News from your excellent-rated school district!

After spending the school year learning about life on the Ohio Frontier (the history of settlement, the trials and tribulations of native peoples and settlers, native plant and animal species, and the impact of settlement on Ohio’s environment), students in the American Experience Academy class took part in a nearly two week event known as “Frontier Days” in May. Throughout the “living history” event, students assumed the persona of either a settler or native, and wore a full set of hand-sewn eighteenth century historical impressions that they had spent the year creating. Some students portrayed the rugged “woodsy” type settlers while others were among the first upper class gentlemen and ladies who came to the new territory. A third group represented the natives who populated Ohio prior to settlement. After setting up a small village consisting of authentic period tents (in partnership with a Northeast Ohio historical re-enactment group called the Ramrod Busters), students gained insight into the difficulties of everyday life in the late 1700’s. They began each morning by starting a campfire to

cook breakfast using cast iron cookware. Throughout each day they practiced such skills as meal prep and cooking using dutch ovens, bullet and cartridge making, surveying, forging steel, writing with a quill and ink, manners, settler-native relations/ customs, throwing a hawke and axe, shooting a bow and arrow, and so much more. The first week culminated with a tactical simulation of a quarrel between natives and settlers that resulted in a battle. Then, students participated in a “mixer” dance where they learned various line dances that were popular during this era as it was a way for people to “mix” with neighbors. Academy students also engaged in various games that were played at this time. During the second week, our students remained in character and became “teachers” to share some of their newlygained knowledge with area elementary schools. Students from Rootstown, James A. Garfield and Crestwood visited CHS to learn about life in Ohio during the late eighteenth century. A mer ican Exper ience Aca de my st ude nt s a lso participated in the Brimfield Historical Society’s “Night at the Museum” for which the program earned a donation to help with future field trips and expenses.
