HEADWATERS:

New Plays of the West

CREEDE REPERTORY THEATRE

A third of the shows CRT has produced over the last fifteen years have been World Premieres! Why are new plays so important to CRT? Because new plays are the lifeblood of theater. They are the future, tomorrow’s classics.

s r e t a w head new play festival

Now in its 6th season, the Headwaters New Play Festival is a weeklong workshop where two selected plays are developed with a team of professional theatre artists and receive public readings. Headwaters is the source of new plays of the West. We look for plays set in the current, historic, or mystic western United States; plays that deal with themes connected to the West; and plays that re-imagine what “West” means. Festival audiences get a front row seat into the adventurous process of bringing a play to life: untested material, instant feedback, engaging talk-backs, and the opening performance of CRT’s bilingual Young Audience Outreach Tour that will travel around the southwest serving over 24,000 students! CRT’s 52nd season features the Headwaters World Premiere General Store by Brian Watkins, a New Dramatist Resident Playwright.

10-Minute Play Festival & 24-Hour Play Challenge

September 5 / 7 pm / The Ruth Pay What You Can The company-generated 10-Minute Play Festival is one of the most exciting nights of the season. Five original plays inspired by a common theme starring our talented company like you’ve never seen them before. The second act will feature two short plays created in 24 hours. Yes, you read that correctly. Teams are assigned a random play title and are given 24 hours to write, stage, rehearse, memorize, and design their magnum opus. Our prayers are with them.
