Step by Step Instructions

A Halloween Ghost Shopping List

1 pair of 4mm knitting needles White DK wool Oddments of black DK wool Small amount of toy stuffing In this issue Elaine from Knit Wits is going to knit this cute little ghost. This is a very simple easy to follow pattern with lots of step by step photos. Ghost will stand approx 3in tall when complete You will need a basic knowledge of cast on, knit, purl & increasing in a stitch & knitting stitches together and stocking stitch (1 row knit, 1 row purl)

The abbreviations we will use are K2tog â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Knit 2 stitches together KFB â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Knit into front & back of stitch

A Halloween Ghost Body of Ghost Cast on 7 stitches Row 1. KFB in each stitch (14 sts) Row 2. Purl Row 3. KFB in each stitch (28sts) Row 4. Purl Row 5. - 21. Stocking stitch Row 22. Purl Row 23. K1 (K2tog, K1) to end (19sts) Row 24. Purl Row 25. K1 (K2tog) to end (10sts) Cut a long tail (you will use this to sew up ghost) Thread onto a needle & run through remaining 10sts and pull tight to gather. Stitch up seam, leaving a small gap at top to stuff. Once stuffed run yarn round remaining stitches & gather tightly. Now, thread needle right through work, from top to bottom & back again. Pull this slightly and fasten off. This will give you a flatter surface enabling your ghost to stand.

A Halloween Ghost Arms â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Make 2 of these Cast on 6sts & work 6 rows in stocking stitch Break off yarn leaving a long tail, thread through 6sts, fasten off. Fold arm in half lengthways and seam. Attach to body.

Face With a length of black yarn, stitch on facial details as desired, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be afraid to experiment, make face as funny or scary as you like.

And there you have it, 1 knitted ghost. You can make these various sizes by adding more or less rows to the body, or by using more or less stuffing. I hope you enjoy making him.

Feast Ideas! All Hallows’ eve will soon be upon us and what a feast you can prepare for your ghoulish guests to enjoy! Here are a few simple ideas to make your gathering

spook-tacular! Ordinary cupcakes can be turned into eyeballs by being iced with white icing, a circle of green, brown or blue fondant icing being placed in the centre for the ‘iris’ with a black sweet or dot of icing added to the centre of the ‘iris’ for the pupil.

Slop a pile of butterscotch angel delight into a shallow bowl then splatter with strawberry and chocolate angel delight to make a disgusting looking but tasty pile of plasma!!

Halloween Special! with Madam Salami

Delicious Pizza skulls and cross bones! There are many ways to make pizza dough, I myself use live yeast and let my bread maker do the kneading. If you don’t have a bread maker it is easily done by hand with this very basic dough recipe. If you prefer to use a supermarket bought packet mix that works just as well, or for an even easier Halloween pizza you can buy ready made pizza bases, cut out shapes with Halloween cookie cutters and top as normal. Basic Pizza Dough Mix: 60z or 175g of strong white flour 1 tsp salt Easy blend dried yeast – used as according to packet instructions ½ tsp caster sugar 1 tbsp olive oil Toppings of your choice; some good examples are red and green pepper, sweetcorn, mushrooms, hotdog sausages, onions, pepperoni, and green or black olives. Method: Mix up your dough, according to pack or recipe instructions and leave to rise as instructed, then on a floured surface roll out. Hand cut, shape or cookie cutter the shapes you wish your pizzas to be. We usually make ours into skulls and cross bones, then decorate accordingly with your chosen toppings. Bake in the oven, they will take next to no time to cook, serve with a green salad. They look and taste great and will go down really well with adults and children alike!

Severed Jelly hand You will need: 1 packet of jelly -‐ vegetarian or regular. Any flavour or colour will do! Red and black food colouring – natural colourings are available. 1 rubber glove – well washed. Boiling water Rubber bands, clothes pegs or tape Clean paint brush Measuring jug

This is a great recipe for any Halloween table! As all the ingredients are edible the hand can be eaten, however, the use of neat food colouring can give it an unpleasant taste. First wash the outside of your rubber glove in warm soapy water, rinse and turn inside o Very carefully pour the jelly into the inside out glove, fill half way. Tie off the top of the glove with tape, rubber bands or clothes pegs (or all 3 if you like!) to ensure no jelly leaks out.

Arrange the glove on a plate, use some screwed up newspaper to raise the palm of the ‘hand’ a little, this makes sure that the fingers don’t get too squashed. Allow the jelly to cool in the glove.

Once the jelly has cooled, put the ‘hand’ into the freezer while still on the plate. It will take a good few hours to freeze all the way through, so it is advisable to make it the day before it is needed. Once it is ready, remove from the freezer and carefully cut away the rubber glove. It doesn’t matter if some of the fingers become detached it just adds to the goriness! When it is completely out of the glove, paint the end ‘stump’ with some red food colouring to look like blood and dab on some black too. You can even paint the finger nails black and add some red strawberry laces at the ‘stump’ end to look like veins and muscle tissue.

Now serve and enjoy! As the jelly begins to defrost, it melts and the plate becomes redder as if your hand is sitting in a pool of blood!

Note: Don’t like Jelly? You can also make this hand using blancmange mix or angel delight; just follow the instructions for the jelly hand.

Guide to starting knitting! part 1

In order to start knitting all you need is a

pair of needles and some yarn. The finest and the fattest needles are the hardest to handle for beginners, so a lot of people choose something in between. Many sources recommend DK (Double Knitting) yarn and size 4mm needles, but don't let this stop you trying all sorts of different ones. When you purchase the yarn look at the ball band where you should find a needle size suggestion. Most beginners start with a scarf where you can cast on a number of stitches and buy some fluffly wool with big needles and you will be surprised how quickly a scarf can grow!

Round Nose pliers Make sure the tool handles are long enough to go across your entire palm, if the tools stop in the middle of your palm it will press down on the metacarpals in your hand and can cause bad Repetitive Strain Injury. Flat Nose Pliers Theses are used for holding jewellery when you are working on it, squashing crimps if you don't have the crimp tool, creating folds in wires, they also help in opening and shutting jump rings. You can buy these from any decent DIY store but they will probably have ridges on the blades for easier use in DIY. These ones will mark your wire so you really need proper jewelers ones.

These are also used for opening and closing jump rings, they are also really good for tiny work, such as crushing a crimp inside a calotte to get a nice neat finish.

Nylon Jaw Pliers These have a nylon block on them and are used for straightening wire.! when you run wire through them the nylon causes friction which warms the wire up and makes it more pliable, fantastic for straightening out kicks and bends.
