EXTREME OWNERSHIP Newsletter

On June 5th, 1944, just one day before the famous D-Day landing of WWII, General Eisenhower wrote two letters. The first was his victory speech. He carefully crafted a message telling the world that the Allied forces had broken through the German defenses and won a major victory. The second letter was in case the invasion failed, which many thought was inevitable. In this letter, Eisenhower wrote, “I and I alone, am responsible for the failure of the invasion. It was my decision to attack, and I alone am to blame.” Eisenhower was ready to give credit to the Allied forces and fully prepared to take complete ownership if it failed.

Crete United recently released its new Standard of Performance, which lists ten points we expect from everyone in the organization.

Item number seven reads, “We run to problems, never away: We demand ownership.” The odds of the largest land invasion in history succeeding were low. Eisenhower knew some men were not returning, no matter what happened. He was prepared to face the challenge and to take complete ownership if it failed. We should strive to do the same, take ownership of issues, and expect the same from others.

I encourage you to embrace the new Standard of Performance, realizing that every day, our actions move us closer to being the type of organization we want to be. If you are lucky enough to be part of this organization, you are part of an organization with high expectations of you and itself.

STANDARD OF PERFORMANCE

CONSISTENT EFFORT IS A CONSISTENT CHALLENGE

1. If we make a mistake, we make it moving forward. Not acting is unacceptable.

2. Be problem solvers, not debaters.

3. Always uphold our standards. Never look the other way.

4. Everything we do is First Class - Protect the brand at all costs.

5. Details matter to us - Honor the connection between details & improvement.

6. Be willing to go the extra mile for the organization.

7. We run to problems, never away. We demand ownership.

8. Relentlessly seek improvement both personally & organizationally.

9. Demonstrate respect for each person in the organization & the work he or she does.

10. We expect everyone to possess the highest level of expertise in their area of reponsibility.

“Maintaining high-quality standards ensures that your goal-oriented purpose is fully aligned with your professional timeline, making work feel more like a fulfilling endeavor rather than a chore. Operating at a high level becomes enjoyable, encouraging, and seeing the team succeed becomes a driving force for you.”

“With this Standard of Performance, we are setting the bar for ourselves – and we are setting it high. Our Standard reminds us how we elevate ourselves, our teams, and our work to the highest level. It’s about how we strive for excellence, together, in everything we do.”

“The standard is our brand, and our brand is our culture. It is a guide of what to expect from one another and a rallying point to supersede that expectation.”

WORK THE TEAM, THEN THE PROBLEM

When faced with a problem or opportunity, the first step is to ensure the right team is in place and working on it.

Operation Fusion is a pivotal initiative aimed at advancing and refining Crete United. Spearheaded by Mike Cox, this core working group unites leaders from all cross-functional teams to update processes and strategically position the company for success with clear, actionable, short-term goals.

INDUSTRY INSIGHTS

STATES WITH FLUORESCENT BANS AND LIGHTING LEGISLATION

California

By 2025, all major forms of fluorescent bulbs will be discontinued, as well there is legislation that is pushing for the discontinuing of CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Lamps).

Colorado

Starting in 2025, the state will no longer allow CFLs and Linear Fluorescent Bulbs, driven by a desire to minimize mercury waste and improve energy efficiency.

Hawaii

In 2021, the state banned the sale of high CRI (Color Rendering Index) fluorescents with a CRI over 87. Starting in 2025, the sale of CFLs and LFLs will be banned.

Maine

Starting in 2026, the state will no longer allow CFLs and Linear Fluorescent Bulbs.

Maryland

While a bill hasn’t been passed, bill HB0747 is under consideration that would ban LFBs with a CRI greater than 87 starting in Oct. 2024 and ban CFLs with screw/bayonet-base starting Jan. 2025, and all other CFLs and LFLs starting in July 2026.

Massachusetts

The state doesn’t have any state specific bans, but heavily incentivizes the switch to more efficient bulbs.

Nevada

In 2023, the state banned the sale of bulbs with a CRI over 87. There is some legislation that could come through that would ban CFLs and LFLs.

New Jersey

In 2023, the state banned the sale of bulbs with a CRI over 87.

Oregon

In 2024, the state banned screw/bayonet CFLs. In 2025, a ban for pin-base CFLs and LFLs will be enacted. Only a ban on the sale.

Rhode Island

In 2024, the state banned screw/bayonet CFLs. In 2025, a ban for pin-base CFLs and LFLs will be enacted. Only a ban on the sale.

