It’s a role I’m extremely honoured to have accepted and one I’ve taken with the full knowledge of the expectations that go with it. No matter where you go in New Zealand people know about Canterbury Rugby, the history, the success it’s had, the players and the coaches it’s produced. Just the thought of playing against Canterbury, especially here at home, left a lump in their gut. Some of that success was down to you. You helped create an atmosphere that made it hard for our opposition. One that also inspired our guys to dig deeper than they ever had before, because they weren’t just playing for themselves, they were playing for you.

Images of the 80’s and 90’s on the embankment of Lancaster Park, shoulder to shoulder draped in red and black, screaming yourself horse, showed me the pride and connection you’ve had to the team in the past.
As a man not from Canterbury, it’s these sorts of images that inspire me each and every day. Because I believe my role is far greater than just to inspire our boys to win on Saturday. A key part of my role, one that I’m extremely passionate about, is to make you proud, to inspire you to be there on Saturday, screaming for Canterbury, to connect you with the team, and for you to be proud of your team. Therefore, I wanted to ask you a question.

DOUBLE HEADER
Outside of Palu, the forward pack remains unchanged, with the successful return from injury for Terauoriwa Gapper seeing her step into start at first-five-eight, with the impressive Rosie Kelly retained in the line-up at fullback, showing her versatility across the backline.
MOUTHWATERING FPC CLASH AWAITS IN CLUB DAY
As the last game before the beginning of the Laurie O’Reilly test series, also here next week in Ōtautahi, Baxter has again called upon the region’s international talent, while also providing a chance to a number of other players to get vital experience ahead of the coming weeks. One such pick is prop Ona Palu, who gets her first opportunity in the starting tighthead jersey alongside Black Ferns Pip Love and Georgia Ponsonby. “Ona has put in a lot of hard work at training and fully deserves this opportunity to start her first game for Canterbury,” said Baxter.
The two remaining undefeated sides in the Premiership of the Farah Palmer Cup go head-tohead this weekend, as Canterbury welcome Waikato to Ōtautahi on Saturday. As the opening game of this weekend’s Miles Toyota Club Day, the JJ Stewart Trophy clash against Waikato presents the chance for Blair Baxter’s side to gain the ascendancy against a formidable opponent. Meeting in the last two FPC finals, the two sides share one title apiece, with Waikato the most recent victors in 2021.
“Having Terauoriwa back in the starting lineup is a real asset for our side and to have the ability to include both her and Rosie is a treat for any coach.”
On the bench, Canterbury will have the ability to call on strong front row replacements in Steph Te Ohaere-Fox, Lucy Anderson and Amy Rule. Stacey Niao and Kalesi Taga round out the forward reserves, while Isabella Waterman returns from injury alongside Di Hiini and Patricia Hopcroft. Both Niao and Marcelle Parkes will play their 12th game for Canterbury, earning their cap.
Kick off is at 4:35pm at Orangetheory Stadium, with tickets available here.
“It’s fair to say we have a bit of recent history with Waikato,” said Baxter, “they are a quality opponent and we can’t wait to test ourselves against them again on Saturday.”

NPC SIDE NAMED FOR FIRST HOME GAME
Canterbury has their sights set on back-to-back wins, with the Wellington Lions coming to town on AfterSaturday.anexciting 62-15 win over Manawatu to open their NPC campaign, Billy Harmon’s troops have arrived back in Christchurch with the task of defending home territory for the first time in 2022.
“That was a good start,” said Harmon, who will captain the side again in his 50th match in red and black. “But we know the Lions are a different beast and it’ll be a different challenge this week.”
“It’s really important for our players to remember where they’ve come from, and to showcase the pathway to professional rugby. Our guys have been training in their club jerseys all week and sharing their stories about where they’ve come from, which has been really exciting.”

With that in mind, Bourke loaded the chambers with experienced loosehead Daniel Lienert Brown retuning to the starting line-up, forming a formidable front row alongside hooker Brodie McAlister and tighthead Owen Franks. Finlay Brewis, Oli Jager, and George Bell provide the second round of ammo.
Backs coach Alex Robertson is sticking to his guns, resisting any changes to his backline from week one, with Mitchell Drummond and Fergus Burke loaded at 9 & 10, Dallas McLeod and Rameka Poihipi in the midfield and firing shots from out wide. “Our guys connected really well last week, so it makes sense to build on that,” said Robertson. “We want the boys to go out there and try their hand, back themselves to have a crack, and forming combinations that are familiar will really help that.”
A revved-up Marty Bourke has put the pressure on his side to seek out a performance that the people of Canterbury can be proud of. “The last thing we want is for teams to think they’re coming to Christchurch for a jolly. This is our home ground, and we will defend it with everything that we have.”
Bourke also made mention of the Miles Toyota Club Day with the team set to be led out by the next generation of club players.

The foundation is also designed to offer donors the opportunity to help foster the game they love without it being specifically targeted to any particular club or “Manyinitiative.of us have wonderful memories of rugby and how it made us who we are today, but perhaps they’re not connected to a club, or they’d like to help out right across Canterbury. Chairman Brent Goldsmid, who has been working on the development of the foundation for over a year, says the response has been overwhelmingly positive. “It’s been great to have the support of the clubs and the community. This is about getting alongside the people in our community and working to support them in delivering a quality rugby experience.”

The coaching group of 4-time champion Team 2 front rowers Mitch Daly and Jack Hyde, alongside Canterbury First-Five-Eight Alex Harford has ensured their side is ready for anything the Bush Pigs throw at them, with the Dunedin side the newest edition of last year’s National champions.
