “Playing for the Scorpions was a really enjoyable experience for me because I had only ever been in a team of boys and played against other boys, so it was the first time I‘d actually played against girls,” Sutherland said. “Playing with the Scorpions provided a great step up for my cricket and hopefully it continues to provide a pathway for the younger girls coming through.”

Over the past year our understanding of how workload may contribute to bone stress injury in young fast bowlers has advanced significantly. As a result the existing youth fast bowling guidelines have been refined. Consultation with State/Territory medical and fitness staff, as well as pace bowling coaches, has provided a clear Australian Cricket position. Below is a summary of the rationale to change and the changes themselves.

• U17

Allow 6-8 weeks gradual bowling preparation prior to the season. Six overs maximum each spell* & 16 overs maximum per match. Target 120-150 balls per week (match & training)

• U19

Allow 8-10 weeks gradual bowling preparation prior to the season. Seven overs maximum each spell* & 20 overs maximum per match. Target 150-180 balls per week (match & training) *rest between spells should be the same number of overs from the same end as the completed spell

MANAGEMENT APPROACH • Lumbar (low back) stress fracture is the most debilitating fast bowler injury and results in the most time missed due to any injury in young fast bowlers • Adolescence provides a “window of opportunity” to improve bone strength with consistent bowling through this period when bone is thought to be responsive to well-planned loading. This has potential to develop a stronger thicker lumbar vertebrae that are better capable of withstanding the loads of fast bowling • Cricket Australia research shows that the frequency of bowling sessions (more sessions per week and less time between sessions) increases the risk of developing a lumbar stress fracture. This appears to be a more prominent risk factor than the number of balls bowled • Sustained bowling over a prolonged period of time (e.g 3 months) without a rest period was is also a risk factor in the development of lumbar stress fracture