Vermont

In 2023, the sale of screw based CFLs was banned, in 2024, the sale of all 4 ft LFLs was banned.

Washington

Starting in 2029 the sale of LFLs and CFLs will be banned. Retailers are allowed to sell existing stock till then.

Washington D.C.

The state does not have any official bans, but they do have strict disposal regulations. These regulations incentivize the transition to a cleaner bulb.

Federal Regulation

The federal government banned the sale of incandescent bulbs in 2014, as well, has been tightening the energy efficiency standards of appliances and lighting products. This pushes for companies to produce more efficient bulbs and phase out the less efficient ones.

SUSTAINABILITY

ELECTRIC VEHICLES

HOW EVS ARE REVOLUTIONIZING TRANSPORTATION

In recent years, electric vehicles (EVs) have become increasingly popular across the United States. As individuals, businesses, and government entities continue to consider how they can integrate sustainability principles into everyday life, EVs represent an ever more attractive solution for those looking to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, increase energy efficiency, and lower operating costs.

TRANSPORTATION & CARBON EMISSIONS

Per EPA around 28% of U.S. GHG emissions come from transportation – burning fossil fuels for cars, trucks, ships, trains, and planes. Currently 94% of the fuel used for transportation is petroleum-based (primarily gasoline and diesel), which, when burned, leads directly to GHG emissions. With nearly 285 million commercial and personal vehicles on the road, a significant amount of emissions are coming from the cars and trucks we use each day to get around. Yet, estimates show that only around 2 million electric vehicles are currently in use, making the potential impact of widespread EV adoption in the United States dramatic.

WHAT ARE EVs AND HOW DO THEY WORK?

There are two primary types of electric vehicles:

• Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs): Vehicles that run solely on electric power stored in batteries and have no internal combustion engine.

• Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs): Vehicles that have both electric motors powered by batteries and an internal combustion engine, offering flexibility in longer trips where electric power alone may not suffice.

In many ways, EVs operate similarly to traditional internal combustion engines vehicles (ICEVs), but there are significant differences. There is a battery – typically lithiumion – that stores the electrical energy that powers the electric motor and propels the vehicle. Also, many EVs use regenerative braking technology, where the electric motor acts as a generator to convert some of the vehicle’s kinetic energy back into electricity. This energy is then stored in the battery, helping to extend driving range and improve efficiency.

Yet, one of the most discussed topics related to EVs is how, where, and when the batteries are charged. Vehicles can be charged by a standard wall outlet, but users generally prefer using a charging station to reduce the time required to charge. The below table outlines the different levels of charging stations:

Charging unit installed at home or in public locations (workplace, shopping centers, parking lots)

Found along highways/ major routes and in urban areas; primarily used for long-distance travel and quick top-ups

BACK TO SCHOOL MONTH

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY TIPS

For the 13.3 million transportation workers and other motorists across the United States, the start of a new school year brings a need for extra caution. Drivers need to pay special attention to the millions of children and teens crossing the streets, waiting at bus stops, and entering and exiting buses. Each year in Texas, hundreds of vehicle crashes occur in school zones resulting in severe injuries and death. Accidents like these are preventable when drivers follow school bus and school zone laws and use these safe driving tips:

1. NEVER PASS A SCHOOL BUS WHEN RED LIGHTS ARE FLASHING

Red flashing lights and an extended stop sign mean a school bus is stopped to let students on or off. Drivers behind or in front of a school bus must stop even if the road is divided (unless there is a physical barrier separating the lanes). Passing a school bus with red flashing lights in Texas is illegal. Violators can receive up to a $1,250 fine, driver’s license suspension, and jail time.

2. SLOW DOWN AND STAY ALERT

Obey speed limit signs. Look for students walking in the street or riding bicycles, especially in neighborhoods without sidewalks. Students on bikes are often inexperienced. Give them plenty of room.

3. REVERSE WITH CARE

Back up slowly and look for pedestrians in driveways, sidewalks, and around vehicles. Use all mirrors and a backup camera if the vehicle has one.

4. LOOK FOR CROSSWALKS AND PREPARE TO STOP

According to the American Automobile Association, more than one-third of drivers roll through stop signs in school zones or neighborhoods. Be alert at intersections and crosswalks. Students often dart into crosswalks, streets, and between vehicles, especially when trying to catch a bus. Always come to a complete stop.

5. AVOID DISTRACTIONS

Using handheld devices while driving in Texas is illegal and can result in a $200 fine. Research shows that when drivers take their eyes off the road for only two seconds, it doubles their chances of crashing.
